Who has the top rivalry in Black College football?

Looking back on the Classic games that have been played this year (and the ones yet to be played), I wanted to throw this question out to everyone – who has the top rivalry in Black College football?

And this doesn’t have to be limited to Classic games. In fact, some of the longest-running rivalries in Black College football have been in place long before Classic games became the norm.

Rivalries tend to bring out the passion in a football fan. If your team wins against its biggest rival, you get to talk smack for at least a year (and who doesn’t enjoy talking a little smack every now and then?)

Rivalries also tend to bring out the fans — thousands and thousands of fans. It’s likely that the two biggest crowds during the football season will be at homecoming and against the biggest rival.

So, who do you think has the top rivalry in Black College football? Most will say it’s their school against their hated rival, but is there one rivalry that most fans will agree stands above the rest? And why?

Let the discussion begin ……

Clark Atlanta vs Morehouse. The game has history dating back to the early 1900’s and the tradition is still going. I look foward to us beating Morehouse this year.

I would say Tuskegee vs. Morehouse
or I could say Tuskegee vs. Alabama State

…but since Tuskegee routinely whups these inferior squads, how can we call it a rivalry? LOL

Most definitely will be the Magic City Classic (Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M)….or the Turkey Day Classic (Alabama State vs. Tuskegee)…since tuskegee just start getting better…it’s actually a rivalry now….

I went to the first Southern vs Grambling game in the Super Dome as a family (about 13 packed into a chevy station wagon (remember the one with the wood paneling on the side) holiday event when I was a kid. And, just before Katrina, we went back again as a family (this time 50+ in separate vehilces (each child and adult really had their own seatbelt this time.)

But, while the Bayou Classic has the numbers…there’s still nothing like the original MS homestate classic…JSU vs. Alcorn State…

You must decide when discussing HBCU whether you are simply talking football or the whole experience because the battle of the bands is sometimes a bigger deal than the game and THAT is what draws the fans. The band thing is what makes HBCU unique versus major college football where it is simply about football.

Albany State vs Ft. Valley State, this has been a hated rivalry for many many years and the game has always been off the da hook!!! During the beginning, Ft. Valley dominated but in the last 20 plus years or so, Albany State has dominated… Go Rams! If this game could be advertised and get some celeberty backing and moved to Atlanta, I guarantee it will be as big as the Bayou Classic.

Easily it is the N.C. Central University vs. N.C. A&T.
Interest is so high and the passions are at such a level that until this year, the two schools couldn’t even play on each other’s campus. Plus, aside from this year’s upset, we own A&T. LOL

The top one has to be the Bayou Classic (Grambling vs. Southern). Locally, Ft Valley vs Albany State is good (maybe the GA Dome should have them play here since GA Tech and UGA want to act all sissified), NC A & T and NC Central (Aggie-Eagle Classic) is another one.

Without a doubt NCCU vs nca&t (small case intended). This rivalry goes way beyond football. A brawl during a basketball game @ 1988-89 prevented us from holding any athletic event on one another’s campus. The school’s are located less than an hour’s drive from each other along I-85. We compete for students, prestige in the state of North Carolina, even who has the finest women. Every student from North Carolina who attends one of these schools has a close friend who attends the other. There’s no comparison!

Morehouse vs. CAU because they are right next to each other literally. Where Morehouse ends CAU begins. The closest College football rivalry in the entire country. The two schools share the same library, players from each team pass by each other everyday on the promenade and because of cross campus registration players from Morehouse and CAU occasionally take classes together. They are really on the same campus. That’s like if Southern and Grambling were next to each other and had to see each other EVERYDAY. This is by far the most intense HBCU Rivalry. Morehouse vs. Tuskegee is a great rivalry too. I played for Morehouse and I’ve been to many classic games but none of them match the intensity of the Morehouse vs. CAU game. Go Morehouse!!!

Morehouse vs. CAU by far is the most intense HBCU rivalry. The two schools border each other. Where Morehouse ends CAU begins. The players from both teams share the same library and constantly see each other there and on the promenade. Also because of AUC cross registration they even occasionally take classes together. It’s what would happen if they were to put Georgia and Georgia Tech right next to each other! By far the closest and most intense rivalry in HBCU as well as college football in the entire country. Morehouse vs. Tuskegee in Columbus is also a great rivalry too. As a former Morehouse Maroon Tiger Football player who played in this rivalry as well as an avid HBCU football fan and Classic game attendee no rivalry can match Morehouse vs. CAU. Go House!!!

Cross ties, with spouses, children, sibligns, coworkers, frat brothers and sorors. This thing runs deep. It is an intense rivalry as it is a family affair. As a graduate of Fort Valley, along with my mom and her sister, my grandmother and three cousins, The Fountain City Classic is a great rivalry. Not only that but my mom has hired both, Ft. Valley and Albany St. graduates at her place of employment, and the tension between the employees is intensed. I have been to the FAMU/TSU game, FAMU/BCC game, and Bayou Classic, but nothing compares to the FCC, because it’s not about notariety, only the two teams, that are the same color, and are located 45 mins apart. Doesn’t get any closer or better. All roads leads to Columbus, Ga.

The other rivalries are also great but from the days when Coach Robinson ruled college ball the the accomplishments of Coach Richardson at SU. the games have been legendary. We have lost to great Grambling teams and beat great teams when we had down years. That is what rivalry is all about … throw out the record … they coming at us and we coming to get them. then after the weekend … the Smack for the rest of the year.

I just laugh at them because they are no way near to being the real HU with their dress code policy. It will ALWAYS be Howard !!!!! — Pretty much we’re the Alpha of most things! They finally got the University behind their names and think when people say HU, they are thinking of Hampton — sorry, but they are thinking of Howard. Unfortunately, people still refer to them as a ONE name school, Hampton and not Hampton University. They have issues!!!!
