Atlanta Hawks: Jenkins on way back; Korver awaiting birth of child

Vivlamore reporting from Hawks shoot-around.

As I  tweeted first (got to follow me on Twitter!) this morning, the Hawks will bring rookie John Jenkins back from the NBA Development League today after a two-game stint. They are hopeful that he arrives in time for tonight’s game against the Nuggets.

Jenkins scored a game-high 29 points for the Bakersfield Jam Tuesday night in a win over the Los Angeles D-Fenders. He was 10 of 21 from the field with four rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes.

In his two games, Jenkins combined for 51 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

“That is who John is,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said Wednesday morning. “In looking at the stat sheet, John can score. He was a scorer in college. He can score the basketball. I think both games were really good for him just from the psyche of playing, playing competitive and getting into some type of a rhythm.”

Mike Scott did not play Tuesday due to an illness and will remain in the D-League. The Hawks want the rookie to get healthy and then play in a few more games before making a decision whether to return him the NBA.

In other news:

* Kyle Korver is not with the team as he and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child.

Korver, who has been out with back spasms, left before practice Tuesday upon getting the news that his wife was in labor. The couple was in the hospital as of Wednesday morning. I will update with any news on the arrival of a new shooting guard.

* DeShawn Stevenson, who left Tuesday’s practice after taking an elbow to the head, will play tonight. He was a full participant in the team’s shoot-around.

* Drew said he has yet to make up his mind on a starting lineup against the Nuggets. In the decision to go big or small, Drew said he hasn’t decided if Devin Harris will take Korver’s spot at shooting guard.

“We looked at a couple different lineups during shoot-around,” Drew said. “(I) haven’t decided between big and small lineup. Looking that them, they do start a big lineup. It’s something we’ll talk more about this afternoon.”

* Today is Josh Smith’s 27th birthday. In a stat courtesy of the Hawks’ public relations department, Smith has averaged 15.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.3 steals in his 613 career games. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Smith is the only player in NBA history to have career averages of over 15.0 points. 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals. The league did not begin keeping block and steal statistics until the early-1970s.

* I asked Drew about the team’s poor rebounding numbers that I detailed yesterday. The coach said he is concerned by the statistic.

“When you talk about rebounding, first of all rebounding is dirty work,” Drew said. “It’s just a matter of getting your body on people and just being relentless in pursuing the basketball. It’s not just with our big guys, it’s our perimeters as well. We are going to have to be better in that area. It’s a matter of making a conscious effort of boxing out and then pursing the basketball, coming up with loose balls, going after long rebounds. This Denver team, when you watch them play, they have guys who are just relentless in going to the glass.”

* The Nuggets begin a five-game road trip against the Hawks. When the trip is over, Denver will have played 17 of their first 23 games on the road.

* A reminder that tonight’s game is an 8 p.m. start and will be broadcast by ESPN.

Little Ray,

“If that’s the case, then somebody reset the records. Bill Wennington, James Edwards, Bill Cartwright, and Luc Longley deserve some love….”

Last I checked none of these guy were the best centers of their era’s, and none came close to being Defensive MVP’s of the league.

“Let’s be honest here. Dwight is never going to have the impact Shaq did. Maybe he’ll be good enough to “help” Kobe win another ring or two. Maybe not. Dwight has not dominated the way Shaq did. As Najeh stated, the offense just isn’t there.”

What’s you point. No one ever said he would have that kind of impact. Simply said he was a better defender and a better rebounder than Shaq was, and also that he was better from the free throw line.

“True, we’ve yet to see him play with another bonafide superstar. Shaq brought rings to L.A. and Miami. Dwight isn’t going to bring a ring to L.A. Last I looked, they were able to win one with Bynum’s gimpy and disinterested a$$.”

Shaq never won a ring until he got to LA in a proven system (the triangle), with another superstar and a proven coach. He went to the finals with his Orlando team and lost, which was much better than the Orlando team that Dwight Howard took to the finals and lost with.

“Shaq = HOFer. Dwight = somebody who would have gotten his lunch eaten on a daily basis if he’d have to deal with Mourning, Ewing, Olajuwon, etc. Not to mention Shaq in his prime. OH, that would have been ugly.”

If Dwight continues on the pace he is on, he will easily be a first ballot HOFer no matter what you think. I very seriously doubt that Alonzo Morning or even Pat Ewing would eat Dwight Howard’s lunch. He would do the same thing to them that he does to everyone else. Shaq and Hakeem would have done well against him, but he would probably be the best defensive big that either of them played against.

National TV time to man up and put a good showing on for the country. Denver is no push over, with JT pushing it and smoove and Horford in the paint we should do just fine of course ZAZA in the middle against MCGee. I would like to see more Ivan too. Lets give some time to John J tonight, he needs to be in the rook. hunt.

How soon we all forget. LOL. You do realize that what they did fouling him is called the Hack a Shaq right. Dwight is struggling at the line now. It is what it is. So did Shaq. Shaq was worse. Good coaches now how to adjust.

john jenkins would be playing for any other team except the atlanta hawks because of an inept coach in larry drew. this kid has shown he can play and has the talent to be a great player on the nba level players like deshawn stevenson can’t hold a candle to him but in drew’s system, he gets lost. you can’t learn by sitting on the bench.he needs to play jenkins.he can shoot better than most of the players on the team plus he can defend.hopefully, drew won’t let him get lost in the shuffle and lose his talents and confidence

I think the reason Ferry has bought back Jenkins is because he has seen enough in 2 games to see that he should be on the NBA court instead of the D-league’s court!! Even with Korver still being out, we still have Harris, Stevenson, Lou, & Morrow ahead of him, so why bring him back if not to play him?? I think Ferry informed Drew to play the kid some min tonight. Get him out there to see if his shots will continue to fall like they have the past two d-league games. I think thats a smart move by Ferry, IF indeed he said these things.

“‘Dwight may be a slightly better defender and rebounder than Shaq (debatable but I can see the argument). But what is not debatable is that Shaq was MILES ahead of Dwight as an offensive player.”

After 8 years:

Dwight Howard: 1344 Blocks, 8072 rebounds, 3 defensive player of the year awards
Shaq: 1436 blocks, 6615 Rebounds

It really is not debatable. The only statement that was made in comparison of the two guys is that Dwight was a better defensive player and rebounder than Shaq, and a better free throw shooter. Shaq was the more dominant, and better offensive player no question.

Could Ferry be in some kind of works to maybe offer up Harris, Zaza, & Petro(being a throw-in) for Pau Gasol?? I know that would NOT be a smart move considering the fact that Zaza is our only REAL center but stranger things has happened!!

Am I wrong on this….didn’t Jenkins and Scott have to take a bit of a pay cut because of their D-League stints? I thought that was part of the new CBA.

Good games by Jenkins. I hope bringing him back up means he is going to get some minutes. Otherwise, what’s the point? He’s not going to develope just sitting and watching. He’s going to need minutes. But, I’m still not sure who to sit. Harris, Marrow, Williams, Stephenson…everyone is playing well! Playing Jenkins will cut someone’s time.

doc,

“d12 is a fake. he is not what he represents himself to be. superman he aint only a tat to suggest it and no force to back it up.”

What is he a fake at? Is not not the best center of this era? What’s fake about that?

“to compare shaq’s total blks for a career against d12’s first five years is a stretch. go back and see that shaq’s nimbers for the first 9 years are favorable to if not exceeding d12’s in blocks or in every category including “i am the man” factor which d12 continues to lack. isnt he now now saying he lacks something once again though he steps onto the laker court? he can only be happy if he ends up paired with lbj who has proven himself in a way d12 isnt even trying to do.”

After 8 years:

Dwight Howard: 1344 Blocks, 8072 rebounds, 3 defensive player of the year awards
Shaq: 1436 blocks, 6615 Rebounds

Blocks look very comparable, Rebounds are not close. One guy has won 3 defensive player of the year awards the other never won any.

“when shaq was on the floor you knew where he was, when d12 is on the floor it is another game. yes d12 racks up stats but i dont see him dominating anything the way shaq once did. i always knew where shaq was, d 12 gets lost in the flow sometimes and it is getting worse. d12 nimbers over a career, i suggest, will not exceed shaq’s though he plays in a far different climate for centers.”

You don’t see d12 dominating the game? I guess you must have missed that playoff series against the Hawks then when our brilliant coach refused to double him. Or I guess you missed when he led his team to the NBA finals with the next best player being Hedo Turkaloo. The memory of some on this blog is comical.

If it becomes a era thing, and I’m a guy who would represent the 90’s era. I would take a team of Howard, Duncan (or KG), Lebron, Kobe, and CP3, and suit up against in era’s top 5 guys and feel very confident.

Shaq with Penny couldn’t do what Dwight with Jameer could do and that is take his team to the finals WITH ORLANDO. Shaq has had defenders near him as well, Glen Rice, Rick Fox, Josh Salley, Horace Grant, etc play more defense than the Magic team ( with the exception of Pietrus) and the Lakers team. Noone on that team plays defense with a coach that runs offense and no defense. Also Shaq has had the pleasure of being under Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. Not far to compare the 2 when Dwight had less and did better than Shaq.

Are you guys still discussing Shaq versus Dwight Howard? Shaq was more physical and an offensive force, while Howard is a defensive stopper who can put back misses (as you can tell, I am not a huge Howard fan). I’d rather have Shaq on my team any day of the week (and twice on Sunday) due to his size, strength, and personality.

Shaq was a big tough man, Howard is a big man trying to act tough.

Zaza is not a particularly good match up against guys like McGee.

Zaza plays better against opponents with more girth that hops (Koufos).

Zaza is 6′11 with a wingspan on or around 7′ and a 5” vertical.

McGee is 7′0” with a 7′6½” wingspan and a 31½-inch vertical.

Jenkins is not the problem and he has never been the problem. Coach Drew and his antiquated way of playing rookies is the problem. The NBA has a way of weeding out those players that don’t belong there. Jenkins don’t need the help of coach showing him the door out of the league.

Well its hard on any coach if you have 5 people in one position…..thats on ferry if ask me. Don’t draft Jenkins and then get 3 more people thats just like him! lol Most teams draft a person in a position they need or not more then 3 or 2 people ahead of them for that matter.

Astro Joe

People are being short-sighted regarding Jenkins. He will get his time (likely after the trade deadline).

As for now, DeShawn is the team’s best perimeter defender and is shooting 40% from 3. Korver is a vocal leader who has knocked down several importnat shots in the early season and is shooting 42% from 3. Morrow hasn’t received consistent playing time while shooting over 50% from 3 and showing an ability to make contested mid-range shots. And Lou Williams is one of the team’s leading scorers and a viable SMOY candidate (and is a personal friend of Josh Smith which means something to some people).

So where is LD supposed to play a rookie SG? Again, be patient. Jenkins was NOT likely drafted to contribute in the first 3-4 months of his rookie year. Once Korver is healthy and able to fully re-join the team, I hope they send Jenkins back to the D-League for him to continue to shine over there.

When Jenkins was drafted, our roster was Teague, Joe, Marvin, Josh, Al & ZaZa. We needed a guard.

The Joe & Marvin trades were not about the players in return. It was about the contracts in return.

Ferry has to try to turn some of these expiring contracts in to draft picks. That’s hard to do if the players attached to those contracts aren’t getting playing time. Jenkins will likely have plenty of opportunities to play after the trade deadline.

There is a real possibility that this team could end the season with less talent/depth than they started with…and still make the playoffs.

MsDee, I suspect that Jenkins is coming back to provide SG depth if Korver is still dealing with back problems. I read the story that he is not with the team due to the birth of his baby but I have not yet read anything that says that he is actually healthy enough to play. And with DeShawn’s inability to play back-to-back games, the Hawks need that extra depth in case an in-game injury/ejection happens. I wouldn’t expect JJ2 to get time ahead of a healthy DeShawn, LouWill and Morrow tonight. But I won’t be mad if he does. :)

The “Smoove” should average 10 rebounds a game but he will never do that because he lives at the 3 point line. Tonight the HAWKS could be trounced by 30 if those outside shots the “Smoove” is hoisting up are not dropping. He scored 25 against the Cavaliers and we lost, I wonder why. Rebounds, blocked shots and scoring is the “Smooves” forte. When the HAWKS get more then a 7 point lead watch how it dissipates quickly if the “Smooves” lauchhing is not productive, it tends to kill a rally. I’m not high on this guy, I think he hurts more then help. Time has given the facts and I for one am looking for a trade, the HAWKS would be better off as a cohesive group losing then ambiguous wins.

The basketball IQ of some of the people responding to this blog kills me. The guys ahead of Jenkins are all proven players in this league Harris is a former 20+ all-star, Morrow is one of the best 3 pt shooters in this league, Stevenson is a champion and a lock -down defensive player. Drew is doing a excellent job, no one expected the Hawks to be the best defensive team in the league at any point of this season.

Grandad,

Is Lebron on steroids too?

” Look at how y’all are dissin’ Dwight Howard [sic].
He’s the best center in the league.”

Debatable ?”

Please provide a debate for Dwight Howard not being the best center in the league for the last 5 years. I’m interested to hear your perspective.

I think people hate on Larry Drew because he doesn’t exactly look the part, he looks like an old drunk lol. Bottom line the man can coach better than half the guys in the league. Woodson was supposed to be a defensive guru, but the Hawks were top 10 in defense last year without Al and tops this year so far. There are maybe 3 teams better than the Hawks in the East right now, not many thought they would make the playoffs when they traded Joe.

I apologize, as I cannot site the article.

Currently, unless he does two things:
(1) regains 100% of his previous Health [back]
(2) changes his narcissistic attitude.

Otherwise he is Not the best, nor will he return to being the Best.
Now;

I think Dwight puts up great stats;

So I have to believe that every Atlanta-born person is better than every non Atlanta-born person? Really? Ciara is better than Beyonce? Lou Williams is better than Manu Ginobli? B.o.B. is better than Rakim? Freddie Freeman is better than Albert Pujols? Gladys Knight is better than Aretha Franklin? Dwight Howard is better than Shaq? Goodie Mob is better than NWA? Monica is better than Alicia Keys? Josh Smith is better than Charles Barkley?

Hate is the feeling towards a person when he/she has done something bad to you! I only hate that hawks organization has not addressed the need for a coach that can win and develop champions. LDrew is trying to secure another contract and thus can’t balance between his and ours-the HAWKS.

“Fans here don’t understand what it means to be a fan. People praising the Georgia Bulldogs for playing a good game last week. LOL. They lost.” – Rod

So now, being a “FAN” means you can’t praise effort in a defeat?

No thanks, Rod. You can keep that kind of fanhood. That’s restricting (and diminishing) your fanhood to wins and losses only.

There’s MUCH more to being a fan, IMHO.

“How soon we all forget. LOL. You do realize that what they did fouling him is called the Hack a Shaq right. Dwight is struggling at the line now. It is what it is. So did Shaq. Shaq was worse. Good coaches now how to adjust.”

I’m well aware of the tactic ‘Hack-a-Bad FT shooter’ the fact remains that he will never be a good FT shooter, ever. There is no adjustment either he makes his FT’s or your forced to get a stop almost everytime. You can’t bench your best rebounder, shot-blocker, and overall defensive presence not to mention Howard would have fits on the bench in crunchtime. Also in the final 2 minutes where they can’t hack him anymore, it’s not like you can go to the guy offensively, they’ll just foul him without facing the 2 shot + possession penalty. Lakers are in a tough position and with all that talent not clicking, tension is running high.

Fans in Atlanta are somewhat delusional, if the team doesn’t win a title every year then they suck. The word FAN is short for FANATIC, meaning you ride or die for your team til the end. Take the Kansas City Chiefs, they have been bad for a while yet they have the best fan support in the league. True FANS!!!

Dominique is from North Carolina. I’m trying to understand the standard… maybe you either had to play for a pro sports team in Atlanta or have grown up in Atlanta? So, therefore, should we all uniformly say that Solomon Jones is better than Marcus Camby??? Varsity better than Fuddruckers?

Grandada, like you said, we’re showcasing Devin. IMO, better to showcase Devin for 2-3 months than give token minutes to Jenkins. Again, the key being a very narrow window… up to the trade deadline.

People if it wasn’t for Drew, Teague wouldn’t be playing for the Hawks. It was Woody who gave up on him, Drew gave Jeff a shoot. His hands are tied in Jenkins situation, cause all the vets are playing ball. Morrow isn’t getting enough playing time, yet he’s shooting 50% from the 3 pt line.

Maybe we’re supposed to want every Atlanta-born player to come home to the Hawks? Let’s trade Al Horford for JJ Hickson. Trade Jeff Teague for Javaris Crittenton’s draft rights (and empty revolver).

Losers mentalities. LOL. I’m a fan, but I’m not a dummy. Georgia gets no credit for losing from me. The Hawks get no credit for continuing to get put out in the first round from me. Falcons get no credit for wining in the regular season, and getting skunked in the playoffs from me. Guess it is just how you were raised. Most of you probably played in little league parks who gave trophies to everyone who played on the team. I did not. You only got a trophy if your team won.

Rod: you named 3 players whod id much rather have as our center than Dwight Howard. 7′4 Rick Smits was a beast on offense and defense, Patrick Ewing was also better than Dwight in both categories, and Sabonis had offense game that Howard could only dream of!
Face it, your man Dwight is overrated, cant hit free throws in the clutch (making him a liability at end of games), and worst of all…. a QUITTER! The way he quit on the magic last year was pathetic.

Never that. I support all Atlanta teams. But having traveled a lot and seen the standard that winning organizations have and their fans, I won’t continue to support these losers. Obviously you are are Braves fan, Do you walk aroud talking about the 13 straight division titles like that is the greatest thing ever. Or are you upset that out of those 13 years, we only have 1 world series title and choked away the series with the Yankees and the Twins.
