Vivlamore reporting.
Marvin Williams returns to Atlanta Friday as a member of the Jazz. The Hawks‘ first-round pick, No. 2 overall in 2005, was traded in the offseason after spending his first seven seasons in the organization. Although he won’t play due to inflammation in his right knee, Williams spoke to the AJC about the trade, his time in Atlanta and what kind of reception he might receive.
Q. What are your thoughts about coming back to Atlanta?
A. I’m really, really excited. A lot of those guys I haven’t seen or talked to since last season. Just to get a chance to get back to the city and see a lot of the people in the organization, see a lot of my friends, and I’m excited to get back there.
Q. It’s hard to keep in contact with people as an NBA player. You forge relationships and after such a transition you leave it all behind. Has that been hard?
A. It was difficult for me this summer to hear about the trade. You make friends with guys and you become close to people in the organization, people around the city. It’s like you are here today and gone tomorrow. With trades, I do understand the business. It happens in the NBA. I’ve seen guys come and go as well throughout my time in Atlanta. I know trades do happen and sometimes it ends up like that.
Q. Did the trade catch up by surprise?
A. I can’t necessarily say I was expecting it. I think anytime anybody is traded they are always surprised. It was just one of those things where I was working out and a couple of buddies of mine had told me they heard I got traded. During the summer time there are always rumors going around so I really didn’t pay too much attention. When I got done working out I had a couple voice mails from Rick Sund, my agent. I called Rick Sund back and he expressed to me that I may see it on TV or on Twitter but that I was going to be traded so he wanted to let me know firsthand. I greatly appreciated that. They did everything first class. They were awesome about the whole situation. When I got back to my house, I saw across the bottom of the (TV) screen that I got traded to Utah.
Q. It was Rick Sund who called you? Not Danny Ferry?
A. Actually Danny was on the line as well. I figured Rick reached out to me because he already knew me. I had never met Danny Ferry personally. I didn’t get a chance to speak to him when he got the job.
Q. What are your reflections about your time in Atlanta?
A. I had an absolute blast, man. Looking back on it since I have been gone, I had an absolute blast. The organization, the city, took care of me and watched me grow. You know I was 19 years old when I first got drafted and left when I was 26. I grew into a man before their eyes. As a basketball player, I became a better player each year. My memories of Atlanta I will never forget. I will be forever grateful to that organization for giving me an opportunity to live my dream.
Q. What kind of reaction to you think you might get from the crowd?
A. I don’t know. I guess I haven’t really thought too much about it, to be honest. I’ve always loved Atlanta fans. They’ve always come out and shown their support. They’ve always voiced their opinion. They’ve seen my good days. They’ve seen my bad days. I guess at the end of the day I hope they know that I really did appreciate playing for those guys.
Q. How disappointing is it to return but not get a chance to play?
A. Very, very, very. You get a chance to play against your old team and go back get a chance to play in front of some of the fans that liked you once again. I’ve been going through this knee thing for the last few weeks and it’s been tough. It’s disappointing that I won’t be able to play but at the end of the day I am a member of the Utah Jazz and I have to do what’s best for this organization.
Q. How is life in Utah? How is this new part of your career going?
A. I like it. When I first got traded to Utah my first thought was ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do in Utah.’ I had never spent much time there at all. We would fly in with Atlanta, get in at 1 or 2 in the morning, play the next night and leave. I never spent much time there. The people in Utah, the community, the fans, the people in the organization, everybody has been such a huge help. They’ve made me feel so comfortable since I touched down and I’m really enjoying it out there.

KK is a disciplined defender who lacks the physical skills to defend man to man well.
Usually he gets on the right spots and at least does not misses defensive rotations, etc.
That does not make him a good defender, merely a reliable team defender/player who will not be able to check out premier/top grade offensive talents (PP, Lebron, Granger, …), hence, on a playoff team, it makes him a BENCH player.
Lou is an erratic player and that is on BOTH ends of the floor.
There are games in which is puts better effort on D than others and there are match ups in which he is able to give sufficient/acceptable opposition and others in which he doesn’t.

A few trade ideas
Horford($12M) Morrow ($4M) to PHOX for Gortat($7.2M) Beasley($5.8M) Telfair($1.6M)
Our lineup- Jeff Lou Beasley Josh Gortat
super deep bench-d.harris korver, jj2, zaza, ivan, telfair, stevson
Devin ($8.5M) Petro ($3.5M) & our two 1sts to SAC for Cousins($3.8M) Salmons($8M)
Since SAC will more than likely go to SEA they may be willing to shed a bad contract in salmons and ship out Cousins and look to rebuild fresh in a new city with receiving expiring contracts and having an extra 2 1sts to rebuild a dynasty in the northwest
Lineup-Jeff Korver Josh AL Cousins
Bench Lou, jj2, stevson, salmons, Ivan, Zaza
I also think we take the risk on cousins. he is 22 and the best offensive big in the league and he has played on a team with no help or leaders and has still been awesome(off court/locker room incidents aside). He needs to be on a playoff team and I think his attitude would greatly change. Also he is from Bama and maybe being closer to home would help as well.
Im not over reacting to our recent skid, I have said before the season we will make the playoffs regardless if we stay at 3 or slide to 6. We need a shakeup and I doubt we land any big time FA next summer even with our cap room. GM DF needs to make a move to get a guy soon otherwise I see slim pickins for us this summer. I think we end up like dallas with a lot of new role players and stay mediocre if we dont make a proactive move for a big time guy.

So if there are so many shots to block at the rim, because are guards can’t guard, is not not the responsibility of the bigs to HELP an protect the rim, or was Josh just being the lone ranger and doing that on his own. Hell Zaza even had a block. Al Horford-0 blocks, 1 foul, 0 free throws, but your response is Josh should have been more assertive and attacked the paint. If he did that he would obviously be doing something different than the coach is telling them to do, because not one of our bigs attacked the paint after the first quarter. This team lives and dies by the jumper, we see that every night.

Grandad,
I stated FACTS that show you that all that you said about Teague and Lou on that post was bullsh!t.
Teague has been disappointing but Irving went on a tear ON LOU scoring at least 12 of his 18 third quarter points during the 3 minutes which Teague was not on the floor.
Remember, you stated that Lou was someone who defended better than Teague!!
THESE ARE FACTS
Also, if you have Lou playing PG, 7 or 8 out of 10 games in which that happens you’ll see that the offense is dead.
It’s not Lou’s fault, it’s LD’s.
On the contrary, 7 or 8 times out of 10, Teague will do a DECENT job finding the open man and using his dribble penetration to find the open man.
Lou is not incapable of doing it, simply it’s not his game and when you mess with someone’s game and try to make it different, you better know exactly what you are doing and BE CONSISTENT and not helter skelter about it since that will only give you the worst of that player can give you.
Same sh!t happened with Jamal who LD insisted in playing at the PG slot with ALWAYS the same result against quality teams.

WTF are you talking about? You put a completely disjointed line up on the floor and Josh is the one “missing opportunities to excel and failing to see what??”
The only thing that Josh failed to see during that period was the ball because he never got it. There was NO BALL rotation, no nothing.
It was a STUPID COMPLETELY MAKESHIFT DONE ON THE SPOT LINE UP.
I can bet that Lou, JJ2, KK, Josh and Ivan never, ever shared the court together all at the same time (even on practice) until yesterday.

” How could Josh have a field day inside

The above question was never at the center of my narrative;
nor was the fact that neither was Josh assertive.
`Though both were integral to the central question;
which I believed to be:
Josh had a -10 (+/-) stat in the 3rd Qtr and that stat
can and was deceiving.
I believe the (+/-) stat must be used in conjunction with
surrounding teammates.
I believed that to be your original point.
I was not only supporting that point but further expressing
my belief in the same.
Also, when looking at floor spacing;
in theory KK, JJ, & Lou should give us our best opportunity
to score in the post.
Looking purely from a spacing perspective.
I also made the statement that Lou defends the pg pos
better than he defends the [2] pos.

What happened in those last 3 minutes of the 3rd court HAD NOTHING TO DO with what Josh did or could have done.
NOTHING.
He may do many things wrong but last night he had LITTLE responsibility for what happened.
Did he have a bad stretch where he settled for jumpshots? Sure, but that was a drop of water in the ocean. A DROP.
You can only place blame on JOSH for what happened on the 3rd quarter if you consider that he is at the level of Lebron.

This is the same team without JJ and Marvin, if they were the problem why are we not better. I know many hated JJ on this site, but I will make anyone a bet that over the next 3 years, the hawks will not find a 6′8 guard that can shoot it, defend his spot and play 3 positions without paying the max for. Josh soured Joe with his ability to want to play the point, always arguing calls, killing momentum. The comments of Joe passing it to Josh at the 3 point line is why Josh took so many threes, Joe’s gone, Josh is shooting more 3’s.
People argued Joe was slowing Teague’s growth, he’s worse, Al is still Al, no defense. The Hawks would have contended for a championship if they would have traded Al or Josh, this roster is still unbalanced.

Here I don’t agree. Ball pressure makes a huge difference. Teague was slicing and dicing the Celtics in the first half and then was completely taken out of the game in the 2nd half when Avery Bradley started pressuring him. Irving is a better player, but at the very least, ball pressure would have made it tougher for him to initiate the offense. Teague is easily capable of pressuring, at least every now and then, and the Hawks should probably use him more in that role.

Al and Josh are too limited offensively to be cornerstone players let alone franchise players. This is a perimeter team without cornerstone (Westbrook) or franchise(Durant) perimeter players. They will fight to hold onto the 8th seed. Really think Ferry is positioning for FA’s this summer and a lottery pick. Should start Jenkins at 2 to see what he can do. I have no problem with Teague, he just needs a real 2 and a better offensive scheme. Josh is not a 3 and Al is too limited as a 4. Trade Al straight up for Gortat if Phoenix would do it. Teague, Jenkins, Stephenson, Smith, Gortat. Jenkins and Stephenson can shoot 3’s off Teague’s penetration and let Josh and Marcin do the dirty work. Lou,Zsa Zsa, Ivan, Korver, Morrow, Harris off the bench. Next season, give either Van Gundy a shot. Not a LD fan. Should have kept Woodson and gave him better talent.

Overall, I have not been disappointed in the Hawks play. There are several changes they need to consider, however. Play Ivan more- I don’t understand Drews reluctance to play him? If Teague will not push the ball more consistently, bench him for Harris. Bench Josh every time he shoots beyond 15 feet. Return Lou to the bench- we were winning more with his offense off the bench. Try to aquire a taller guard. We should still make the playoffs, but not sure about advancing..
