Atlanta Hawks game thread: Smaller lineup vs. Nuggets

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks will go with a smaller starting unit against the Nuggets. Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, DeShawn Stevenson, Josh Smith and Al Horford will get the starting assignment against the bigger five from the Nuggets.

“Sometimes you’ve got to roll the dice,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said of his lineup decision. “I’m really going on feel with this. Instead of always adjusting to the other team, sometimes it’s good to go with your guy and see if they adjust to you or see if it works. With the lineup that we are going with I do like the fact that we are a lot faster. We do give up size. At some point in the game that lineup is going to change and we’ll get bigger. I really going with feel on this.

“Some things that I really like about the smaller lineup is the fact that again, particularly at home, we’ll be able to get up and down much better. I would anticipate more pick-and-roll basketball with both Devin and Jeff.”

Also, John Jenkins did make it back from his D-League assignment and will be available.

“It was really fun to go out there and see the ball go in a few times,” Jenkins said. “… There is definitely some talent down there. There are a lot of guys fighting for spots to come up here, so they want to impress people. I knew me being a call-down there would be pressure on me, with those guys trying to go at me. I had to match their intensity and go at them, too.”

Hawks have 13 more shot attempts than the Nuggets in this game. Nice things happen when you rebound.

Where is Jenkins. I guess we spent a first round pick on a guy to sit on the bench.

Josh Smith and all-star game should not be mentioned in the same PARAGRAPH. I would send Josh down to the D-league for a few weeks, the Big Dummy.

Najeh Davenpoop and Rev in Tampa,

I tripped out when Woody referred to Jonas Jerebko [of the Pistons] when he was a rookie as Jonas “Jericho.” I was waiting for “the walls to come tumbling down.” [LOL]

The Nuggets’ perimeter players do a really good job of contesting post entry passes after the opposing player has already picked up his dribble. Lawson was doing it to Teague earlier, making him have to lob it higher and farther away from the hoop, but Brewer just did it too.

I think it is fair to say that SF is NOT Ivan’s natural position.

Ivan has played well in spurts at SF on D this season, but he has struggled a little on that end in this game. The Nuggets’ perimeter players are a little too quick for him to guard consistently. Playing the three big lineup isn’t a bad idea when Ivan has a favorable matchup, but asking him to guard someone like Brewer who really plays more like a guard is a tall order.

Jon Barry sounds like he is barely tolerating this play by play guy.

Faried throws up an airball layup from 2 feet away and yells “AND ONE” loud enough to get picked up by the broadcast.

Slimjr

December 5th, 2012
10:18 pm

Rev Teague was trying to time the layup and block it from behind, but this savvy Lawson dude would not allow it by slowing down and blocking Teague to not allow a block to occur..

Najeh Davenpoop

They are really missing Kyle Korver’s off the ball movement in the half court. That ugly Teague floater was caused entirely by a complete lack of off the ball movement.
