Who has the top rivalry in Black College football?

Looking back on the Classic games that have been played this year (and the ones yet to be played), I wanted to throw this question out to everyone – who has the top rivalry in Black College football?

And this doesn’t have to be limited to Classic games. In fact, some of the longest-running rivalries in Black College football have been in place long before Classic games became the norm.

Rivalries tend to bring out the passion in a football fan. If your team wins against its biggest rival, you get to talk smack for at least a year (and who doesn’t enjoy talking a little smack every now and then?)

Rivalries also tend to bring out the fans — thousands and thousands of fans. It’s likely that the two biggest crowds during the football season will be at homecoming and against the biggest rival.

So, who do you think has the top rivalry in Black College football? Most will say it’s their school against their hated rival, but is there one rivalry that most fans will agree stands above the rest? And why?

Let the discussion begin ……

FAMU vs. BC-WHO. I’ve been going to the game all my life and it keeps getting better. Fantastic now that it’s in Orlando. I have to admit that I enjoyed Grambling vs. Southern, too, especially with the late coach Eddie Robinson the sideline.

SC STATE VS FAMU IS A VERY BIG RIVALRY GAME AS WELL AS SCSU VS NC A&T. BOTH OF THOSE GAMES ARE VERY BIG IN THE MEAC CONFERENCE. THE SCSU VS FAMU HALFTIME SHOW WITH THE FAMU MARCHING 100 VS THE SCSU MARCHING ”101 IS WELL WORTH THE PRICE ALONE. BEING A MORRIS BROWN WOLVERINE, THE GAME AGAINST OUR BIGGEST RIVAL CLARK COLLEGE WAS A HUGE GAME AND A HEATED RIVALRY. WITHOUT QUESTION HBCU’S HAVE SOME OF THE MOST HOTLY CONTESTED RIVALRIES IN ALL OF SPORTS. GET UP FOR THE BULLDOGS.

While in high school, TSU vs. FAMU. After attending “A” Albany State vs. Ft. Valley State “Fountain City Classic” football game. Imagine playing a school with the same team colors…the football gods knew what they were doing.

It’s got to be Southern vs. Grambling. NO BLACK SCHOOL has the name recognition of Grambling (except Howard). And what other game gets a national television broadcast each year?

I have witness many NCCU vs. NC A&T rumbles. The trainers were betting on how many times the meat wagon (EMT) had to come on the field to get a player. That is WAR!

Morehouse vs. CAU because they are right next to each other literally. Where Morehouse ends CAU begins. The closest College football rivalry in the entire country. The two schools share the same library, players from each team pass by each other everyday on the promenade and because of cross campus registration players from Morehouse and CAU occasionally take classes together. They are really on the same campus. That’s like if Southern and Grambling were next to each other and had to see each other EVERYDAY. This is by far the most intense HBCU Rivalry. Morehouse vs. Tuskegee is a great rivalry too. I played for Morehouse and I’ve been to many classic games but none of them match the intensity of the Morehouse vs. CAU game. Go Morehouse!!!

Morehouse vs. CAU by far is the most intense HBCU rivalry. The two schools border each other. Where Morehouse ends CAU begins. The players from both teams share the same library and constantly see each other there and on the promenade. Also because of AUC cross registration they even occasionally take classes together. It’s what would happen if they were to put Georgia and Georgia Tech right next to each other! By far the closest and most intense rivalry in HBCU as well as college football in the entire country. Morehouse vs. Tuskegee in Columbus is also a great rivalry too. As a former Morehouse Maroon Tiger Football player who played in this rivalry as well as an avid HBCU football fan and Classic game attendee no rivalry can match Morehouse vs. CAU. Go House!!!

The estimated crowd at last years Magic City Classic (game and tailgating) was over 100K. The Hornets had a terrible team and the Bulldogs were not much better. Think of what that number would be in a city the size of Atlanta or New Orleans.

ASU and FVSU….it aint a bout the tv exposure, or the big time name recognition. This is simply about the two schools. This is a REAL rivalry, both blue and gold, recruit from the same area. Cross ties, with spouses, children, sibligns, coworkers, frat brothers and sorors. This thing runs deep. It is an intense rivalry as it is a family affair. We when talk it is simply see you at the Classic, nothing more need to be said.

The Fort Valley State University vs. Albany State University at the Fountain City Classic! Hands down, The rivarly is SO intense and it spills over into all sports. We could even play pencil pop and we still play hard. As a FVSU alum, WE SIMPLY CAN NOT STAND ALBANY STATE! That being said after the game we party together but as far as the game, CANT STAND THEM BILLY GOATS! This game is the Blue and Gold Superbowl!

As a graduate of Fort Valley, along with my mom and her sister, my grandmother and three cousins, The Fountain City Classic is a great rivalry. Not only that but my mom has hired both, Ft. Valley and Albany St. graduates at her place of employment, and the tension between the employees is intensed. I have been to the FAMU/TSU game, FAMU/BCC game, and Bayou Classic, but nothing compares to the FCC, because it’s not about notariety, only the two teams, that are the same color, and are located 45 mins apart. Doesn’t get any closer or better. All roads leads to Columbus, Ga.

Thanksgiving, New Orleans. Super Dome. 73,000 in the Dome, 135,000 can not get in so they watch on national TV. The Step show, Battle of the Bands. Family and friends. Y’all tell me.

The other rivalries are also great but from the days when Coach Robinson ruled college ball the the accomplishments of Coach Richardson at SU. the games have been legendary. We have lost to great Grambling teams and beat great teams when we had down years. That is what rivalry is all about … throw out the record … they coming at us and we coming to get them. then after the weekend … the Smack for the rest of the year.

It’s got to be the FCC. Ain’t nothing like it. The hate runs deep between these two schools. Albany St vs Fort Valley. I was apart of this classic from 97-00. Man, just to see the sidelines, rain, hail, sleet or snow it’s going to be packed. Let’s go Albany St, The Real Blue & Gold. CO ‘01

The Florida Classic; FAMU-VS-BCC is by far the best classic in HBCU football. This classic has it all. Two of the best bands in ALL of college football. 70,000 excited fans. Tailgates that are out of this world. A-list talent. A whole week of events. The Bayou Classic doesn’t compare!!!

I laugh at all these so called rivalries…….yall have no idea what a rivalry is until you come down 85 to Columbus the 1st Saturday of every November and watch the wild kittens of FVSU get mollywhooped by the MIGHTY GOLDEN RAMS of “THE” ALBANY STATE UNIVERSITY. Its so much hatred between these schools. FVSU wants to be ASU so bad, they built a stadium like us, they built dorms like us, they even went as far as hired our coach to be like “WINNERS” and yet they still cant come close to ASU……the SIAC is our conference and we will reign supreme !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t why Hampton thinks they are the real HU when history speaks that they were INITIALLY called INSTITUTE until some years ago. Obviously, they have don’t know their own history. I just laugh at them because they are no way near to being the real HU with their dress code policy. It will ALWAYS be Howard !!!!! — Pretty much we’re the Alpha of most things! They finally got the University behind their names and think when people say HU, they are thinking of Hampton — sorry, but they are thinking of Howard. Unfortunately, people still refer to them as a ONE name school, Hampton and not Hampton University. They have issues!!!! LOL LOL They get no respect for HBCU’s located in an unwelcoming dull of a city. LOL LOL !!!!

“”"GOSH”"”"Where are you people getting all of these comments. How can you think about putting any other rivery above the Grambling vs. Southern rivery in the Bayou Classic? Im not saying that the other schools don’t have riveries. But stop answering questions with your heart, and start answering with your brain. I didn’t go to either one of the universities, but all of us black people know that the Bayou Classic is the biggest black college rivery of the year.

ESPN should televise the ASU vs FVSU game. This is the rivalry of all rivalries!!! Its the type of atmosphere most people crave in HBCU football. I just wish the HBCUs would receive the same treatment as other entities. However I’m very grateful that AJC is including the HBCUs in your reporting.
