Atlanta Hawks game thread: Horford, Harris out against Warriors (updated)

Vivlamore reporting from Oakland.

A stomach illness is still wreaking havoc on the Hawks’ roster during their West Coast road trip. Al Horford and Devin Harris missed Wednesday’s game against the Warriors. Both were unable to take part in the team’s morning shootaround and were declared out well before game time.

“Hopefully, both guys will be ready by Friday,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said of the final game of the trip against the Kings. “We are taking all precautions (to ensure no one else gets ill).”

Josh Smith and Lou Williams were questionable right up until game time of Monday’s victory over the Trail Blazers. Both played and scored in double figures.

There was plenty of hand sanitizer making its way around the team workout at a San Francisco health club, as the illness also hit security and media-relations personnel.

Zaza Pachulia started at center for Horford. The Hawks activated backup center Johan Petro. He has been inactive all six games this season due to a sore back. Drew said there was a possibility Petro could play behind Pachulia and Ivan Johnson.

” I think he’s had enough (practice time),” Drew said of Petro. “We wanted him to spend more time out on the court and getting up and down. He’s been with us on the trip and prior to us leaving Atlanta he got quite a bit of court time in trying to gather some conditioning.

“I’m hoping to get him some time but I’ll take a very close look at our matchups and see if it makes sense.”

Horford leads the Hawks in points scored (89) and rebounds (52) and is tied for the team lead, with Smith, in points per game average (14.8).

The other starters will be Jeff Teague, Kyle Korver, DeShawn Stevenson and Smith.

Smith said he was feeling much better after a day of rest.

All-Star nominees

Teague joined Smith and Horford as the Hawks representatives on the All-Star ballot released by the league Tuesday. While both said they are honored by the nomination, their main concern remained the season at hand.

“I’m just worried about the season right now and finding the cohesiveness to this team,” said Smith, who has never made the All-Star team despite approaching career numbers of 10,000 points, 5,000 rebounds, 2,000 assists and more than 1,000 blocks. “I’m a firm believer that as the team succeeds I succeed. So, I’m worried about what we are doing as a team. I not worried about the All-Star team.”

Horford is a two-time All-Star as a center. He now is grouped together with other centers and forwards as the league changed the voting distinction to front-court players.

“I really don’t pay too much attention to it until that time comes around,” Teague said of his nomination. “I’m more happy for Josh and Al. I’m just happy to be part of it. … I just trying to go every game, win every game. If it happens, I’ll be grateful for it but I’m just going game by game.”

Teague entered Wednesday’s game with averages of 14.3 points, 7.2 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals through six games.

“I think he definitely belongs in the same breath with a lot of the point guards in the league,” Drew said. “Jeff is really is blossoming into a really good point guard. He brings a speed to the game. He can make shots. He has a good in-between game. I think it’s time that he is mentioned with some of these other point guards.”

Playing on the road

Players and coaches often talk about the team-building benefits of playing on the road. However, the Hawks could learn a more valuable lesson with this early season four-game road trip, played in six days.

Drew was concerned prior to the season that his team would learn to win in a hostile environment. They got a lesson on the first game of the trip, losing their composure late in a loss to the Clippers. The next night they were again challenged in the fourth quarter but pulled out a victory over the Blazers.

“I think it’s a good thing to go on the road this early, to experience some of these lessons to be learned early, so that we can understand and grow as a team,” Drew said. “We didn’t feel good about our performance particularly late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter against (the Clippers). … Against Portland, the difference was we did not lose our composure. We maintained our composure.”

Etc.

The Hawks have forced 17.8 turnovers per game, fourth best in the NBA. Former Warriors coach Don Nelson, elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, was honored in a pre-game ceremony. … The Hawks end their road trip Friday at the Kings and return home where they will play seven of their next eight games. … Several Hawks players visited the island of Alcatraz during an off day Tuesday.

I am sitting here watching the last game vs Portland and cannot understand why Larry Drew plays Anthony Toliver so much. This dude is a turnover machine and plays out of control. We should have kept Damion James! How can you lead the team in the preseason in rebouds and get cut. Maybe, just maybe, Larry Drew will be the next one to get CUT!

Additionally, WHY DRAFT ROOKIES IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PLAY THEM? Jenkins and Scott need playing time, SIT TOLIVER and let the young ones play. ALTLANTA HAWKS have a bad history of developing rookies into NBA players. Not good if we plan on being a Championship caliber team.

I’m one of the first dudes to scream at Josh while watching this team on TV, but he played really solid basketball the other night

-Smart passes
-Hesitated and passed up jumpshots
-Made his one free throw

We need that Josh EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

Oh why am I even saying this? 8+ years in the league and we still put up with his BS each year

Lets hope that the “Smoove” does not go crazy with that “I am a SUPERSTAR mentality” and play to his strengths which are; rebounding, blocking shots and put backs. This is the kind of game where a team can get embaressed by stupid play.
I hope Al will be able to play, I know a lot of folks are not too fond of him but he is a lunch box kind of guy. This is a game we can win with effort, smarts and hustle but it is also a game that can be lost by selfishness. LD needs to bench stupidity but that’s asking a lot from someone who has no clue.

I would like to see the rooks play also. There is not a lot to lose by playing Jenkins and Scott but LD blew it with Jordan Crawford and almost blew it with JT. Coaching is not one of the HAWKS strong suits.

This team has sidelined a lot of potential talent over the years, no doubt.
Morrow better get lots of PT this kid is wasted with what he is given at the moment.
Resting theory proved to be BS when LD plays Devin “injury” Harris every game and sits younger more productive players.

If we cant win today we have big problems considering the talent on this team.

The Warriors’ 3rd leading scorer is Carl Landry, who comes off the bench and is off to a great start this year. I hope LD comes to his senses and plays Ivan on him instead of Tolliver.

Also, with Bogut out with an injury (how shocking), we get to see more of Buddy Grizzard’s boy Festus Ezeli.

8 games into his first season as a non-Hawk, here are Marvin’s stats per 36 minutes:

47.1% FG%, 85% FT%, 25% 3FG, 13.3 ppg, 5.3 reb, 1.1 ast, 1.1 stl, 0.9 blk, 1.6 TO

Here are Marvin’s career per-36 stats:

45.0% FG%, 80.7% FT%, 32.6% 3FG, 13.6 ppg, 6.3 reb, 1.6 ast, 0.9 stl, 0.5 blk, 1.4 TO

Still a long way to go in the season but I think it’s safe to bet against him breaking out and showing the “star potential” that the Hawks “suppressed” over the years.

“So here’s the question…what if neither guy is on the roster after next summer? What if one is and the other isn’t? Will “fans” of the one who leaves follow him forever?”

Haha. I’m sure many of us will, particularly in Josh’s case since he is a hometown player and has been here for so long, but neither one is the kind of transformational, superstar-caliber talent that should be considered indispensable.

David Lee 7 boards, Harrison Barnes 6 boards.

Josh 3 boards, Zaza 2 boards, Hawks’ entire bench 3 boards.

Hawks are 28th in the league in rebounding entering this game. I seem to remember someone the Hawks had in training camp who was really good at rebounding.

“The Hawks were 4-2 last season without Joe and Al, with wins over playoff teams Orlando, Indiana, and OKC.”

Good point. However, can you tell me what Josh’s line were in those games? I don’t hate Josh, in fact, I think he has the potential to be one of the best players in the league if he would just play within himself. That’s what I meant by the Jekyll & Hyde. He can totally carry a team when he is playing well, however, more times than not, he plays out of control and outside of his strengths. Rod would like to have us believe that it is all the coach’s fault because the offense requires Josh to set up outside a lot of the time. I think that is bs. There are many times where you can see Josh loafing and give up on plays. No, I don’t get upset when he takes the jump shots at the end of the play clock, and last season that was the case usually when Joe was eating up the shot clock and then kicking it out at the last second. Maybe that produced bad habits for Josh, but for whatever reason, he doesn’t adjust his game when he could dominate in the post. It’s just frustrating watching him play, when if he would play as hard as Lebron, Dwayne or Kobe, he could be a difference maker in every game for the positive. However, he would rather blame the officials when things don’t go his way and take the whole team down with him.

I just don’t understand why we can’t just play through Josh on the block. He’s out most talented player and when he is on the block, the game opens up for everyone, especially KK on the wing for open shots. Put JT, KK and Morrow on the floor and post up Josh and let him go to work. It really isn’t that difficult.

Just an aside, this game is an example of why I don’t like Korver playing a lot of minute or really even being on the team. The HAWKS wasted most of the 4th quarter offensive possessions trying to get Korver open for a 3 opposed to trying to get the ball inside to Josh! On the defensive end Korver was getting beat off the dribble consistently whoever was guarding him and really didn’t help on the boards. I think Korver has played well this season, but I just don’t like how one dimensional he is, especially as a starter!

Much depends on PG. Today our PG did not play well, and you see the result. Team was sleepy, players had difficulties in finding their respective roles, no one could drive to the basket, there were lots of drives to our paint etc… One remembers what J.Smith said about win in OKC – he called Teague a head of snake, and attributed the win with his excellent play. So here we are, we need at least two good PG’s to be competitive.
