Atlanta Hawks game thread: Smaller lineup vs. Nuggets

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks will go with a smaller starting unit against the Nuggets. Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, DeShawn Stevenson, Josh Smith and Al Horford will get the starting assignment against the bigger five from the Nuggets.

“Sometimes you’ve got to roll the dice,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said of his lineup decision. “I’m really going on feel with this. Instead of always adjusting to the other team, sometimes it’s good to go with your guy and see if they adjust to you or see if it works. With the lineup that we are going with I do like the fact that we are a lot faster. We do give up size. At some point in the game that lineup is going to change and we’ll get bigger. I really going with feel on this.

“Some things that I really like about the smaller lineup is the fact that again, particularly at home, we’ll be able to get up and down much better. I would anticipate more pick-and-roll basketball with both Devin and Jeff.”

Also, John Jenkins did make it back from his D-League assignment and will be available.

“It was really fun to go out there and see the ball go in a few times,” Jenkins said. “… There is definitely some talent down there. There are a lot of guys fighting for spots to come up here, so they want to impress people. I knew me being a call-down there would be pressure on me, with those guys trying to go at me. I had to match their intensity and go at them, too.”

Hawks: 44 rebounds (17 offensive)
Nuggets: 38 rebounds (9 offensive)

Josh 11 rebounds (3 offensive)
Faried 7 rebounds (2 offensive)

Winning the rebounding battle has been HUGE.

The Hawks’ record is now 10 – 5 [0.667]; that’s a two-thirds [2/3] winning percentage. Lame Duck is getting the job done – plain and simple.

Without a doubt, he deserves props for the start the Hawks have had this season. I know there are things we can all complain about regarding his performance but on the whole he has been solid. Feels weird to not openly disapprove of a Hawks coach’s performance, but it’s the truth.

We will take it, Teague’s defense was not his best effort. Josh late but looked lousy early. I guess it how you finish. Al was a beast, and ZAZA in the 2nd. Ivan got some good minutes matched Faried’s energy, Lou was real good and all in all we did not choke in the end like we did against Cleveland.

Addition by Subtraction. The time has come for new leadership in Atlanta. Pau has 3-4 years left. Metta will give you cap flexibilty in 2 years. In the mean time, you bring in toughness and finesse.

Sheesh….well Ty Lawson kicked Teague’s can all over the place, but we outrebounded them, had fewer fouls, more steals, and fewer turnovers. That can make for a tight game, but the guys pulled it out.

Keith, you must be a Lakers fan, intent on getting two of Hawks best players in return for an old, ailing injured, and unatheltic Gasol in return. Lakers have fleeced the league for years. For you to be advocating any trade to LA, you are either an LA fan or a secretive Hawks hater. Which one are you? Please state your claim.

Zaza did have a big 2nd quarter while Mozgov was in, but he wasn’t the reason he had 11. Z was the beneficiary of some amazing ball movement and in the second quarter scored on Mozgov via a shooting foul which earned Zaza one FT and an and one. Also in this second quarter Mozgov grabbed 5 rebounds (2 OR, 3 DR) against Zaza before he was replaced by Brewer for the rest of the half.

PG-Devin Harris
SG-Kyle Korver
SF-Metta
PF-Josh Smith
C–Pau Gasol

Lou Williams and Anthony Morrow 1st off the bench. This roster gives you inside scoring and toughness, something we desperately need.

Again, it’s still early, but 15 games into the season, I could NOT have said that I thought by now the Hawks would….

1) Have a winning record, much less be winning two-thirds of their games…

2) With Al Horford as the leading scorer (and Josh right behind him by half a point).

3) With the leading scorer at less than 17 ppg.

4) And LD at the helm.

Just sayin’….not half bad. Let’s see where this goes.

And it seems that Josh and Al can have good games together after all. It’s just a matter of matchups.

Jae Evolution

Also Ty Lawson turning the ball over in the final 30 seconds is what cost them the game, before that Mozgov had gotten his SEVENTH offensive rebound off Gallo’s missed three, which could’ve put the Nuggets up or taken the lead had Lawson not turned it over.

Mozgov is a big defensive liability. His D is mediocre at best. He scored all the easy points due to Denver’s guards giving him ball and he was standing alone under basket. His two PF’s in the last minutes cost game for Denver. Mozgov has no his own game whatsoever, he is a spectator mostly…

keith

Pau’s inside scoring will allow us to match baskets with the Heat. If they decide to double Pau, we have Korver, Devin, Morrow, and Jenkins, who will drain a “3″. Hate to see Al go, but addition by subtraction.

Denver made a mistake by leaving Mozgov in the game instaed of McGee. In my opinion that cost them a game. Horford would not score that much if McGee played against him…

Jae Evolution

Big defensive liability? Eh. Foul prone? Yes.

Zaza got easy points just like Mozgov, guards found him IN THE PAINT and put him in a position where he had the highest chance to score either by dunking it, laying it up, or getting fouled. The 4th PF on Mozgov came on a play where Josh got the ball to bounce literally in his hands if I’m Denver I’m not mad at my guy trying to foul a 50% FT shooter with the game close. His 5th PF was Lou Williams coming full speed at him and Lou being as crafty as he is gave Mozgov no choice but to foul those were fouls ANY big man would commit.

Mozgov’s REBOUNDING effort is what kept him in the game late, similar to if Josh isn’t all in and Zaza is giving effort he will keep Z in the game. It was the same thing tonight GK saw Mozgov going after boards and needed that late in the game and it almost paid off. Mozgov 13 boards in 27 minutes McGee 3 in 22 minutes.
