Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 113, Bobcats 90 (updated)

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks were not about to let an opponent back into the game.

Not this time. Not with what was at stake.

The Hawks started fast and rarely let up in a 113-90 drubbing of the lowly Bobcats Thursday night at Philips Arena. The win gave the Hawks (14-6) a share of first place in the Southeast Division and second place in the Eastern Conference with the Heat.

The victory came one night after the Hawks had to hold off the struggling Magic. It also came two weeks after almost losing a double-digit, fourth-quarter lead to these Bobcats at home.

After leading this game by as many as 28 points in the second half all thoughts of another comeback were moot.

“I think we were able to keep executing,” forward Josh Smith said. “We didn’t get complacent. When we get big leads we tend to get complacent a little bit and let our guard down. Tonight we were able to put our foot on the gas and not let up.”

The Hawks have won 11 of their past 13 games on the way to the top of the standings. They have won seven straight against the Bobcats, including all three meetings this season. One of the Hawks’ last two losses came Monday against the Heat when they had a chance to take over first place.

“I think we feel good about where we are right now,” Korver said. “I think we have a lot of room to grow. I think we are just starting to make some strides in areas we need to grow in, like execution, awareness, discipline. We have a lot of talent but we have to keep paying attention to details. I think in the last week and a half the team is starting to do that more. If we keep growing in those areas, that’s what you have to be able do. To beat the good teams in the fourth quarter you have to be able to execute and you have to play with discipline. You can’t just play harder. I think we are starting to get that.”

The struggling Bobcats (7-15) lost their 10th straight game. They haven’t won since Nov. 24 when they matched last season’s win total.

The Hawks didn’t have to rely on Al Horford and Smith in this one. They got big games from a host of players. Devin Harris scored a game- and season-high 20 points. Ivan Johnson, who had not played in three of the past four games, scored 16 points. Lou Williams had 13 points and tied a career-high with nine assists. Kyle Korver returned to the starting lineup and added 13 points.

Coach Larry Drew made a point to highlight the play of Johnson.

“I had not been playing him but he came in tonight and had an impact on the game,” Drew said. “Immediately you felt his presence. He did a phenomenal job coming off the bench.”

Smith had 18 points and Horford chipped in 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers. Horford had his streak of seven straight double-doubles snapped.

An 18-7 Hawks’ run to start the third quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers from DeShawn Stevenson, put the lead at a game-high 28 points.

“I think mentally, in the locker room, we just decided that we were going to do it,” Korver said. “It’s easy to let up when you have a lead. We’ve done that several times. We’ve gotten away with it. But we know. Tonight, coach came in and he was talking about it but he didn’t have to because we were already talking about it. Like we were going to go out there and put them away.”

The Hawks led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter and took a 60-43 lead into intermission. Drew called the first half one of the best by the Hawks this season.

The Hawks took control of the game with an 11-2 run late in the first quarter and never looked back. By the end of the first 12 minutes, the Hawks were leading, 30-19, on 61.1 percent shooting (11 of 18). The Bobcats, by stark contrast, shot just 30 percent (6 of 20).

The Hawks had three double-digit scorers in the first half alone with Harris (16), Smith (12) and Korver (10). Harris bested his previous season-high of 15 points through just one half.

“It wasn’t easy,” center Zaza Pachulia said of the Hawks’ position in the standings. “There are 14 other teams that are trying to be in your place. It always feels good to be number one. It’s just a quarter of the season and we have a long way and more games to go. It’s important to have this feeling. We still have to improve. I’m sure we have a gap there that we can get better, especially against the better teams. We haven’t played New York and Boston yet.”

The Hawks have played back-to-back games four times this season. They are 3-1 in the openers and 4-0 in the finales.

more high-sider:

Lawrence Frank was named the 28th coach in Detroit Pistons history on August 3, 2011. He joins the Pistons after spending last season as the lead assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. Under his defensive guidance, the Celtics led the NBA in fewest points allowed (91.1 ppg) and ranked third in opponent field goal percentage (.434). Offensively, the 2010-11 Celtics led the league in field goal percentage (.486) and finished tied for fourth in the NBA in assists per game (23.4).

Prior to his time in Boston, Frank served the better part of seven seasons as head coach of the New Jersey Nets (2003-04 to 2009-10). Overall, he amassed a regular season mark of 225-241 (.483) with New Jersey. He also led the Nets to four consecutive postseason appearances (2004-07) and holds an 18-20 (.474) record in the playoffs. Frank departed New Jersey as the franchise’s all-time leader in NBA coaching victories.

high-sider, not too shabby and better than i remembered. still he never resonated with me. he was middle of the road but hardly running it into the ground. what a joke.

franks also started 13-0 as head coach and was fired after starting 0-16 which went 3 more games after he was fired. the two final two years coaching the nets to 38-44 totals. not great but again not shabby either.

franks was known as a defensive coach which is as close as the story gets to woody, other than in playoffs franks record is much better that woody, just below .500. really, the major factors both franks and woody will be tied to? it is the successes of jason kidd as if they were their own. catch my drift high sider?

jason kidd leaving, probably started the decline/demise with the nets and was probably because of upper level management issues not franks, incompetence in personnel selection that kidd grew tired of. just guessing and he wanted a trade seeking better which he got in dallas. a fresh start was also in the offing as he was also going through an unsettling divorce unfortunately connected with the spouse abuse charge which during his divorce case suggested was false and trumped up. as an aside during the time franks was in the organization probably while scott was still coach, the nets were also enduring the jayson williams drama. pretty tough stuff for an organization to muddle through.

vince carter also was there and i am not a fan of his. the downfall of the nets is tied just as much to carter coming, as franks coaching i say, tongue firmly planted in cheek. ;-)

VAVA74, You are right about LD when you say that his answer is to put another shooter on the floor, but honestly that is what this team has. This team is built around offense and that could be a good thing because it allows them to show case the talent they have and possible lure a trade for a more defensive presence. This team is fun to watch and if I was not unemployed with three kids I would be a season ticket holder. I would love to see the hawks get a true big man and move Al back to forward. I do like Zaza but he is not really a scoring threat and for some reason LD does not like to play Ivan. I loved me some Ivan last year and LD just refuses to give him minutes. Look at what he did last night.

I would also like to DF get a coach in here that can manage the game. LD is a great X and O’s coach but his biases are too strong. I would love to see a Van Gundy in here but that is not my decision.

Bottom line is this Hawks team is fun to watch and I think they could be, at the very least, the 3 seed from the east.

Front court combos.

How do Josh and Al measure up against….

KG and Pierce
Lebron and Bosh
Melo and Chandler
Noah and Deng
Lopez and Wallace
Hibbert and Granger (eventually)
Turner and Bynum (eventually)

To me, that’s the measuring stick. If we’ve got the 4th or 5th best front court combo, then we’re the 4th or 5th best team in the East. Our guards aren’t good enough to overcome any shortcomings up front.

Man the Hawks still get no love from the media. I just watched highlights of the Bobcats and Hawks on Sportscenter. Rather than it being about how good the Hawks are or that they are tied for 1st place with the Heat, it was all about how bad the Bobcats are.

Things will never change. In the Association, its all about the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics, and Heat(Lebron factor). Then the next level of teams who get occassionally mention….Brooklyn, Bulls, Thunder, Spurs. But the Hawks have gotten less airtime than lottery teams. ITs sort of disappointed, but guess thats cool, as long as we keep winning.

cowbell high sider somehow made up history and obtusely put me vava and gdad into it, scroll. ;-)

just clarifying.

high sider, you also said i despise woody or something like that. far from the truth, which was putting words in my mouth, again showing an obtuse imagination. my post got caught in the fist of the blog monster but essentially had said the same things that najeh and sautee said, good guy who hasnt quite earned his chops coaching in playoff games to show he can lead a team as a coach in the post season.

he will go as far as his players take him. maybe unfair but he had two teams that barely made it into the second round against inferior talent then got beat and is winless in the second round, then almost got shut out in new york in the first round last year falling behind 0-3. it is about the post season by now for woody, every one knows it including him. that is his monkey on the back.

finally, as he was unable to take the team further with the team quitting after the first round two years in a row, it was hard for the asg to say pay him and give him a raise on the 4 mil he was getting and expecting. ld has been worth the buck paid him, in victories especially in comparison to woody 4 mil vs 800k to start i think it was. woody got his 4 mil a year contract after all in new york. so good for him. see h-s it all works out in the end, just like in the movies.

A head coach getting lucky with an ideal roster to match his coaching style. Like a head coach getting a slew of shooters to run a jump-shot happy offense?

IMO, the bigger indictment is on D’Antoni more than Woody. How could a coach be average with an elite scorer, an elite young wing defender, an elite defensive center, a couple of near-elite 3 point shooters (Novak & JR) and the sometimes dynamic Amare? This year, throw in above average PG play between Felton & Kidd and the good coaching decision to use Melo at PF more than previously and you have a really, really good team.

In terms of fortunes, the Knicks won’t be the only team that will live & die by the 3 ball when the playoffs start.

MARTIN-I sincerely hope your situation improves real soon. The biggest knock on Drew is his mismanagement of certain players and his diehard bias against playing and developing younger players. There’s no excuse whatsoever for not playing JJenkins and the inconsistent mins he’s been giving IJohnson.

Ivan’s been consistently productive, especially at doing things the teams needs most, and should never get any DNP CD, NEVER. Jenkins is a pure shooter with good ballhandling and passing skills that’s capable of creating his own shot. There’s definitely room for him to improve if given a chance to play.

Until ATolliver virtually self destructed, Drew had no problem whatsoever finding mins for him while virtually ignoring Ivan. Now that Tolliver has been benched, Ivan is being ignored less, but he’s still being ignored far too often none the less.

When Korver and Stevenson were unable to play, and Tolliver was still being benched, with Ivan getting sporatic mins, Drew refused to give Jenkins any of those available mins. It appears that his personal issues and preferences are far more important to him than his players or his team.

None the less, he’s done an excellent job of getting a group of talented players to come together very quickly and very early in the season to form a darn good team. And to the players credit, they have done a very good job of focusing on the big picture by continuing to win and improve while overcoming some very stupid and unnessary issues that Drew has insisted on dumping on them.

doc, yeah, “elite defensive center”.

I was SHOCKED when some around here doubted the Knicks would be good. That roster is loaded and very, very deep. Consider that Schumpert and Amare haven’t even played… those are two impact players. And Ronnie Brewer 9a very good wing defender) has also played sparingly.

IMO, Woody is likely a very good lockerroom coach. That will only take a team so far but I wouldn’t be quick to underestimate the affect of that. Consider how much better his coaching style worked vs. the much more heralded D’Antoni.

At this rate, Woody may be Josh Smith’s first All Star head coach.

Last night’s game showed Ivan adds value to this team. He should get regular minutes every night. There is not much logic to what Larry Drew does to his minutes. I am sure he could help against Heat.

Still, no one can argue with the record. So if that is the criteria, Laddy Drew’s work this year has been a success.

But Larry Drew got handed a team that was already polished by Woody. To compare his situation to what Woody was handed is not same. Woody seems able to put frameworks in place for teams. He did it with Hawks and he is doing it with NY. He worked with Josh and now Rasheed, Melo, and JR Smith who are all tough guys to coach. We still don’t know what Drew can do if he is handed a tough situation like Woody was handed twice. And he seems to be struggling with Ivan who is a tough guy to coach.

Your right poop, Woddy is a good coach but can he make the adj. I also saw the NBA thing last night, we are going to have to play more formidable opponents to gey some more kudos. Sat. game will be a good test GS is no push over and beat us in their gym. That kid Barnes torched us, too bad the game is not on TV. I really liked Ivan last night, I think Drew busts his nuts too much.John Jenkins needs more game time to bring him along and I am not just talking about garbage time. When Deshawn does not play JJ nees to get some of that play time.

Typical LD:

“”I thought we had a lot of really good performances tonight, but I want to pay special attention to a guy who I thought responded just phenomenally. And that’s Ivan Johnson. I hadn’t been playing him — he hadn’t played the last two or three games — but he came in tonight and responded, and had an impact on the game. Immediately when he got into the game, you felt his presence. That’s who he is, and that’s what we look for from him.”

My question:

duluth the polish had worn off, the team had quit. he regrouped them into a pretty good uear, taking down an upper seed and d12, he polished them up the next year with a complete redo of retreads, then this year gets off to blazing start with a team devoid of our 2′ the all star and drsaft pick with only 4 to 6 players back from previous year? gimme a break bro, he isnt doing this on woody’s coat tails. he has proven himself.

aj, that would be great and both josh and woody would give it the dignity it deserves. couldnt be scripted better, hollywood style.

our record is among the best in the league top six or seven i think. one reason? it is we BEAT three teams with better records. f@ck the media for not giving cred when due. with that said if we go to 47 wins even with this start i will be amazed. again, 18-11 or 19-10 is very feasible if we continue to hold serve.

As desperate as the NBA (and ESPN) is to want the Knicks to so badly win a championship, they will continue to hype Mike Woodson as the second coming of Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach combined. Just wait until the calendar turns to May, when he will continue to live and die off Iso-calls and the veteran Knicks are worn down due to tired legs. All of that supposed “depth” is going to be worthless when you only play 8 guys in the playoffs anyway.

Great game by the Hawks last night, especially by Drew’s use of the bench. Even better were the adjustments Atlanta made to ensure that Gordon didn’t get on a roll, and the collective rebounding really made the difference. Melvin’s right, the culture of this team has changed to a more grind-it-out style and a lot of that has to be credited to Danny Ferry (a product of the Spurs system) as well as Smith/Horford. Saturday night will be a litmus test with the scorching Golden State Warriors (when’s the last time we could say that?) coming into the ATL.

LD is playing with an almost entirely new team this year and lost two of his starters (including the leading scorer – yes I know Josh eclipsed him last year but he was always our #1 option). This year’s success is his own.

And couldn’t agree more on finally seeing Jenkins get some minutes – not many, but still…5 pts in 4 mins, 2/3 shooting, 1/1 3pt. This is a guy who hung more than 30 on Kentucky in the SEC championship game last year – no one should be surprised (including LD).

Doc, valid point that Woody took us to as high as possible. And while Drew has many new pieces on this year’s team, team’s culture is already established by Al and Josh. Ball flows through them.

Some people are good at putting structure in place (framework). They work better in crisis mode. Because of strong personality, disciplinarian, loud voice, action item oriented. That fits Woody. Best for a young team (Hawks) or a team in crisis (NY).

Some are better at refining. Give them a team that is already established, and let them take it to next level. They are better communicators, softer spoken. Better at details. It seems to fit Larry Drew.

Both serve a purpose. And hopefully, both learn and either improve weaknesses, or surround themselves with people that complement them.

To me we got two good young coaches, that Hawks fans been blessed to have if not always obvious while we are in middle of it.

I think NYK will win the championship this year, they have to many 10+ppg scorers. I mean felton kidd brewer anthony chandler with stoudamire,jr smith, novak, wallace, off the bench, not to mention camby when he returns with shumpert is to much talent 1-12 to beat 4 out of 7 times.

Great game last night for ATL, they “stepped on their necks” for sure. After that early 1st qtr quick three by mullens in the corner I thought they were gona yank him but luckily they left him in to self destruct their offense. Char needs to build around Kemba and Kidd-Gilchrist and let everyone else go(keep jeff taylor he has some potential). This hawks team would destroy last years team hands down, how many games last year haave we made 11+ 3-pointers a game, compared to this year? I would guess we have as many or more this year than all of last year.

duluth, well put. we have a lot to be thankful for as atl fans even if we dpnt win championships nor have fans and owners with deep pockets to spend madly on what we love. woody is doing an excellent job, but a coach has a fine line between coaching and getting out of their way. it is what phil did so well, riles, doc, etc. they have to be cheerleaders and motivational speakers, then sound smart and get respect on the other end of the timeout.

listen to the huddles that we are allowed to hear in on. doc is doing more motivation than x’s and o’s. most of the time. he also has a plan well taught to execute and is a mastermind and making in game changes. woody still has to show the latter. he is a great cheerleader to the media of his guys. i dont know if that will translate. maybe his chops will be different this time around or maybe he has enough vets and talent it wont matter a lick. that is why they play the games and line em up to start a season. it is why we watch.

again solid thoughts, thanks for your coming back and expressing them. need guys around here like you.

as far as culture? i think ld was doing his best to pull em up the last few year’s with more studying, a noted deficiency on woody’s part. df being here only reinforces it. i like the focus and intent of the leaders on the team in josh and al. that is huge. it took getting rid of the 2’s which df did with a flourish. who would have thought a trade of jj for stevenson and morrow which is all it was, would turn out to be, in the end, so good?

Thoughts:

Execution, Awareness, Discipline :
We have a lot of talent but we have to keep paying attention to details.
I think in the last week and a half the team is starting to do that more.
If we keep growing in those areas, that’s what you have to be able do.
To beat the good teams in the fourth quarter you have to be able to execute
and you have to play with discipline. You can’t just play harder.
-Kyle Korver-

It`s great to hear intelligent quotes such as this coming from our Hawks
And not the same old spiel:
“we gotta learn to trust each other”;
`tis funny how this bunch is trustin` one another better after 6 wks
than the prev i o u s bunch did after 6 yrs.

LD is benefitting from the expertise of his
New and improved plus more experienced Assist coaching staff.
*the young guy from the NYKs [Kenny Atkinson]
*Bob Weiss – not popular on the blog, but highly exp.
[Weiss is most certanly a better asst than a HC]
*and Pete Radulovic [player dev]

I forgot to put KKorv`s statement in quotes.

I hope this will suffice.

JJenkins played at Vandy;
had he played at UKy he would have been a dif plyr
coming out of college.

Just because a plyr doesn`t create his own shot in college,
[system],
does not mean that mean that he “can`t” create his own shot.

Jenkins couldn’t create his own shot at Vandy. I saw several games in person against UGA that showed me as much. He always had to come off screens.

Should I use D-League games to show me that he CAN create his own shot? I don’t think so. If players like Scott or Damion James can score points in the D-League then anyone can look like an all-star down there.

I think he is a lot like Kyle Korver. The biggest difference between those 2 is that Korver is 6′7 and proven. We’re winning right now so I don’t see why we should be worrying over whether John Jenkins is playing or not.
