Atlanta Hawks: More to Stevenson than SpongeBob socks

DeShawn Stevenson reacts to hitting a 3-pointer during a game against the Pacers at Philips Arena in November.

Vivlamore reporting from vacation. Here is the feature story on DeShawn Stevenson that will run in the Thanksgiving Day print edition of the AJC.

DeShawn Stevenson was a sight to behold as he left a recent Hawks workout. The veteran guard walked down a near empty corridor in the bowels of Philips Arena wearing a dark hoodie and sweat pants pulled up to his knees.

How else was he going to show off his bright yellow SpongeBob socks?

A vast collection of outlandish hosiery is just a part of what makes Stevenson the most unique character on the Hawks roster. A tattoo of Abraham Lincoln on the center of his throat is part of his vast collection of body art and piercings. His on-court persona comes to life with his signature ‘goggles’ gesture following a made 3-pointer.

Stevenson knows how to enjoy the business of professional basketball.

“I like to have fun,” said the veteran, acquired by the Hawks in the Joe Johnson trade with the Nets. “You see when I’m out here playing with the guys (following practice), I’m a jokester. You have to be serious but at the same you have to bring some fun to it.”

Where to begin with what makes Stevenson tick?

The socks: Those began with a way to amuse his young daughters. The girls like to wear crazy socks and one day Stevenson donned a pair. The family enjoyment was enough. Now, no trip to the mall is complete without the purchase of a new set.

Stevenson said Anthony Morrow and rookie Mike Scott have gotten into the act because of him. They each politely decline such a notion.

“No man, I already had my funky sock deal when he came to New Jersey,” Morrow said. “He was probably doing it before me because he’s old. I’ll pay homage but I did that on my own. I started that trend with my era.”

Stevenson is still the one to top, according to at least one. Kyle Korver noted that Stevenson ‘crushes’ all such fashionistas.

DeShawn Stevenson got a tattoo of Abraham Lincoln on this neck, just part of his body art collection. PHOTOS BY CURTIS COMPTON

DeShawn Stevenson got a tattoo of Abraham Lincoln on this neck, just part of his body art collection. PHOTOS BY CURTIS COMPTON

The tattoos: That has become an addiction. Stevenson spends his summers getting inked – major body parts at a time. He said he will spend 12-13 hours in a session with his artist in Orlando getting work done on his arms, back, neck and more. The tattoo artist even makes house calls.

“They are used to me,” Stevenson said. “I spend a lot of money on tattoos.”

The Lincoln portrait was not his first choice. Stevenson let Gilbert Arenas, then a teammate with the Wizards, know his intention to get a tattoo of Martin Luther King Jr. Arenas did so first. Stevenson settled on Lincoln for “all the things he did for us.” He added a pair of 5s on each side of the image, as in a five dollar bill, to avoid confusion for admirers of the work.

“It hurt,” Stevenson said simply in describing the process of getting the tattoo in such a location.

The gesture: That has taken on several forms. Early in his career, Stevenson would place his hand over his eye after a 3-pointer. When he played for the Mavericks, where he won an NBA title, he altered the move. He now forms a circle with his thumb and index finger leaving three fingers extended. He will move the circle to his eye and after a few seconds snap it away as a salute. It caught on and continues.

The move was not always appreciated early in his career.

“Me being in the league for 13 years now, people know I’ve got gimmicks,” Stevenson said. “They tend not to feed into it but when I first started, it kind of (ticked) some guys off.”

Stevenson, who is also active on Twitter, is often referred to as 13 by his younger teammates, a reference to his number of years in the league. The 31-year-old has played for the Jazz, Magic, Wizards, Mavericks and Nets before joining the Hawks this season. His career started as the 23rd overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Jazz straight out of high school.

Stevenson has become a valuable on-court presence for the Hawks. Despite his aging knees, coach Larry Drew turns to him as a defensive presence at the guard and small forward positions.

“I’ve always admired his game from afar, just the fact that he knows who he is,” Drew said. “He doesn’t come out and try to do too much. From a defensive standpoint, that is his strength and that is who he is. I like that he brings that to the table. My biggest concern was how healthy he would be and how healthy we would stay. So far, he has been really good for us.”

the way i see this one going is like this:

wizards control tempo and game thru 3 quarters or so and the hawks struggle to get the lead. midway thru the fourth the hawks make a run and instead of putting a lesser opponent away early at home–this one goes down to the wire with the hawks winning by single digits. i’ve seen this game a million times with the hawks and the falcons.

i hope i’m wrong and we blow them out by halftime–but don’t count on it!

go hawks!

This game had a lot of blame to pass around. Many of the bloggers have their favorites and they have the guys they just don’t like. My observation:

Many criticize Josh and say we will never win with him. I am a big Josh fan, but, truly he really tried to lose this game for us. After pounding the ball inside all game, in the 4th quarter and in OT he continued to shoot and miss jumpers. The only thing falling were his layups. His stat sheet certainly looks better than he played late in the game.

I am a Horford fan. He missed so many easy layups and killed many assist tonight. Then he misses 9 of 10 free throws, 4 in OT! Great stat line, by the Horford haters will have a lot to chew on after that mess.

I posted to unleash JT0. JT0 took 18 shots, but only scored 14 points! Worse, AJ Price looked like CP 3, as JT0’s defense was HORRIBLE!

Ivan Johnson played so poorly that I even wanted to see Anthony Tolliver.

Looks like it was a yet another typical “Hawks downgrading their effort/execution to meet the opponents standards night”

It has happened quite a lot in the past. The good thing is that we squeaked out a win :-D

I see that the “bash Josh” tribe has been very active last evening. I am sure that criticism is deserved but you gotta look at Horford’s production in the 4th quarter and in the OT before you throw a stone at Josh…

http://popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20121121&game=WASATL

Horford: 2/8FG, 1/6FT 3 (1off) rebounds, 5 assists, 1PF

Josh: 3/8FG, 4 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 TOs, 1 blk, 4PF

Yuk… really can’t pick who was worst…

Get Off!

Yawl need to stop breathing down Josh’s back and GET OFF his sacks. Josh is the face of this franchise AND heart & soul of this team. Without Mr. Smith, The Hawks are NEVER even in this game at the end. Kyle Korver;s talents make Joe Johnson an after thought … no more ball pounding on the perimeter looks great. Kyle looks like Reggie Miller running around the floor out there.

Allow this team that I LOVE to find their own mettle and gel together. We have only seen 10 games so far. If anyone had predicted a 6-4 start to the season, I would have taken that line.

Yeah he finally got rid of Tolliver out of the rotation. But when Josh fouled out last night, I would considered playing him, but guess he hadnt played all night so he wouldnt risk it.

Watching LD is so frustrating, its almost like he has no clue when to ride the hot hand and what guys to go with in certain situations.

Devin Harris in the game late created problems for the offense I think. The hard part I know, is that Teague needs to be on the floor because he creates shots and get inside easily by most defenders. But also Lou, needs to be out there too. His ability to finish and get to the free throw line is important and is a better half court offensive player than Teague. Why doesnt he play both? Is it simply he is worried about the size disadvantage? I can understand if that was Kobe out there at 2 guard, but they had a rookie out there who was having a bad game. Im sure he wouldnt have hurt us that bad. He could play some offense for defense or do 2-3 mintutes with Lou and Teague together, and mix in Devin for defense. We really need both on the court, to limit the Osh jacking up jumpers.

glw,

Normally I’d agree with you about having Lou on the floor, but he was a real liability last night. Plus it was Devin that hit the two huge free-throws at the end to tie it up. Devin had a good game last night even though he did not finish at least one fast break lay-up.

I’m not saying in some instances you don’t have Devin out there. But LD simply goes one extreme or the other rather than mixing a little of all 3. End of NBA games are mostly iso plays and Lou is your best. As bad as he was going, I think Hawks win with Lou on the floor down the stretch because it limits Osh long range shooting at the end of games.

Didnt they get out rebounded like 58-37? I wonder why. This team is really thin on the front court.

They need to make a trade really soon. For example look at the Warriors they are loaded in the front court with:

SF Barnes, R. Jefferson, Bazemore
PF David Lee, Carl Landry, Draymond Green
C Festus Ezeli, Andrus Biedrins, Andrew Bogut

Cleary they can make a move if not with this team, there is a team out there.

At the beginning of the season, I really liked the Hawks roster. I think Ferry made every move correctly when assembling this roster. I just thought ultimately our defense would be our undoing. However, after the first 10 games our defense has played surprisingly well, but its the offense that is not performing up to standards. We just have too many guys not performing up to their capabilities right now….Josh is shooting only .427 from the field, Lou is .398, Devin Harris is .392, not to mention Al’s FT percentage is 50 percent and Josh is at 40 percent. Too many guys have not gelled in this offense. I will say guys like Korver and Ivan have truly blossomed in this offense, and I hope the rest will be on the same page soon. Once Lou, Devin, and Josh start heating up, and IF we can continue to play this type of defense, I can see a 3 or 4 seed going into the playoffs, just as I predicted before the season started.

Also, BIG shoutout to Ivan Johnson, who I think can become a solid double-double option if just given more minutes. He showed signs as a rookie last year, but finally after a year in the league he is really starting to blossom. So far this year he is averaging 5.4 points and 3 rebounds in only 11.9 minutes a game. That averages out to 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per 36 minutes. I would take that from my power forward any day of the week. I think he is only going to get better.

Secondly, BIG props to Korver as well. Dude is hitting big shot after big shot. I praised this move more than most, and I am happy he is proving me right. He’s no Reggie Miller, but I will take 43 percent from 3 point range any day of the week. Joe, in his last few years here never even sniffed 40 percent from 3.

“obviously they won in spite of LD and his bizarro substitution patterns”

For once I have to agree with Najeh. I don’t have a problem with LD’s coaching in this game. He stayed with Teague in spite of his non-existent defense on AJ Price because the Hawks were outscored by 19 with Lou Williams on the floor. He went to Devin, who had one of his better games as a Hawk, down the stretch and left Lou on the bench. He also didn’t play Ivan again after the Hawks were outscored by 13 points in only 6 minutes of Ivan on the court.

It’s not LD’s fault that Horford missed 9 free throws and Teague allowed dribble penetration on every possession that AJ Price brought the ball down court.

We should really look to Denver as a team we could trade with to start building toward next year. They have their two big men in McGee and Koufos and aren’t looking to add anymore salary with Lawson and McGee contracts kicking in and Iggy’s extension coming up in the near future.

We could send Zaza and Stevenson over to Denver and get back J. Hamilton and Mozgov. Hamilton has shown to be a pure scorer and a decent rebounder in limited minutes (3 RPG in 12 MPG) and Mozgov is just kind of sitting there with George Karl playing favorites. They are also thin at SG position and 3 PT shooting and Stevenson could come in and help that along with Zaza being another big body in case McGee/Koufos goes down. Mozgov is also up for a contract extension and I know they don’t want to pay a guy who they can’t find minutes for.

Bottom line they get two expiring contracts to help ease their ever growing cap and two guys who can help push them farther in the playoffs for this season. We get Hamilton who can come in and start at SF or come off the bench as a pure scorer, along with Mozgov a big body 7 footer who rebounds, blocks shots and can run the floor and use him moving forward in the future.

“Stevenson could come in and help that…”

Stevenson does have a positive aggregate +/- for the season, indicating that his defense does make up for his lack of offensive production. However, they’re resting him on back-to-backs. This guy’s career is just about done. He’s not helping the Hawks stop the opposing small forward from having a season-best night every game. Stevenson is a stop-gap for the Hawks at small forward and was statistically one of the 50 or so worst players to play in an NBA game last season. I doubt anyone sees him as a solution to anything.

JaeEvolution

If he is a stop-gap for us why can’t he be a stop-gap for Denver to spell Iggy for a few minutes at the SG position. The majority of their team is athletic slashers and they desperately need some perimeter shooting which Stevenson gives to go along with his competent D. Also he doesn’t need to lock-up the opposing SF they have great defenders already in Iggy, Brewer and Chandler when healthy.

The trade mostly benefits them from a salary standpoint as they can’t afford to match both Mozgov’s contract this year and then re-sign Iggy next year without suffering harsh tax and they aren’t a market that can do that.

I might’ve substituted Morrow or Jenkins into the trade, but Morrow puts too much salary on Denver’s side and I don’t think I’d want to trade away Jenkins before seeing what he could do just yet although I wouldn’t be absolutely opposed to it.

“I am not sure that his play warrants his $12mill/per yr salary?”

Al Horford was ranked #30 this year in NBA Rank. Here are the salaries for players 31-40 rounded to the nearest million:

31. Josh Smith $13m

32. Rudy Gay $16m

33. Joe Johnson $20m

34. Zach Randolph $17m

35. Roy Hibbert $14m

36. Joakim Noah $11m

37. Luol Deng $13m

38. Eric Gordon $14m

39. Danny Granger $13m

40. Stephen Curry $4m

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8398070/2012-nba-player-rankings-31-40

As you can see, Horford’s contract is a bargain compared to the 10 players ranked after him except Joakim Noah and Steph Curry, who will make over $10m a year starting next year when his extension kicks in. This is known as the Stephen Curry Discount since he would have made more on his extension if not for his injury history.

Plainly, obviously, Al Horford has one of the most reasonable contracts in the NBA.

Buddy,

I respect your opinion, in general, but you frequently rely on rankings that basically worthless.

Those rankings are nothing more than “interest raising” pieces to get more hits and generate more $$ for the ESPN site.

PER is also completely unreliable and to bring back last year’s production by DeShawn to talk about his current value is NOT an acceptable argument.

DeShawn’s production, so far, has been decent. He is shooting reasonably well from 3point land*, he is providing decent and disciplined D at SG and SF (although at SF is struggling more) and he is not committing TO’s and finally, he is in general showing an excellent attitude which may rub on the other guys.

* and actually hitting those shots when they matter most.

I am sure that if you dangle him on a trade offer, there will be takers for his services.

Just Joe

82games suggests that Stevenson is defending both the SG and SF position at an avg clip. He doesn’t appear to be a problem unless LD goes back to playing him 25+ minutes a night.

That site also shows that Kyle Korver is a beast at SG, but is somewhat of a wash at SF. It favors the Teague, Korver, Smith, Horford, Pachulia lineup because of its emphasis on rebounding, and that group grabs over 55% of all potential rebounds (which is really good). Memphis’s starting 5 grabs 53%. Lakers are 51%. Knicks and Clippers are under 50%. IMO though, for this group to work, Teague would have to turn in to a 20-pt scorer, and we’d need to address the second unit, which would be very small.

One disclosure on the rebounds, Hawks haven’t been on the floor together nearly as much as other teams. Our 5-man unit has been together less than a third of the time that Memphis’s has been on the floor together. Sample size could definitely be a factor.

vava74

November 23rd, 2012
8:13 am

Just Joe,

Our line up and rotation should be the following (thus addressing the rebounding issue and not placing Josh where he can’t succeed):

Teague – KK – D.James – Josh – Horford
Harris – Lou/Morr/DeS – KK/Morr/DeS – Ivan – Zaza

vava74

November 23rd, 2012
8:17 am

That would allow to use DeShawn sparingly, keeping him fresh and ready to deployed only when strictly needed.

Morrow would provide minutes and fire power at SG and SF depending on need if KK and/or Lou were cold.

Lou should NEVER play PG.
Josh should NEVER play SF.
Horford should SELDOM play PF.

Damion James would provide the hustle and the rebounding that we need to start games and set the tone.

No specific need for him to log 30+. On or around 20/24 mpg depending on production should be enough.

Interesting game. The good thing is tht guys bailed each other out. Korver wasn’t very good early but Josh and Al helped carry the early load. When Josh and Al struggled late, Korver bailed them out with the deep 3. That’s a good sign (IMO). Albeit against a pathetic team they should have defeated by 13_ points.

I hope no one is expected an easy victory tonight… Bobcats have been at least as good as the hawks in the early part of the season.

Speaking of early part of the season, so Tolliver will likely be used sparingly for 90% of this season and yet watch bloggers routinely act like he is still in the rotation.

I’d like the Hawks to find a way to get Gortat out of Phoenix. If they could co-exist (some history there, I think), a Gortat-Pachulia rotation at center could work well. Gortat has voiced his frustration at times in Phoenix, speaking out against a lack of defensive effort & ball rotation. I’ve seen where the usual suspects have had interest (Dallas, Boston, etc…), but not the Hawks (maybe we still have our sights on Howard/Bynum this summer).

Trade Horford Now

November 23rd, 2012
12:20 pm

I dont know how much longer we can put up with Al horford. This is the same dude that cost us the playoff last year with 7 turnovers in the last game. Get rid of this non team player… move me to powerforward or else you wont get any defense from me at center jerk .

Al is a Jerk and the sand bag that is holding this team down ….

Trade his sorry ass as soon as possible or as many has suggested Amnesty his ass

Stevenson is 12-34 35%. He is 4-8 50% in his other shots. Oddly enough take away the first game of the season, he is 8-26! Over his last 10 attempts, he has hit one.

His defense has been okay, but I think he has played better against SF. Hardin tore him up! LBJ took a big shot over him also, but LBJ is more of a PF.

Just Joe, this is what makes the GM role so much fun (and so stressful). Howard is about as decisive as a 7 YO girl… do you let deals go by that will surely upgrade your roster (but not deliver a true superstar) on hopes that you can land a true superstar in the summer?

Punnany Jones.

Josh should never ever play small forward. It is not his game Josh should Always play power Forward. He is one of the very best in the NBA and a MUCH better power forward than Hoford.

Al should never ever (or rarely) play power forward. The dude just doent have the skill set to handle a position on this level.

It hurts the team exponentially to have Al at the PF and Josh at the Small Forward. I dont know if Al can play the Small forward, but he would probably be better at it than Josh. But Al being a Non team player, will probably not try to play the position and continue his nonchalant effort at center, forcing the hawks to accept his lower tier play at power forward and force a top 5 power forward into a position that he is not good at.

This is a direct relationship with poor coaching. Period.

Josh should never play small forward and Al should rarely play Power Forward.

If the management and or coaches feel that Al is a liability defensively at center an a minor contributor offensively then It would be better to trade Al and upgrade the position than to be content to go nowhere and continue with the same mediocrity.

Grandad…”all about matchups” is the same thing we’re saying by labeling Korver, or Josh, as a 2, 3, SF, PF, etc… We’re insinuating that Korver impacts the game more when he’s in a lineup with 3 bigs. Or Josh performs better or worse (depends on who you ask) when he’s the 2nd or 3rd big on the floor. Call them whatever positions you want, but for the most part, we’re talking size & offensive/defensive roles.

Eddie Curry can help us out on the offensive end. He shoots the basketball better than our current PF and centers. What we would gain in offense, we lose in defense.

“DS has to be the WORST shooting starting 2 guard in the NBA right now!”

He is shooting 35.3% from 3 this year. That isn’t setting the world on fire but it is not bad. There’s nothing special about Stevenson, but based on what he did last year he has exceeded expectations.

Raise your hand if you thought the Hawks would be #1 in the league in defensive efficiency 10 games into the season.

They are top 10 in the league at eFG% allowed (in large part because they defend the 3 really well) and limiting the number of fouls committed, and they are #1 in the league in forcing turnovers.

Even on offense, where they are only 24th in offensive efficiency, they are actually top 10 in eFG% and are middle of the pack in committing turnovers. They are dead last in getting to the free throw line, which is a problem.

Where they are hurt on both ends of the floor more than anything else is rebounding. They are bottom 10 in both offensive and defensive rebounding. Really, looking at the stats, rebounding is the difference between this team being average and elite right now. With that being the case, it’s hard not to believe that Damion James couldn’t have helped.

Gotta think that when (if?) Lou finds his game, they will get better at getting to the line. They have also increased the pace since the start of the season (they are above average in pace) which should result in more trips to the line as people get fouled in transition. Add some trips to the line to a team that already shoots well and defends well and they will be in decent shape.

But the rebounding is going to be a problem all season unless they make a personnel change. It’s not like the big men are that far off their usual pace on the boards — only Josh is down slightly, while Ivan, Al, and Zaza are all pretty much the same as they were the last few years. Everyone else, though, has been atrocious on the boards and don’t look to get much better since nearly all of them except Teague are undersized for their position. Teague is athletic enough to do better on the boards, but it is pretty unrealistic to expect more out of Harris at SG, Korver, Lou, Stevenson, or Morrow.

Would be nice if Tolliver had any value at all, if the Hawks could trade him for someone who could play SG/SF and boost the team’s rebounding ability. Someone like Omri Casspi, for example, who has sucked this year at everything other than rebounding and 3 point shooting and can play SF.

Buddy,

Soft Al who does not want to bang and forces us to go with Zaza at C and Josh at SF is not worth 12/13 million.

That’s my opinion, although I would hope him to regain his warrior mentality under a real coach.

However, IMO, that would be less likely that getting a josh to become more discipline.

It’s easier, IMO to instill discipline than fire.

Derrick Williams with the T-wolves would be an interesting player to have. The guy is stuck on their bench behind Love and Kirilenko. The former #2 pick would get plenty of opportunity on this team to play some SF/PF. His 4 million dollar salary would be easily exchangeable for Anthony Morrow’s 4 million a year. Our depth (shooters) for some of their depth (cheap size).

Very good win tonight, played much better than they did against the Wizards. Kyle is definitely shooting the ball well, which is big because of our lack of rebounding. Jeff played really well this game, didn’t realize he shot the ball so poorly, but with 12 dimes, I can live with it. Horford was on the receiving end of many of those dimes and he is making all of the difference for this team He’s being very aggressive around the rim. Josh shot poorly again, but he’s playing better and was great with his 8 assists. I’m not sure what’s wrong with Lou, but he doesn’t look right. Hopefully tomorrow night he can get his game back.

I dont know what you guys are seeing that makes Teague so much better than Harris. They’re both very quick, but Harris attacks the basket harder, passes better, his shot looks better, and he can actually knock down clutch free throws. He’s also made an all-star game.

Teague doesnt automatically deserve more minutes than Harris. It should be whoever is hot on the particular night or at that point in the game. Harris averaged 16.5 PPG the final month of last season. Please stop writing this man off as a scrub.

4-12, 5 TO’s 2 stls 2 blks and 8 assists are the stats on the “Smoove”. LD did the right thing and let him rest on the pine the majority of the 4th quarter. The danger with the “Smoove” is that he learns slow. I will say that he is giving the ball up to the guards more and passing up on some of the shots that are out of his range but he still has a prob letting the game come to him.
His team mates are beginning to play around him which has everyone moving, maybe this wanna be star is beginning to get the message who knows. His stats speak for themselves and on a nightly basis he is not as consistant as he needs to be. Al is playing, JT is finding him and the “Smoove” could be such an asset if he just played ball. He really needs to understand that his game is not outside but inside. Somebody pass that on. The game was entertaining and fun to watch, go HAWKS.

This game is exactly what everyone was waiting for. Horford had a blow out game and now the “Hawks don’t need Josh” chants start. And vice versa. It is true that, together or separate, they will not lead us to the ECF let alone the Finals. However, they can work well off of each other and that’s about it.

Our schedule has been favorable. But we have beaten a good Thunder team and a decent Indiana and Portland team. Looking ahead, our schedule shows promise. Our hardest games will be pretty much the whole month of January and March.

Here’s a question though. I find myself really bored watching the Hawks. Even when we are winning, has anyone else gone through this?

Mookie Blaylock

November 24th, 2012
1:19 am

There are several things that influence “stats,” such as one’s role on the team, how many mins per game he plays, etc.

What I have to go on is the eye test, and when Harris does see the court, he’s attacking the basket harder and making better passes.

I saw him make him some clutch free throws with the game on the line that Teague probably would have bricked. He’s made an all-star game, has Teague? Oh, that was years ago right?

Sure, but Harris averaged 16.5 ppg the final month of last year. Has Teague ever averaged that many ppg during a months time?

I’m not saying at this point in their careers, Harris is better, but Teague doesnt just automatically deserve more minutes every game. It depends on who’s hot on the particular night. If Harris continues to play the way he played these last couple time games (which the final month of last season indicates he still can play at that level), then you cant say Teague is always a better option than him.

Mookie Blaylock

November 24th, 2012
1:29 am

I like Teague and Harris, I’m just saying that whoever gets more mins between the two should depend on which ever one of them is having the better game. This gap between how good Teague is and how much a bum Harris has become isn’t neatly as wide as many like to make it seem. It’s not like Teague possesses some special skill set that Harris doesnt also have. I think Harris has more stones than Teague in the clutch though.

Mookie Blaylock

I said I’m cool with both Teague and Harris. It’s just that sometimes on here, when comparing Teague and Harris, you’d think someone was comparing Steve Nash in his prime to Royal Ivey. In reality, it’s not the much of a difference…I just think Harris is more aggressive, has more confidence, and is more clutch. This will be valuable at the end of several games, so it cant just be a given that Teague should close out all games. Nah, not necessarily.

Najeh Davenpoop

November 24th, 2012
1:48 am

I’ll let Ken beat you over the head with stats — all I’ll say is, watch the game flow. When Teague is in, the Hawks build and maintain leads. When Teague sits, the other team eventually gets around to making a run. LD has experimented with playing Harris and Lou together with the 2nd unit to try to mitigate Lou’s inability to play point guard and it hasn’t really worked.

In terms of quickness, Harris is close to Teague’s equal. In terms of drawing fouls, Harris may be slightly better, in large part because Teague doesn’t really know how to sell contact as well as Harris yet. In man to man defense, both have had ups and downs. When it comes to everything else — passing, setting up teammates, shooting, forcing turnovers — Teague has been far better than Harris.

Even when Harris was an All Star he was never a great shooter or passer — his game was mostly driving inside and drawing fouls at a higher rate than nearly everyone else in the league. Never a high assist or high percentage PG. Teague’s eFG% and assist rate this year are both better than Devin’s in his All Star year.

Najeh Davenpoop

Mozgov could be our Asik especially if we poison pill the contract. Denver is almost in the same salary situation as Chicago was when they had to let Asik go. Buddy if you think about it now there aren’t many big men threats out East. Bynum maybe if he ever gets healthy but Mozgov has gone toe to toe with Bynum before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQo00oczkyQ) and held his own. One thing I would keep in mind as far as FA next season, is that if CP3 signs the max with Clippers their salary is looking to be around 60-62M and that is with them losing Odom and Billups and nearly their whole bench who have been playing well for them. This next season is also the one where the luxury tax hits teams VERY hard for luxury tax payers, and their owner is known for being rather cheap. So can the Clippers still remain a competitive team with so little money to re-tool their squad seeing as I doubt a cheap owner goes far into the tax. I wonder if CP3 ever looks at this kind of stuff…

Clippers are one of the most profitable NBA franchises. Sterling has the money laying around. Now that he finally has a decent team, I’m sure he has no problem spending. What was the point in spending on a lottery team?

I was very surprised to see JT0 played less than 30 minutes again. With the flow of the game, I really did not have a problem with LD’s substitutions.

Mookie Blaylock said the big FT’s Devin scored against the Wiz. I do believe JT0 was in the same situation earlier this season. Also, JT0 leads the team in FT %.

At this point of the season, what we said in preseason in coming to fruition.. the loss of JJ was offset by the return of Al Horford. Korver/Lou > Marvin Williams. What has not materialized is Josh and JT0 having better seasons than last year.

The Clippers loss is arguably our worst showing of the year. Hawks had 22 turnovers, shot 41% from the field, allowed 12 steals, and managed to score just 76 points.

Hawks went with the big lineup in that game, and likely will again tonight. Running a half court offense and scoring consistently with Teague, Korver, Smith, Horford, and Pachulia on the floor is the challenge. How do you spread the floor with Smith, Horford, and Pachulia all around the basket?

Bold prediction: Josh finds his jumper. Scores 25+, hitting at least 2 threes. Hawks win a close one.

As far as quality win for the Knicks, Miami and San Antonio. They have beaten teams they suppose to as well. They did lose to Memphis and Houston. The loss to Dallas is tough considering they are playing without their best player.

It looks like LD has settled on a starting lineup and bench rotation. As a result, the team is starting to gain some chemistry and momentum. Korver knows he’ll start at SF, Harris knows he’ll start at SG, Ivan knows he’ll come in ahead of Tolliver, and Stevenson knows he’ll get mins at SG and SF off the bench. Knowing their roles and who they’ll be playing with most of the time seems to be making a big difference.

No one has come close to blowing this team out, and they are going to get better the longer they play together. They’ve actually been in position to win all but 1 of the gms they’ve lost. Teague has proven to be the best PG this team has had since the days of Mookie Blaylock, and he seems to be on cruise control. I know I’ve seen enough of him to know he could easily score more pts and have more assists if he took on a bigger role offensively.

DHarris is more like LWilliams, primarily a scorer with some PG skills, but neither is as good as team as far as being a facilitator is concerned. We can about what we expect might happen in next yrs FA all we want, but this team could be a serious player this yr if LDrew steps up and he puts more emphasis on actual DEF rather than just giving it lip service.

And once again I’ll mention what DOC said about Drew admitting he made mistake in cutting DJames and KBenson in favor of JPetro and ATolliver. James and Benson would instantly make this team taller, stronger, more versatile, and much better defensively as well as rebounding wise.

The team can certainly afford to rid itself of a misfiring 3pt shooter(Tolliver) and a total nonfactor(Petro). The youth, talent and potential of James and Benson could serve this team for yrs to come if given time and opportunity to develop. James had a preseason impact simular to IJohnson and look at how that turned out. Drew should have given James the same opportunity he gave Ivan, because he sure as hell earned it.

In order for this team to really move forward, Josh has to realize he’s not a #1 scorer and can’t be relied on to carry the team or the teams OFF load. He’s just too immature, inconsistent, and doesn’t have the OFF tools to make it happen. The sooner he realizes that, and accepts his role on this very talented and diverse team, the better off both he and the team will be.

Although he had a very solid season last yr offensively, he had a #1 scorer in JJ to releave the pressure he’s now facing. He has to realize that Horford and Teague are what makes this team go, and

I was a little skeptical about this Asik-Mozgov comparison, but there is more to it than I previously thought. They are pretty similar across the board, main difference being that Asik is a significantly better rebounder. Mozgov isn’t going to be the defensive difference-maker Asik is, but he can definitely make the kind of leap Asik has made if he is given more minutes somewhere.

I don’t envy LD when it comes to those decisions. Clippers have a lot more talented/useable size. And yeah, there is such thing as useless size. Just look at last night’s game. Mullens and Haywood are 7 footers are they not?

On the one hand I can see LD wanting to put Horford on Griffin because he is heavier and stronger than Josh. On the other hand Griffin is so quick and has mad hops…this means you want Josh on the job. I see potential foul trouble for Al…

And then you still have to deal with that other jumping jack – DeAndre Jordan. When ZaZa is in the game he can put a body on him I guess…or a forehead if necessary.

Slimjr,

I hear ya, bro.

LD still doesn’t know what to do with Josh, and it shows.

I know we have guards/shooters and what not, be we have to establish an inaide presence. Josh trumps Al in this department… when he can get it in his head to stay down there for a while . Al is not as quick on his feet (but not slow)and is less elusive than Josh.

lD should be finding ways to get Josh the ball as he cuts towards the basket. Or find ways to isolate him in the post. And then he should convince Josh to keep at it. But this isn’t what LD does. Either that or Josh isn’t listening. I say it’s both, but that’s gonna fall on the coach.

Josh has one 20 point game this season and is shooting a low 42 percent. That smells of too many long shots and too few short ones. Design and decisions, I’m afraid.

CP3 cannot stop Jeff Teague’s incredible quickness off the dribble. He could have his way?

Bigs must roll to the rim as Teague generates opportunities all night long..

After his 26-point, 13-rebound performance against the Bobcats last night, Al [Horford] was quoted as saying, “You can’t stop ‘The Boss.’” Then, I said to myself, “Al [Horford], you know that [phraseology] is just too “dope” [and street and urban] for you; that [vernacular] ain’t even your style.” Somebody, please “hip him [Al Horford] up on game.” [SMH]

Anxious to see how our frontline plays against Jordan and Griffin. IMO, Josh and Al are the keys to this game. If we rebound, box out, do not allow any second chance points, we will win this ball game. Al Horford needs to attack the same as he did against the Bobcats. No jump shots at all by Smooveless.
Stephen A Smith of ESPN stated that the Clippers are better than the Lakers right now.

This game will be a real test for coach Drew. How will he manage his bench 2-night? If he is smart, he will play Lou and Morrrow early, Ivan should get about 20-25 minutes 2-night!!! Hope he starts Zsa Zsa 2-night.

“Do not understand all the fascination about this below average, injury prone center Mozgov. So are those coaches in Denver so unprofessional that cannot see what a future great star they got? Amazing…”

He has suffered minor injuries yes, look at his game log he has never missed a large amount of time and even that is deceiving because he also got a lot of DNP-CD. Also George Karl has known to have a love jones for less skilled players and substitution patterns that would put LD to shame. He starts Koufos over McGee as an example and they pretty much split the 48 minutes.

How would you all like adding Jeff Green to the team next summer? He may be a bad fit in Boston and they may be willing to move him this summer….

JaeEvolution, I always disliked the way he plays – just too slow. He is already 26, and I doubt he can improve. He is an example of useless size. There are other comparable centers available who can be had for a vet minimum. Actually, I would prefer Benson over Mozgov any day of the week…

Mozgov is a scrub. I do not want that dude close to my basketball team. Jeff Green was a big time baller when he was with OKC. Jeff would be an excellent starting 3 for us provided we move Josh and sign a true center.

Who’s starting tonight? We should start the same group regardless of who we play, then adjust, COACH DREW. We can not always be on our heels. Be aggressive Larry!!!
