Atlanta Hawks: Johnson doubtful vs. Cavs

Vivlamore reporting from Cleveland.

Just a couple of quick notes from this morning’s shootaround.

* Forward Ivan Johnson is doubtful for tonight’s game against the Cavaliers due to a stomach illness. Johnson made the trip to Cleveland but was unable to go to the arena for this morning’s practice. Coach Larry Drew said he doubted Johnson could play but would wait until game-time to make a final determination. Drew said the Hawks could really use Johnson against the Cavs. The Hawks are already without guard Devin Harris (sore left foot) who did not travel with the team.

* While being short-handed, Drew said he has yet to determine a starting lineup. That would include whether to keep Lou Williams in the lineup, as he has been for the past two victories. The Cavaliers ability to dribble penetrate, especially with Kyrie Irving back, will play a major part in the decision.

* Drew is also undecided on what game in this back-to-back to play swingman DeShawn Stevenson. He said the coaches were going to discuss whether it would be better to have Stevenson tonight against the Cavaliers or tomorrow against the Pacers.

* I will post a game thread blog later today. I have to go get me wife (of 21 years today) an anniversary gift.

“However, as I said before, this year’s Jamal only accentuates my feelings of the Jamal in the past given that he finally started to behave like a pro 12 years into his career.”

Once again dummy, he has had numerous years better than this one stats wise. At least make sense when you try to defend your warped logic.

And… the jury is still out. His shooting % is slooooowly deteriorating as the season progresses.

I haven’t watched any of the LAC games apart from their loss in ATL to evaluate if he has improved his effort on D (which would partially explain his ± stats).

Bottom Line is Crawford showed his value by actually winning a playoff series for us against Orlando. But that would have been as far as he can get you as a player. I think Lou Williams can do the same in a playoff 1st round series where you will meet teams with no SUPERSTARS ( ex Sixers, Bucks, Pacers) but that too is as far as he can get us with his scoring. In the End Will Hawks Management finally bring a Legit Star who can boss the officials , get 20+ points on any given night (Even a horrible shooting night) by getting 7 to 8 Free Throw Attempts per game and who would be surrounded by role players ( Josh, Al, Korver), a solid scorer ( Lou Williams) and an up and coming PG in JT. Until Then, frustration of knowing what is coming in June continues to set in

Brooklyn Nets’ Starting Five Salaries:

$19.7M (JJ) + $17.2M (DW) + $13.7M (BL) + $12.0M (KH) + $9.7M (GW) = 0.500 (14 -14) = mediocrity?

Just kidding but $72.3M for that starting five? What were (Owner) Prokhorov and the Nets thinking? I guess money is no issue if your net worth is (approximately) $13.2B.

FTPB,

Ken S,

I am a fan of Horford, and have defended him at times on here. And i am not expecting him to stop the penetration, or average 3 blocks per game. But while I agree that defense begins on the perimeter, I would like to see Al do a better job of contesting the penetration.

The pistons game was a prime example, where the pistons player would beat his guy in the perimeter, and get into the lane. And Horford seemed to make very little effort to contest the shot/make an effort to block it, or even foul the guard. It’s almost like he was willing to concede the layup.

How many times have we seen Josh try and block the guard’s shot, even if it results in a foul? And w have seen Josh try and take a charge. You hardly see that from Horford.

Maybe LD’s 2 foul rule has made him timid when it comes to picking up fouls like that, but I think he has the potential to be better defensively than what he has been this season.

Yes it’s well above average in the NBA, and it also got him a 10 million dollar per year guaranteed contract. Not sure what you definition of good is, but that sounds pretty good to me. LOL

Glad to know that I am not seeing things. I really though about it, and seriously I can not remember the last time Horford took a charge from a guard penetrating. Does not contest shots, and won’t step in there to take the charge. Sounds like defense 101 to me.

OB,

Maybe Horford is making a point by NOT picking up someone else’s foul when u have PG’s allowing these guys to just run into the lane. OR maybe that point could be towards Drew to GET THE BALL OUT OF the freakin guy’s hands WHO HAS CONSISTENTLY BROKEN DOWN THEIR DEFENDER TO COME INTO THE LANE IN THE 1ST PLACE!! Sam Mitchell from NBATV said the other day how come coaches dont trap guys anymore? I have to agree with that question. If the game is on the line and there is one guy in particular who has single-handed taking over the game, GET THE BALL OUT OF HIS HAND, would be the logical thing to do. And with my boy Horford being as intelligent as he is, I could really see him suggesting that but Drew, being the stubborn coach he is, saying “no”.

Horford doesnt have to mess up his sexy face to take a charge from anybody. No seriously, he may not be gifted in taking charges. And since he KNOWS thats not his strength, he is smart enough to not put himself in that situation just to..um…mess up his sexy face. Yeah, thats right. :)

Chris Broussard: I Just spoke with Jerry Sloan. He refused to comment on Nets or D-Will. All he would say is that he’s open to coaching in NBA again. Twitter @Chris_Broussard

Ding Ding Ding!! Coach Drew, u ARE on the hot seat. Jerry Sloan will be coming here next season. I see this team built in the eyes of Danny Ferry thru Jerry Sloan. I have campaigned for Coach Sloan since forever!!

MsDee

On Sirius Radio Friday, Dunleavy sounded like he was campaigning for it, starting with this quote. “I’m from Brooklyn. Coaching there would be a dream come true.” That’s not all. He also told Justin Termine, “Is the Nets job a premiere job in the league? I think it is now that they’re in Brooklyn.” NetsDaily

Dunleavy also likes the Nets roster. In talking about its versatility, he told Termine, they can play big and they have great guard play. And what’s the first thing the new coach will have to do, “The first thing you have to do as a coach is get (Deron) shots in his comfort zone.” NetsDaily

Looks like Dunleavy wants that coaching job bad!!

I would consider/describe the Nets’ starting five (players) as solid/good to very good players but most, if not all, of that starting five are (substantially) “overrated” and, as a result (unfortunately for the Nets), equate(s) to (those players) being “overpriced.”

“Drew said the Hawks could really use Johnson against the Cavs.”

Once Coach Drew finally realizes that the Hawks could really use Ivan on a nightly basis, I think the team will become better than they are now. When Horford decides that he does not want to contest layups, or take charges, and when Josh starts thinking he is Larry Bird reincarnated, pull them and insert Ivan.
