Coach Larry Drew was named the Eastern Conference’s Coach of the Month for December, the NBA announced Wednesday.
The Hawks went 10-5 in December, tying the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks had winning streaks of four, three and two games during the month. They also won two overtime games.
Other nominees from the East were the Heats’ Erik Spoelstra, the Pacers’ Frank Vogel and the Knicks’ Mike Woodson. The Clippers’ Vinny Del Negro was named the Western Conference’s Coach of the Month.
Drew said Hawks general manager Danny Ferry broke the news to him about the selection.
“I had no idea I was in the running,” Drew told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s always good to be recognized. I’m deeply honored to be selected. I share this honor with my entire coaching staff. They deserve this honor for all the hard work they’ve put in.
“My mind set has always been to just take it game by game.”
Overall, the Hawks are 20-10 and in third place in the Eastern Conference. They are just 1-1/2 games behind Southeast Division foe the Heat and a half game behind the Knicks. They also have the best road record in the Eastern Conference at 9-5.
Drew, who is in the final year of his contract with the Hawks, is the fourth Hawks head coach to be honored at Coach of the Month, joining Mike Fratello, Bob Weiss and Lenny Wilkins.

Drew is doing a great job of coaching but the organization is not doing all it can to set him up for success. Give us a ligament center and the Hawks will make noise in the east!

LD – well deserved, but his overall winning record is because the team was developed already, unlike Woody and many of the other coaches prior to him. LD though, always takes the high road and is a great representative of this organization. It’s time for his team to succeed with greater challenge.
The only team we struggle to match up with will be Miami. I think we match up fine with the Knicks.
While DRose it out, it’s time to step over the Bulls and Celtics. That puts you in a good position in the East. Is it possible the Celtics miss the playoffs? No way they stand pat without trying to make a major move.

In LD’s first season, we won 35% of those games. Last season, we won 40% of those games. Hawks are currently 8-8 (50%) against teams above .500. It will be interesting to see what that number is at the end of the season.

Congrats LD and Hawks organization. January will def be a test though.
Playing Brooklyn twice, New York, Spurs, Boston twice, Chicago, etc.
If we go 9-7 in January, I’ll be happy. 10-6 would be even better.
