Vivlamore reporting from Oakland.
Al Horford, Josh Smith and Jeff Teague are the Hawks representatives on the NBA All-Star ballot the league released Tuesday.
Horford and Smith are 36 front-court nominees in the Eastern Conference. Horford is a two-time All-Star as a center but the league changed the process this year to group all centers and forwards together. Teague is one of 24 nominees at guard in the East. In all, 120 players both both conferences are represented on the ballot.
Balloting will be held until Jan. 14. Fans can vote in a variety of ways on a daily basis, including social media sites. This year’s All-Star game will be held in Houston on Feb. 17.

Astro,
Agreed on Royce White. He has a serious issue hopefully he can overcome it… Oh yeah, I will take him in a Hawks uniform. Just thought I would say that b/c we do have an open roster spot…

Heeeeeyyyyyy DMB ….. Your words look good to me. Royce White is an intriguing situation. This guy w/ his body type & skills could eventually play 4 different positions. During the last draft I was hoping DA HAWKS could get him so badly …. but didn’t realize the full extent of his problems. But I don’t want to trivialize his situation …. but DMB couldn’t he be sedated & fly ?

slim,, there are no real front runners in the nfl. do you really see one? three qb’s down with concussions and all.
all teams are very flawed except maybe the houston team with a qb the falcons sacrificed for ya man mv7. oh the humanity for desperate falcon atl fans to have to see what they sacrificed for an inferior but more exotic qb. oh the humanityx2! shameful if they have to see the texans get the crown with their qb they gave away for your mr drama. heh heh, chew a bit bro, chew.
yup, bad line but 2 is getting it done with mirrors having his best game in a loss only because they couldnt get one yd on the ground, a catch wasnt made and a cb takes a stupid penalty in red zone. rare they and hc dont manage close games better than that. another chance in two weeks.
anyway, back to babll, ya man woody and the knicks are getting love babee. heard greg anthony say if healthy they are the best in the east, then heard john sallley say they are definitely better than the heat and are built to take them out and no one in the west can keep track. stakes are high for woody, oh the humanity!!!

8-1 Texans look real good..Just solid in every phase of the game..
Looking forward to that Falcon-NY Giants game.. The Giants have been struggling lately and it has got New Yorkers scratching their heads! Lets hope it continues when they meet the Falcons.
Matt Ryan is playing great ball! They have to figure out those 4 and inches though..It may comeback to haunt them again if the adjustments are not executed properly in the trench..
Yea Woody and the Knicks are starting to look like a serious contender..Who would of thought?
Raymond Felton is a pretty good point guard himself..Did he not go #5 in the lottery behind the #2 pick buster Marvin Williams in 2004? he dropped 21 pts tonight…

Great thread on a Hawks blog coming up with a new nickname for Josh Smith. Suggestions include: Brick, Clank, Dumbazz, etc. I wonder if he thinks he is a good shooter. He won’t be in AllStar game until he quits shooting outside of 10 feet.

2 for John Drew,
Howard will not sign with the Hawks this summer. It’s not even worth thinking about it.
There was a very good article on sports.yahoo about the attraction of the bright lights of LA, the buzz, the celebrities, the opportunities in several fields.
Maybe, just maybe, Howard MAY consider coming home for his last contract, however, I very much doubt that he has any real feelings about ATL which may drive him on that direction.

The article was done on the night Howard played his first exhibition game for the LAL and it focused as well on the attraction of the LAL as a franchise, full of history, successes, …

I don’t see any Hawks players making the 2012-2013 Eastern Conference All-Star Team.
Potential All-Star Centers
Chris Bosh
Kevin Garnett
Joakim Noah
Tyson Chandler
Brook Lopez
Potential All-Star Forwards
LeBron James
Carmelo Anthony
Paul Pierce
Luol Deng
Potential All-Star Guards
Dwyane Wade
Rajon Rondo
Deron Williams
Joe Johnson
Jrue Holiday
Monta Ellis
Brandon Jennings
The Hawks are currently in the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference Standings. Unless the Hawks drastically improve in the standings and someone on the Hawks’ roster improves his individual statistics significantly (e.g., points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, etc.), I don’t see a Hawks’ player making the 2012-2013 All-Star Team.

Those players listed above either have better stats than any of the Hawks players placed on the 2013 All-Star ballot or their respective teams have better win-loss records than the Hawks [team] or both. I tried to post the above comment last night. For some unknown reason, I had technical difficulties.
P.S. The 2013 All-Star ballot features a starting lineup of two guards and three frontcourt players. Theoretically, a [2013 All-Star] starting lineup could feature two guards and three forwards which also means [to me] that a center may or may not be named or selected to the 2013 All-Star Team.
If they want to make the 2013 All-Star Team, Al Horford, Josh Smith and Jeff Teague have to “put in [some major] work.”

Defensively, the Hawks have held all of their opponents, except 1, under 100 pts and under their seasonal averages. To put their DEF efforts into perspective, they’ve held 2 of the NBAs top 3, 3 of the top 7, and 4 of the top 13 NBA scoring teams under 100pts and under their seasonal averages.
We have suffered more than our share of turnovers and scoring droughts, usually in the 2nd half. I believe the high turnover rate is due to having too many players not knowing their defined roles, due to Drew’s round robin approach to his starting lineup. It prolongs the ability of players development of chemistry and continuity.
Also, when the team hits a scoring drought, or is getting out rebounded, Drew’s insistence on using struggling 3pt shooters to try and solve both problems only extends the problem. It’s not like he doesn’t have better options sitting on the bench, like IJohnson(rebounding) or AMorrow(scoring/3pt shooting) instead of his beloved veteran preference ATolliver.
It looks like we have the same dynamic with Ferry and Drew that we had with former GM and HC BKnight and MWoodson. Both GMs stated from the beginning they wanted to build through the draft and develop their young players. But both HCs were married to their VETERAN PREFERENCE approach and had no interest in developing or playing younger players.
Where Woody would set his limited rotation and clearly define each players role, LDrew is doing the complete opposite. One was too set in his approach, while the other is too lax and flexible with his.

High-Sider, there are no centers on the ballot this year, and Deng is unlikely to sneak his way on the team again if the Bulls continue to be closer to .500 than the top of the conference.
The Hawks will get an All Star if they are a winning team near the break, which I think they will be.

After taking a look at Teague’s overall numbers, a case can be made for him being chosen to the Allstar gm by the coaches, but not by the fans. Here’s what I mean.
MPG-14th(29.0) All other PGs average over 30.1MPGor more.
PPG-10th(14.3)
BPG-7th(.33)
APG-6th(7.2)
SPG-5th(1.83)
FT%-3rd(92.9)
FG%-1st(53.1) Only one other PG(RRondo) averages 50% or better and none average over 48.5%.
3P%-1st(.500)
Most of the PGs rated ahead of him are their teams #1 or #2 scoring options, while he’s our #3. We also know he’s got a lot more potential and room to improve, while most of the others are at or very near their peak.

Have you compared Deng’s current stats to Josh Smith’s and Al Horford’s [current stats]?
Luol Deng – 18.9ppg, 7.4rpg, 2.9apg, 48.6%FG%, 22.7%3PFG% and 75.8%FT%
Josh Smith – 14.8ppg, 8.0rpg, 3.2apg, 39.8%FG%, 14.3%3PFG% and 20.0%FT%
Al Horford – 14.8ppg, 8.7rpg, 2.5apg, 57.1%FG%, N/A3PFG% and 69.2%FT%
I was just saying, if the current trend continues until the All-Star voting is closed, I don’t see any Hawks players making the 2013 All-Star Team. For the record, there are centers [and forwards] on the ballot this year; they [centers and forwards] are just listed as “Frontcourt” players. Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah, Kevin Garnett and Roy Hibbert are centers for their respective teams. I “get” where you’re coming from though and I stand corrected.

I know we are not the best team in the league, but this roster, and the way they have played, definitely has been exciting. My observations –
- Korver has been better than advertised. I love the way they have him running off screens to get open jumpers a la Richard Hamilton in his Pistons days.
- Lou Williams and Josh Smith take some of the dumbest shots I have ever seen. The offense tends to become stagnate as Lou pounds and pounds the rock. Reminds me a little of Joe. I won’t even get started on Smith…
- I know everyone on the blog has been all about cutting Tolliver and Stevenson, but both guys are playing pretty well. They are making timely shots and playing good defense.
- Get Morrow into the game more. I know he can’t guard my grandma, but he makes buckets when the gets opportunities. Put him in the game with a passfirst point guard, like Teague, and he’d have more chances at open shots.

Al 15 feet of the basket and he will pass it to the player furthest away from the basket. Reminds me of Joe when he does that. I’m not sure why we’re looking at his shooting percentages when he doesn’t even want to shoot. he defects his shots off to Korver. When we talk about Josh shooting too much also talk about Al passing too much instead of taking the shots. He’s getting drilled on defense. When we talk about free throw, none is more important than the ones Al missed in a deciding game in the playoff by an All-Star. Shooting is one aspect, the other aspect is defending. Portland went on a run when Josh was out . Al was abused in the paint. Al needs to be criticized for his robotic post moves. Josh ( who was sick) shooting 39% was on the bench when the Blazers made a run. Why did they make a run with Al ( shooting 57%) and Teague ( shooting 53%) in the game and Josh out? WHy did Drew bring in Josh to close out the game. Shows you who the leader is. I voted for all three EVERYDAY. Stop comparing our players and vote for them everyday

Besides this Blog has been a love fest for Allstar AL..
I think most of the regular bloggers have accepted Al for what he is. A solid player, who has his limitations, and is better suited for Center (not PF).
But unlike you and others, we don’t hold it against him because he was selected as a multiple all-star. Being chosen an all-star does not change the type of player he is. And its not like Josh doesn’t have his fans on here who think he can do no wrong.
As for your Knicks, enjoy the early success. Because (imo), once Amare comes back, the team will start losing again

“Royce White is having a fallout with the Rockets, could probably get him for cheap to fill the SF role.”
Danny Ferry is rumored to be one of the GMs who would not consider drafting White due to his emotional issues. Now that White is waging a PR war against the team that drafted him (even though they are treating him no different than Montejunas, who bypassed the Olympics to get to training camp early and try to make HOU’s rotation this year), I imagine Ferry is pretty comfortable with that position.

Me too… I was sad to see him come off the boards before the Hawks picked. I knew that he would drop because of his emotional issues, and I hoped he would drop all the way to the Hawks.
He’s a lot like Anthony Mason. He’s too slow to be a rotation small forward and not explosive enough to be an elite power forward, but he handles the ball and passes like Magic. I’m not even exaggerating. I saw him pull off some passes in summer league I had never seen before.
Not saying I don’t wish he was a Hawk. Just saying I don’t think Ferry will ever take a chance on him.

As far as All-Star selections are concerned, I doubt Josh and Lou are going to continue playing as badly as they have thus far and the Hawks are going to improve. So far they’ve beaten the defending Western Conference champs and might have beat the Heat if LD wasn’t terrible.
Thus, I believe the Hawks are going to feast on sub .500 teams like they did last year and be well above .500 by the All-Star break. I believe the Hawks will get two All-Star nods and they will be Josh and Teague. I don’t think Horford will ever make another All-Star team due to the elimination of the center position.
