Vivlamore reporting.
Hawks general manager Danny Ferry was fined $15,000 by the NBA Monday for ‘inappropriate interaction’ with the game officials following Saturday’s loss to the Celtics.
The league did not reveal the reason for the penalty.
According to a person familiar with the situation, Ferry handed game officials a DVD following the 89-81 loss at Philips Arena.
As reported on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s web site following the game, Celtics guard Rajon Rondo made contact with game official Rodney Mott after being called for a charge with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter. Video of the incident was also detailed on NBA TV. Rondo lowered his shoulder while driving to the basket and collided with Hawks forward Josh Smith.
Rondo was not ejected for making contact with Mott. However, the league suspended Rondo for one game Monday for the incident and for a failure to cooperate with the league investigation. He will not play in Monday’s game against the Knicks.
It’s not the first time Rondo has made contact with an official in Atlanta. He was suspended for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals last season between the Hawks and Celtics. Rondo chest bumped referee Marc Davis with 41 seconds remaining in a Game 1 loss, earning a second technical foul and an ejection.

OB, yeah. Who wants the pressure of winning titles when you can bask in the adoration of hometown fans? The honeymoon with the Lakers new roster ended in what, 5 games? Then they fired Brown. In Atlanta, the on-court results would be secondary to being at the EVENT for at least a good 60 home games. Then, someone might notice the on-court results.

While I FULLY support Ferry’s efforts to share the film evidence with the officials, this will no doubt add some fuel to the next Celtics- Hawks game. It isn’t as if Ferry was protecting his players, he was essentially trying to get their player in trouble… and it worked! Surely, Doc Rivers will look to exploit that during the next game with the Hawks. LD needs to plan to start Ivan and keep him on the floor for 58 minutes (instead of going to the lockerroom for halftime, Ivan will stay on the court and just dare a Celtic to even look his way).

You seem to always focus on (Kirk) Hinrich’s and (Kyle) Korver’s defensive fundamentals (e.g., positioning, stance, etc). Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford have “natural” athleticism that you can’t coach or teach. Where was Korver’s (defensive) positioning on Paul Pierce in the 3rd quarter of Friday night’s game when Pierce “went off” for 17 (3rd quarter) points? You do realize that Korver fouled out (essentially) guarding Pierce – right? I hope you also realize that to a “certain extent” athleticism “trumps” fundamentals (in the NBA). Because of their athleticism, Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith can perform/exhibit “certain” (offensive and defensive) maneuvers, feats, movements and/or plays that you just can’t “coach.”
“We (bloggers)” know (and understand) why you seem to always “point out” (or highlight) Korver’s and Hinrich’s (perceived) “fundamental astuteness” and “high BBIQ.”
BTW, where was Hinrich’s (defensive) positioning in the (video) clip/link provided below?

I wouldn’t count on Ferry using that last roster spot until after the trade deadline. Mr. Ferry,
I personally would like to thank you for stepping up and calling out the officials for this team. If you think that game was bad, you should go back and look at the playoff series last year. While our team does not play smart basketball in crucial situations, we come out of the wrong side of calls by refs too frequently. It would also help if you informed your coach to stand up for his players sometimes. While I understand the “It was not the refs who cost us the game” statements after every bad call, someone has to stand up and get this team some respect. Josh and Al were fouled numerous times down the stretch of that game, with no calls. True Hawks fans appreciate someone stepping up.

Rudy G@y is an inefficient max player who averages around 19 points, is an average rebounder and defender and doesn’t do much else to help his team win. And he would put the Hawks right back in the salary cap prison Ferry just removed us from. Other than that, he would bring excitement to the team and would be a clear (but costly) upgrade at SF.

In my estimation – you got what you asked for last eve.
You called me out as being bias … so as stated in that
*’`Blast`’*
against Josh last eve I poured it on.
In doing so:
Tell me one thing I said that was not factual !
You say:
” Quoting GRANDAD really gets you no credit.
The guy bashes Josh at every occasion,
and even has the nerve to talk about how terrible he is defensively ”
-typical of you to take out of context-
I inferred prior to that post;
it was going to be “negative” … (on purpose) … yet truthful.
I have always stated that I like Josh;
further;
that he confounds me.
I have stated on many occasions that he plays hard;
contrasting Josh to JJohnson in that regard.
-Yet-
you say that I consistently bash Josh.
I say that what I do is attempt to balance the negativity
on this blog about Al when mis-information [&/or] sarcasm
is spewed forth. e g ::
*sarcastic … all-star Al
*escort service
*diaperAl or whatever vava used to call him
*etc
Yes, I`ll admit to frustration from Josh – warranted.
In an attempt to balance I`ll come back with a similar critique
of Al at some point although not as scathing admittedly so.
One last item:
about context and staying within;
when I speak of KKorv or Cap`n Kirk defensively
I always reference their positioning within the team concept.
From a coaches eyes these traits are invaluable.
You sir, see basketball purely from a fans perspective.
Highlight reel dunks, spectacular blocks and so on & on we go.
There is much, much more to Winning, Championship Basketball
than the entertainment aspect [r e; Stern product].
Case in point:
LBJ – whom I personnally do not like as an individual,
-However-
I can appreciate LBJ from a perspective which you
would never observe.
Last yr LBJ was roundly criticized for passing up the final,
perhaps [winning] shot in some game or another.
On 2nd glance LBJ made the absolute correct basketball play.
This young man [LBJ] has grown by leaps and bounds in maturity
in just the last two yrs.
Why should I bring up LeBron while discussing Josh ?
-Maybe-
`tis because the light came on for LeBron;
therefore I draw a correlation.
In my humble judgement, Josh has passed the day when
his light will come on.
Rod:
read my words if you choose;
please discern my words accordingly,
but do not change my words.

It truly amazes me that so many of the ” true fans” on this site don’t get it about basketball teams. Horford is the kind of player who will play whatever role you give him. He showed this at UF, where he also won championships. Josh Smith came out of High School spoiled and immature, lacking fundamentals, but incredibly athletic drawing lots of comparisons to Dominique who like Smith, never won a championship. Drew won’t discipline his play which may end up costing Drew his job under a GM like Ferry seems to be. Smithlead

From two Blogs ago (Hard to keep up with Chris Vivlamore),
“The Mavericks have a high-profile, “hands-on” owner in Mark Cuban, a hard-nosed, former COY and superior strategist in Rick Carlisle, a former league MVP, Finals MVP and future HOFer in Dirk Nowitzki and “ch’ip” (championship) hardware (2011 NBA Championship) to “keep Cousins under control” and “in line.”
Highsider, No doubt Mark Cuban is a great owner. Even though he made a mistake by letting his “LEADER” (Tyson Chandler) and h is spark plug (Jason Terry) leave. Our ownership doesn’t rank close to Mark Cuban, but with addition of Ferry and ASG stepping back, I can argue there is a basketball man in charge of operations as opposed to a former internet kid who got lucky selling his company at the right time
As for Rick Carlisle, how do you think Cousins takes to this style? (see link below)
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/rick-carlisle-threatens-suspensions-slumping-dallas-mavericks-don-193040252–nba.html
Finally, Dirk is a Hall of Famer. No question. But who do you think Cousins would enjoy playing more with? A man with a heart (Josh Smith), a defensive one of a kind who complements him, or a declining aging Hall of Famer that shoots from outside and could never without the leader (TysonChandler) that the great owner let slip through his fingers?
As for past championships, I doubt that will sway Cousins one way or other

“The Mavericks team currently has a (win-loss) record of 13 – 21, which is ironically the same record the Kings (team) has, and “sits” in 12th place in the Western Conference Standings. As you can see, the Mavericks team is currently a “non-playoff team” and appears to be willing to take “the risk” on Cousins because, quite frankly, the (Mavericks) organization may see itself at or near the bottom with (virtually) nowhere to go but up. As a consequence, the Mavs may “roll the dice” and “take a gamble” on (DeMarcus) Cousins.”
High-sider, why should Hawks having (currently) third best record in East prevent them from going after Cousins? Do you really think the third best record (currently) is equal to getting past the second round (at best) of playoffs for Hawks with the current roster?
We just traded a six time All Star, a former number 2 draft pick (unworthy of that rank or his subsequent contract), and are rebuilding the team. This is by no means close to the roster that Ferry expects to have next year. This roster (as is), at best, gets to second round of playoffs. This roster struggles against teams with young big men (Pistons and Wizards) and old big men (Boston). Adding Cousins would be a huge move in the right direction

Quit trippin’. Danny Ferry has done a good job so far as GM of the Hawks but let’s not get carried away. Danny Ferry (who coincidentally was a No. 2 overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft) was a “bigger bust” than “Duck” aka “It was not a bad pick” aka Marvin Williams. Please remember that Danny Ferry played (all) four years of college basketball at Duke University and received the NCAA Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year Award in his senior season.
Danny Ferry never “lived up” to his college “top billing” when he came to the NBA. “Word is bond.”

I wouldn’t count on Ferry using that last roster spot until after the trade deadline..
I think Hawks could waive Tolliver (and not have to pay him for the rest of season), and pick up one of the waived SFs (if they look good in a Hawks workout). And that would preserve a roster spot for the deadline.

AJ…What makes Rudy G an “inefficient” scorer? His shooting % is down this year, but it’s still early. He’s been 45%+ for 5 straight years (45% for his career). That’s not bad for a guy out on the wing. Paul Pierce is a career 44% shooter. Danny Granger is a career 43% shooter. Shane Battier 43%. Luol Deng 46%. Grant Hill 48%. Metta World Peace 41%.
5-6 rebounds per game is above-avg for a SF as well. Rudy’s avgd 5.5+ rebounds per game for 6 straight years.
I’d be OK with Ferry trying to build around Rudy and Josh in the forward spots, rather than Josh and Al in the forward spots. Need a 7-footer either way though.

The Hawks’ leadership, “team chemistry” and “psyche” are already fragile at best. A current 3 seed in the East is better than a “lotto spot” (if you know what I mean). If you add a player like Cousins who could potentially be a distraction and disruption, the Hawks may go from a playoff team to a lottery team. You’re taking a “gamble” on a player with a recent “checkered past.” Don’t get me wrong; I’m all about redemption and second(, third, fourth, and, even, fifth) chances. Again, I would take a chance on Cousins if my team is currently a 7 or 8 seed or lower but not a 3 seed that could “nosedive’” at any time during the season. I’m sorry but “the risk” is just too great at this point (in time).

Duluth Joe, Josh is a man with a heart as you state, just needs to play with it all the time. Playing with heart doesn’t mean trotting back on D complaining and pointing for someone to get your man. Playing with heart is getting in there and rebounding, boxing out, getting loose balls not what your man JS does. JS has lazied his way thru the NBA, never developing post moves, not working on his shot, and assuming his athletic ability will be enough. Josh frustrates me because he has the most potential, but this far into his career I’m afraid we’ve seen the best………time to trade or find him an awesome supporting cast because Josh is not going to carry the Hawks, nor is Al and Josh going to, DF I am waiting for your next move…..

Just Joe, maybe I was too focused on this year… he has been pretty average. I don’t think he is a true MAX player. My biggest concern is his contract and how it impacts our ability to do more. If he can;t take us over the hump, there may not be any cap space to add pieces that would.

“Rudy G@y is an inefficient max player who averages around 19 points, is an average rebounder and defender and doesn’t do much else to help his team win. And he would put the Hawks right back in the salary cap prison Ferry just removed us from. Other than that, he would bring excitement to the team and would be a clear (but costly) upgrade at SF.”

Horford – He’s not Kevin Mchale. He’s not Rodman. He’s not Barkley. He’s not even Buck Williams or Dan Roundfield. He’s not even attempting to be any of the above. All he wants to do is stay in the league, remain healthy and bank contracts.
Josh Smith – The only area in which he is even close to an upper echelon player is Help Defense. Other than that, EVERYTHING Grandad said was absolutely 100% spot-on.

Najeh, I tried to post several opinions/rumors about Rudy in Memphis and the blog monster kept chewing up my posts. Then I noticed someone else did the old “@” thing to trick the system.
Regarding roster additions, my guess is that Ferry wants to keep that roster spot open for a possible 1 for 2 deal (or 2 for 3). I think quite a few of these guys who only received non-guaranteed contracts in the summer will still be available in 7-8 weeks. Not to mention that players who are maybe a little more proven and are bought out of their contract may be available later With Harris and Morrow a few days from rejoining the team, I doubt that Ferry even goes down the 10-day contract path.

“I’m going to let y’all figure that one out,” Rivers said. “I’m going to stay out of that. If it was the playoffs, I’d tell on him, but since it’s not, I’m going to just be quiet.”
Rivers took two subtle jabs with that remark: While offering a non-denial on Anthony’s actions, he made reference to reports that Atlanta Hawks general manager Danny Ferry snitched on Rajon Rondo for bumping a game official during Saturday night’s game in Atlanta, an act that led to Rondo being hit with a one-game suspension that forced him to sit out Monday’s game in New York. Ferry was fined $15,000 by the NBA for inappropriate interaction with game officials following the game.”

I agree with Astro Joe that future assets shouldn’t be compromised trying to improve this year’s team since it is a transition year, but if the Hawks could get Casspi for nothing (in other words, for Tolliver, Petro, or the option to swap 2nd round picks) I’d do it. Where was Korver’s (defensive) positioning on Paul Pierce in the 3rd quarter of Friday night’s game when Pierce “went off” for 17 (3rd quarter) points?
Probably on the bench, as Pierce got half of those points off of DeShawn after Korver kept getting called for touch fouls.
Korver is a good team defender, but he’s not going to be able to guard someone like Pierce in the post. Josh/Ivan/Deshawn should have been on Pierce for most of the game.

From one of vava’s favorite writers Charley Rosen
NBA’s most overrated players; What’s interesting to me is how many centers are on the list. Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Roy Hibbert, and Chris Kaman.
What was also interesting, is what he said about Roy Hibbert. “His appearance in last year’s All-Star game is more indicative of the shortage of outstanding centers in the NBA than is it of Hibbert’s skills.” (which is the same thing we say about Al Horford).

From Grantland, Zach Lowe says some nice things about the Hawks’ current starting lineup:
Atlanta Hawks
The lineup: Jeff Teague–Lou Williams–Kyle Korver–Josh Smith–Al Horford
The numbers: 200 minutes, Atlanta’s most-used lineup
Larry Drew decided to start this group only after Devin Harris’s foot issues cropped up, but he should think about making the change permanent. This five has thrived on both ends, outscoring opponents by 9.1 points per 100 possessions — about what the powerhouse Clippers have done for the full season, per NBA.com. As with the Golden State group, having multiple ball handlers and five skilled passers has resulted in a massive uptick in both assists and shooting percentages; the Hawks have assisted on 73 percent of baskets when these five play, an unthinkable number, and they’re shooting well from all over the floor. All the passing hasn’t resulted in many turnovers, either; this group has coughed it up on just 11.1 percent of its possessions, even better than New York’s insanely low league-best rate.
Neither Teague nor Williams is an elite spot-up guy, but both have done well enough hanging in the corners when the other works as the point guard. Korver’s running around screens creates openings for everyone else, and Williams is very cagey losing defenders around off-ball picks. Both Williams and Korver are very dangerous when Horford or Smith holds the ball at the elbows, and Utah-style “flex” plays for Williams have gotten him a lot of open jumpers.
Drew has also been good at drawing up pick-and-rolls that bend the defense away from Korver on the weak side, including a Suns-style dandy in which one big will roll down one side of the paint toward the hoop while the other big jets up the opposite side, catches a pass from Teague, and immediately skips a cross-court bullet to Korver.
But this group is also showing cracks. They barely get to the line, a teamwide issue for Atlanta, which is threatening to set the all-time league record for lowest free throw rate. They’ve struggled horribly on the defensive glass, the predictable result of a lack of size on the wing and Smith’s occasionally indifferent boxing out. Bulky wings will attack Korver in the post; Paul Pierce fouled him out in Boston’s stirring comeback over the weekend.
The early signs are good, especially since the same lineup with DeShawn Stevenson in Korver’s place has fared even better than this group. But it’s still early.

Why would ferry hire a coach with a 2-3 year expiration date (Skiles)? He hasn’t been in the playoffs since many around here were freaking out about the Game 5 loss at home to the Bucks.
OB, I think it is less about LD and more about the roster flexibility required to acquire long-term assets. Ferry signed a 6 year contract, he doesn’t need to mortgage the future for a 2nd round playoff loss this season. Any marginal player who can help this team will be available at the end of February. For every Dominic McGuire, there is a Damion James. It may be a different name but the result won’t likely be significantly different.
We have always wanted a PLAN. I think Ferry has one and it isn’t to use up cap space for an average vet SF with 1.5 left on his deal or use the last roster spot for someone who straddles the fence between the NBA and D league. I think if he can upgrade the roster by acquiring a better player WITH an expiring contract (or, like Casspi, could be cut loose in the summer), I think he will do it. if not, that last roster spot will be filled after the trade deadline.
I’d imagine that a GM can evaluate a head coach regardless of the talent on the bench. Based on things that we can’t see (or don’t know).

Also from that Grantland article:
9. Marvin Williams, Lost in Utah
It’s not just that Williams has disappointed for a team that needs production on the wing; it’s the way he has disappointed. Williams is a solid cutter and a useful corner shooter, but he has looked lost in Utah’s offense, taking a smaller role than ever before in his career. He’s more of a stand-still catch-and-shoot guy than someone who can make a play after running around a screen and catching on the move, and he just hasn’t looked at home as a Jazz man. Utah will surely bring up his name as the trade deadline approaches.
10. The Hawks’ Accelerated Shot Clock Countdown
The Atlanta in-arena experience generally isn’t very good, with “blah” crowds and weirdly frequent clock and scoreboard errors. But they sneak in some clever public-address work and sound effects, including a “tick-tock” countdown that accelerates when the enemy shot clock is running down. The players probably don’t notice it, but it stresses me out watching games — and I don’t even care about the outcomes. Fun stuff from the folks who brought you “MAR-VIN!” for every made Williams basket, and “That foul was offensive!” for enemy offensive fouls.

Personal Opinion:
O.J. Mayo is a semi-miniature version of Joe Johnson. He lives and dies by the jumper/3-point shot. Not as good of a defender as JJ and is turnover prone. If we want to increase our free throw rate, then this isn’t the guy to do it with. His numbers have been overblown with the absence of Dirk. His skill set is below that of our very own…Louis Williams. If Lou was to average the same amount of minutes as Mayo, he’d be just as good stats wise if not noticeably more.
As a few people have mentioned, either Al or Josh has to go. The one who stays will take over the PF spot. With that being said…let me mention this name again: Nikola Vucevic. He is up there with names such as Asik, Pekovich, and Varejao just to name a few. It’s his 2nd year in the NBA and has so much room to grow. It would be a huge pick up if we can acquire him.

Knowing him in high school and seeing how ripped he got in a short time frame, made me question it, but I know the kid stays in the weight room, which is something a lot of basketball players avoid, at least when I played they did. I don’t think the NBA does serious testing for all that stuff so it would not surprise me. I know for a fact many of the NFL dudes use on a regular basis. Knowing what I know, once I start seeing certain things, ligament tears, and muscle tears and strains, it tends to open my eyes. You would have more knowlegge than me on that. In his case, I don’t think the proof is there yet. He had surgey on his back, came back and does not look like he is fully healed and tore his labrum. If Dirk Notwiski wants out of Dallas, (he has one year left on his contract after this year)trade Al, Morrow, and Stephenson and your latest 1st round pick. Teague, Jenkins, Josh, Dirk, ZsaZsa. Replace ZsaZsa in the starting lineup in the offseason by signing Dwight Howard. So when Dirk’s contract expire next offseason, you will then have his money to go sign another high caliber wing player, and move Josh back to the Pf position with Howard at center. Rudy G@y is averaging 17.8 points and 5.8 rebounds this season. (USA Today Sports)The Grizzlies have been shopping G@y to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.
There’s no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving G@y include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.
In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $17.8 million and $19.3 million owed G@y in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped G@y..

Najeh,
Nets have to decide today or tomorrow if they want to guarantee Blatche’s contract for the rest of the season. Any interest if he becomes available? Melvin?

Hawks drop from 8th to 12th in Marc Stein’s power rankings.
The Hawks just endured their worst week of the season thanks to a one-point loss in Detroit and a 33-9 drubbing in the third quarter the next night to blow a big lead at home to Boston. Amazing that it took this long, though, to see them slip out of the top five in defensive efficiency..

I’m no fan of Blatche the player but I sure hope that the charge is false. It seemed like he was trying to mature as a person… I sincerely hope that this is one of those trumped-up charges.
Just Joe is right that Memphis Rudy is rebounding at a high rate for a SF. But he certainly hasn’t emerged as a true MAX player in the 2nd year of that contract.

good sound points rod on the subject and on d12. i said it in terms of speculation and what to expect of the guy if you pay him max. can he deliver on it or becomes more an elton brand done after his first contract? dont know the extent of injury but if surgery for a torn labrum as it was reported then he is done this year and it is a huge dilemma as to sound or not. so far his back has limited as the old young d12. what would he be next year the old old d12!
was more thinking in terms of chipper
remember all his foot issues in his mid thirties and that he never made it through a season without injury the last eight years it seems? good player, great hitter.

i am not naive on the subject of roids as they were available and offered to me in the summer of 69 to bulk up for baseball by a kid from another program. they have been around a long time.

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman is currently away from the team due to personal reasons and may miss tonight’s home game against the Atlanta Hawks. From the team’s PR Twitter account: CBSSports.com

If Memphis can get cap relief, a pick or two, and a solid role player like Jared Dudley, then that’s a good return for Rudy G.
“My” Atlanta offer would have looked something like Harris, Korver, Tolliver, and Houston’s pick for Rudy & Tony Wroten.

I’m glad we are catching the Timberwolves short-handed. After losing 3 of 4, I am hoping the Hawks will put together a little win streak.

So I guess we get to see Derrick Williams play tonight. Especially with Adelman likely missing the game. Stat stuffer vs. stat stuffer with Kirilenko battling Josh. I’m looking forward to an entertaining game. Time to break out the super-deluxe sized popcorn bowl.

YAY for DF …. seems like everything he does is done w/ a purpose. Having DF as our GM …. after Rick Sund ….. is like having Filet Mignon after bologna. Sorry, about that food analogy …. sitting here waiting on my lunch !

Read Zachs 10 things I like and dont like #9 in particular
I think everyone agrees on this besides that one ajc hawks blogger, what was the handle??…#2 not a bust? something like that
Tonights game has a huge impact on our Hawks(imo)
-If we lose, we may need to think about some trades and going ahead and start making moves
-If we win, we should stay the course, only trade if it makes sense and play the year out

Rev,
Look for LD to come out and say the Hawks have a tendency to let their guards down when an opponent is missing key players, so he would prefer if Minny had all their players available.
MsDee,
C-Viv has spoiled us, so I can’t help but wonder where is the second blog
