Hawks handle Kings … again

The Hawks ended a four-game road swing out West with a 112-96 win over the Kings – Atlanta’s ninth consecutive win against the Kings.

From the AP report:

Kyle Korver scored 22 points, reserve Lou Williams had 21 and the Hawks beat Sacramento 112-96 on Friday night for their ninth consecutive win against the Kings.

Atlanta shot 55 percent, including an 8-for-15 performance from beyond the arc, while recording a season-high point total. The Hawks outrebounded the Kings 42-37 and had 24 assists.

“We can be a real up-and-down team, we know that,” Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. “We preach moving the basketball. We emphasize sharing the basketball and we did a really good job of that. Guys were finding each other all over the place and when we play like that we’re a fun team to watch.”

This year LD really wanted to start Devin Harris but Teague has outplayed him.

I thought Teager was responsible for Brooks 3pt barrage late in the second quarter…

But this should not be the reason to not play him for the ENTIRE second half.

AJ,

Only thing an NBA head coach has to use as leverage is playing time. How else would you address a TO every 4 minutes from your PG?.

So do you disregard the fact that your PG is also shooting 70% from the field?

We all can agree that LD hardly limits minutes for Josh, Al, Jamal (almost any other player) when they are playing terribly (and we have seen all those guys with 5+ turnovers). And although Teague had all those turnovers, he was your leading scorer, and it’s not like he was having a terrible game. He is still learning how to be aggressive and take care of the ball, and get others involved.

Plus if you look at the turnovers, I think they were mostly from him driving trying to get off a shot (ball slapped away), or trying to force the issue on the break (turnovers which you have said is not as bad if its from trying to play fast).

If Teague is your starting PG, I don’t see why LD can’t give him more minutes to see if he will play through it.

AND THE HAWKS SHOULD GET SOMETHING IN RETURN EQUALY. 2 FOR 2 PLAYER DEAL.

OB, what did it cost us last night? And doesn’t LD get criticsm for always focusing on scoring over other important aspects of the game? So FG% trumps TOs for a PG?

LD inserted Lou and he did a tremendous job running the point in the second half. Al got his touches, Josh got his touches, Korver stayed hot, the offense was cooking, TOs were low, the team won on the road comfortably… but LD gets the heat for not playing Teague after 5 TOs in 19 minutes. SMDH.

AJ, if it is all about player development, why did he miss the 4th quarter in the last game? The man had 15 points in the first half. After about 5 games, JT0 was leading the team in scoring and assist. Since his time has consistanly be getting cut. I really believe they want to keep his nimbers down so he will not sign a big contract.

ag, Teager also allowed a few 3-pointers from Brooks (if I remember correctly it was 3 or 4). And this amounts to 9-12 points given away. The main problem of Teage is lack of concentration. In some moments he plays as a great star, but sometimes (less often lately) he is like a scrub. So he has to learn to be consistent all the time he is on the floor…

sameba,

It is hard for a young guy to be consistent and learn when the coach hates him. Drew is constantly telling one thing and showing the other thing. He says he want Teague to attack, but when Teague does great at attacking he is the first one to be benched and comes out with a pass first type of play. Tell me why that is? Drew is mentally telling Teague that he wants him to change. Just about every game this season was that way. You can’t learn if the teacher “coach” is horrible and has no clue what he is doing.

Do you say that it is incorrect not to play Teague? So do I. Please read my post of 1:03 pm…

The point I was stressing was that one should not overrate (as well as underrate) any players contribution. E.g., it was Teague’s responsibility that at the end of the second quarter Brook hit several 3-pointers which resulted in Hawks loosing their lead. Therefore, I think it was a right decision (also taking into account 5 TO’s) to bench Teague at that moment. However, I repeat, he should definitely play in the second half.

sameba,

When I was taking about benching early was about him getting benched in the first. He only have 1 turnover, 6-7 shooting, 13 points. Every time Drew takes out Teague early in the first he almost always changes the way he plays. Also, not all the turnovers when he was brought back in were his fault. Do you think Brooks would not have made those 3s if someone else was guarding him? When someone is fast and shooting hot it is hard to stop them. If I am correct the thing that stopped Brooks was his Technical.

We are looking at to different pictures here, I am looking at the start of the game and you are looking at the 2nd half and on. But Like I said, the biggest problem with Teague’s inconsistency is Drew playing games with him. And Yes, Teague should have seen time in the 2nd half, would have been a good idea to try a Teague/Williams back court the 2nd half.

I disagree with the part of your post concerning Brooks barrage – he had made 3 shots back-to-back and hat was Teagues responsibility. One can make 1 shot, even 2, but 3 all together?! When you say he would make it with someone else defending him… well, I would expect Teague to play high level D everytime he is on the floor. I wish him having great future and was very disappointed on his D at the end of second quarter.

LD’s substitution patters were discussed and are being discussed all the time here and I think this does not concern only Teague. And yes, I cosign with you on your 2:36 post.

The hawks do well against teams with weak centers or powerforwards masquerading as centers. Wins like this is a yarn for me. How boring. so you can beat another team that is weak at center. Gee….great.

Do that consistently against teams that have a center while leaving Josh at powerforward and get a real center to handle the post and I will be more excited.

JT played well early, and in the 3rd quarter made a few mistakes. He was sat in favor of Lou this ended up being the right choice by Ld we won. In the future if this circumstance came up again and Lou did not work out then I believe Ld will make the adjustment with JT. I am not trying to defend anyone but his subs. paid off. We saw more Ivan and less Tolliver, Harris was ineffective so he sat. I thought this was the right move in hind sight, they even showed JT on the bench on TV. Now will this mess with JT psyche mabe but he is a pro, he got paid either way. I like Jt and hope him and Lou could play on the court togeather.

Najeh Davenpoop

Teague missing the 4th quarter wasn’t a huge deal, because Lou was playing well. Teague getting pulled 8 minutes into the game when he was carrying the offense was idiotic. He should have played the entire first quarter.

Najeh Davenpoop

November 17th, 2012
4:55 pm

Put it this way — in the middle of the 4th quarter, when LD called a timeout as Sacramento made a little run, he came back out of the timeout leaving Lou in the game. Why? Because Lou had the hot hand and was making plays for himself and others. That was fine. So why shouldn’t the same apply to Teague 8 minutes into the game when he has the hot hand?

I don’t know LD so I won’t go as far as to say he hates Teague or whatever, but he clearly treats certain players differently for whatever reason. His job is to win games, and playing his 3rd best player as many minutes as possible gives him the best chance to do so.

Rusty, LD is not a very good coach. At the same time, not every decision he makes is a bad decision. Not everu substitution is illogical and not every play call debateable. IMO, a TO every 4 minutes from your PG needs to be addressed m(immediately).

Regarding the Boston series, I am too old to remember the details of his coaching. It wouldn’t surprise me if he made some boneheaded decisions. At the same time, I never for a moment believed the Hawks were going to win that series.

The Will to Win!

The difference between Josh and Pau, besides the obvious age gap, is that Josh is hungry to win a championship versus Pau has already won a few. Fire and Desire is one intangible that I would hesitate to part with.

See Lamar Odom, who was forced in a trade to the reigning champions of Dallas and, just simply laid down like heart broken biatch. I say NO to Pau. Re-sign Josh!

The new CBA rules strongly discourage any player who wants and will get a 5 year deal from leaving the incumbent team. Not only are the raises with the new team smaller but the new team can only offer a 4 year contract. IMO, it is the player who needs to make sure that he does what is needed to get that 5 year deal from his current team… it is his one path to a 5-year and more lucrative deal.

Sameba, it means Josh wants to be here. He lives in L.A. in the offseason but he wants to play basketball and be successful in Atlanta. By getting rid of Joe’s contract, it clears the way for Josh to be the highest-paid player and centerpiece of the team. Instead of building around Joe, Danny Ferry decided to build around Josh. Josh likes that. If Kyler is correct, Smoove will be here for a long time. He doesn’t want to go out like Dominique.

The problem is Teague’s weaknesses are magnified and others are not. LD is quick to call out Teague but never calls out Horford or Josh Smith. Hell Smoove is still jacking up long jumpers and not passing to the guards on the break but LD ain’t trippin over it.

Just like I said Teague saved LD’s azz last year. He raised his level of play at the point guard position and was one of the main reasons we got a number 4 seed last year.

LD needs to start appreciating what Teague brings to the table because next year he might be gone.
