Atlanta Hawks: Drew makes it clear that Teague needs to play with energy (updated)

Vivlamore reporting.

Larry Drew didn’t like the way Jeff Teague was playing. So the Hawks coach let his point guard know about it.

During halftime of last week’s lopsided loss at the 76ers, Drew pulled Teague aside to hammer home the message that he needed more energy from the position. The following night, Teague set the tone early in a lopsided win over the Bulls. Next, Teague scored nine points in double overtime en route to a Hawks victory Wednesday over the Pistons that came after a blown 22-point fourth-quarter lead.

“When he’s not bringing the energy, it’s my job to let him know,” Drew said. “I told him he was not bringing energy. For whatever reason, it was not there and he needed to bring it. He didn’t have a good night that night but he came back the following night against Chicago and I thought he played much, much better.

“It all starts with him. … That point guard position is a very high energized position. I’ve made him aware of it and I’ll continue to make him aware of it. I need energy from that spot. When he brings it, he makes us an effective ball club.”

The Hawks (17-9) will need similar energy from Teague in Friday’s game at the Cavaliers (7-23). It was the Cavaliers who erased a nine-point fourth-quarter lead in a 113-111 victory over the Hawks on Nov. 30 at Philips Arena. The winning points came on Alonzo Gee’s put-back with four-tenths of a second remaining.

In snapping the Hawks’ six-game win streak, the Cavaliers played without point guard Kylie Irving, out with a broken finger. He’s back now. Irving figures to give the Hawks more fits with his ability to dribble penetrate, an issue for the Hawks in the first meeting even without the start guard.

“Easier said than done,” Teague said of the task of slowing Irving. “He’s really talented. He can make shots. He can do a lot with the basketball. Try to go out there, keep a lot of bodies in his face, make him see a wall of defenders in transition and try to go at him at the offensive end.”

Teague had five points and three assists in the loss to the 76ers. He came back with 11 points and eight assists against the Bulls and a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists against the Pistons.

“I’ve tried to make a conscious effort to come out with a lot of energy and push the basketball and playing a more up-tempo style,” Teague said of the past two games. “I think that gets everybody going.”

The Hawks insist they don’t view Friday’s game with a revenge factor. Although the Cavaliers snapped a win streak, the Hawks escaped with a couple of victories in the run. They included a last-second victory over the Wizards and a three-point win over the Bobcats.

“It’s just about getting a win,” center Al Horford said. “Obviously, we dodged some bullets here at home from some other teams. We kind of felt we were living on the edge a little bit and one was going to catch up with us. Cleveland got us that night. It’s about us going up there and getting a win.”

Practice update: Guard Devin Harris will miss his fifth straight game with a sore left foot as he did not travel with the Hawks to Cleveland. Harris was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice.

Josh Smith remains eighth among Eastern Conference frontcourt players in NBA All-Star fan balloting released by the league Thursday. Smith has 111,260 votes. He is behind Joakim Noah (129,331) and ahead of Anderson Varejao (99,955).

LOL . . he is always calling out Teague.

1ST OVERTIME

- 4:16 . . Lou drives all the way to the baseline, drawing 2 people, so he passes it out to Josh, who is camped out by the 3 point line. With 15 seconds still on the shot clock, and a man coming out at him, he shoots the rainbow 3 . . . airball. Just a horrific shot from Josh at that point in the game.

- 2:00 . . . Horford passes it to Josh in the post, and the Hawks let him go to work. He shoots a quick left hand hook over Charlie V, but he misses. Not the best shot in the world, but better than a contested 3.

- 0:03 . . . Only time to pretty much do one move and shoot. Although Lou pops out toward the inbounder, the pass goes to Josh down on the block vs Charlie V. He does a probe dribble into the lane, but every other Piston stays on their man. Josh’s shoot a fadeaway in the lane that hits the front rim. We go to another OT.

2ND OVERTIME

- 4:45 . . . Lou and Josh run a pick and roll on the right side. Lou is too far out and is doubled at the 3 point line, so he passes to an open Josh along the baseline. Monroe or Drummond rotate over to Josh, who takes 2 dribbles toward the basket. When the Piston bumps into Josh and falls down, Josh shoots an open 14 foot jumper . . . airball again. Josh holds his hands out by his side like . . “why didn’t you call that foul ref?”

- 2:23 . . . With the Hawks up 3, Josh gets the ball at the top of the key. Lou comes off of a Horford pick and Josh tosses an alley-oop to Lou. Needless to say, that play didn’t work. Lou couldn’t control the pass, and it goes out of bounds.

*******************

Too bad for Josh. Overall, he had a great game. But those final 20 or so minutes that he played was less to be desired. I’m just glad that we didn’t lose.

It’s always about “Energy” with Drew. Maybe the Hawks need to make some uniforms out of solar panels, so that the Hawks will never run out of energy.

LD really has a problem with Teague, Ivan and it seems Morrow is added to that list. No matter how well they play they either can’t get regular minutes, or they need to play with more energy. No statements about Josh jacking up 3’s at the wrong time, Horford letting guards come into the paint at will or Lou Williams taking any shot he wants to. LD is a funny guy.

You’ll have to give up more than AL more than likely..Don’t know if AL has as much value to GM’s through out the league as we believe on this blog?

I dont mind a coach calling out his players, but be EQUAL!. Teague is the young guy of the group, so Drew isnt scared to call him out. Smoove doesnt get called out, Al doesnt get called out, neither does Lou. But Teague gets called out, and taken out of the game Way too much.

The reason Teague gets pulled so often and not josh or AL is because there are other options on the bench capable of producing at PG.

Not so much at Center & PF.

Slim, you are on it sir! I guarantee you LD would throw LD in on a trade to move him. I don’t think he will ever give JT the confidence to run his team. So much for LD never calling his players out for all to see.

Jamaal, Ivan has plenty of talent and is used in small spurts. Wonder why LD keeps him glued to the bench despite what Josh does? To me, LD learned nothing about how well we can play without Al….

You think we struggle with 9-23 Cleveland? I do.

Despite the Avery firing, I still believe he was a better choice than LD.

Its funny to think the Hawks can’t beat Clev when Irving was injured but now Varejao is injured and with him gone I think we will beat Clev by 10+ pts. Varejao completley destroyed us last game with 20pts 18rbs(7offensively) so with him out all clev has now is zeller but he is not someone that I worry about, Clev will be small and all we have to do now is not let them get clean looks from 3, and try to contain Irving.

Bynum/Villaneuva/Daye-52 pts combined 10-18 from 3 last night
Bynum-6.6ppg Villanueva-7.8ppg Daye-3.6ppg=18ppg

Basically all that happened last night besides the hawks losing their energy after the big lead was, bynum/vill/daye starting jacking 3’s as they had nothing to lose and they just hit em last night. Those three will not combine for over 50 again this year, fluke game by DET.

I am not defending LD;
and I do not believe in “handling” players [player issues]
through the media.
Also all of you fellas are correct, LD is scared of Josh,
or whatever ………………& refuses to coach Josh hard.
-BUT-
The fact remains, what he said is accurate.

Teaguer is inconsistent, lacks confidence,
and most of all does not play defense up to his capabilities !

And with those comments, G-Dad, he can be included in any deal that brings a potential star to this city.

Cousins gives you 16.6/9.5 in 30 minutes with a FT% of 76%. We don’t have 2 guys shooting under 60% FT and they are 1st and 3rd in getting to the line for us. That will hurt us going forward in close games.

Ok Teague has flaws. But tell me what are Horford’s flaws? What are Smoove’s flaws?

Teague is still learning the game because Woody and LD refused to play him early in his career. Each year as a starter Teague has improved his game but LD refuses to give the man props. Plus Teague stays healthy which Hinrich or Devin Harris could not do.

When we traded for Hinrich LD never called him out. His play was horrible but we never saw LD go on a rant in the paper on how he needs to do this and that.

LD shows favortism and he needs to stop.

Jeff Teague, Johan Petro & Houston’s pick to Toronto for Kyle Lowry, Quincy Acy (spelling???) & a 2nd rd pick.

Lowry will have to play his way back in to the starting lineup for Toronto since the team has improved with Calderon as the starting PG while Lowry was injured. Teague, as a restricted free agent, gives Toronto the option of extending him a long-term contract, vs. Lowry, who is an unrestricted free agent after next year.

Lowry would bring a steady, veteran presence to the Hawks backcourt. Lowry’s 2013/14 salary is just over $6M.

Just Joe Lowry can’t stay healthy. That was the problem with Hinrich. We traded JC2 and a first rounder to get him them he broke down in the playoffs. Even this year Devin Harris was suppose to challenge Teague for the starting position but he can’t stay healthy.

LD has called Josh out many times. He has also taken him out of the game. He should do it more often, but he has done it. I have never once heard him say one bad thing about Horford. Not one thing. Never called him out for missing clutch free throws, never called him out for lack of energy, never called him out for allowing guards to come in the paint at will. Never heard him call out Marvin either. I truly don’t understand it.

Im curious slim jr?
if you were a GM and you, for theoretical purposes were forced to sign Al Horford(lol I know you never would) what would you give him? Say a 3yr contract for??? what would you deem fair market value for him, again I know you dispise him but entertain us, what would you pay him and why?

LD, unless we make it to the second round, will be fired. I could see him being given an extension if its for a very low salary which LD would take. We all know GM DF likes to employ people he has worked with in the past, so does anyone have any plausible ideas for the next head coach of the hawks?
I honestly cant think of any “sexy” canidates, Brian Shaw- Jerry Sloan?

Some may laugh, but we would be better served with Zaza in the game at the end as opposed to Al. Just on FT% alone.

We played this level of ball without Al last year. We can duplicate it once he’s dealt. He’s not Tim Duncan like I envisioned him having to be for us when we drafted him.

But our problem will be deciding what Josh and his personality is worth.
Perhaps Danny can pull another ‘miracle’ out of his cell phone.

I like our team and they are competitive but we are not contending until we get a superstar or 2. Houston gets more pub than us they are pieced together in 1 offseason.
