Vivlamore reporting from Auburn Hills, Michigan.
The Hawks take on the Pistons tonight and will use the same starting lineup from the past six games of Jeff Teague, Lou Williams, Kyle Korver, Josh Smith and Al Horford.
In speaking with coach Larry Drew before the game, he is wary of the Pistons’ bench players. It was the Detroit reserves, you’ll remember, who combined to score 85 points, erase a 22-point deficit and force two overtimes on Dec. 26 in a Hawks’ 126-119 win.
Will Bynum scored a game-high 31 points off the bench for the Pistons.
“We have to be better against their bench,” Drew said. “That particular game, their bench just played well. I don’t think that has happened to us thus far this season but that game. Their bench played well, really shot the ball well. We have to be better defensively. We know what each guy is capable of doing. Defensively we have the game plan, the game strategy and we just have to be good when those guys come into the game.
“We have to make those guys a priority. Given the way this team has played the last seven or eight ball games, their bench is a huge part of why they’ve had the success they’ve had. We have to really buckle down and we have to really zone in on their bench.”
The Pistons have won five of their past six games with the only loss coming to the Hawks.
Drew said the issues in blowing the 22-point lead rested mostly with his team.
“I was actually just in there watching a little bit of it,” Drew said. “Defensively, we had breakdowns. Offensively, just bad shot selection, bad floor spacing, bad execution. That was the result. It was funny as I was watching the fourth quarter. I believe at the six-minute mark we were up by 14 or 16 (points) and you had not seen that game or stopped the game at that point you would have never guessed it went to double overtime.
“We didn’t do a really good job offensively. We settled – a lot. When you settle, that’s the end result especially if you are not making the shots. And the Pistons just ran the ball down our throat. Bynum got to the basket pretty much at will. They had some guys who made some shots. You have to be more efficient in those situations. When you get a lead you have to understand how you got the lead and you have to learn how to really work the offense. That game we didn’t do it.”
In other news:
* The Hawks played without guards Devin Harris (sore left foot) and Anthony Morrow (right hip strain) and center Johan Petro (stomach illness). The three did not travel to Detroit and their status for Saturday’s game against the Celtics in unclear.
* Josh Smith ranks eighth on the Hawks’ franchise list with 5,001 rebounds. He entered Friday’s game trailing Cliff Hagan by 18 rebounds for seventh on the list.
“It’s a great honor,” Smith said after getting his milestone rebound against the Hornets Tuesday. “It lets me know I’m getting older. I still have a lot more in my tank to go but it’s a blessing to be doing this as long as I have.”
* Entering Friday’s game, Al Horford had 207 field goals this season with 45 (21.7 percent) assisted by Smith.

Ken Strckland,
(From previous blog) I ask you this question. We are behind the Knicks and the Heat in the standings. The Knicks have been starting Carmelo Anthony at the 4, and the Heat started Lebron James at the 4 in the finals last year. Based on your theory that Horford would mesh better with Howard than Josh would I ask you, based on the above knowledge, would Horford have a chance guarding Lebron or Melo? Who would he guard?

John Jenkins.
Last 3 games. 68% from the floor. 83% from 3 pt range.
For some reason Teague seems to look the other way when the 2 are on the court together. I would love Jenkins taking the shots that Tolliver ends up hoisting.

So 21% of Horford’s buckets come from the guy with low basketball IQ who should never get the ball unless he is on the block? Interesting….

I don’t think Jenkins is entirely comfortable playing with the starters yet. Sometimes he finds himself in the wrong position on the floor when other players are looking to pass to him. Doesn’t mean he isn’t playing well overall for a rookie, but some of Jenkins’ lack of touches while he’s on the floor are on him.

“Special co-sign to Rod’s latests posts. I was a non believer in this roster but if we reach the trade dealine in the top #4 (with Miami ahead in the division we can only be #4 right?) then we should definitively try something that could fill in needs and make adjustments even if we had to accept (some) salary.” – vava74 @5:54pm, 01/04/2013 (FTPB)
No, if the Heat finish the regular season as the No. 1 seed (in the Eastern Conference), the Hawks could (theoretically) finish (as high) as the No. 2 seed. Case in point, this (Hawks) team is currently a No. 3 seed in the East.
Division winners can finish no lower than a No. 4 seed but are not guaranteed home court advantage. Remember the 2012 Hawks-Celtics first round playoff match-up. The Celtics team was a No. 4 seed and the Hawks team was a No. 5 seed but the Hawks had home court advantage.
Read the (NBA) Playoff Tie-Break Procedures.
“Playoff Tie-Break Procedures
Teams 1 to 4 in each conference are the three division winners and the team with the next best regular-season record, with the seeding of these four teams determined by regular-season record. The playoffs seedings of Teams 5 to 8 are based upon regular-season record. Ties are broken pursuant to the rules set forth below.”

If this game turns around it will be because the guards start playing better. Teague has been awful, Lou has been invisible, and Korver’s shot is off. Josh and Al can’t do it all on their own.

I guess this is going as expected.
Horford can’t stop Monroe (apparently), as I thought might be the case.
Josh isn’t stopping anybody either.
Pistons are wearing us out in the paint.
Seems the only Hawk interested in rebounding is Al Horford with 10 at the half. Next closest guy is Lou Williams with three…that’s plenty for him…
Josh is getting his points. Give him kudos for that, but the efficiency isn’t there. It’s not like he’s hot , he’s just taking more shots than anybody else. 14 shots to get 14 points, made just one of three free throws, goes 1-4 from three point land, 1 assist. Not efficient, just getting his.
Sorry, but that’s the honest truth.
Teague getting a handful of dimes…but nothing else. Lou doing slightly more.
Korver can’t buy a shot.
Not having Deshawn, Devin, and Morrow…is it supposed to hurt this bad? Or is it something else?

Teague must go…..I know I know we all fell in love with him round 2 against chicago but is he worth 11 mill per??? Did we not learn from the past when we paid Al for potential rather than merit??? Two stark differences between the Pistons and the Hawks are that a) their big men set real screens, and b) their guards get around screens. Folks keep making me laugh with this one….
Why do we keep expecting Al Horford to suddenly become this “rim defender”, when he never WAS one to begin with?
He mostly blocks shots of smaller players, but he is NOT a rim defender by trade. Wasn’t in college, ain’t in the Pros.
Josh Smith, on the other hand, is a NATURAL shot-blocking, rim defender. It’s one of the things he does.
Funny how some folks who claim to be right about every damn thing can’t see this.
It’s why some folks want him gone and want a “real” center in there (not that all “real” centers block shots and defend the rim relentlessly…ask Brook “softie” Lopez).
Get over it. He CAN’T do it.

Yeah, let’s take Al Horford out of the game. That’s a winning move.
He ain’t stoping the Pistons at the rim, but if he goes, then this team suddenly won’t be able to rebound, much less score efficiently.
No shot-blocking….
But we’re getting beat to death on the boards. The team has 31 rebounds. Al has 13 of those.
We only have three effective scorers tonight. Two of them are shooting less than 50% from the field.
Al is shooting 8 of 10.

One point loss.
All because Horford can’t block shots and forced Josh Smith to the bench because he demanded to play the PF position in the last few minutes and LD said “oookaaayyyy.”
Damn Horford.

Hawks are 6-5 in their last 11 games, and in that time have two losses to non-playoff teams, three double-digit losses, and only one double-digit win.

Anyone following the OKC game?
Again, they blow it wide open in a matter of seconds ala the Magic/Kareem Lakers back in the day.
Sorry, but everyone else is playing for 2nd place.
