Vivlamore reporting.
Larry Drew didn’t like the way Jeff Teague was playing. So the Hawks coach let his point guard know about it.
During halftime of last week’s lopsided loss at the 76ers, Drew pulled Teague aside to hammer home the message that he needed more energy from the position. The following night, Teague set the tone early in a lopsided win over the Bulls. Next, Teague scored nine points in double overtime en route to a Hawks victory Wednesday over the Pistons that came after a blown 22-point fourth-quarter lead.
“When he’s not bringing the energy, it’s my job to let him know,” Drew said. “I told him he was not bringing energy. For whatever reason, it was not there and he needed to bring it. He didn’t have a good night that night but he came back the following night against Chicago and I thought he played much, much better.
“It all starts with him. … That point guard position is a very high energized position. I’ve made him aware of it and I’ll continue to make him aware of it. I need energy from that spot. When he brings it, he makes us an effective ball club.”
The Hawks (17-9) will need similar energy from Teague in Friday’s game at the Cavaliers (7-23). It was the Cavaliers who erased a nine-point fourth-quarter lead in a 113-111 victory over the Hawks on Nov. 30 at Philips Arena. The winning points came on Alonzo Gee’s put-back with four-tenths of a second remaining.
In snapping the Hawks’ six-game win streak, the Cavaliers played without point guard Kylie Irving, out with a broken finger. He’s back now. Irving figures to give the Hawks more fits with his ability to dribble penetrate, an issue for the Hawks in the first meeting even without the start guard.
“Easier said than done,” Teague said of the task of slowing Irving. “He’s really talented. He can make shots. He can do a lot with the basketball. Try to go out there, keep a lot of bodies in his face, make him see a wall of defenders in transition and try to go at him at the offensive end.”
Teague had five points and three assists in the loss to the 76ers. He came back with 11 points and eight assists against the Bulls and a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists against the Pistons.
“I’ve tried to make a conscious effort to come out with a lot of energy and push the basketball and playing a more up-tempo style,” Teague said of the past two games. “I think that gets everybody going.”
The Hawks insist they don’t view Friday’s game with a revenge factor. Although the Cavaliers snapped a win streak, the Hawks escaped with a couple of victories in the run. They included a last-second victory over the Wizards and a three-point win over the Bobcats.
“It’s just about getting a win,” center Al Horford said. “Obviously, we dodged some bullets here at home from some other teams. We kind of felt we were living on the edge a little bit and one was going to catch up with us. Cleveland got us that night. It’s about us going up there and getting a win.”
Practice update: Guard Devin Harris will miss his fifth straight game with a sore left foot as he did not travel with the Hawks to Cleveland. Harris was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice.
Josh Smith remains eighth among Eastern Conference frontcourt players in NBA All-Star fan balloting released by the league Thursday. Smith has 111,260 votes. He is behind Joakim Noah (129,331) and ahead of Anderson Varejao (99,955).

1ST OVERTIME
- 4:16 . . Lou drives all the way to the baseline, drawing 2 people, so he passes it out to Josh, who is camped out by the 3 point line. With 15 seconds still on the shot clock, and a man coming out at him, he shoots the rainbow 3 . . . airball. Just a horrific shot from Josh at that point in the game.
- 2:00 . . . Horford passes it to Josh in the post, and the Hawks let him go to work. He shoots a quick left hand hook over Charlie V, but he misses. Not the best shot in the world, but better than a contested 3.
- 0:03 . . . Only time to pretty much do one move and shoot. Although Lou pops out toward the inbounder, the pass goes to Josh down on the block vs Charlie V. He does a probe dribble into the lane, but every other Piston stays on their man. Josh’s shoot a fadeaway in the lane that hits the front rim. We go to another OT.
2ND OVERTIME
- 4:45 . . . Lou and Josh run a pick and roll on the right side. Lou is too far out and is doubled at the 3 point line, so he passes to an open Josh along the baseline. Monroe or Drummond rotate over to Josh, who takes 2 dribbles toward the basket. When the Piston bumps into Josh and falls down, Josh shoots an open 14 foot jumper . . . airball again. Josh holds his hands out by his side like . . “why didn’t you call that foul ref?”
- 2:23 . . . With the Hawks up 3, Josh gets the ball at the top of the key. Lou comes off of a Horford pick and Josh tosses an alley-oop to Lou. Needless to say, that play didn’t work. Lou couldn’t control the pass, and it goes out of bounds.
*******************
Too bad for Josh. Overall, he had a great game. But those final 20 or so minutes that he played was less to be desired. I’m just glad that we didn’t lose.

LD really has a problem with Teague, Ivan and it seems Morrow is added to that list. No matter how well they play they either can’t get regular minutes, or they need to play with more energy. No statements about Josh jacking up 3’s at the wrong time, Horford letting guards come into the paint at will or Lou Williams taking any shot he wants to. LD is a funny guy.

I dont mind a coach calling out his players, but be EQUAL!. Teague is the young guy of the group, so Drew isnt scared to call him out. Smoove doesnt get called out, Al doesnt get called out, neither does Lou. But Teague gets called out, and taken out of the game Way too much.

Slim, you are on it sir! I guarantee you LD would throw LD in on a trade to move him. I don’t think he will ever give JT the confidence to run his team. So much for LD never calling his players out for all to see.
Jamaal, Ivan has plenty of talent and is used in small spurts. Wonder why LD keeps him glued to the bench despite what Josh does? To me, LD learned nothing about how well we can play without Al….
You think we struggle with 9-23 Cleveland? I do.

Its funny to think the Hawks can’t beat Clev when Irving was injured but now Varejao is injured and with him gone I think we will beat Clev by 10+ pts. Varejao completley destroyed us last game with 20pts 18rbs(7offensively) so with him out all clev has now is zeller but he is not someone that I worry about, Clev will be small and all we have to do now is not let them get clean looks from 3, and try to contain Irving.
Bynum/Villaneuva/Daye-52 pts combined 10-18 from 3 last night
Bynum-6.6ppg Villanueva-7.8ppg Daye-3.6ppg=18ppg
Basically all that happened last night besides the hawks losing their energy after the big lead was, bynum/vill/daye starting jacking 3’s as they had nothing to lose and they just hit em last night. Those three will not combine for over 50 again this year, fluke game by DET.

Also all of you fellas are correct, LD is scared of Josh,

The fact remains, what he said is accurate.
Teaguer is inconsistent, lacks confidence,
and most of all does not play defense up to his capabilities !

Cousins gives you 16.6/9.5 in 30 minutes with a FT% of 76%. We don’t have 2 guys shooting under 60% FT and they are 1st and 3rd in getting to the line for us. That will hurt us going forward in close games.

Ok Teague has flaws. But tell me what are Horford’s flaws? What are Smoove’s flaws?
Teague is still learning the game because Woody and LD refused to play him early in his career. Each year as a starter Teague has improved his game but LD refuses to give the man props. Plus Teague stays healthy which Hinrich or Devin Harris could not do.
When we traded for Hinrich LD never called him out. His play was horrible but we never saw LD go on a rant in the paper on how he needs to do this and that.
LD shows favortism and he needs to stop.

Jeff Teague, Johan Petro & Houston’s pick to Toronto for Kyle Lowry, Quincy Acy (spelling???) & a 2nd rd pick.
Lowry will have to play his way back in to the starting lineup for Toronto since the team has improved with Calderon as the starting PG while Lowry was injured. Teague, as a restricted free agent, gives Toronto the option of extending him a long-term contract, vs. Lowry, who is an unrestricted free agent after next year.
Lowry would bring a steady, veteran presence to the Hawks backcourt. Lowry’s 2013/14 salary is just over $6M.

LD has called Josh out many times. He has also taken him out of the game. He should do it more often, but he has done it. I have never once heard him say one bad thing about Horford. Not one thing. We played this level of ball without Al last year. We can duplicate it once he’s dealt. He’s not Tim Duncan like I envisioned him having to be for us when we drafted him.
But our problem will be deciding what Josh and his personality is worth.
Perhaps Danny can pull another ‘miracle’ out of his cell phone.

Lowry – 15.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.6 spg, 2.6 tpg, 40% fgs, 34% from 3 (4.6 attempts per game)
Difference is that Lowry is a consistent rebounder and defender, plus he’s a proven 3-pt shooter attempting over 4.5 per game in each of the last 3 years. Not a major upgrade over Teague, but he brings more consistency, and he can go off for a 30+ pt game on occasion. Teague, hasn’t scored more than 20 pts all year.

Teague averages over 31 minutes a game. In 26 games, he’s hit 20 points once. Not more than 20, just 20. That’s just being timid and deferring to your teammates. And at only 6 assists per game, please don’t try to sell me that he’s a “pass first” point guard.

My buzz word for Teague isn’t “energy”, it’s “aggressive”. Dude is too passive, soft spoken, timid, etc… Hawks had to hire a coach just to hopefully bring out his “inner dog”. I like the kid, but if he’s going to lead this team for the next 5 or 6 years, he needs to find that inner dog, and start being more aggressive.

Bad Josh cant finish, schedule unkind…
It was painful watching the Hawks’ last 5 min…
That used to be JJ’s time, his attribute…he could finish…
Hawks now spread love around, so far so good…
Yet, schedule has been kind…not much longer…
Lenny Wilkens says beat all below .500 teams…
Split with above .500 and see what happens in playoffs…
Hawks on pace, yet below .500 teams running out…
Trampled by Warriors, Thunder, Heat…
Struggled with Wizards, Pistons…
Forecast: Cloudy and overcast…
Good Josh, Bad Josh – never so illustrative…
Brilliant for 3Q, painful down the stretch…
My biggest issue with the JJ trade…
Who would rise to the occassion?
Lots of 3.5Q players…
NYK v LAL – Gasol didnt have great 3Q but…
Down stretch, he rose to occasion…
7fter that scores easily in the post…
Exactly where we struggle…
Hawks at cross-roads?
Spend $14-$15M for decency?
Or $19M and a chance at a chip?

From a Coaches POV
Having observed for many moons I`ve arrived at the following
conclusions at this point in time.
1st, we have an exceptional team.
Our team is most likely to win a Championship
but not out of the realm of possibility.
2nd, were I coaching, this would be my approach:
I have always liked a two guard system and have had success.
The 86 Celtics were *(opinion) the Geatest Team Ever;
The [original] Dream Team notwithstanding.
The 86 Celts had DJ and Ainge yet neither or both were the pg.
In other words they could / would interchange fluidly.
-NOW-
With Teaguer & Lou that could work when they are on the ct together.
However, my starting line-up would be:
[1] Teaguer / Lou – my starter would be the better defender
[2] KKorv
[3] Josh
[4] Al
[5] Zaza
Ivan would be my primary back-up Big
DSteve would be my def stopper off the bench
Morrow would be a regular as would JJenkins
As for improving the team for the future;
I trust DFerry !
-HOWEVER-
As a fan, I`ve looked at potential trade partners and FAs.
Nothing makes much sense as far as a trade.
We would only be trading our headaches, heartburn, and frustration
-for-
someone else`s antiques or garage clutter.
The really good young players have recently been signed
or, they are *untouchable. *[prime]
The Very Best Hope is DFerry will convince CPaul
to come Back to the South.
I`m talking about a real SuperDuperStar / GameChanger ! CP3.
In the meanwhile;
I`m not the Coach, LD is doing a respectable job.
Although, I still believe he Will-Not be back Next Season.
DFerry gets his man.
The Future is bright – and yes – there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Nets management fired Avery Johnson. I look at how the Nets are playing; they looked worst than the Hawks did last year and the year before. Oh, that right-they got “iso Joe”. The Hawks did good to rid themselves of “trotter” Marvin and slow iso-Joe. Joe Johnson is on display for all the world to see-that he is the most grossly overpaid player and the Hawks were impressively dumb for making that trade in the first place. When Steve Nash and Joe Johnson was in Pheonix-it was Nash who was the real ballah that made Joe looked good. Why the Hawks didn’t see that back then-amazes me. They also had Armarie Stoudamire. I don’t like what the Nets did to Avery, but he had to take the fall for the underachieving Brooklyn Nets.

yall are blind if you cant realize teague is one of the main reasons our team is as good as it is. he keeps the offense going, looks to pass, penetrates, and creates. plain and simple. you are idiots who are saying he should be replaced. Hes a top 15 pg in the league and can only get better. Once he learns how to shoot off the dribble and gains some confidence in his shot he will be an all-star. Athletically, he is one notch below westbrook/rose and belongs in the same category as bledsoe/irving. The team collapses when hes out of the game, and his durability spoils yall as yall neglect to realize how bad our team would be without him.

Al does seem less agressive after his pec injury, his shot is off, too. Josh, terrible shooter, hustles 10% of the time, most talented. Teague is just passive, plays good with a chip on his shoulder, maybe he’ll get that eye of the tiger. I liked Grandad’s lineup, we got to get ZaZa and Ivan in there banging, boxing out, defending/hustling. We are just soft in the paint, it parts like the Red Sea. We got cap room to add a big name next yr or maybe DF makes a trade beforehand plus a big name next yr. Still 17-9 and no JJ contract, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Coach Mike Brown was fired after going 1 – 4 (0.200) with the Lakers during this 2012 – 2013 regular season. Last season, Coach Mike Brown and the Lakers finished the 2011 -2012 regular season with a record of 41 – 26 (0.621).
Coach Avery Johnson was fired after going 14 – 14 (0.500) with the Nets during this 2012 – 2013 regular season.
Coach Mike D’Antoni is currently 9 – 10 (0.474) with the Lakers during this 2012 – 2013 regular season. How long of a “leash” will the Lakers give Coach (Mike) D’Antoni?

CP3 is not coming to Atlanta. Too much of a sure thing in Clippers with almost a complete team. Why would he leave that and the LA market and its visibility for uncertainty of Hawks? How many times are Clippers on TV this year? How many times are Hawks on TV this year?
I like Teague, I think he has room for growth. He won’t be K. Irving or Rondo, but his vision will improve with time. I want him to throw better lobs to Al and Josh in near term.
Larry Drew is on a one year contract. What incentive does he have to develop Jenkins if he is not here past end of the year? If you want to see rookies develop, then Danny Ferry needs to either extend Drew or hire a coach with a 3-4 years contract. Larry Drew has been kept on a short leash ever since here(Blame Rick Sund and ASG). No way he can develop Teague and Jenkins and others, if he has no certainty for his own future next year.

Watched the game on DVR and I have a different take on it. LD sees Teague as a crutch. Teague is his coach in the floor. In that final overtime whever Lou would get the ball on a defensive rebound he would direct him to give the ball to Teague (LD seemed more relaxed after the ball was in Teague’s hands). He even let Teague call his own plays; At one point, Teague pointed at Lou basically saying “we’re running this play for you” and Lou hits a dagger jumper.
I agree with LD, Teague has a high ceiling. As a PG he has to defer a lot but anyone who saw Teague play in HS or college can tell you that naturally he is an offensive pitbull when it comes to attacking the rim. He will figure out the proper balance eventually.

Hi-Sider:
As I looked over the complete list of coaches in the NBA;
I surmised 9 coaches are on some sort of hot seat,
some warmer than others.
Of the Nine there were five white guys and four black guys;
if that is of some concern to you.
The list below omits coaches who have vitually no chance of being fired
or Brooklyn who is in a state of flux
Also I included LD, wdsn, D`Antoni, plus Carlisle
to whom you had referenced.
____________________________________________
Larry Drew – we all have a shared opinion
Mike Dunlap – rookie coach with a shorter leash than most [Mike]
Byron Scott – on the hot seat
Rick Carlisle – NBA Champs one yr removed / Dirk inj
Lawrence Frank – on his way out !
Kevin McHale – family tragedy will buy time plus their winning
Frank Vogel – they didn`t really like him when they hired him
Vinny Del Negro – Gone if they are not in the Finals
Mike D’Antoni – will finish the season / Kobe & Nash will decide his fate
Scott Skiles – hot seat
Rick Adelman – If they don`t want him we`ll take `im
Monty Williams – hasn`t had enuff time
Mike Woodson – solid for now
Jacque Vaughn – see Monty Williams
Doug Collins – *Bynum`s inj; not his fault
Alvin Gentry – ten u o u s at best
Terry Stotts – will be gone sooner than later
Keith Smart – the next to go; not his fault Cousins is Nuts
Dwane Casey – in a race with keith Smart
Tyrone Corbin – the most difficult to gauge
Randy Wittman – will be gone soon

JJ – Parker also only averaged 5.5 assists per game at age 24, 1.1 steals compared to Jeff’s 1.6, and Jeff has a better assist/turnover ratio, which tyger seems to think indicates a better PG.
Compare the stats. Teague is as good or better than Felton, Conley, and Lin. He’s in their class

Just Joe,
I want Teague to put up Tony Parker stats. 18 PPG on 50% shooting. 4-5 trips to the line per game. Parker was doing it when he was 23-24..
Tony Parker’s average his first 4 years in the league (by the way, he was a starter from day one).
Year 1: 9 pts, 3 assists in 29 mpg
Year 2: 16 and 5 in 32 mpg
Year 3: 15 and 6 in 34 mpg
Year 4: 17 and 6 in 34 mpg
Year 5: 19 and 6 in 34 mpg.
So Parker did not average 18+ ppg until his 5th year as a starter (even if he was only 24). But you expect Teague to put up those numbers in year 2 as a starter? Not to mention the fact that Parker plays for one of the best coaches and best organizations in the NBA. Shouldn’t that count for something too?
Teague is in his second year starting and averaging 13 and 7 in 31 mpg. So he is already averaging more assists than Tony Parker did in their respective year 2 as starters (despite Parker having better talent to pass to). Give Teague some time.

as an example, people would like you to believe otherwise because it keeps good people on separate sides of the fence. it is like the deaths in conn. it has nothing to do with gun legislation but mental health. he could have done more damage with a self made bomb, he found on the internet, or driven cars into a group of kids. the next day a guy wanted to set his neighborhood on fire. legislate matches for sure then.
government doesnt want to take on mental health, costs too much as in green. so they allow all of us to split up into groups and miss the point that mental health is a huge issue that gets swept under the table. it is an issue that affects blacks, whites and yellows, reds, in betweens, in every facet of life. government wants you to be angry because it keeps you from really understanding the issues. god forbid that folks come to love one another and get together, to do the right things. catch my drift here?
so, just keep on trying to do everything you can to keep people hating and separate and feed right into their hands, ok? stir it up good. be proud.

Slimjr,
You’ll have to give up more than AL more than likely..Don’t know if AL has as much value to GM’s through out the league as we believe on this blog?.
So you’re telling me…that the Kings would want more than Al in a trade for Cousins? Surely you are not talking about DeMarcus Cousins. Because the Cousins I know has been in the news for all the wrong reasons;
Some of his news clippings (I wont include the date or link, but if you google it, you will find it);
On Wednesday afternoon, the NBA announced that it had suspended Sacramento King big man DeMarcus Cousins for one game for striking Dallas Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo in the groin..
Accidents happen right? Some more Cousins news;
Cousins was suspended two games for confronting and instigating an “animated conversation” with San Antonio Spurs TV commentator (and former player) Sean Elliott..
Still think Kings wouldn’t take Horford for him?
Cousins got into a war of words with head coach Keith Smart as the Kings were taking on the Los Angeles Clippers. Cousins was benched and subsequently hit with an indefinite suspension..
And by the way, Cousins had a feud with the previous Kings coach (Paul Westphal), and got him fired. And you don’t think the Kings would love to get Horford for him?
Is Cousins more talented? Sure. But he has a career 16 and 10 average, on a losing team. Isn’t it easier to get numbers on a losing team?
And BTW, Al’s career average is 13 and 10, so not far behind, despite Al being a 3rd/4th option for most of his career…on a winning team no less.
Please take your GM cap off

I have no issues with LD caling out Teague, because he is right. Teague is too passive at times, and lacks energy, especially against the no name PGs.
I just wish LD would be more consistent and call out other players as well. For example, against the Pistons, I wonder if after the 4th quarter (and before the OT period started), did he pull Josh to the side to talk to him about his 4th quarter shot selection? Did he talk to Al about not contesting shots in the paint?
Be consistent LD.

Our undoing in the playoffs will be the lack of a rebounding and defending SF. There’s just too much pressure on Josh and AL to outrebound other teams frontline. Also, 2(Zaza/Ivan)of our top 4 rebounders(Josh/AL/Zaza/Ivan) come off the bench.
And for some stupid reason Drew won’t give Ivan consistent mins, no matter how well he plays.
ROD FROM CP AND AL OTHER HORFORD HATERS-Where do you get this absolutely stupid idea that it’s Horford’s responsibility to stop all of these guards and SFs from getting into the lane?
How much intelligence and/or common sense does it require for you to start placing the blame on the guards and SFs that are assigned to defend them? On one hand you clowns want Horford to keep them out of the lane. Then you want him to defend the rim when they get into the lane. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.

Demarcus Cousins is everything we want Al to be minus the craziness.
He has guard-like handles on the perimeter something Al will never develop, every now and then he tries but he just can’t get past his defender without fear of getting picked. Cousins has a sweet post-up game and uses his 280 lb frame to bully usually smaller players. He has a beautiful mid-range jumper, that if given more work could become absolutely deadly on his part. Defensively he has a ways to go, but he blocks shots at around what Al does, and draws a lot of charges something I don’t think Al has ever done in his career.
People complain about his FG% but look at his team, I mean seriously glance over the Kings roster, he has to create offense for himself in that selfish system which is a major proponent of his low FG%.
It’s a shame the guy is bat sh*t crazy, because if you put his skill set minus the headaches in the same positions Al is given on this team he could easily get 25 and 13 nightly, and I mean easy.

I am not a Horford hater, I call it like I see it. On every team, I’ve ever played on the center is always the last line of defense. Regardless of what the guards do, you as a center must protect the rim. Teams never attack Josh at the rim, they always go at Horford. I wonder why? Allowing point guards to go right at you with no resistance is not good defense on any level.

“Also, Lin’s jersey was number 2 in sales in NBA. Does sale of merchandise and associated increase in revenue for that club justify higher pay? Do you think Conley’s jersey ever is number 2 in sales?
How about higher ticket revenue as result of new demographics being attracted to the game? The increase in sales of tickets, can justify a more lucrative contract for a team. Do you think Conley = increased ticket sales in Memphis or NBA?
How about TV exposure? Do you think Conley gets Memphis on TV on Christmas day? While Hardin is by far the star of that team, Lin’s story, is a critical sub-plot to their popularity on a national level.”
This is all very true. I totally agree that Lin brings value off the court that Conley (and 99% of other players) do not bring, and all of my previous statements were related only to on court performance. But that brings me to this:
“this goes back to when i said players were trashing lin unneedlessly and it struck of reasons other than lin’s basketball talents. i was surprised at two players in particular being so out spoken. i have never heard one speak down to anyone’s contract as they did lin’s. it struck of petty jealousy or racist overtones and said do.”
If there is one thing I have completely disagreed with doc on it is this. Yes, Lin sells tons of jerseys and is a ticket sales draw, but this all has very little to do with his level of on-court production (or else other players who produce like him would have the same amount of impact off the court for their franchise). If he is being singled out or targeted by other players, it is because of hype, not his ethnicity, and Lin himself doesn’t seem to understand this. Yi Jianlian, Yuta Tabuse, Ha Seung-Jin, Wang Zhizhi and Mengke Bateer are wondering where all these supposedly racist NBA players were to target them and single them out.

Completely agree with SteveW’s 5:57 post. A point guard’s job, whether he is labeled “pass-first” or not, is to initiate the offense and get teammates involved. Teague is the 3rd scoring option on this team, and there are games where he is 4th (behind Lou). If he was on some .200 team like Kyrie Irving where he had free reign to do whatever he wanted with the ball, playing with a bunch of D-League caliber teammates, I have no doubts he could put up 20 a game (and so could many other PGs who don’t score much).
There are very few truly “pass-first” PGs in the league — even Chris Paul routinely looks for his own shot at least as much as he looks to set up his teammates — and many of the ones who acquire the “pass-first” label don’t necessarily set the world on fire when it comes to assist rate, turnover rate, etc. compared to their “shoot-first” peers.
Teague has had only 3 games with as many turnovers than assists this year. By comparison, Curry has 4, Lowry has 2 in only 15 games, Lawson has 3, Westbrook has 3, and Lin has 6. Teague has a better assist/turnover ratio than, among others, Holiday, Lowry, Jennings, Lin, Lillard, Conley, and Curry. Teague may not be Jason Kidd in his prime, and these stats only go so far in showing how well a player plays point guard, but for all the talk that he is supposedly not a “real” PG, he isn’t lagging behind his peers in any of the areas that usually indicate how well a PG is playing the position. The Hawks could do a lot worse than Teague at PG.

Teague has the potential to put up those numbers in my opinion, plus be an above avg defender.”
I agree that Teague’s ceiling is a more athletic Tony Parker. Keep in mind, though, that Parker was a starter at age 19 in his rookie year, whereas Teague didn’t start a game until he was nearly 23. Parker had a lot more experience at the same age. It may take Teague a little longer to reach that level.

I think Teague is capable of putting up All-Star caliber numbers but just doesnt have the mindset right now. This may have been damaged by Drew and Woody. Think about all the first quarters in his career where Jeff has went off for 10-12 points, only to finish the game with like 15 or 16. Just Joe,
Teague’s game is to handle the rock and attack attack attack.
That is how perceive to have been his game at the college level.
With the Hawks he was/is being asked to be a more traditional PG, in particular when he was lower in the pecking order with JJ, Jamal, Josh, Al, Bibby and even Marvin ahead of him.
The CHI series proved, IMO, what is Teague’s game and how he is effective (he had already shown that against CLE in the last game of his rookie season).
Given that player development and Hawks never seem to fit in the same sentence, it’s no wonder that Teague has had trouble finding the balance between his former self and what he needs to be.

Teague doesn’t have the personality that allows him to clash with the HC or his teammates, especially teammates(Bibby, JJ, Josh)that the HC is afraid to clash with. TParker has played with championship caliber players for his entire career.
He’s also played his entire career under a championship caliber HC who’s gone all out to support all of his players. Teague has played his entire career under 2 HCs who’ve never supported him and who went out of their way to keep him firmly anchored to the bench in favor of grossly underachieving vets who were actual liabilities.
If Teague played under a HC like POP, or got the support most quality PGs get from their HC, we’d silence all of these clowns who want him traded because they’re too stupid to realize he’s been the most productive PG we’ve had since the days of Mookie Blalock in his prime.
These clowns won’t rest until they see him traded for another version of MBibby, AJohnson, TLue, KHinrich etc. And now we have fans that have suddenly fallen in love with a total head case(DCousins), based on what they THINK OR BELIEVE he’ll accomplish when he’s not under suspension of course.
Can you imagine this tempermental man child teamed up with JSmith, who appears to be a milder version of him?

Vava…”Teague’s game is to handle the rock and attack attack attack.”
That’s all I want. Don’t try to make the young man in to Steve Nash. Teague should be averaging 4-6 free throw attempts per game (like Parker…like Lowry). Be aggressive, young man.

Many on here saying that the Nets were wrong in firing Avery Johnson. I have to disagree. I dont really think he was fired based ONLY on the record. I think he was fired because he lost control of his players. I mean, u have some who like Avery then u have some who felt like he wasnt calling the right plays at the right time (DWill). Instead of Avery sitting down after games or practices to see what works best with the players on his team, he just stayed consistent with what was obviously not working which got himself fired!! On NBATV, Jon Berry said both Joe and DWILL were avg well below their career numbers in FG%. THAT’S ON THE COACH!! And on top of that, THE PLAYERS HAVE NOW LOST RESPECT FOR YA. But I will say this, Brooklyn’s organization along with the pressure of JayZ boosting this team up b4 a single game was even played, definitely placed unnecessary pressure on Avery Johnson then need be. That could have happen to ANY COACH!! Case-in-point, Mike Brown of the Lakers. TOO MUCH PRESSURE B4 A SINGLE GAME WAS PLAYED!!

Ken, everything you’re saying about Teague’s personality, or his need to be supported by his coaching staff, just reinforces my concerns. Dude’s 24 yrs old now. This is his 4th year in the league. He’s a league-avg PG right now (yes, unfortunately that still makes him the best we’ve had since Mookie), and we have to make a decision on his future this summer.
Question: Based on what you’ve seen so far this year (10-20 pts per game, 5-10 assists, 1-2 steals, 1-2 rebounds, 2-3 turnovers), if New Orleans offers Teague a 4-yr $40M+ contract on day 1 of free agency, are you matching?

Without Jeff, the Hawks lose to the Pistons! Where is the accolade for that? Why blame Jeff for recent losses when the whole team is NOT rebounding the ball and, the Coach’s player rotations suck to high heavens?
Leave Jeff alone! And, STOP calling him out in the local rag-tag newspaper, fool!

6 to 7 million is more than enough to cover his current production.

I wonder if some of you guys are as thin-skinned and soft as you act when someone says anything critical of your favorite player. Do you cry in your pillow when your boss suggests that you need to do better? It seems highly unlikely that LD’s comments came AFTER the Pistons game… think of the timing people. Re-read the posts, the games mentioned were from last week.
Most head coaches are more likely to forgive physical mistakes rather than mental ones. Mike Bibby simply did not have the agility to defend quick PGs, but as long as he made the righ mental decisions (i.e., attempted to funnel his man into a help defender), he mostly went without criticiam. You can’t coach a player to be more physically able than he is. But things like effort, fighting through a screen, constantly pushing the tempo… all of those are MENTAL things. And a head coach should NEVER accept anything less than exceptional mental performance.
Seriously, is LD supposed to tell Horford to grow 2 inches? Is he supposed to tell Zaza to catch the ball better? Is he supposed to tell Korver to be stronger when he is playing post defense? Those are all physical limitations. You can’t fix those through coaching or ‘calling out a player for being too short, having bad hands or not being physically strong.
Speaking of Bibby, imagine if Bibby had allowed a back-up PG to go for 30+ against him. I kind of doubt we’d see the same out-pouring of support as found on this blog.

AJ,
I think you make valid points, but in the past, Horford was substantially more forceful in the post.
I think that breaking TJ Ford’s neck made him substantially less stern on D.
Defense, even in the post, is not only length and reach.
It’s also wanting to do everything, including hard fouls, to make your adversary wonder if they go full force may end up with them knocked down and hurting.

A salary of 7-8M per year is fair for Teague.
George Hill makes 8M per year.
Lin averages to 8M (approximately) per year.
Teague is equal level player to both George Hill and Lin.
Lawson and Holliday make around 11-12M per year.
Lawson last year and Holliday this year have performed better than Teague.

“Mr Napoleon is gone bye-bye. Before Avery was hired, many of us on this blog opined about the micro-managers that wear on peoples nerves.”
DrMaryb may be correct. There were rumors about Avery’s style back in his Dallas days. I wonder if his style may have grown tiresome with Nets veterans. Though certainly Nets seem to have unreal expectations of a team coming together quickly.
This is another reason why Larry Drew has elements of a good coach in NBA. His style works well with veteran players. Even when he has issues (disciplinary) with Ivan, T-Mac, Josh Powell in the past, or when he has benched Josh, we hear very little about what happened. Ability to work with veteran NBA players is something Avery may not have mastered.

vava, I only saw the last few minutes of the 4th quarter and thw 2 OTs. When Horford made a move to defend Bynum, the Pistons hit Drummond on alley-oops. When he stayed with Drummond, Bynum was able to get to the rim. In previous years, fans would have pointed to the ability of the opposing PG to get drible-penetration into the lane. But during the Pistons game, all fingers were pointing at Horford because he was unable to defend both the PG AND the athletic center (at the same time). I agree with all who said that Horford did a poor job of defending both Bynum AND Drumond. Of course, I would suggest that 9 of 10 centers wouldn’t be able to defend both of those guys and that maybe, just maybe, keeping the PG out of the lane wasn’t Horford’s responsibility.
To your other point, yes, Horford doesn’t bang as much as he used to but he is a much better player than when he was 2-3 years ago. This season has only confirmed what I have said ad nauseum, if Josh, Al (or Joe Johnson) are your best players, then your ceiling is the 2nd round. Watching Josh and Al get more touches has not changed my opinion.

Drew puts so much pressure on Horford with his 2 foul rule that Horford just plays alittle too careful when it comes to fouling players hard in the lane, esp when the PG’s are allowing them to just run free in the lane. Horford still has his man to look out for underneath the basket.

” I am not a Horford hater, I call it like I see it. On every team, I’ve ever played on the center is always the last line of defense. Regardless of what the guards do, you as a center must protect the rim. Teams never attack Josh at the rim, they always go at Horford. I wonder why? Allowing point guards to go right at you with no resistance is not good defense on any level.”

I am not a Jamal hater, I simply don’t live inside his jock like you do, looking at his underachieving career with Babie’s rosy glasses that turn everything sooo wonderful.
Jamal this year is on fire, top 5 material in the season and it will be huge injustice if he is not invited to the All-Star game by the coaches.
However, as I said before, this year’s Jamal only accentuates my feelings of the Jamal in the past given that he finally started to behave like a pro 12 years into his career.

Vava74, speaking to Jamal’s time in Atlanta, as that is only period when I followed him closely, I wouldn’t call him an under-achiever. If anything, he was a difference maker, and one that both fans and teammates praised, and was officially recognized by him winning sixth man of the year award.
Sometimes, how you perform based on your record, is a direct function of the team(s) (weak teams) you play on.

AJ,
Not commenting on the Pistons’ game, which I did not watch more than the condense version of the NBA league pass and from which I will not draw conclusions.
My feelings towards Al’s diminished physicality relate to a period of more or less 2 years. IMO, this has affected how opponent see the Hawks’ painted area.
MsDee has a point as well since LD is completely orthodox about his 2 foul rule which almost invariably ends up with the player that reaches that point sitting on the bench for crucial periods and that certainly changes how they approach D.
I rather have my best men working during a consistent period and build a lead that allows to sit them further down the road than preserving them at the cost of being less competitive during what many times is a crucial moment in the game.
Also, did Al ever foul out?

Teacher: Hi Students, your assignment for the day is attached below. You have 2 minutes to answer. Begin.
Question: What do the Hawks Management have to do to make this team a contender?
Top Answer: They need to get a list of the top 7 FT Attempts players per game. Once that list is retrieved, they need to put those 7 names in a box and have Bob Rathbun randomly pick one name from it. Then they need to throw all the cash they have on that player, dont worry they will make back that investment in no time once philips will sell out evrey night and from jersey sales.
Teacher: Wow student, you should be proud of that answer. 98 Percentile. Good Job. Lets have s..x

Jamal had a very good first season and an average second season, partly due to LD playing him at the PG slot.
However, it’s always underachieving since his offensive talent is over the moon and he could have been much better than he has been until now.
Jamal’s shot selection (prior to this year) has been consistently worse than Josh’s however people seem to be more into Josh’s than into Jamal because even the horrible shots that Jamal take “look nice” whilst Josh’s airballs are nasty to look at.
However, the end result the same. Jamal has always played like a show-boater, almost autistic, not particularly interested in his team-mates or with an eschewed perception of what he could or not do to help his team win games.
And on defense, I have never seen such a disinterested player.
