Atlanta Hawks: Morrow returns to practice

Here is your report from Monday’s practice:
Anthony Morrow, who missed Saturday’s game with back soreness, participated in practice on Monday. Morrow said he participated on a limited basis but said there were no issues.
“It’s good,” Morrow said. “I got in loosened up. I got some work in. I was kind of limited today but I felt great.”
Morrow said the issue is related to the stress fracture he suffered during his junior season at Georgia Tech.
“Just a little flare up,” Morrow said. “I was going real hard, especially not playing much, and I think I overdid it. I’m always trying to get better so that is on me. I just have to manage it better.”
The pain started during last week’s game against Memphis, his first start of the season. He was able to play through the pain against Miami and Orlando before needing to rest.
Morrow said he was to get treatment before the team departed for Tuesday’s game at Washington. A determination on his playing status will be made before the game based on how he responded to the workout and treatment. Coach Larry Drew said he was hopeful Morrow could play against the Wizards.
Tough stretch
With Tuesday’s game in Washington, the Hawks play four games in five nights in three cities. They have two road-home back-to-backs.
“That’s always a tough stretch when you play that many games – tough teams, tough travel, tough stretch,” Drew said. “We have to really lock in and focus this week. We have to take care of ourselves. We have to do whatever it takes to get us ready to play. With four in five nights we have to take care of our bodies so we can play to the best of our abilities.”
The Hawks host Oklahoma City on Wednesday and then play at Philadelphia Friday and host Chicago Saturday before three days off over Christmas.
Getting back to work
Drew said he was mindful of the upcoming stretch of games but wanted his team back on the court to put Saturday’s blowout loss to Golden State in the rear-view mirror.
“I didn’t want to do too much but there were some things that I felt we really needed to go over,” Drew said. “…We are ready to get back at it. When you play a game like that it’s a matter of getting it out of your system and get back out on the court. I think it’s out of our system. We’ve looked at it, talked about it. It’s time to move on.”
Viewing party
Jocks and Jills will host a viewing party for the Hawks-Wizards game Tuesday in honor of the 25th anniversary of the restaurant’s opening. The eatery, then owned by Randy Wittman, Scott Hastings, Doc Rivers and current owner Craig Sager, opened in 1987. Wittman, who played for the Hawks at the time of the opening, now coaches the Wizards.
The restaurant is located at the Galleria Mall in Atlanta.

Yeah. I think he left because he played baseball also, I think he was drafted pretty high in the baseball draft, and wanted to to play both sports, and the coach at NC State would not let him.

FTPB…the last paragraph of the Hoopsworld article is the 1st time that I’ve seen it mentioned that the Hawks are committed to building around Josh & Al together. I believe it refers to them as the “tent poles” of the team. I find it interesting because I’ve always belonged to the camp saying “one will eventually have to go”.

Just Joe, we know but Danny may too. Unless he grabs a Irving type at the one and a Kobe type at the 3, one of the Duo will probably have to jump on Greyhound eventually.
Combined they do not have the firepower to take this team to the finals and win one..Just not talented enough unfortunately..
Also a Chandler type at the 5 sure would help.

Yea doc that Wilson dude can throw the Football.
Claudell Stewart former former NFL QB is very high on him.. He says as Rookie this guy can see throwing lanes up the middle and deliver the Football which is extremely hard for a rookie to execute successfully so NFL coaches tend not to teach that to Rooks..

I wonder how dumb Seattle management feels after giving Matt Flynn all that money, only to see a rookie QB beat him out.

Rookie of the year is probably a 3 way race between Luck, RG3, and Wilson, but I think playing in Seattle will hurt Wilson, because his games are not played in prime time. The one thing that will hurt RG3 is games missed due to injury, so his numbers won’t be as good as they could have been otherwise.

Just Joe, I considered that whole HoopsWorld article an exercise in increasing trade value. It never makes sense (IMO) for a GM to say anything but “player X is a cornerstone of our future plans and we’re glad to have him”. It tells all other GMs that if you come knocking, you better come correct or not at all.
Paying Josh & Al around $25M with neither able to carry the team on a deep playoff run does not make a ton of sense. And IMO, paying Howard and Josh around $35M for 5 years when neither can likely make the winning offensive play in a late/tight playoff game makes little sense.
IMO, Ferry needs to keep Josh or Al in a “supporting actor” role and find the primary guy who will be tough to defend with the game on the line.

o’b i agree with you. i was stating my opinion that all things fair he should win it with luck right behind and rglll in there as well. like all three of them and followed wilson on move to big ten and rose bowl.. right rod and stupid coach who lost that gig this year. indy fans will dispute it of course as luck has done what ryan did and turn a franchise “downside up” on his first year like ryan did in atl.

All of you “Smoove” fans remember one thing, when the HAWKS played the Thunder it was one of their best games of the season and it was without the “Smoove”. The better teams around the league are well aware of the HAWKS biggest weakness and as we get to play those teams the “Smoove” will be more of a liability then an asset. IVAN needs to replace Josh, he will be more productive with less turnovers. Al and the rest of the team are a more cohesive unit without Josh. I’m not saying that the HAWKS will win more games without JS but I an saying they will be a lot more entertaining. Al will be a supporting cast to an elite player but Josh cannot develop the mindset, after all these years folks still believe he can deliver and he just can’t, that’s a fact folks and if he continues to have games like the one with Golden state then there will be no takers for him at trading time. I am a firm believer in dumping him and his salary. I was one of his biggest fans years ago but you get tired of watching the same movie year after year. Woody was right when he would pull him out of games because of lack of playing defense and that still holds true today, he is not the defensive wiz you folks seem to think he is, that only occurs on certain nights. BEWARE, the fall has just begun, Saturday was a prelude to the future.

FTPB, hard to choose between Josh and Al for MVP of the team. I tend to lean Josh, but Al leading the team to a win over OKC without Josh counts for a lot. Probably have to go co-MVPs with both.
And nothing makes me happier than reading that report from Hoopsworld posted by Astro Joe confirming that the Hawks have no interest in the Josh for Gasol deal. Generally speaking, a deal probably isn’t good for your team when the other team’s fans unanimously want you to do it.

You can firmly place me in the camp that says Josh and Al can be teammates on a title contending team. Maybe the Hoopsworld article is just a trade value inflation piece, but I do not think the Hawks have to choose between one or the other. I don’t even think they have to make that choice immediately if they sign Dwight to play C and have to start Josh and Al at the two forward spots. Even in that scenario I’d rather let them play together for a while and only make a trade if it is clear that the combination can’t work.

LD has went from being the worst Coach in any sport, in any country, at any level (Regular season, year 1) to being a good x and o’s Coach, that struggles with rotations and match ups. If he can improve his rotations, LD may be an NBA Coach for a long time.
And I disagree with whoever said the other day Woody would’ve won that Orlando series a couple of years ago. Doubtful. LD did have the sense enough to play cheeseburger and ZaZa on Dwight, instead of undersized Al. That was a major flaw in Woodys psyche. It remains to be seen how Woody handles the playoffs this year. But he’s a great regular season Coach.
And Carmelo beasts it after years where he plays a summer tournament. I guess it keeps him in shape. He’s MVP right now to me for the League

Josh, Al, Lou, Teague, Ivan, and ZaZa are the basis for a solid team going forward. Instead of re-signing Teague and ZaZa after this season, if you use that cash to get a CP3 and/or Dwight, great. If not, re-sign Teague and ZaZa and try to get more pieces. Properly utilized, those 6 I mentioned are a solid nucleus.
Big fear – Mark Cuban is going to flash max money at Josh Smith in an effort to get Dwight. Do we match or not?

One of their 6’5” corners will have their appeal heard this week (for using PED, or something along those lines). Depending on the outcome, he could be suspended for 4 games, which means he would miss the Seahawks second playoff game (if they made it that far).
I am looking forward to this weekend’s 49ers-Seahawks game.

Woody’s issue against Orlando was he insisted on doubling Dwight, and Orlando’s 3-pt shooters made us pay.
Also, Mark Cuban cannot afford to pay both Josh and Dwight max deals. Remember, they still have Dirk.

I doubt very seriously that anyone offers Josh a max contract. I think theonly player in recent memory who received a max deal without averaging at least 20 points (in his 3rd contract) was Ben Wallace. if another GM wants to make that mistake, you let hm walk and wish him well. And then go sign Paul Millsap for less money, less headaches and equal production.

The rumor is Utah might look to trade either Al Jefferson or Milsap before the deadline.
Paul Milsap is making $8 mil this season, so even with a raise, he will still be good value (imo), averaging 15 pts, 8 rebs, 3 assists, 1 block per game. But I haven’t seen many of his games, so I don’t know how he looks.
Here is a question though. Ivan averages 6.5 pts, 3.5 rebs in 14 mpg. Does he have it in him to become a starter at some point? Could he average 13 and 8 in 32 mpg.

OB, first, I think Ivan is as old or maybe slightly older than Millsap. I think the question is more like, can you TRUST Ivan to stay in the right place emotionally that you can count on him playing 75+ games and 32 mpg?
And to be clear, my suggestion with Millsap is one of value. Is it better to pay Josh $16M/season or Millsap around $10-11M/season?

Orlando had down graded their perimeter defense BIG time by their former GM a couple of years ago while D12 was still in uniform..
That’s why I am convinced Woody would have beaten them in the 1st round of the playoffs that year..

Looking at Ivan it just looks like he is in better shape than anyone on the team. I don’t believe that he would have much basketball wear & tear on his body. This man has the heart,the body & the skills to become an all around good player, you know he will get better as he doesn’t really have that much NBA experience.Now if only LD will give him the chance to grow.

Did Hawks not win at OKC earlier this year? Were Hawks not missing Josh at the time? It will be a tough game tomorrow night (OKC is the most complete team in NBA), but should home court advantage and having Josh this time not give us a fighting chance? Also Teague’s speed causes OKC trouble.

Rusty, I agree with you on your 11:03 post. I was at the game with GS. When Ivan was fouled in the first half, and was complaining to ref, I could hear and see Larry Drew plead and get on Ivan’s case not to complain too loud. Ivan’s only issue is to keep his cool to earn Drew’s trust.

OB, very different scenarios (IMO). Horford is a far better player than Zaza, it isn’t very close. One could choose to focus on one particular facet of the game (rebounding) and say that they are comparable. but I would even disagree with that assessment. Horford can rebound the ball when it is not immediately in his personal space, Zaza isn’t agile enough to do that. And we all know that Zaza’s hands are as reliable as Devin Harris’ health. Zaza is a tremendously valuable back-up center. And we know that he is often a good spot starter. I wouldn’t put Zaza in Al’s category nor would I put Ivan in Josh’s category.

Josh is way better than Paul Millsap, but your talking about two totally different styles of play. But for the cost savings, and if the Jazz gave us Heyward or Favors, or a 1st pick, I’d really have to think about that trade.
Josh is made perfectly for this Hawks team. Millsap is a halfcourt kind of guy on O.

Give me an all ATL frontcourt of Dwight, Josh, Favors, and Hickson. Throw in Bosh who played at Tech. You could make a pretty good ATL backcourt in Lou, Jack, Bynum, and Morrow also – and a bunch of guys I know I’m missing

Steve, I was talking about free agent signings if another GM felt the need to offer Josh a max deal and Ferry (appropriately) refused to match the offer. Not a trade. A contingency plan if someone offers Josh a stupid deal.
