Atlanta Hawks: Harris, Morrow not on trip to Houston

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks will be without guard Devin Harris (sore left foot) and Anthony Morrow ( right hip strain) for Monday’s game against the Rockets. Neither traveled with the team to Houston on Sunday.

Harris will miss his seventh straight game due to the foot injury. Morrow will miss his second straight game with the hip injury. Whether either player will be able to join the team for Tuesday’s game against the Hornets in New Orleans is undetermined.

Josh Smith, who missed Saturday’s game with a strained right hip flexor, made the trip to Houston and could return to the lineup Monday or Tuesday.

Harris and Morrow have dang-near negative trade value at this point. We’d have to throw in a few dozen Krispy Kreme donuts just to get another team to take these busted up players with expiring contracts.

Devin Harris has played perfectly fine this season when healthy. I have no idea where these Devin Harris haters come from. The only knock on him is he has issues staying healthy. People act like he is Cedric Bozeman or Matt Freije

Harris and Morrow to the Lakers for Antwan Jamison who as 6 straight dnp-cd. Those 2 fit Dantoni run and gun system and Jamison provides the Hawks the scoring small forward they need and more scoring off the bench.

FTPB,

Big Ray,

If LD does not get a new contract, I think it will be because Ferry wants to bring in his own guy (maybe one of the Spurs assistants).

OBRIEN-I also agree that Ferry won’t resign Drew despite what the team does. In addition to wanting to bring in his own HC, his decision will most likely be based on what Drew didn’t do. And what he didn’t do is show a committment to developing and playing rookies and younger players.

Ferry made it known almost immediately after being hired that he valued the development of rookies and younger players. He also said he wanted to establish a player development program and indicated our 2 draft picks would definitely be on the opening roster.

Over the past 2-3yrs, Drew’s chosen to cut his draft picks in favor of minimum contract and/or past their prime vets like JCollins, LDampier, MBibby, JStackhouse, VRad, WGreen, JPargo, KHinrich, EThomas, JPowell etc.

We need a HC that’s on the same page with his GM as far as decipline, agenda, and player personnel decisions are concerned. It just doesn’t appear that’s the case with Drew and Ferry. I’ll bet Ferry cringes everytime he sees Josh continuing to play to his weaknesses rather than his strengths, while Drew does what appears to be absolutely nothing.

If the Hawks finishes 2nd or 3rd in the east, and dare I say first. If a coach does this with no superstars andd team full of new faces (9)and Danny Ferry fires this guy who would be coach of the year, he is stupid as a GM. During the Pre-season analysis on NBA TV Mike Fratello said that if Larry Drew was able to get this team with all it’s new players to the Playoffs as an eigth seed he deserves coach of the year. It sounds as if a lot of people here wants LD fired regardless of the success he is having, to me that means most of you are just biased. If LD had got off to a start with this team like Mike Brown with Lakers or Avery with the nets you might have some validity to your thoughts. But he did not with less higher profiled called superstar players. The man deserves a gauranteed 3 year extension, because if Danny Ferry Does not give it to him LD will find a job pretty easy next based on his success with this hawks team.

EJH-Ferry’s approach is based on his vision for the Hawks longterm. Based on Drew’s decisions and moves to this point, especially when it comes to our rookies and less experienced players, it doesn’t appear he shares Ferry’s longterm vision. Like Woodson before him, Drew seems to be playing for a new contract on his terms rather than Ferrys.

I shall also state Danny Ferry did not expect this team to have this kind of success. He Jetisoned Marvin and Joe to rebuild. He thought this team would play hard and compete but not be the third best team in the east. This may have something to do with the coach and his staff and the way the players play hard for him and respect him. LD has dealt with two players who have strong personalities in Josh and Ivan, but yet they respect him and play hard for him. This team does not quit on their coach as in Brooklyn. Danny Ferry did all those transactions this past summer to be a player if free agency next summer, i.e. gathering now two first round picks and 2 second round picks. He truly believed this team was in tear down and rebuild, the coach has now made him have to take a second look, as the team is not that far off from being a true contender. Coach Drew and the hawks record speaks for itself. Also look at the Oakland Raiders; they hired Mike McKenzie as the new GM, he fired coach Hugh Jackson to bring in his own coach from Denver, this is after Hugh Jackson Had the Raiders at 8-8 record and competing for that divison’s title. Now look at where they are. All because the GM wanted to bring in his own guy and now they have taken a step or two back.

I think Drew’s future has everything to do with his offensive/defensive philosophies and how closely they align with Ferry’s. My opinion is that it has absolutely nothing to do with how well this team does this year (unless something crazy happens like us advancing to the conference finals). Ferry is not here so that he can oversee LD doing things the “LD way”. He will want a head coach that is an extension of himself and that shares the same thoughts on how to build a championship team.

Shoot! If it’s about developing rookies, Drew still has a whale of time to develop his two rookies, so I don’t even think that’s a moot point. Now, if he stops playing Jenkins after his last performance, then y’all might have a point. But this Hawks team has over achieved so far, and no way the head coach does not get some credit for it. Especially if they continue to play well and stay close to the top in the East.

“Otto Porter

Shot creation: Porter is a skilled 6′8, 205-pound small forward with an advanced mid-range game. He gets most of his points within the flow of the offense, but his go-to move is posting up and using his length to get off nearly incontestable shots from anywhere within 15-18 feet off the rim. At the next level, he’ll need to put on weight in order to establish post position against bigger defenders. (13 points a game on 52 percent shooting, 2.5 free throws attempted)

Shooting: Porter is a good shooter, but what stands out is the quality of shots he gets. He rarely forces the action in order to take a contested 20+ footer, a common problem with many 6′8+ wings who make the game harder than it needs to be. Nevertheless, since he won’t be a primary offensive option in the NBA, he’ll need to continue refining his spot-up 3-point shot in order to space the floor. (Shooting 50/54/67, 0.5 three-pointers a game)

Defense: He has quick feet and long arms (7′1 wingspan) on a 6′8 frame, which should allow him to match up with players at the 2 and the 3. As he gains weight, he may eventually become a small-ball 4. At the college level, Porter is a terror as a help-side defender, particularly in Georgetown’s 2-3 zone defense, with his length and feel for the game allowing him to fill up a box score. (2.4 steals, 1.6 blocks a game)

Rebounding: Porter’s length, athleticism and activity allow him to clear the glass at a high level for a small forward. (Averaging 6.9 rebounds a game)

Passing: Like most of Thompson’s Hoya players, Porter is a pass-first player with excellent vision who knows how to find the open man. He also has the ability to run the pick-and-roll, which is very intriguing for a 6′8 player. (Averaging 3.4 assists on 1.4 turnovers a game)”

You can’t separate performance when healthy from missing a bunch of games due to a variety of injuries. Idealy, Harris and Morrow would have been valuable as both experienced contributors AND expiring contracts. With about 7 weeks until the trade deadline, their value seems almost exclusively based on their expiring deals. Could the team that trades for them reasonably expect them to play ~35 games after the All-Star break?

Strickland, I think GMs understand that last year was an anomaly because of the strike-shortened season and the virtual elimination of practices during the season. And Ferry was obviously so impressed with Benson that he cut him a few weeks ago. Said differently, I doubt that anyone other than a few bloggers blame LD for cutting loose a late 2nd round draft pick who clearly needed development during a season when development would be hard to find, for vets who already knew the ins and outs of the NBA.

IMO, Ferry walked through the door with his list of head coach9ing candidates. LD has to move up Ferry’s list of ideal head coaches for the jo. And I would guess that he has, in fact, moved up the list so far in the early season. And this is coming from someone who immediately rejected the LD hiring. He is winning and that is the objective. Not rookie development (exclusively)… WINNING!

And put me on the side of optimizing the value of Morrow, Harris, Deshawn & Korver over the first 40-45 games OVER “developing” Jenkins with on-court experience. Jenkins can learn during sessions with the amazing Atkinson and NVE while the trade value for those vets increase. This is a transition year, finding ways to acquire assets for July, 2013 is more important than Jenkins getting consistent playing time during the first 45 gamjes of his rookie season.

Ferry is thinking beyond this season… Jenkins is NOT taking this team to the ECF in his rookie season. I don’t care if he plays 35 minutes/game.

Blast,

They are not talking about this just this year… Drew has ignored his rookies every season he has coached. Teague is only where is his at now thanks to Hinrich getting injured in the Bulls playoff series, Drew was force to play Teague. If it wasn’t for Hinrich getting injured Teague would still be playing off the bench and probably averaging less than 20 minutes. Remember Crawford, the guy they used has a bag of chips in the Hinrich trade, he is now the leading scorer for the Wizards.

ASTRO JOE-I think LDrew, not Ferry, made the roster cuts this season. However, Ferry did speak out and make sure Drew didn’t cut either of our draft picks, like he’s done in the past. And since this is Ferry’s 1st yr as our GM, he obviously didn’t cut Benson or anyone else last yr.

However, it was likely Ferry’s decision to sign Benson to the summer league roster and give him an invite to training camp. After that, it was Drew’s decision to cut him.

” Drew has ignored his rookies every season he has coached. ”

What would you do as a coach if you have no job security past the current year. What do you think you would be evaluated based on? Developing rookies or wins and losses? If you manage a project, and have 3 employees and one of them has potential but you have to deliver, would you put your experienced veterans to important tasks, or do you put the green employee with lots of potential to the task and risk unemployment?

Are you going to hold the GM(s) and ownership accountable for player development also? Because they are more guilty than the coach.

First year Larry Drew is here, he is paid one of lowest salaries in league (if not the lowest), and no guaranteed contract for 2nd year. The team won 53 games the year prior with Bibby as point guard. Bibby decline is quicker than most expected. Larry Drew trying to win as many games as possible. He tried to ride the Bibby train, till that train resulted in a team revolt on a trip out west that resulted in the debacle that was the Kirk Hinrich trade. If Larry Drew was on a “MULTI YEAR” contract, he may have given Jeff Teague (a non classic point guard) more chances. As it were he was told to win now. He was on Rick Sund’s plan, not on a coaching development/player development plan (and he was on ASG plan to increase value of franchise with as many wins as possible so ASG could sell to highest bidder). Bibby’s decline was so fast, other contending teams took risk on him (Miami) and gave him a contract. Only to see the decline was real. But again, don’t hold a coach accountable for non-development of Teague if he was not secure past that year (and he had Jamal to play point guard).

This year look at what Ferry has done. He drafted a shooting guard. Then loaded the team with shooting guards (some of the best in NBA). How is Drew supposed to give playing time to a rookie ahead of Korver and Morrow and Lou. Again Drew is on a one year contract.

THE MISTAKE DANNY FERRY MADE, is extend an offer to Larry Drew for only one year. Give the man a multi-year contract if you want player development as a criteria. All the savings from Joe Johnson salary could pay for 3-4 year contract for coach Drew. If Drew didn’t develop rookies, then you know. He is trying to win games we all enjoy and want.

But don’t give a pass to GM Danny Ferry on his coaching move. Otherwise he can give you all the happy talk about player development, but is not putting his money where his mouth is. Yes, Ferry should be commanded for letting Joe Johnson and Marvin trades happen. Perhaps GM of the year candidate for those moves. But his move relative to Drew has been a big fail.

EJH, right-on.

I heard him say beginning of season in person, ” I am nervous but excited”.

Think, coach Drew took a mix last year of many new “useless” parts, and had a successful year in a shortened season.

Again, this year, SO FAR, he has taken many new faces, many veterans, and is more successful than most expected.

Credit is due man who is mixing and matching and using parts as needed. I wonder what other “assistant coach” from Spurs can get Josh and Al and Teague and mix them up with all our new veterans and rookies, and Ivan, and keep them all humming?

I am not a season ticket holder so I have no idea how much interaction they have with owners. But in the Lakers’ case, if their opinion really mattered, Phil Jackson would have been hired instead of Mike D’Antoni. I don’t know of a single Laker fan who wanted D’Antoni over Jackson.

Maybe season ticket holders’ opinions matter in the big picture, when it comes to retaining a coach or letting him go, but I have a hard time seeing it affecting day to day management or statements to the press.

Yes doc, looks like Vick maybe toast…That light bulb is pretty dim right about now Sir!

Looks like the Knicks are getting hit with a rash of injuries? Does not help they have the oldest squad in the league.. Amare is coming back real soon. They need Anthony back yesterday along with Felton!

” SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The question has hung over Carmelo Anthony nearly since the first day he joined the New York Knicks, and it will likely be debated once again in the coming days.

Can he and Amar’e Stoudemire play well – and win – together?

There’s no denying that Anthony has played his best, as have the Knicks as a whole, while Stoudemire has been sidelined the first two months of this season. But with Stoudemire now expected to return on Tuesday, Anthony is quick to roll his eyes at the thought that New York can’t be a better team with the former All-Star forward back on the floor.

“We need him,” Anthony told Yahoo! Sports after the Knicks’ 106-105 loss to the Sacramento Kings. “I know we are playing well, but the more bodies, the better, especially at this point where guys are doing well. …We are ready for him.”

Stoudemire has yet to play this season after having surgery on his left knee in late October. He’s expected to practice with the Knicks on Sunday and Monday. He completed a series of shooting drills prior to the Kings game, but didn’t have much to say about his pending return.

“I will be back soon,” he said. “I’m not talking right now, but I will be back soon.”

[Related: Kings deny Knicks comeback with wild game-winning three]

The Knicks are riddled with injuries beyond Stoudemire. Anthony has missed two straight games with a hyperextended left knee. Forward Rasheed Wallace has missed eight straight games with a sore left foot. Guard Raymond Felton is out at least four weeks with a fractured right pinkie finger. Guard Iman Shumpert expects to return from knee surgery as late as February.

Amar’e Stoudemire, left, and Carmelo Anthony have won one playoff game together. (AP)Regardless, Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he expects to have enough players for Stoudemire to have a sound practice and scrimmage Sunday and Monday.

“I’m going to put him through a full practice in terms of what we do and in terms of running up and down,” Woodson said. “We will be banging some with him, too, just to see where he is. Hopefully, there won’t be any setbacks and he will be ready to go on New Year’s Day.”

Stoudemire recently worked out with the Knicks’ Development League affiliate in Erie, N.Y. While he was a little rusty in the first practice, he impressed the Knicks’ coaching staff and front office officials in the second workout when he drop-stepped and elevated for a hard dunk over one of the Erie players. Stoudemire is in good condition and ran the floor well during the workouts, but the Knicks still want to see him practice with them prior to clearing him.

“He showed that he still has that bounce he’s known for,” said one source who saw Stoudemire work out.

[Also: Jeff Van Gundy only interested in Nets job if vacant]

Anthony has started at power forward in Stoudemire’s absence and is enjoying possibly his finest season, averaging 28.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. The Knicks also have won 21 games, most in the Eastern Conference. Yet, in their two seasons together, Anthony and Stoudemire haven’t meshed well offensively while playing small forward and power forward, respectively.

Stoudemire is expected to initially come off the bench when he returns and be given limited minutes. Anthony also is hopeful he’ll be back on Tuesday. If Stoudemire eventually returns to the starting lineup, veteran forward-center Kurt Thomas would likely go to the bench.

“I’ll gauge it when he gets in a game and see how he’s playing,” Woodson said of how much Stoudemire will play. “He’s not going to come back and play 30 minutes a game. That’s impossible.”

Knicks center Marcus Camby finds the concerns regarding Anthony and Stoudemire laughable.

Stoudemire “is hungrier than anything because he keeps hearing that he and ‘Melo can’t coexist on the basketball court,” Camby said. “You have to give a guy like Amar’e a lot of credit because during that free agent period [in 2010] he was the only one that wanted to take a lot of responsibility and play under a microscope. Just how he handled things once ‘Melo decided to come here … there has been no ego from what I have has seen. He wants to prove a lot of people wrong on the aspect that they can’t coexist.” YahooSports-

as much as i liked mv7 and defended him until he finally admitted his involvement in illegal activities, it was obvious he didnt take studying seriously nor was ever described as the first there and the last to leave, choosing to depend on his amazing physical abilities and live life on the edge. those attributes that mv7 neglected are the same attributes rg3 is getting cred for having from day one.

Broncos LB Joe Mays broke his fibula at the end of October, with 9 weeks left in the season, and was placed on season ending IR. Giants RB Andre Brown broke his fibula at the end of November, with 5 weeks left in the season, and was placed on season ending IR. Raiders OT Robert Gallery broke his fibula in Week 2 of 2009 and missed 11 weeks. Reggie Bush broke his fibula in week 2 of the 2010 season and missed 10 weeks. I am not a doctor but I certainly can’t find any examples of NFL players who broke a fibula and missed less than half the season, especially not players who are reliant on speed and agility.

MattP,

What I realised is that Drew had veterans on the bench playing better defence and offense that Jenkins. Morrow, and even Tolliver. You can see that by how many turnovers Jenkins had. Now, one can argue that he had those turnovers because he was not getting that many minutes to get to know the other players, but one could also argue that Drew drew stayed with him despite those turnovers and fouls.

It’s a two way street. I like Jenkins game, but he is one of two rookies on Hawks bench. I believe his time will come. It’s simply waiting your time wether thru injuries or getting more experienced.

Falcons lose Vick

Star QB to miss at least six weeks with broken fibula
Posted: Saturday August 16, 2003 8:58 PM
Updated: Sunday August 17, 2003 12:18 AM
If all goes well, Michael Vick might return in time for a Week 5 matchup against Minnesota. AP
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta star Michael Vick fractured his right fibula Saturday night in an exhibition loss to Baltimore, and Falcons owner Arthur Blank said the quarterback will be sidelined at least six weeks.

The Ravens (1-1) held off Atlanta 13-10 despite a 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Falcons rookie Bryan Scott with 1:51 left. After Atlanta recovered an onside kick, third-string quarterback Kurt Kittner threw an interception, sealing the Falcons’ second loss in two games.

Baltimore rookie Kyle Boller, battling Chris Redman and Anthony Wright for the starting quarterback job, threw a 1-yard TD pass to Terry Jones Jr. in the third quarter, and Matt Stover added two field goals.

Blank said Vick wouldn’t have surgery. If Vick’s out six weeks, he’ll miss the first four games of the regular season and would return Oct. 5 against Minnesota.

“This team will have to pull together, and we’ll all have to play at a little higher level than they were going to before,” Blank said. “But they have the capacity to do that.”

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb had a similar injury last year and was out two months.

so as above, mcnabb did it in under 8 weeks and was 1-1 in the playoffs that year.

from my looking back it suggests by data drawn from yahoo, from injury 8/16, to the field again 11/30, the approximate time back was 15 weeks for mv7, closer to four months. that is a very prolonged recuperation for a non-operative uncomplicated fibula fracture that some can get back from in six weeks which was the original expectation. those other injuries i really dont know anything about them to discuss their severity. anyway they had significantly shorter periods to recovery than mv7 as well or the end of the season was close he the recuperation intervals.

One thing worth noting in defense of Drew… Avery Johnson complained that he didn’t have the respect of his players because the Nets did not give him a contract extension and brought him into the season as a lame duck. Meanwhile Drew is in the exact same contract situation and thus far obviously has the respect of his players. That’s good personal politics on Drew’s part.

In “finishing” highlights, Porter didn’t get above the rim a single time. Low release point on jumper, almost touches ball to forehead. 22% from 3. Not singling him out. Me and Slim’s favorite, DWilliams, has been below the rim all year.

The season ticket holders weren’t getting the product they were paying for, so Brown had to take the fall of it. Not sure how closely you follow the Lakers, but this was clearly a case of Jim Buss vindictively sticking it to Phil Jackson one last time. Ric Bucher polled several NBA GMs and asked what would be the top 10 of the 2009 NBA draft if they knew what they knew now. Here’s there top 10, with actual draft position in parenthesis (No Teague!).

1. Blake Griffin (1)
2. James Harden (3)
3. Jrue Holiday (17)
4. Steph Curry (7)
5. Ricky Rubio (5)
6. Ty Lawson (18)
7. Taj Gibson (26)

10. Brandon Jennings (10)

Apart from Rubio stayed in Barcelona for one year more, all other 9 players got regular minutes from the on set of their careers.

Teague has just crossed the 82 game barrier as a starter.

He is far beyond perfect but his potential is still untapped. Let’s see what he be doing from now on.

For the moment he is already showing that he can close games, as I had anticipated, since crunch time is when he can better use his skill set: handle the rock and attack the rim with his speed.

To: W.R. Terrell, Mookie Blaylock, keith and all other bloggers who want Josh Smith aka “the ‘Smoove’” “shipped out” of Atlanta

I don’t know if this trade scenario (between the Hawks and Wizards) has been proposed before but it (the trade) is successful on (the) ESPN NBA Trade Machine and provides a (temporary) “stop-gap” solution that addresses the Hawks’ needs/issues at SF and C. The trade scenario/proposal is as follows:

1) Hawks get Emeka Okafor (C), Trevor Ariza (SF) and A.J. Price (PG) [which allows Al (Horford) "to slide" to (the) PF (position)].

2) Wizards get Josh Smith (SF/PF), Devin Harris (PG) and Johan Petro (C).

According to Hollinger’s (Projection) Analysis, this trade scenario results in -2 wins and +1 win(s) for the Hawks and Wizards, respectively. Please note Hollinger’s Analysis is a(n) projection, assumption, hypothesis, theory, or educated guess and does not (necessarily) guarantee that the Hawks will “regress” and, conversely, (that) the Wizards will “progress” from this trade scenario/proposal.

If you trade Josh for a long-term salary, you lose most of your salary flexibility in the summer. Neither Okafor nor Nene (too banged up too often) are worth losing that cap flexibility (IMO). We have seen this before. Saw it with Vick, saw it last year with Cam Newton. The minute RG3 does something THEY don’t like the winds will change. Always wait until a little adversity strikes before crowning the guy king. I was not a big Vick fan, but questioning the guys heart concerning an injury is nuts. If the guy did not feel confident coming back from a broken fibula with the worst offensive line in the NFL, when our whole offense was based on him avoiding the rush, I’ll take his word for it. Also Vick could have practiced more and all the other nonsense you mentioned but he also brought the Falcons from the dregs of the NFL and actually won playoff games. Once Matty Ice does that, then he’s over the hump. Until then, he is not.

Rod, now that I agree with wholeheartedly. Which is why I keep bringing up OJ Mayo’s player option this summer. He won’t likely get a max contract offer and I’m not convinced he will want to stay with an aging Dallas squad. If the Hawks can’t get a true superstar, then upgrading the wing positions will be key. If Teague continues to ply consistently, the Hawks could do far worse than a 4-guard rotation of Teague, Mayo, LouWill & Jenkins.

MV7-Idk why people even talk about him at all, he is a mediocre quarterback at best, im sure i could spend my time looking through archives of career stats and come up with two placebo type scenarios where i list player A’s stats vs player B’s stats and show you vick is worse than alex smith or some other quarterback no one cares to talk about, the only reason i can rationalize why he is discussed still is he is a black qb and idk why that is such a big deal.

Josh trades- stop just stop. i also do not understand why hawks fans cant see we are truly a “team”. everyone seems to like each other and we pass the ball well. when a guy like josh or al is injured/sick w/e we have others that are capable of stepping up. we do not need to trade josh as we can win without him after one game at home vs the pacers. LD is a great coach and I think the players for the most part respect him, I do believe however that if we truly want a NBA championship we will have to get a different coach that has credentials that josh cant overstep like he does with 1st time coach LD.

Kirk was a rental who helped win one series vs. Orlando with his defense on Jameer. Along with scoring from Jamal and Joe Johnson. Along with Drew decision to defend Howard one on one.

Hinrich scoring average has been lower than Crawford every year since trade. Not to mention Wizards got Singleton with 2011 draft. Those are not rentals and will improve.

Hinrich is a temporary backup fill in for Rose. After Rose is back he will slide to backup (Hamilton will start if healthy)

We disagree on trade for Kirk being of any long term benefit for Hawks. It was another example of a GM who at best was lazy, at worst incompetent.

For any and all trade scenarios; one must consider:
” Team ” Building as priority #1.

Perhaps we could get a better fit for Josh;
-Paul George comes to mind- [$al / cntract match notwithstanding]
but, even though the positional fit is better,
and the tradeoff of Josh`s baggage seems tantalizing,
at this moment we do not have any:

This is just pure speculation on my part, but what if mgt encouraged Drew to start playing JJenkins to get him ready to take on what could be a bigger role after the trade deadline.

It could be an indication of mgts willingness or intention of making a deadline trade that could involve DHarris, DStevenson, and/or AMorrow. If we could pickup a decent backup SF with some size, rebounding and DEF skills in that trade, it would definitely improve the team.

Other than ATolliver and Petro, I don’t believe the Hawks will attempt to trade any other players at the deadline, unless someone just blows us away with an offer for Josh.

The Hawks have 2 1st rd picks. We can trade one, along with an expiring contract or 2, and use the other in the upcoming draft. We’re in a position, and have more than enough desirable assets, to improve this yrs team at the trade deadline. And what’s even more important, we can do it without having to trade Josh, or any of our other key pieces.

I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that by the trade deadline DFerry will have seen enough to make a decision on which of our potential FAs he wants to resign. The remaining FAs can be used at the trade deadline and packaged along with one of our 1st and/or 2nd rd picks.

Astro Joe

Strickland, folk have been suggesting since July that Morrow, Korver, DeShawn, Petro and/or Harris would not make it past the trade deadline. It is a transition year… build their trade value early and then hopefully move them for future assets. That is why I have been saying for weeks that playing jenkins in his first 30 games is not all of that important. This is a throw-away year. The REAL Danny Ferry team will be built this summer. All reports indicate that he wanted Lopez and/or Brooks for Joe. He got neither. That suggests that he was more interested in the cap relief than he was in the returning assets. It is a transition year. An interim season. Anyone who purchases a Korver, Harris, Stevenson or Morrow jersey has money to burn and is only interested in owning a conversation piece. And frankly, rather Jenkins is ready or not is also unimportant. It isn’t as if Ferry will not trade an expiring contract for a future asset because of the status of Jenkins. I seriously doubt that Jenkins’ readiness is a factor in future trades or LD’s evaluation.

ASTRO JOE-Can’t disagree with some of what you said. I can believe JJenkins development is a nonissue with LDrew, but I seriously doubt if it’s a nonissue to Ferry.

If Ferry was even remotely serious about establishing a development for his rookies and younger players, surely JJenkins would head his list of players to be developed. I don’t see this as a throw away yr, although few saw this team coming together so quickly and performing so successfully.

I do feel that this is an evaluation yr, considering the number of pending FAs we have on our roster. Ferry will attempt to resign some, possibly trade others, while letting the remaining ones walk. His most important decisions will involve JTeague, JSmith, IJohnson and ZPachulia.

I believe KKorver has proven his value, along with LWilliams. The rest, excluding our rookies, are on the elimination block. I see 8 returning players off this yrs roster(Zaza, Horford, Josh, Lou, Ivan, Jenkins, Scott, and Teague). Add a FA or 2 and a draft pick or 2, and we have next yrs roster.

Is there any trade value for Josh Smith now with his expiring contract? I think he is so over rated with low basketball IQ- Finally seeing some good ball movement and good basketball from I think players that can shoot and pass the ball, i.e. Kyle Korver, John Jenkins, Anthony Morrow, Louis Williams, Jeff Teague, Deshawn Stevenson, and Al Horford, and Zaza-

Only guy that fits the ole Joe Johnson Marvin Williams is guess who Josh “ME” Smith- Let him be somebody elses problem and lets get some players or some picks for this guy- Our GM looks like a genius now with the Marvin and especially Joe Johnson trade- Joe is a Max player averaging 16 points a game with an under 500 team in Brooklyn he looks worse than he did last year- I think Josh only gets worse- He is an above average player with great skills- That’s basically a lot of the NBA, fyi-

I want to see the same starting lineup tonight that the HAWKS used against the Pacers. I know there are some folks that think the “Smoove” makes the HAWKS a better team and that is simply not the case. I say rest him for at least 5 more games and see what the outcome is. LD may start him tonight but the chemistry that’s being developed will fade rapidly. The “Smoove” has a lot of athletic talent, I mean amazing talent but he is a cancer to team play because he just cannot play to his strengths. ZaZa earned the right to start, ALs game is a lot better when the “Smoove” is not on the floor, the rest of the team benefits too but for all those who think highlioght reels makes a basketball player then keeping wishing and looking for “FOOLS” gold.

@ Doc. Have you ever wondered why Philly paid an aging, injury prone, lost a step and leaping ability Elton Brand over a young energetic and athletic, jump to the moon shot blocker Josh Smith? It’s called common sense. Anyone who thinks that teams will be lining up for the “Smoove” at trade deadline are seriously ill. The “Smoove” is not coachable and serious teams who want to win will not tolerate that kind of distraction. There’s not a team in the NBA that will not give the “Smoove” an outside shot, they are well aware that he is the HAWKS weakest link.

The link below has a discussion of RG3 (Robert Griffin, III) and MV7 (Mike Vick) starting approximately @15:26 and @36:55. There is also a discussion of who should be NFL MVP starting approximately @42:08 as well as a discussion on race among head coaches (in sports) starting at approximately @56:20.

Anyone knows the status of Josh Smith Tonight?

I dont see Mike Scott on the roster next year. He is a undersized pf with no athleticism, plays no d, and prefers jump shots. I watched him in college and wasnt a fan.

I honestly think the damage Vick caused to the Falcons is overblown. They had one bad year because of his legal issues and to be honest with better coaching they should have won at least 4 more games that year. It was more of an embarrassment to the team than anything. They had one bad season, many more previous to that. It was a blessing for the Falcons so I dont understand why some are still so mad at dude.

keith,

I think Okafor has two years left on his contract. Again, the trade scenario was for the “disgruntled” (Atlanta Hawks’ fans) concerning Josh Smith aka “the ‘Smoove.’” I’m sure those Hawks’ fans upset with “the ‘Smoove’” would love to see him (Josh Smith) end up on a last place team especially if that last place team is in the Eastern Conference and the Southeast Division. They (those “disgruntled” fans) would see that (Josh on a last place team) as a sign of “poetic justice” and “comeuppance” for (the) “Smoove.”

I’m entertaining myself on this blog – nothing (really) serious.

cp, if ICE Man lose another playoff game and go 0-4 the Fan base will start to turn on him.. Coach Smith will be good as gone..Greenbay, Seattle, and the 49′ers are all formidable opponents for these 2012 Falcons for sure.

No more excuses.. This playoff game in two weeks is a must win for the Falcons.

The Hawks need Josh tonight on the road..Without him, they have no shot to defeat Houston..

w r me thinks what i say is not going to agree with you

we were lucky billy king made his decision

go back and see i said josh’s numbers over the next five years would fsse exceed anything elton could do. i huge waste of money for philly

josh on philly might have been an al star by now

i dint think we would have matched philly as we did memphis

it was a travesty the way we treated josh much like the knicks did lin … “son, go find your contract.”

billy king did us an even greater favor by taking jj off our hands. not a more one sided trade sonce bk gave sheed to the pistons along with a title.

king will not last much longer with the russian mafia.

as for qb’s let me know records as well. by the numbers i guess i go with b and that is who you want me to say.

Absolutely, this will be a blow out game without Josh. Harden will get 8 FT Attemps with Josh available, and 16 if he isnt

MW Peace did Harden the biggest favor of his career by elbowing him; now you can’t touch the guy. 11 FT Attempts per game come on now. How much will he get tonight. hmmm im feeling 18-20 from the Line. JEEZ how did we not switch harden for joe johnson

@ doc – So correct. A really bad move by the 76ers signing Brand. I think he was coming off an Achilles tendon injury (played only the last 8 games the previous season). Philly ended up eating the last 18 million of Brand’s contract thru amnesty…..Josh was a RFA and the Hawks stated that they would match any offer – which is what they did with the Memphis offer that Josh signed.

Strickland, if Ferry is serious about player development, then he hires a staff to develop players and he monitors their progress during practices. Here’s a question for you, if Jenkins wasn’t ready to contribute to Ferry’s overall goal of creating a winning culture from day 1 (above other players at his position and/or with his skill set), what would you have had LD do? Maybe work with him for the time needed to get him ready to contribute? And what if Ferry attends virtually every practice at home and has a trusted eye (Bob Weiss and/or Atkinson) who attends practices on the road to assess the progress of Jenkins (I’m excluding Scott because the number of late 2nd round picks who earn consistent playing time in their rookie year can likely be counted on a single hand for every two draft classes)?

The mistake I believe that you are making (which is made frequently around here) is that Ferry has the same access to the readiness of individual players and the way they are being developed as the most ardent fans. That is patently false. How many of us can walk into a practice? A drill session? Film study? How many of us can review practice film of the rookies? Or have access to a documented “improvement plan” that was likely created for Jenkins? How many of us know Jenkins’ strength and conditioning levels during pre-draft workouts vs. his current physical abilities after 4+ months with a professional trainer? How many of us know if he has mastered 25% of the playbook, or 50% or 100%? I suspect none of us, but I think that information is at Ferry’s fingertips (or an email away).

So I would NOT assume that Ferry is looking at minutes played on a game boxscore to evaluate LD’s player development abilities.

…pachulia has everyone fooled.only times he rebounds is when the ball comes directly to him…
—————————————————————————————————————————————–

And most importantly, he is fooling the Probability Theory. Dude, you could easily win a Nobel prize in Mathemathical Sciences for establishing the notion that Mr. Pachulia is somehow avoiding basic principles of Statistics and thus manages to have one of the highest rebounding rates on the team. great idea, but only little thing remains to be done, prove it ;-)

Particularly loaded with bull…

Trade Josh for Okafor and filler?

Josh us a top 20 player in this league.

He is at the heart of 75% of our runs with his defense. He is a human wrecking ball.

Does he wreck us as well with some of his mistakes? Heck yes, but we are sitting pretty in the standings with a make shift roster and you can all bet you @sses that you can thank Josh.

Josh is always there, ready for battle and playing pationately. He just needs a couple of nudges more in the right direction.
