Vivlamore reporting.
Hawks general manager Danny Ferry was fined $15,000 by the NBA Monday for ‘inappropriate interaction’ with the game officials following Saturday’s loss to the Celtics.
The league did not reveal the reason for the penalty.
According to a person familiar with the situation, Ferry handed game officials a DVD following the 89-81 loss at Philips Arena.
As reported on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s web site following the game, Celtics guard Rajon Rondo made contact with game official Rodney Mott after being called for a charge with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter. Video of the incident was also detailed on NBA TV. Rondo lowered his shoulder while driving to the basket and collided with Hawks forward Josh Smith.
Rondo was not ejected for making contact with Mott. However, the league suspended Rondo for one game Monday for the incident and for a failure to cooperate with the league investigation. He will not play in Monday’s game against the Knicks.
It’s not the first time Rondo has made contact with an official in Atlanta. He was suspended for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals last season between the Hawks and Celtics. Rondo chest bumped referee Marc Davis with 41 seconds remaining in a Game 1 loss, earning a second technical foul and an ejection.

From one of vava’s favorite writers Charley Rosen
NBA’s most overrated players; What’s interesting to me is how many centers are on the list. Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Roy Hibbert, and Chris Kaman.
What was also interesting, is what he said about Roy Hibbert. “His appearance in last year’s All-Star game is more indicative of the shortage of outstanding centers in the NBA than is it of Hibbert’s skills.” (which is the same thing we say about Al Horford).

doc,
we need a guy with fire in his nostrils… but even if we offered him the job, he would not accept it.
word is that he hated his team, probably since they went for that trade of Ellis for Bogut.
Skiles likes D and a more slow paced game and we have a roster somewhat similar to MIL’s…

I think Korver can play the 2 and the 3. However, it needs to be as a bench player. I also think LD should go back to bringing Lou Williams off the bench.

From Grantland, Zach Lowe says some nice things about the Hawks’ current starting lineup:
Atlanta Hawks
The lineup: Jeff Teague–Lou Williams–Kyle Korver–Josh Smith–Al Horford
The numbers: 200 minutes, Atlanta’s most-used lineup
Larry Drew decided to start this group only after Devin Harris’s foot issues cropped up, but he should think about making the change permanent. This five has thrived on both ends, outscoring opponents by 9.1 points per 100 possessions — about what the powerhouse Clippers have done for the full season, per NBA.com. As with the Golden State group, having multiple ball handlers and five skilled passers has resulted in a massive uptick in both assists and shooting percentages; the Hawks have assisted on 73 percent of baskets when these five play, an unthinkable number, and they’re shooting well from all over the floor. All the passing hasn’t resulted in many turnovers, either; this group has coughed it up on just 11.1 percent of its possessions, even better than New York’s insanely low league-best rate.
Neither Teague nor Williams is an elite spot-up guy, but both have done well enough hanging in the corners when the other works as the point guard. Korver’s running around screens creates openings for everyone else, and Williams is very cagey losing defenders around off-ball picks. Both Williams and Korver are very dangerous when Horford or Smith holds the ball at the elbows, and Utah-style “flex” plays for Williams have gotten him a lot of open jumpers.
Drew has also been good at drawing up pick-and-rolls that bend the defense away from Korver on the weak side, including a Suns-style dandy in which one big will roll down one side of the paint toward the hoop while the other big jets up the opposite side, catches a pass from Teague, and immediately skips a cross-court bullet to Korver.
But this group is also showing cracks. They barely get to the line, a teamwide issue for Atlanta, which is threatening to set the all-time league record for lowest free throw rate. They’ve struggled horribly on the defensive glass, the predictable result of a lack of size on the wing and Smith’s occasionally indifferent boxing out. Bulky wings will attack Korver in the post; Paul Pierce fouled him out in Boston’s stirring comeback over the weekend.
The early signs are good, especially since the same lineup with DeShawn Stevenson in Korver’s place has fared even better than this group. But it’s still early.

Why would ferry hire a coach with a 2-3 year expiration date (Skiles)? He hasn’t been in the playoffs since many around here were freaking out about the Game 5 loss at home to the Bucks.
OB, I think it is less about LD and more about the roster flexibility required to acquire long-term assets. Ferry signed a 6 year contract, he doesn’t need to mortgage the future for a 2nd round playoff loss this season. Any marginal player who can help this team will be available at the end of February. For every Dominic McGuire, there is a Damion James. It may be a different name but the result won’t likely be significantly different.
We have always wanted a PLAN. I think Ferry has one and it isn’t to use up cap space for an average vet SF with 1.5 left on his deal or use the last roster spot for someone who straddles the fence between the NBA and D league. I think if he can upgrade the roster by acquiring a better player WITH an expiring contract (or, like Casspi, could be cut loose in the summer), I think he will do it. if not, that last roster spot will be filled after the trade deadline.
I’d imagine that a GM can evaluate a head coach regardless of the talent on the bench. Based on things that we can’t see (or don’t know).

I’d even look at trading Stevenson. He can’t defend anymore and his shooting is sketchy at times. Everyone on this team is fair game outside of Lou. Wonder if Ferry makes a move. Glad to see him get fined for what he did, but wish it was for something like a cheapshot or dirty play

JeJe, Josh didn’t box out in that Cleveland game because he was worried that a teammate would try and pass him the ball behind the 3 point line. He was distracted by his cowardice teammates. He was trying to make something happen (other than the defensive rebound). He was hiding an injury. The ref missed the call. A unicorn was flying over head. Keyshia Cole started singing to him. Varejao’s dandruff got in his eye. He was reading a nasty email from Dan Gilbert. Art Modell’s ghost started to haunt him. Whatever you do, don’t blame Josh.

Also from that Grantland article:
9. Marvin Williams, Lost in Utah
It’s not just that Williams has disappointed for a team that needs production on the wing; it’s the way he has disappointed. Williams is a solid cutter and a useful corner shooter, but he has looked lost in Utah’s offense, taking a smaller role than ever before in his career. He’s more of a stand-still catch-and-shoot guy than someone who can make a play after running around a screen and catching on the move, and he just hasn’t looked at home as a Jazz man. Utah will surely bring up his name as the trade deadline approaches.
10. The Hawks’ Accelerated Shot Clock Countdown
The Atlanta in-arena experience generally isn’t very good, with “blah” crowds and weirdly frequent clock and scoreboard errors. But they sneak in some clever public-address work and sound effects, including a “tick-tock” countdown that accelerates when the enemy shot clock is running down. The players probably don’t notice it, but it stresses me out watching games — and I don’t even care about the outcomes. Fun stuff from the folks who brought you “MAR-VIN!” for every made Williams basket, and “That foul was offensive!” for enemy offensive fouls.

So is his role on this team to pass up open shots to kick it to Josh for 3 pointer’s, and to stand in the paint and watch point guards continually lay the ball up in his face while he stands and watches because he does not think he is supposed to HELP on defense, while every other big tries to help?

Personal Opinion:
O.J. Mayo is a semi-miniature version of Joe Johnson. He lives and dies by the jumper/3-point shot. Not as good of a defender as JJ and is turnover prone. If we want to increase our free throw rate, then this isn’t the guy to do it with. His numbers have been overblown with the absence of Dirk. His skill set is below that of our very own…Louis Williams. If Lou was to average the same amount of minutes as Mayo, he’d be just as good stats wise if not noticeably more.
As a few people have mentioned, either Al or Josh has to go. The one who stays will take over the PF spot. With that being said…let me mention this name again: Nikola Vucevic. He is up there with names such as Asik, Pekovich, and Varejao just to name a few. It’s his 2nd year in the NBA and has so much room to grow. It would be a huge pick up if we can acquire him.

Knowing him in high school and seeing how ripped he got in a short time frame, made me question it, but I know the kid stays in the weight room, which is something a lot of basketball players avoid, at least when I played they did. I don’t think the NBA does serious testing for all that stuff so it would not surprise me. I know for a fact many of the NFL dudes use on a regular basis. Knowing what I know, once I start seeing certain things, ligament tears, and muscle tears and strains, it tends to open my eyes. You would have more knowlegge than me on that. In his case, I don’t think the proof is there yet. He had surgey on his back, came back and does not look like he is fully healed and tore his labrum. Could be any number of things like still compensating for the back issues. It would not surprise me.

If Dirk Notwiski wants out of Dallas, (he has one year left on his contract after this year)trade Al, Morrow, and Stephenson and your latest 1st round pick. Teague, Jenkins, Josh, Dirk, ZsaZsa. Replace ZsaZsa in the starting lineup in the offseason by signing Dwight Howard. So when Dirk’s contract expire next offseason, you will then have his money to go sign another high caliber wing player, and move Josh back to the Pf position with Howard at center. Dare I wish to say LBJ in a hawks uniform for Dirk’s money; (we all can dream can’t we).

The Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns are engaged in trade talks centered on forward Rudy G@y, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Rudy G@y is averaging 17.8 points and 5.8 rebounds this season. (USA Today Sports)The Grizzlies have been shopping G@y to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.
There’s no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving G@y include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.
In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $17.8 million and $19.3 million owed G@y in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped G@y..

The Hawks just endured their worst week of the season thanks to a one-point loss in Detroit and a 33-9 drubbing in the third quarter the next night to blow a big lead at home to Boston. Amazing that it took this long, though, to see them slip out of the top five in defensive efficiency..
