Who has the best band among HBCU schools?

Editor’s Note: Due to such great response to this blog, another forum has been set up. You can join the conversation by clicking here.

This is a question that I hear all the time, and it picked up more steam after last Saturday – Who has the best band among HBCU schools?

After watching FAMU and Tennessee State in the Atlanta Football Classic over the weekend, I would be hard-pressed to pick one or the other. And if you think I’m taking the easy way out by not picking someone, well ….. you are right. I’m not falling into the trap! (Although I must admit that FAM’s melody of Michael Jackson’s songs was pretty smooth).

Who has the best HBCU band?

That’s why the Battle of the Bands is so popular. HBCU bands from all over meet up (usually in the ATL) and put it all out there for everyone to see. So, let me throw some names out there and you let me know who has the best band – and why.

This isn’t a ranking, just a list. (And you should scroll all the way to the end of the conversation to check out the most recent entry.  Folks are weighing in with some interesting choices — and that’s a good thing!)

And if you think my list is ‘out of tune’, put up your own list and feel free to rank them. It wouldn’t be the first time – or the last – that I’ve been proven wrong.

Here’s a look back at photos from last Saturday’s Classic and last Friday’s Allstate HBCU Step Showdown.

WHO’S NUMBER ONE – AND WHY?

Alabama A&M Marching Maroon and White

Bethune-Cookman University Marching Wildcats

Clark Atlanta University Marching Panthers

Florida A&M Marching 100

Grambling State Tiger Marching Band

Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South

Langston University Marching Pride band

Morehouse College House of Funk

N.C. Central University Marching Sound Machine

Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm

Savannah State Coastal Empire Sound Explosion

Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band

Tennessee State Aristocrat of Bands

This should be interesting.

1. FLORIDA A&M MARCHING 100 – There is not other band that toaches then….
2. Bethune Cookman is good
3. Southern – Juke
4. Jackson State – Sonic Boom
5. South Carolina State University – Marching 101 even though they are not very original.

The others are just mediocre…

OMG. This list is far from accurate…While I agree, Southern, BCC, FAMU, AA&M, Jackson State and Gramblin belong – where in the HEEZE did these AUC schools come from? I mean for REALS?!?! Where is JCSU, Hampton, SC State and NC A&T? Wow. I cannot wait for the Battle to Begin!

I’m an alumna of an HBCU that didn’t make the list so I’m unbiased. But during my glory days, no one topped FAM, Norfolk State and Texas Southern. I will never forget when they came to Cali for the Gold Coast Classic, it was my first exposure to HBCUs and I’ve been hooked ever since. Can’t wait for the Battle in Jan!

MOJO43

FAMU has the rep, but I give BCC the edge. FAMU will slack on some shows, have yet to see BCC slack anywhere at any time. Plus they do different things and moves throughout their shows…its easy to get bored with entrance, school song, dancing girls, dance routine, finish everytime. I like how BCC changes it up and “lets go wildcats” is probably the most often borrowed collegiate piece out there……….and I love to hear it played well live. By the way I went to Howard lol…so no alma mater bias there.

The Legion (NSU) is tight but I cant put them over many SWAC bands, certainly not Southern and JSU.

Ive been more and more impressed with Texas Southern….the Ocean definitely deserves to be in the discussion.

Alabama State University has one of the best if not the best college band. Southern University is up there too. FAMU is by far the most overrated band. I’m not sure why FAMU gets so much praise other than being big. There sound doesn’t even match their numbers.

I would have to say FAMU. I ran track for FAMU(sprinter) and I must admit the Marching 100 practiced harder than us. I haven’t seen another band that comes close to comparing w/ them. They have sound that will blow you away and if you were @ Saturday’s game, they added FAMU’s gospel choir to sing “Heal the World” and it was great. For those of you that are choosing Atlanta A&T, let me be the 1st to tell you, I was @ FAMU when those guys(Atlanta A&T) were there, so go ahead and choose FAMU. Atlanta A&T were most of FAMU’s Marching 100 members from the ATL area.

My vote will have to go with Southern. FAMU fans are driven on numbers. They have interesting shows and I love there ballads. In contrast, Southern have the total package without having to have 1,000 members. They march with precision, have nice ballads, and most of all… they can blow. Dr. Greggs all day.

FAMU’s MARCHING 100 is the unbreakable MOLD and the rest of you aren’t even CLAY!!! The record speaks for itself but don’t believe me, see for yourself..

1992 – Sports Illustrated Magazine listed The Marching Band as “The Best College Marching Band in the Country.”
1994 – ESPN2 produced a thirty minute documentary on the Marching Band that aired in 1995
October 2003 – ESPN’s Kieran Darcy states, “The Marching 100 is the Best Band in the Land.”
2005 – The Marching Band performed at Super Bowl XXXIX.
February 4, 2006 – The Marching Band Performed at Super Bowl XLI with recording artist “Prince” in Miami.
2006 – 20 Members of the Marching Band performed at the Grammy Awards with Kanye West and Jamie Foxx in Los Angeles. The show was broadcasted nationally on CBS TV.
2006 – The Atlanta Constitution named The Marching Band “The Best Band.”
2006 – Members of The Marching Band performed at The American Music Awards.
October 15, 2008 – CNN television states, “The FAMU Band is the Best Band in the Entire Universe.”
2008 – The Marching Band was featured in the NY Times for its band camps.
2008 – The Marching Band was featured on ESPN’s College Game Day on the campus of FAMU.
2008 – The Marching Band was featured on CBS News with Katie Couric.
January 20, 2009 – The Marching Band represented the State of Florida in the Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama.
January, 2009 – The Marching Band makes another appearance at Honda’s Battle of the Bands in Atlanta, GA.

Reason #1 FAMU is NOT the best…they have that many members and do not blow any louder than bands with 3/4 of their number. Reason #2…went to the classic on Saturday and one of the snare drummers didn’t even know the cadences being played at halftime so he wasn’t even beating his drum (yes I was that close to the field). Reason #3 Their drumline is not innovative enough…been that way for years
We all know that being invited to play at certain events has more to do with Alumni and connections than how good a band is (see South Cobb High School here in GA that played at Obama’s inauguration)

It is really impossible to say there is one band that is truly the best but in terms of the top ones, here is my list:

NC A&T (nobody is touching the Blue Steel drumline) Blue & Gold Marching Machine
S.C. State
FAMU
Southern Univ
Bethune Cookman

It’s nice for everyone to have pride in their school’s bans. And rightly so they should. BUT when America needs a band to represent America, how many other school bands were called to FRANCE, Japan, England to their nations celebrations. Was it Grambling? Was it Jackson St., was it BCC, Alcorn, Southern, Howard, Clark, Morris Brown, or any of the other schools? NO! It was the one and only Florida Agricultural ad Mechanical University (FAMU). The documentaries, 60 Minutes, 20/20, ESPN, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and the list goes on to have peeked interest in the greatest show band ever created. So continue to list your school’s bands, its only right to show favoritism for you college. BUT, when the world calls for a representative, Grammy, Super Bowls, Music Awards, Emmys, Tonys, and such alike. FL A & M Univeristy will always get the first call…Oh yea, for those who’s gonna ask why FAMU was not in the movie Drumm Line; it’s because FAMU turned them down, we don’t play second to any band, not even fake make-believe.

FAMU you performed one of the greatest halftime show of all time at the Alss state Atlanta Classic. I mean, man, they were precision and entertaining in their tribute to Michael Jackson. Their configuring the body of Michael Jackson with his head and “THE GLOVE” was “FANTASTIC!”. I am more than confident they will be ask to perform this show again. Maybe a the SUPER BOWL. They are a great marching band. I give their band director and the “MARCHING RATTLERS” KUDOS. They were the talk of the town in Atlanta and to those across the country who saw their performance.

People people…NC A&T was asked for usage of their name in the film “Drumline” but they declined because they wanted higher compensation than they were being offered. So, the name was changed to Atlanta A&T but of course the uniforms and colors were still modeled after A&T. A&T’s drumline a.k.a. Blue Steel routinely embarrasses other drumlines. This is not to say A&T has the best band overall, but they are indeed near the top
