Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 95, Hornets 86 (updated)

Vivlamore reporting from New Orleans.

They Hawks were tired as they started their fourth game in five days. Coach Larry Drew admitted to such before Tuesday’s game against the Hornets.

They didn’t wake up until the second half. After sleep-walking through the first 24 minutes, with many defensive lapses, the Hawks erased an early double-digit deficit en route to a 95-86 victory over the Hornets Tuesday at the New Orleans Arena.

The Hawks outscored the Hornets 28-14 in the third quarter to turn around a six-point deficit. They led 72-64 going into the final quarter thanks to a 15-2 run early in the third that changed the momentum. Josh Smith had 10 points in the period to cap an impressive statistical effort of 23 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and three steals. With his 12th board, he reached the 5,000 rebound career milestone.

“We had a letdown in the first two quarters and I wanted to come out with the energy and effort,” Smith said. “It so happened that I made some shots in the third quarter. Everybody was feeding me. My teammates were looking for me and I think I was real efficient.”

The Hawks (20-10) led by as many as eight points early in the fourth quarter and fought back the Hornets. They sealed the win by scoring the final six points.

Drew said he was going to ride Smith’s hot hand even though he usually rest the forward at the end of the third quarter.

“He was phenomenal,” Drew said. “Every physical play where that ball was involved, he was there. He really made an impact. He did it on both ends of the floor. He defended. He blocked shots. Offensively, he got into a real good rhythm and we started just playing off him.”

Drew said he told Smith to motion to him should he need that rest. He never got a signal.

Al Horford added 20 points for the Hawks. Zaza Pachulia had another big night with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Kover chipped in with 14 points, with 11 coming in the second half. The Hawks didn’t attempt their first free throw of the game until Pachulia went to the line with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter.

“We wanted to bounce back from last night (a 123-104 loss at Houston),” Pachulia said. “It wasn’t pretty at all. I wasn’t happy with my effort. We wanted to come out and play with energy and that’s what we did.”

The Hornets (7-24), with the worst record in the Western Conference, were led by Ryan Anderson with 23 points. The Hornets got 11 points from Eric Gordon, who only played nine games last season and had arthroscopic surgery on his knee because of a bone bruise.

The Hawks finished 3-1 in their tiresome four-game span.

The Hornets led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter and held on for a 50-44 halftime lead.

The Hornets did most of their damage from 3-point range. They finished the first half shooting 63.6 percent (7 of 11) from long range. Anderson led the way with 13 first-half points, including three 3-pointers. The Hawks shot just 28.6 percent (4 of 14) from long range in the opening 24 minutes. That included 3-pointers from Smith and Korver in the final minute.

“It wasn’t a strategy move at all,” Drew said of the second-half difference defensively. “It was matter of us putting forth the effort and making sure we made a conscious effort of getting to their 3-point shooters. The second half we did. (Anderson) made a couple more 3’s but we were there to contest them and that’s all you can ask.

Smith had 11 first-half points and Horford had 10. Pachulia played 10 minutes in the first half with eight points and seven rebounds. The other Hawks starters struggled in the first half as Lou Williams (5), Korver (3) and Jeff Teague (2) combined to make 4 of 18 shots.

“That was the encouraging thing I told them at halftime,” Drew said. “(Those three players) were 4 for 18 from the field but we were only six points down.”

The Hawks have a couple days to rest up before playing at Detroit Friday and home against Boston Saturday.

“THe loss of Raymond Felton is big in NewYork!”

Bet they wish they had JLin!

Gdad: Excellent breakdown of Teague’s defensive shortcomings. Agree 100%.

“Teague has the tools to be better defensivley, and i dont know why he hasn’t been called out about energy on D.”

Me either! Except by me of course :)

“All the Hawks need to do is trade Devin Harris and a second round pick to the Sun for Michael Beasley. Then trade Deshawn Stevenson to the Kings for Jimmer Fredette.”

They think Jimmer is the second coming out there. No way they trade him for a player that for all intents and purposes is already retired. B. Easy? Is that who you get your weed from because you must be high.

Steve…does that even work with the Salary Cap…..?

Dwight must be ecstatic to play in a system that forced his recovery time and hardly every utilizes him for anything aside from defense and rebounding…oh wait he’s in LA.

Lakers next five games: Clippers, Denver, Houston, Spurs and Thunder

Wouldn’t be surprised if they went 0-5 during that span.

Teague has motivation/concentration problems.

Yes, his defense is lacking many times, but yesterday, as it has been his habit, his playing during the 4th quarter improved (although he did miss those FTs).

An example? He drew a foul on Gordon in a crucial possession and if I am not wrong, blocked a shot also in the 4th.

So far he has been suffering from a significant duality of criteria which could change with time and more league wide recognition: he is whistled for almost every single contact he makes on his opponent on defense and does not get the call on offense when he gets fouled.

Not excluding him of responsibility, merely presenting some facts.

The injury bug has just never been kind to Eric Gordon. It’ll be a small miracle if he makes it to season’s end.

I think someone pointed out yesterday (SteveW?), correctly, that Teague did contribute on other facets of the game:

http://www.popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20130101&game=ATLNOR

Look at his “help value” stat of 14 (rebounds+assists+steals+blocks-turnovers). It was second best behind Josh who had another behemoth game with an “help value” of 26.

We can’t disregard that.

El segundo puesto del Este está cerca.Debemos ganar a Detroit y Boston.New York perderá el próximo tambiém.

John Jenkins – now 55% from the field, 47% from 3, perfect from the free throw line, more assists than turnovers. Keep giving this kid playing time.

I am particularly impressed by JJ2’s ability to finish in the paint (in comparison with my expectations). He is NOT a one trick pony and I think he will have a very long career in the NBA.

Granted, his handles and his agility are a bit suspect, but he is crafty, has a very good touch and his passing is also pretty decent.

The only teams worse than Atlanta at defending the 3 are Utah, Charlotte, and Phoenix. Hawks allowing their opponents to hit 38.1% of their 3’s. Direct result of not being able to stop kick outs after dribble penetration? Forwards that don’t close well? By design to allow long jumpers?

How can utah be so poor at defending the 3? They have a long SF who should make it difficult for shooters.

HAHAHA.

Im loving John Jenkins out there, just wish he knew how to get open. After practices, Jenkins should pick Korver’s brain as to how to successfully get open for Teague, Lou & Josh to give him the ball! I mean, everytime Jenkins shoots, I expect it to go in. That would be my ONLY knock on him, GETTING OPEN PROPERLY TO RECEIVE THE BALL!!

Hawks have to sag too much on D because of a lack of rim protector. makes it too hard to recover to the 3’s.

Hickson is better than Amare as Thabeet is better than Oden. I’d wait a few weeks before making the Hickson declaration.

Jenkins continues to impress me with his all-around play. I think most guys who were elite scorers in college would enter the NBA thinking score-score-score. but we continue to see Jenkins make the extra pass, work hard on defense (he isn’t great but the effort is clearly there) and he just has a really nice feel for the game. I don’t remember watching him force shots like we see with other guys who don’t get much playing time. He seems to understand that he will get more playing time by being a complete ball player and not just a guy who knocks down open 3s.

Any relationship between Teague’s recent struggles and his new starting backcourt partner?

And can we please stop comparing Teague to Bibby? The last time Bibby was on the team, so was Hilton Armstrong. Should we compare Ivan to Hilton? Teague needs to be compared to the current set of starting PGs, not guys who are watching gmaes at home. Anyone think that Jrue Holliday gets compared to Eric Snow?

Glad, to see the Hawks battle back from a tough lost. Man, I see Harden is getting those Durant and Lebron type calls now…YOU CAN’T TOUCH HIM…no wonder…he is putting up the big numbers…with his skills…he’s gonna be tough to handle!

Right now, I don’t know how you keep Josh or Al off the EC All Star team.

The Hawks have manage to hold on to third in EC without DHarris…is been a struggle…but they continue to battle…clearly, DHarris has been missed…it’s going to interesting to see what moves Danny is going to make…you just get the feeling…he is going to do something.

PICK THAT DEE UP TEAGUE…YOU CAN DO IT…GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AJ,

Any relationship between Teague’s recent struggles and his new starting backcourt partner?.

If I’m not mistaken, Teague has had good game(s) with Lou starting, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a relationship there.

One thing I’ve noticed though is early in the game, Teague is inconsistent when it comes to pushing the pace. Not sure if it’s LD telling him to slow it down, but he needs to be more aggressive early on. And LD shouldnt have to remind him before every game.

Slim,

Knicks were 11-33 from 3 last night. If they are not making their 3’s, they lose (just like the Hawks), because they shoot a ton of them.

Najeh,

If the Hawks are top 4 in the East at the all-star break, then coaches will finally get Josh in the game. He had a great year last year, and is having a good year this year. And since Horford does not get to go up against other centers, I doubt he gets in over Josh.
