Atlanta Hawks: A behind-the-scenes look at the team facilities

Vivlamore reporting.

As promised -  long ago -  here is the photo gallery offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Hawks and their facilities at Philips Arena. I took over 60 photos but trimmed them down to the 20 you will see by clicking on the link below. I tried to have some fun with it as well so don’t take my comments too seriously!

Enjoy.

Calderon averages 1.4 trips to the line and he’s pretty good. Felton 1.8 and shoots under 40% and some folks think he’s an upgrade on Teague.

The great Jason Kidd at 1.1 ft attempts per game…

Sam Mitchell believes this could be one reason why Bargnani hasn’t turned out to be the franchise player some thought he could become. “I wasn’t allowed to coach Andrea the same way I was allowed to coach Jose (Calderon),” Mitchell told Tim & Sid on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Wednesday. “I was a hard ass on Jose; I was hard on him, but look at the type of player he turned out to be. “I was not allowed to be that tough on Andrea because within the organization we felt he couldn’t take it. And my whole thing was if he can’t take it then we can’t build around him. And no one thought Jose could take it, and Jose did.”

I’m glad a lot of folks enjoyed the photo tour. I can answer a few of the questions while waiting for Hawks practice this morning.

Mike: I think Philips compares favorably. I haven’t been to all the arenas yet. The visitor locker rooms are usually much worse than the home team, as is the case at Philips.

NCBravesfan: Ferry has done a lot of changes and I believe more are to come. The workout equipment at the practice court is new. The training room was completely remodeled. The collage in the media dining room is new. There is better lighting. Those types of things.

Najeh: The practice court is on the same level with everything but the upstairs weight room. The media entrance is actually just off the dining room. If you look closely you can see the door in the far background.

If you guys are interested, I can post some other photos in the blog from time to time.

On the frequency of blog question, it’s always my intent to post one or two blogs a day. Sometimes I have to post another when news breaks, like Drew being named coach of the month yesterday. When I can, I will try from now on to give you guys advance warning.

Thanks.

CViv – Thanks for the warning!!

Chalmers 1.4 ft attempts per game. Vasquez at 2.1. Rondos only at 2.5, and he plays over 5 1/2 minutes per game than Jeff. He and Jeff drive similarly.

Not sure of your point JJ other than a preference Jeff gets more fouls called against him.

I wish Jeff were cp3

JT gets to the stripe more the above post should say. Especially with Devin down, Jeff’s gotta play a little tentative and conservative, there are no true backup PGs on the roster.

Jeff 14.0 and 8.6 last 5 games. 4 of the 5 games he’s had 8+ assists, 6 in the other one.

And with Devin down, I’m sure the other teams scouting report says go at Teague, he’s gotta be a matador, because IDE he’s gone the hawks are in trouble with no true backuo

SteveW…my point is, for a guard that takes a large % of his shots near the rim, Teague does not draw many fouls. 30th in the league this year in FTA’s per game for PG’s (2.0 per game). For such a good free throw shooter, it would seem we are leaving points off the board by Teague not drawing more fouls. As this team continues to search for efficient half court offense, picking up points at the free throw line is one way to do it.

“Slim – Knicks started the season as the oldest team in nba history at 32 years and 240 days average age”

SteveW, that is a major concern! Looks like this team cant stay healthy. It may haunt them down the stretch..I would be surprised if they do not fade…The loss of Felton for up to 6 weeks may hurt them more than they will readily admit..

doc, jr has incredible talent but he should not be taking 20 shots a game.I agree he is no Superstar..
Coach Woodson better reel this dude in or he will become a problem..

Congrats to LD. Dude might actually have a job next season (yeah, it’s early).

Love how well Josh Smith played against New Orleans. Top notch stuff.

I liked Horford’s offensive production as well, but I don’t like it when he almost doesn’t show up on the glass.

Speaking of glass….Zaza Pachulia has been a real blessing for this team in that area, among others.

John Jenkins looks more and more like a smart draft pick and a legit NBA player. Glad to see that. Now I wonder if he’ll make Devin “I have speedy claxton syndrome” Harris obsolete by the trade deadline?

Slimjr ,

Good observations on the Knicks. Remains to be seen if Woody has learned anything from his past coaching experiences.

Agreed on the loss of Felton. When he’s motivated, he makes a HUGE difference for that team. Kidd is too old (and too brittle anymore). There is no one else…

Melvin,

I would gladly welcome Josh Childress bk!! Our plays would work wonders for him considering the fact that he is a slasher/cutter. Also, we are the only team with his better averages. I would take him and waive Mike Scott or Tolliver.

I’m not sure about his defense, but JJ Hickson has talent, and he is only 24 years old. In the 2010 season, he averaged 14 and 9 in 28 mpg with Cleveland. In the 2011 season, he averaged 15 and 8 in 32 mpg with Portland. So averaging 12 and 11 this season should not be a huge surprise.

That being said, I doubt he gets a max contract, but I think $8 mil is a good estimate, which would double his current salary. I would be surprised if Portland lets him get away though.

What will be interesting, is how much money Josh is looking for. The good thing for the Hawks is we can offer him 5 years, while other teams can only offer 4.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dwight’s back is not 100%. But I’m with AJ. I will not trade for him, but when he goes to FA, I want to be first in line to talk to him.

Hawks will probably have multiple first round picks, salary cap space, Josh to help recruit him, and 3 pt shooters to surround him with. And in the East, the biggest threat is the Heat, so it will be easier to get to the NBA finals. The West is loaded.

The Lakers can offer one more year, and an additional $20 mil, but as Kobe said….they are old, and slow, plus no salary cap space or draft picks to improve next year.

Plus I don’t think Dwight wants to be under Kobe’s thumb/shadow. If he comes to the Hawks, he can share the spotlight with Josh. However, Houston and Dallas will probably be high on his list too.

Just Joe,

I think part of the problem with JT is he does not sell the contact, because he is so focused on getting his shot off. Maybe if he focuses more on driving into the defender, and not worry about making the basket…maybe he will get more calls. I also think LD needs to do a better job of working the refs, because the Hawks as a whole tend to be on the losing end of calls (imo).

Melvin,

I would take Chills on a pro-rated vet min contract. He is a legit SF, and used to move well without the ball, so I think it would be a low risk, high reward.

Big Ray, I think the decision on trading Harris will be more about LD’s comfort with playing LouWill at PG for 30+ minutes/game (in the event of a Teague injury) more than Jenkins’ scoring ability. I would probably make the gamble because I wouldn’t put too many eggs into this transition-year basket. I think the player who becomes imminently expendable with Jenkins’ solid play is Morrow (more than Harris).

OB, IMO, the incumbent team has the leverage based on the current CBA. previously, if a UFA didn’t like the contract offer he could almost force a S&T and still get every penny of his money. Now, if the incumbent team doesn’t offer their free agent what they want over 5 years, the player has to decide to leave the 5th year salary on the table. I think any player who isn’t getting a max deal has to be careful how aggressively they try to negotiate. Also, with other quality bigs like Millsap, Al Jefferson and David West (none of whom are max players), I’m not sure that Ferry will feel compelled to overpay. I think he has to keep enough flexibility to add… because there is no reason for him to believe that we’re simply 1 player away from greatness.

Knicks need a PG? Devin Harris for Marcus camby. Neither one can stay healthy. And we’d def. need to find another Pg. I think camby could help us. Or even Kurt Thomas

I know salaries and such but still

If John Jenkins is going to make anyone “obsolete by the trade deadline” it will probably be Morrow. Morrow for Brewer? Or Morrow for a lottery protected 1st? (Probably won’t be able to get much better than that for Morrow … but I could be wrong.)

Some of LD’s comments;

1) First and foremost, he mentioned playing with energy. Imagine that.
2) Pistons are a tough match-up position by position, so we have to offset that in different ways
3) He wants teams to start adjusting to us
4) He wants to find more minutes for JJ2
5) He likes playing under the radar
6) In the past, Josh OR Al would have a good game, but this season, they have done a great job of playing off each other, and having good games together

Danny Ferry was on 680 The Fan earlier this morning. Rude did a horrible job with the interview. I didn’t get much from it other than some “shout-outs” for Jenkins, DeShawn, Al & Josh. And of course, he talked about how hard LD and his staff work to keep the players prepared for games.

For some reason, Rude’s first question was about the Lakers and managing an older team. I couldn’t figure why the first question to the Hawks GM would be about a team a thousand miles away. Obviously, he doesn’t know enough about the local team to ask a question about the Hawks. Pathetic.

If Andy Reid ends up with KC, I think there is a good chance Vick ends up out there. They already have a good RB, WR, and TE. The wild card will be if they want to use the #1 pick on Geno Smith or not.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they pass on Geno Smith (the WV QB) at #1, and pick a QB in round 2 or 3 for Andy Reid and Vick to groom.
