Magic at Atlanta Hawks: Home and healthy

By Michael Cunningham

The Hawks are back at Philips Arena to play the Magic tonight after a 2-2 West road trip during which a virus claimed several casualties among players and support personnel.

“It’s good to be home,” Jeff Teague said today after shootaround. “We were on the road for what felt like forever.”

“It’s good to be home, it really is,” coach Larry Drew said. “I think the guys are excited to be back home and I expect them to come out and play with a lot of energy.”

Atlanta should have all players available tonight except for maybe DeShawn Stevenson.

“I think everybody is OK,” Drew said. “DeShawn has been a little bit under the weather. He didn’t play Friday [at Sacramento] because of his back and yesterday he had a bit of the virus. He looks like he’s feeling a little but better but I don’t know his status until game time. Other than that, everyone is good.”

Stevenson is the latest Hawks player to catch the bug. It also affected Josh Smith, Al Horford, Devin Harris and Lou Williams during the trip.

Teague said there were other victims, too.

“It was tough,” Teague said. “I think everybody got a little piece of it. You had a headache or a little stomach ache. But guys fought through it against Portland. Josh and Lou were on IV’s in the back so to see them come out and play well, it was impressive.”

The Hawks (4-4) play seven of their next eight games at home, leaving only for the short hop to Charlotte on Friday. In addition to playing the Bobcats (4-4) and Wizards (0-8) twice during that stretch, the Hawks get the Magic (3-6), Clippers (7-2), Cavs (2-8), and Nuggets (4-6).

“You are just happy to be back home and able to take advantage of the opportunity ahead of us,” Horford said. “It starts tonight and that’s what we are focused on. . . . We have still yet to put together a very solid game all around. We are working on that. Hopefully we will get it started tonight.”

Al Harrington (knee) and Hedo Turkoglu (hand) are out for the Magic. J.J. Redick is questionable to play because of illness.

If Redick can’t go, E’Twaun Moore likely would start with rookie DeQuan Jones in line for more minutes.

“Obviously he’s a terrific shooter,” Drew said of Redick. “He can really stretch it to the three. It would be a big blow to them [if Redick can't play] but, in this league, one thing that I have found out when key players are out it gives [other] guys an opportunity to play and a chance to show they deserve minutes. On the other side, there could be a sort of mental letdown when you play against teams that lose key players. The thing I challenged our guys with is irregardless of who plays tonight we have to come out and be a team on a mission. We can’t have any mental letdowns.”

Notes

  • Drew on where the team stands with integrating the new players: “I think we are making progress. I don’t think we are there yet. We are still kind of feeling each other out. I think they are starting to pick up some things. With all the new faces, one thing I’ve told myself in these type situations I’ve got to be patient with it and allow the process to happen. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do. Still, I’ve been shifting my lineups some just to make sure we go into a game and match up and not put ourselves at a disadvantage. We still have a ways to go. Our guys seem to be committed to being patient as well.”
  • Horford: “I think we are still in that process of getting familiar with each other. But the good thing is I think defensively people are starting to understand our coverages and everybody’s role and where we are supposed to be on the floor. We are picking that up fast.”
  • Teague: It’s getting better every day. We are still trying to feel out where guys are going to be in spots at certain times. We haven’t played together that long. It’s getting better. Practice time really helps.”
  • Teague on the reason for the team’s improved rebounding at Sacramento: “Smoove [Smith] and Al getting on us about the guards and other people cleaning up stuff. They just told us to get in there and get rebounds so we’ve been preaching it. At Golden State, they were beating us up in offensive rebounds. Guys came in the huddle and said, ‘We’ve got to get rebounds,’ and ever since then we’ve made a conscious effort to get rebounds and everybody gang rebounds.”

Russell I like Josh and Al. Butr when Josh starts launching there has to be someone on the floor, OR ON THE BENCH that will set him str8. This isnt a Josh vs Al vs Teague thing. Wtf?

3 of Josh’s jumpers are outside the paint. But I dont put all the blame on him. LD insists on playing him at SF, and I dont think Josh has had a good game at SF.

The Hawks are actually running something resembling a motion offense to start this half.

Plays like that is why LD wants Josh to lead the break. It works sometimes.

Meanwhile, Josh misses the FT. 0-3 tonight.

I would have loved to see Korver at SF with JJ being double teamed (and Josh being a good passer as well).

Teague was on the SG for stretches in the first half too. LD had him guarding Redick. I guess he figures if he has two small guards who don’t get through screens well, might as well play the more athletic one at SG.

Time to blow these tricks out of the water. They have less talent than any team in the league.

“Korver’s defense won’t remind you of Shane Battier, but I’ll be danged if he isn’t fundamentally sound and giving the effort very actively.”

He isn’t Bibby or Jamal, true, but I wouldn’t get too carried away. Dude is giving his man a ton of space and still gets beaten off the dribble a lot. I give him credit for trying, though.

terrell :Russell, and by that you mean? Your pg has to be the leader on the floor. Period!

Well yes and no.

Yes, you want a point guard who can quarterback the offense and lock down on defense…

and No

teague is not capable of either. so Teague is not nor should be a leader on any team this has championship aspirations.

Of course this is only happening because Al is moved to power forward pushing Josh to SF… destroying the team chemistry taking a very good power forward out of his game and range for… Al?

Lethal Lou isn’t particularly explosive going to the basket but he’s a free throw artist. A much needed dimension to this team.
