Atlanta Hawks: Korver out, Harris to start vs. Cavs

Vivlamore reporting.

Kyle Korver, who is suffering from back spasms, will not play tonight against the Cavaliers. The guard did not participate in the team shootaround Friday morning but was at Philips Arena. Coach Larry Drew confirmed he will be the  inactive player following the workout. Korver missed Tuesday’s practice and left Wednesday’s game against the Bobcats in the third quarter with the injury. The Hawks don’t play again until Wednesday affording Korver plenty of rest.

In Korver’s place, Devin Harris will start at the  shooting guard position. Look for the Hawks to play even more up-tempo with essentially two point guards on the court to start the game.

The rest of the starting lineup will be DeShawn Stevenson at small forward, Josh Smith at power forward and Al Horford at center.

Guard Anthony Morrow, who suffered a quad contusion in Thursday’s practice, participated in the shootaround.  Drew said a decision on Morrow’s status will be made before the game however it seems likely he will play.

Without Korver, rookie guard John Jenkins could see playing time. Drew would not commit to such a move but said it was possible, especially if Morrow can not play, depending on matchups.

I will post a game thread blog later today.

FTPB,

Just Joe,

Damion’s game is not the most suited for the D-League which is a fast paced, no defense, pickup type of game.

Even so, he posted this yesterday:

D. James F min32:01 FG 9-15 3PFG0-1 FT 0-2 ±-1 Oreb3 Dreb4 Reb7 Ast2 PF5 Stl1 TO 4 BLK4 BA2 PTS 18

Can’t see anything particularly wrong there apart from the turnovers, but that can be a direct consequence of the fast paced game which I don’t think caters to his below average passing and dribbling skills.

LD will still find a way to not give the rook any minutes…..against the Cavs of all teams smh.

I’d rather have Dominic McGuire (cut yesterday) than Damion James.

Chris Palmer: David Lee has had his shot blocked 30 times this season. Most in the NBA. Twitter @ESPNChrisPalmer

WHAT, not Marvin Williams??

Drew should take a page from Gregg Pop and let John Jenkins play against the homey Cavs!! Coach Pop allowed basically 2nd and 3rd string players almost defend the Champs!! GO FIGURE!! I would allow Morrow to take Korver’s place and allow Jenkins to sub for Morrow. Come on, Drew, let him play!!

MsDee, that’s funny. I wonder what Hawks fans would say if LD kept our best 4 players out of a game against the Heat (just to give them a rest with only 12-15 games played so far)?

Hawks are 12th in shooting percentages …8th in Effective Field Goal Percentage… 4th in Assist Ratio….#1 defensive efficiency team in the NBA.

Reading on ESPN that Charolotte would take back the “Hornet” logo in New Orleans gave it up. It is my understanding NO does not want to be the Hornets anymore. If that happens, Utah needs to give NO back the Jazz. Utah should have done like OKC and made up a name for their basketball team. Only makes sense to me….

ag, all leagues should make teams leave their names behind if the switch cities. If the Kings leave Sacramento (as an example), they should have to choose a new name in their new location.

If Utah is giving up the “Jazz” name, does LA have to give Minnesota back the rights to the “Lakers”? Do we have to hand over Spirit the Hawk if St. Louis has a new franchise sometime in the future?

Morrow has been way better than I expected. I think he has contributed in every opportunity he has received. Hope he can go tonight. I think Cleveland is better than their record.

If Morrow can’t go, or can’t go for long, Jenkins getting time will be interesting. I don’t feel like I have an opinion on him, yet. Would be cool if he got some minutes that matter tonight.

Man….last time Cleveland was here (late March, I think) the game was tough. Joe Johnson saved that day in that one. Getting the 7th win in-a-row will not come easy. Looking forward to watching Kyrie Irving tonight.

vava, Damion James? Why the mancrush on him? Agree he is a decent player. But, lineup 100 D-League players and blindfold me. The first guy I picked would be just as good as Damion James.

slimjr,

You, of all folks on the blog, should read this article about Matt Ryan at Grantland:

An excellent perspective on our expectations.

Now back to Hawks biz.

Where was David Stern when Utah decided to retain the name “Jazz” ? Utah Bobcats (or Stars who drafted Moses Malone right out of high school), New Orleans Jazz, Charlotte Hornets – settled

I posted those stats earlier on James not because I dislike him, but because I think they show he needs more growth as a player.

4 turnovers and had his shot blocked twice? What’s he trying to do?

Defend…Rebound the ball and get it to one of your guards… and (from Hoosiers) “Don’t shoot the ball unless you’re under the rim all by yourself” (or something along that line / believe the kid’s name was “Stack”).

James could still carve out a niche in the league by rebounding & playing defense. Reggie Evans has made a solid career out of it, and he’s not even a great defender.

no way Jenkins better defender at the small forward/big guard position than Korver. maybe one day in the future but not now.

This is one of those games the HAWKS should win handedly, a no contest kind of thing. I know, I know, in the NBA nothing is ever guaranteed but they still should not make this game one of those down to the wire kind of finish. The “Smoove”, may be learning to play to his strengths, the book is still out on that. I still see the “I am the Superstar”, tendency from time to time. I do hope Jenkins get some playing time this evening and maybe Mike Scott getting a few minutes also.
These HAWKS are entertaining, enjoyable and fun to watch with a winning mindset oozing in a growing pains kind of way. Lets hope the “Smoove” will continue not to be a bust or detriment to this fun loving to watch group of players. I hope he becomes an integral part of smart play and team cohesiveness, only time will tell. I’m chomping at the bit to watch this game just to see a growth spurt.

Anthony is a proven rotation guy in this league. would be good to get him contributing. esp now that KK is hurt and Josh’s knee problems we are 1 wrong step from needing help @ 2-3.

Disagree and it’s a no contest for me.

Damion possess ELITE nba skil: rebounding.

Only a small percentage of the players in the league have that. Not talking about star potential. Will not go that far but this guy is a prime time rebounder AND he has a huge motor and is an adept defender.

Not sidewise but he emulates the Rodman type. We are not talking about a Mario West which had no discernible skill beyond motor and willingness to defend.

Just Joe,

The kid has suffered two years of injuries. He shot .400 and .375 from 3 point land in college during his last two seasons.
