Game thread: Drew concerned Hawks settling for 3-pointers in transition

Vivlamore reporting from New Orleans.

Hawks coach Larry Drew expressed concern with his team’s tendency to settle for 3-point attempts in transition Tuesday.

The good news: The Hawks set a franchise record in Monday’s loss to the Rockets with their fourth straight game of at least 10 3-pointers.

The bad news: Some of the 3-point attempts are coming on the run when Drew would like to see the action move to the front of the rim.

“In transition, we have to run for layups,” Drew said before the Hawks played at the Hornets. “We can’t just run to the 3-point line. We’ve gotten in trouble a little bit with that in the past where we do have an advantage in transition and we run straight to the 3-point line and not really attacking the basket.”

Drew said that was an issue Monday against the Rockets. The Hawks had 23 3-point attempts, making 12.

“We are still trying to find a consistency in that area. We show them tape. We talk about it. We always gravitate to that 3-point line. … That will be a point of emphasis tonight.”

In the past four games, the Hawks have made 13 3s against the Pistons, 11 against the Cavaliers, 10 against the Pacers and the 12 against the Rockets.

The Hawks are seventh in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .381. They also have allowed the seventh highest opponent 3-point percentage at .377.

* The Hawks will start a lineup of Jeff Teague, Lou Williams, Kyle Korver, Josh Smith and Al Horford. Drew said there will be no limitation on Smith, who returned Monday after missing a game with a strained right hip flexor.

“He did have limitations last night,” Drew said. “He came through it and he felt fine. We are pretty much going to let him go tonight.”

* The Hawks play the final of four games in four cities in five days. I asked Drew if he thought his team was tired.

“I think we are a little tired but this is the NBA,” Drew said. “We’ve just got to suck it up. When you get to this part of the season you do get a little fatigued. You start getting a nicks, little bruises. This is where you have to roll your sleeves up and gut it out. Every team goes through it.  We just have to deal with it.”

* The Hawks were without guards Devin Harris (sore left foot) and Anthony Morrow (right hip strain) who remained in Atlanta for the two-game road trip. Harris missed his eighth straight game due to the injury. Morrow missed his third straight.

* The Hawks will have to deal with the Hornets’ Eric Gordon tonight. Gordon made his season debut in the Hornets’ last game and scored 24 points off the bench. He also had seven assists and two steals.

Hornets coach Monty Williams said Gordon will come off the bench again tonight. Williams said he wants to be cautious with Gordon, who only played nine games last season and had arthroscopic surgery on his knee because of a bone bruise.

“Part of me just wants to play him,” Williams said. “I think I made a mistake last year. We didn’t know he was injured but it might have been too much. … We want to be smart.”

Drew is fully aware of the difference Gordon could make.

“He is a phenomenal scoring machine,” Drew said. “With the ball in his hands, particularly on pick-and-rolls, he can make shots, he can get to the basket and he’s strong enough to create contact and finish. He is a guy who we are really going to have to be concerned with tonight.”

“Also, when we got within 5 LD should have gone with Teague, Lou, Josh, Al and Zaza. The job by the reserves was done.”

Exactly. The bench occasionally plays well but LD has left them in too long in several games recently.

“I just watched the 4th quarter and frankly, I think that there is no reason to feel particularly bad.

Delfino was hitting everything. His 3s were backbreakers.”

Would have been nice — and maybe a different outcome — if the Hawks consistently rotated out to the open 3 point shooters. They were a step slow defensively the entire night. Can’t be slow defensively against the fastest paced team in the league.

I have no problem with Korver, Morrow, and Jenkins spotting up for 3 in transition. Everyone else should be going to the hoop.

I’m a little surprised that LD is complaining about transition offense today, considering that transition defense was the problem yesterday.

FTPB:

“Topic of Debate – Josh Smith aka the “Smoove”: Should he stay or should he go?”

“The Hawks need to be trying to acquire a legit #1 option who makes them a title contender. If trading Josh makes that happen, they should trade him. If they can do so without trading Josh, then they should keep him. The focus shouldn’t be on whether Josh stays or goes; it should be on what is the best and quickest way to get a superstar or two on this team. Josh would be an excellent complementary piece to keep around, but if they have to get rid of him to get to the next level they should do it.” – Najeh

The exact same goes for Horford, too. If it takes trading him to get better (ie a superstar), do it.

LD needs to be concerned about putting the best working group on the floor and throw away loyalties to fading dreams and hopes. No need to mention names because that name will be all over this blog before the game is over.

Hawks strength is outside shooting. Drew knows that. Taking threes when you have shooters like Korver, Morrow, Jenkins, Lou, and even Stephenson, is fine. If you have no inside game, you can’t manufacture one just by talking the talk.

NY is doing fine taking the outside shots. Until we get some low post players, we are mostly an outside shooting team, no matter what the good talk is

Overall, we make 60.6% of our FGs in transition, with us scoring 1.22 points per play

That’s 4th in the league.

Best transition 3 point shooters:

- Jenkins: 100% . . ( 3 – 3 )
- Williams: 55.6% . . ( 5 – 9 )

Is it possible to win this game? From what I am seeing it is a high possibility to lose it. I know, I know Josh has done this and Josh has done that, the fact remains that better ball movement with the other 4 players was evident when he was not in the game. Those outside shots he is taking is going to kill the HAWKS in a close game if we get close again. The lead N.O. had when he was out evaporated and we lost it when he came back in, just a fact.

Najeh, remember that Duncan had 4 years of college. Let’s see where the Brow is in 3 more years.

I don’t see him getting to Duncan’s skill level, but he learns quickly. We’ll see. I sure wouldn’t mind watching him regularly. He makes pretty solid decisions. If he can develop a go-to move, he’ll be hard to handle in the future. Great shotblocker, though.

Horford must not have watched KY last year, lol.

The Hawks are stinking it up:

1. Several second chance points by Hornets because Al & Josh not boxing out.
2. Larry Drew has Zaza chasing Ryan Andersen out on the perimeter.
3. Josh has thrown away at least two fast break opportunities by trying to bring the ball up court.
4. The Hawks just seem to be going through the motions.

So far, not all that impressed with Anthony Davis on the offensive end, although he is a good athlete and has potential defensively. They were calling him the best big man since Duncan, who averaged 20 a game as a rookie. Davis doesn’t have those kind of skills.

Let me be the first to say ima J Smoove fan. What he has done for this team and city has been awesome, but as much as i like him, this tam cant be built around him. He’s our best player physically, but i would actually be willing to trade hime for ANY defensive minded big and a 1st rounder…. Al is a pick and pop 4 who grabs boards, but struggles to defend the paint at times. Smoove is an uber-athletic tweener with great timing on blocks and an excellent weakside defender, but, while improved in this area, takes jumpshots when the jumpshot is the weakest part of his game. Neither one of them has a strong back to the basket game. The sad part is, this was pretty much the same scouting report they both had coming out of the draft…SMH

Good point.

He reminded me more of Marcus Camby — and even somewhat of a taller version of Josh — when he was in college. Wasn’t really a go to offensive option even there and doesn’t have the scoring ability right now to be one, but if he can develop a couple of post moves he may get there, who knows.

Danny Ferry-who to get rid of? Al Horribleford. This dude has been hanging around on this team for far too long. He hasn’t shown any growth in his interior game-uh, he has none. He has a weak a@# looking bailout set shot from the foul line if he gets to that spot-but moreoften-he just posts out higher than his position and has no back to the basket game; he never developed into a back to the basket player. He never spent the summer (even when he was well), developing an inside game. Lebron developed his. He punks out when the defense intensifies around him. Get rid of the bum. Hawks playing like they don’t have a passion for the game. All these rooks for NO look like they want to be out there playing, while we look tired and sloppy. That’s problem #1 with this squad; not shot selection or LD’s substitution patterns, but a lack of competitive energy on the court. If Josh would run all over the floor and focus on being an athletic beast on both ends, he’ll become one of the best players in the game all because he has a motor and drive to succeed. These refs are sneaky. Now they are giving the Hawks calls at the end of the game so the free throw margin won’t look that bad…

The “Smoove” has played well tonight, a damn outstanding game and some of his silliness did not hurt and i’m one who will be afraid of the next game because of his play tonight

Nice win by the Hawks. Especially on a 2nd night of a back to back on the road…

“Northcyde, Don’t get me wrong, J-Smoove is great and he was the reason I started watching the Hawks a few years ago, but tell me the last time you saw him sprint back on defense, offense, or really box someone out with a purpose. ”

Every night. Dude almost has a triple double tonight and you stay say he was not hustling so obviously you will never see it.
