Atlanta Hawks game thread: Sixth straight win on line

Vivlamore reporting with your game thread blog for tonight’s contest against the Bobcats.

Al Horford, the reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Week, appreciates the honor but quickly turned the focus to his team Wednesday.

“I think it’s pretty cool but it just shows that when you win you put yourself in a position for things like this,” Horford said following shoot-around prior to tonight’s game against the Bobcats. “It was a good thing, but it was obviously because of our winning streak.”

Horford averaged 16.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 blocks in the four games of the week of Nov. 19-25.

Horford is also one of three Hawks on the NBA All-Star ballot. After being an All-Star for two straight years, Horford missed last year’s game with a torn pectoral muscle. The center quickly turned a question about his desire to return to the All-Star game to focus on the team goal.

“I think it’s nice when you get recognition like that but, I think most important for us, we want to be winning and be one of those top teams and keep that going,” Horford said. “I think that all that will take care of itself, whether I should be or shouldn’t be. I think we just have to keep winning and get better as a team.”

Horford said he had no problem with the league’s decision to put front-court players on the All-Star ballot and not break them down into center and forward positions.

* On the injury front, Kyle Korver (back) is a go and will be in the starting lineup. Korver missed Tuesday’s practice with a stiff back but was a full participant in Wednesday’s shoot-around. Devin Harris (turf toe) will likely play but is being called a game-time decision. He will be examined by the training staff prior to the game before a final decision is made. He is was full participant in the shoot-around.

* Other starters are Jeff Teague, DeShawn Stevenson, Josh Smith and Horford. It’s the same starting lineup coach Larry Drew used in last week’s 101-91 win at Charlotte.

“It gives us a chance to have size on them at the 2 and the 3 spot,” Drew said. “Both (their) guys, (Jeff) Taylor and (Michael Kidd-)Gilchrist, are extremely athletic. But I do like from a size standpoint that we are able to match up against them.”

* The Bobcats are coming off their worst defeat in franchise history in Monday’s 114-69 loss at the Thunder. Hawks coaches and players expect a feisty Bobcats team aimed at bouncing back from the miserable defeat.

“Don’t buy into that this team is going to come in flat, particularly after a loss like that,” Drew said he told his team. “… I would expect them to be even more energized just to prove that the game they had the other night was just one of those games.”

* The Hawks are concerned about Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions, who scored a team-high 22 points in their meeting last week.

“He hurt us up there,” Drew said. “He came into the game and really pushed the basketball and got into the paint and drew fouls. He’s really good at drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line. One of our points of emphasis was to keep them off the free-throw line as much as we can. Sessions gets in there and he has that uncanny ability to get in there and draw fouls.

“That’s something that we have to be conscious about defending. We did not do a good job up there with him. I went back and looked at the game and we did not do a good job. This was after made baskets. We had ample time to get back and get our defense matched up.”

* The Hawks’ five-game winning streak is their longest since Jan. 2-12, 2011. They had a high of four straight wins (twice) last season. If they defeat the Bobcats for the sixth straight win tonight it will match the six wins to start the 2010-11 season (Oct. 27-Nov. 5, 2010). The last seven-game win streak? Nov. 7-20, 2009.

I hate that the Bobcats are coming in to Philips tonight after getting the beat down from the Thunder. They’ll be ready to go. I still think the Bobcats are a decent team. I don’t know what the h#ll happened to them the other night against OKC.

I think the Bobcats are like the Hawks were, circa 2006-2007. A team capable of winning every night, but winning requires supreme effort. Any letdown and a blowout could take place. I don’t think the Bobcats will play that badly two games in a row.

Looking forward to the game tonight. If the Bobcats play to their abilities, this will be a fast paced game (just like last Friday night, in Charlotte).

I think we can get it up to 8 wins. Not that I want the Hawks looking past the ‘Cats and the Cavs, but I think we match up really well w/ Denver.

Then the Wiz again. Could totally be 9.

Keep the streak alive Hawks!

Al and Josh both need to study clips of the Zeller kid’s performance against my Heels last night. Kid torched us by using his speed and situational awareness to sprint the court after defensive rebounds, and his guards consistently found him for easy buckets over the top of a slower Carolina defense. Zeller must have had 6-7 buckets from sprint outs, and several foul shots from silly fouls our guys commmitted due to frustration with Zeller’s run outs. He simply murdered our spirit and will to compete with those run outs, and Al and Josh could do the same for the Hawks.

The Hawks team that included Marvin and Joe would have made me very worried about this game. I’d be quoting Admiral Ackbar – It’s a trap.

But I have yet to see any real letdown from this team so far. So I believe that the Hawks will come out prepared to compete. If they do that they should solidly defeat the Bobcats.

I know we won’t be in position b/c he’ll be drafted too high, but if the Atlanta Hawks drafted Cody Zeller in the first round out of Indiana, I would never have anything to do with them again. It would be Chris Crawford/Hanno Mottola/Cal Bowdler all over again!

Anyone else remember in 1999 when we had 4 first round picks? I think that was one of the most exciting times I have ever had as a Hawks fan thinking about different possibilities. Then we go out and draft Jason Terry, Cal Bowdler, Dion Glover, and Jumaine Jones. Out of that entire draft class only 13 guys are still on NBA rosters. Manu Ginobli was the next-to-last player picked.

Anyone concerned that the hawks haven’t played teams with a good won-loss record or that they don’t play such teams for the foreseeable future. We had better win these games now because the others are surely coming.

Samurai, I could not possibly disagree with you more. Cody Zeller is a the real deal. He will be a worthy #1 pick in the draft. No way you have watched Zeller play much. You would not have that opionion if you did.

I was at the Sweet 16 game here in Atlanta last season. Anthony Davis had problems all night trying to contain Zeller. In fact, if you didn’t know the names, and it was player A and player B, you walk away saying Zeller is the better player.

Watching Kobe struggle to beat Indiana last night is a true sign of the times with the NBA. There needs to be about 20 announced retirements at the end of the year. Vince Rip KG Kurt Thomas Sheed Billups Ray Allen Stackhouse Jamison Metta Elton Brand J Kidd knocking on the door Paul Pierce Jason Terry Bynum Roy annnd Kobe. The league has vanished. There only a few superstars left and most of them are in Miami OKC New York San Antonio and maybe Chicago D Rose. To call Chris Paul Deron Williams Rondo and Dwight Howard yes him Superstar, just does not give justice to the word. So yeah Go Hawks!!! Besides there has to be a Championship somewhere in the cards. DAWGS! Hawks! Falcons! Somewhere DAMNN!

Zeller reminds me of Lopez a lot. A very slow footed, methodical big who will make you pay if you are impatient defensively. Rebounds at an average rate in college but it’s tough to see him being any better at the NBA level. Has a good amount of post moves that will allow him to score at the next level right away. Defensively he will suffer as he is no stopper and quicker bigs will give him a ton of problems. Overall I expect him to follow closely in Brook Lopez career projectory, an old school Center with a bevy of post moves but one who is lacking defensively.

@ Najeh agreed morrow is a liability on D but i thought this was small offensive team so playing teague/lou-morrow/korver starting should be the go and bring dsteve when d is required.

Do we know more about morrow – he looks stiff moving i know he had a knee done but kid looks slow or was he always just not very athletic?

Id rather morrow taking those 2 shots that harris missed
