Atlanta Hawks game thread: Morrow to start vs. Magic; Pachulia warned for flop (updated)

UPDATE: Anthony Morrow will start for the Hawks. He will be joined by Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, Josh Smith and Al Horford. Coach Larry Drew pressed with Kyle Korver coming back from injury and wanting to rest DeShawn Stevenson in order to play him Thursday against the Bobcats. Drew expects Korver to play about 20 minutes.

Pachulia on flop warning: “It’s a rule so you have to respect the game, respect the rules. Honestly, my first reaction because I saw the elbow coming was just to try to get out of the way because I was so close. I wasn’t trying to flop there but if you look at the film it’s obvious it looks like I was flopping. I was just trying to get out of the way. If the elbow came, I would rather take the $5,000 fine than a broken jaw.

Vivlamore reporting.

ORLANDO — Even with the returns of Kyle Korver and Mike Scott, the Hawks will be a little short-handed tonight against the Magic. DeShawn Stevenson likely will not play in the first game of a back-to-back schedule. Coach Larry Drew said he wants to save Stevenson for Thursday’s game against the Bobcats at Philips Arena.

Korver will not be in the starting lineup as he returns from the back spasms and birth of his first child that kept him out of the past five games. He will play “limited” minutes according to Drew.

While Drew said his starting lineup will be a game-time decision, he is leaning toward starting Anthony Morrow.

Flop warning

Center Zaza Pachulia received a warning for violating the NBA’s anti-flopping rule during last week’s game against the Wizards.

The Wizards’ Kevin Seraphin grabbed a rebound and moved his extended elbow past the face of Pachulia with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter of the Hawks’ victory. Pachulia stumbled backward but never fell to the ground.

According to the new rule, players receive a warning for the first violation, determined by the league office not the on-court officials. The warning is followed by fines for each addition violation: $5,000 fine for a second, $10,000 fine for a third, $15,000 fine for a fourth and $30,000 fine for a fifth.

Korver back

Korver said his back is feeling good. He practiced Tuesday and Wednesday morning and said he is looking forward to getting back on the court.

“I used to have nightmares that I would wake up and turn the TV on and my team was playing,” Korver said. “You look out and see your team is playing and you are not there. That’s kind of what it felt like. For the first time in quite a while I really missed playing basketball because I haven’t missed games in a few years. … There was this break, obviously there were awesome things going on in life, but I want to be out there with those guys. They were playing such good basketball.”

Korver said he is more concerned with getting his timing and rhythm back as opposed to his conditioning.

Scott also back

Rookie Mike Scott practiced with the team Wednesday after arriving from his NBA Development League stint Tuesday. Scott has his best game Monday, the final of four games with the Bakersfield (Calif.) Jam, with 21 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes.

“It was a good learning experience,” Scott said. “I got out and got a chance to play. That was the main thing to get some conditioning in, to play and see the ball go through the hoop.”

Mental challenge

Beginning with tonight’s game against the Magic, the Hawks play three of four games against teams with sub.-500 records. The Bobcats, Warriors (14-7) and Wizards follow tonight’s game.

Competing in those games, especially after playing the likes of the Grizzlies and Heat, will be important according to Drew.

“We’ve played two of the best teams in the league in the first two games of this road trip now we are playing a team that is rebuilding,” Drew said. “Will we get up for the mental challenge? It’s something we have to be real professional about it. We have to be disciplined about it. I will challenge our guys to do that.”

I’m really impressed how the team is gelling thus far. I realize this team may exist in its current form for only this season however I think we are getting a good product on the floor that competes in each game. Go Hawks!!!

I really wanted to go to tonight’s game, but the relentless Christmas schedule has me by the neck. At least I will be able to watch it in HD on my television instead of my computer.

This could be a trap game. The Hawks had found the formula for the Magic. But without Dwight the formula changes. The Magic have been playing better basketball than I would have predicted.

Who arranges these schedules?? We are about to play Orlando, Washington, Bobcats, and GS again?? NY has played the Nets like every other day..I mean dang!! Arent there other teams we could be playing this week? Granted, the teams are very winnable games but it sure would be nice to see others by now. Wished we could have been schedule to play the Nets by there..looking forward to seeing that team in person. Also, wouldnt have mind seeing LA right about now as well, while they are still trying to find themselves. Would be great for Dwight to see how we beat up on his team just so he would want to join us next season…A WINNING SQUAD THAT IS!!

Not surprised Zaza got a warning. More surprised that it hasn’t come earlier in the season. He is a tough guy (and gets into real scuffles) but he loves to act like something was worse than it was.

MsDee good observation. This schedule is front-loaded with bad teams. That means the back end of the season is going to be filled with games against Eastern Conference teams fighting for playoff position. Even though the Hawks have won some big games early, the schedule is not favorable. Playing all those games at the close of the season against teams that have something to play for is not a good look.

Buddy Grizzard

JaeEvolution I don’t believe that rumor for a second. Sure they discussed a trade but when you see what OKC got, no way they would do that deal and only get Beal who shoots as bad as Josh Smith.

Regarding the topic of the previous blog, whether a player is a snub also depends on who made it ahead of him. Josh easily did enough to be an All Star last year, but the bigger travesty was that players like Luol Deng and Roy Hibbert who didn’t shoulder nearly as much responsibility on their teams made it ahead of him.

The standard reaction to this has been to wonder WTF the Wizards were thinking. Yeah, Harden is really good now, but his rookie season wasn’t that different from Beal’s rookie season so far, and Beal’s bad shooting has been improving. I don’t think it’s a guarantee that Harden will be better than Beal three years from now.

They need to weigh Zaza’s torso before they hit him with any fines. Based on some of the charges he takes, his torso is incredibly dense and tough to keep off the ground. He shouldn’t be faulted for a physical deformity.

Agreed on the schedule, MsDee. It’s ugly. And they’ve had 4 days between games twice in the past few weeks, so I’m assuming that will result in less off days as the season goes along (and they’re more valuable).

Move that team to Seattle, people in ATL don’t care about the team and their team is decent. It’s embarrasing to watch the hawks and see 80% of the first 5 rows of seats empty.

I hate to be a harbinger of gloom and doom but the Hawks remind me of team that will play well in the regular season but will “flame out” in the postseason. For example, if the Hawks end this regular season with the 3 seed and have to play a 6-seed, Celtics team in the first round of the 2013 playoffs, don’t be surprised by a Hawks first round [playoff] exit. The Celtics have the talent [e.g., Pierce, Garnett, Rondo, J. Terry, Bass, the coaching of Rivers, etc.] to pull off that type of upset.

My apologies for the pessimism

I don’t think there’s a single Hawks fan who thinks this team is going to win a championship or come anywhere close this year. Nobody is going to be surprised if they lost in the first round. If they actually end up a 3 seed, they would have surpassed nearly everyone’s expectations except ESPN.

From an article on Sports Illustrated-

• MONTA ELLIS OF THE YEAR: Josh Smith

This award, named in honor of Ellis’ tenure with the Warriors, is given to the player with an offensive style so ambitious that it hedges significantly against his production. There’s no question that Smith is a vital piece of Atlanta’s operation and a big part of why the Hawks are third in the East at 12-6. But Smith’s overall contributions can’t overcome his lapses in judgment and mistakes with the ball, both of which have strained the limits of his game and the Hawks’ offensive efficiency. With Atlanta still trying to figure out its most prudent offensive options in light of a massive roster turnover, Smith has returned to some of his worst habits (nasty shot selection, wild passes, forced drives, etc.).
