UPDATE: I’m told that Josh Smith and Lou Williams will play tonight vs. Blazers.
Vivlamore reporting from Portland.
Josh Smith and Lou Williams are questionable for tonight’s game against the Trail Blazers. Each was sick Monday. While they participated in the team’s walk-through practice at the Rose Garden they were sent home early.
Coach Larry Drew said he will wait to see how each was doing later in the day before making a decision on their playing status. I will update you on their conditions prior to game time.
In other items:
* DeShawn Stevenson will play, and likely start, against the Blazers at small forward. Stevenson sat out Sunday’s game at the Clippers. Stevenson, a 13-year veteran, told me he did not play because of the back-to-back games situation.
Drew confirmed Monday that he does not want to overwork Stevenson and his aging knees.
“We are going to play it by ear but for the most part he won’t be playing back-to-backs,” Drew said. “One thing we really want to make sure we do is keep a close eye on him and his knees. There may be some cases where he may be able to play some back-to-backs. Right now, it’s out of the question.”
Drew said he planned ahead with the team’s schedule and wanted to use Stevenson against the Blazers.
“On this particular road trip, I thought tonight’s game was a game we really need him,” Drew said.
* The Hawks will likely start a lineup of Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver at guard, Stevenson and Smith (if he is able) at forward and Al Horford at center. Anthony Tolliver will start at power forward if Smith can’t play.
* Anthony Morrow also did not play Sunday, one game after he scored 17 points off the bench against the Heat. Drew said he had a determined rotation for the Clippers game and Morrow was not in the plan. Once the game got out of hand in the fourth quarter, he didn’t want to use Morrow in such a situation.
“I’m going to play him when I feel it’s a game that I really want to use him in,” Drew said. “Going into last night’s game, I already had my mind made up on the rotation that I did want to use. I didn’t want to throw him in there when the game is out of reach. I don’t want to do that.
“There are going to be some games when I’m going to be using him, particularly in needing his offense. We started with the big lineup last night. We got good mileage out of bringing Lou (Williams) and Devin (Harris) off the bench and trying to keep a big three position-wise out on the floor.
“I couldn’t find minutes for him in last night’s game. I am aware of the productivity he has brought when he’s been in there. He’ll be playing more.”
* Drew finally got a chance to use rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott Sunday with the Hawks trailing by 20 points late in the game. They played the final 3:48 of the contest.
“Both guys, I’ve always said, bring an NBA skill to the table,” Drew said. “I understand they are going to be a little rusty because they have not been playing. I still love my rookies. I think both of those guys are going to find minutes and have a really bright future in this league.”
Scott said he was happy to make his NBA debut. His only regret was missing his two shot attempts. Jenkins finished with six points, going 2-for-4 from the field and hitting two free throws.

“Going into last night’s game, I already had my mind made up on the rotation that I did want to use..
That makes no sense. There is a guy on the bench who may have made a difference, but LD didn’t play him because he had his mind made up prior to the game?
For a guy in the last year of his deal, I thought he would have been making better decisions, and coaching with more urgency. SMH

MsDee,
With Horford’s deadly jumper and productive post moves,.
Horford’s post moves are still a work in progress. And although I am a big fan of Al, the fact is we saw Josh step his game up for almost an entire season last year (when Horford was injured). We don’t know if Horford can do the same without Josh Smith for an entire season.

LOL @ his comment on Morrow.
Amazing.
See, this is why I want Jenkins starting from the jump. If Drew is going to pull stunts like these, he may as well throw Jenkins right into the fire, and see if he will sink or swim right from the start.
If he sinks, he’ll have reason not to play him. If he swims, he’ll have NO reason not to play him
. . . unless he does Jenkins like he does with Ivan.
This team is just too stocked with some of the same parts. The usless parts need to be on the pine, and the unknown parts need to play, to see exactly what they can do.

All I have to say is “wow at his Morrow comment.” He told everyone right there that he does not want to do in game adjustments. With a roster like this you can’t be picky on who you play before you actually see what they bring to the table, This is going to be one LONG season if Drew is not fired.
By the way, is Drew really thinking about starting Tolliver against LMA if Smith doesn’t play? This guy really has no idea about matchup. LMA is going to destroy Tolliver.

There is no way someone really said that, “i had my mind made up”. I am really dissappointed as a Hawks fan that the head coach has this mentality, Anthony Morrow and Jeff Teague in the backcourt would be money and there isnt one person who has seen any games this year who would beg ive to differ. Tolliver is not productive but Ivan is and this guy plays Tolliver twice as long as Ivan. Devin Harris looks far worse than Teague did when he was backing up Mike Bibby. LD refused to give JT minutes then but gives Harris minutes on the regular. People wont show up to games if this continues not to mention the Hawks wont win many games. LD gotta go but Danny already knows that, gonna be a long season

It is very common that many Young Women are attracted to 40 Plus Older Men; coz Older Men are usually more Stable and Mature. If you want to make your life more adventurous, I would encourage you to take a try on AgeGapMatch.com .This Is Where Things Start To Get Better. where you can meet plenty of classy, intelligent, and adventurous girls who like 40 Plus Older Mature Men. “22-6 Woody”
The big difference between the Hawks and Knicks coached by Woody is that you have a center in NY who can defend the rim and while Tyson Chandler is not considered an offensive threat he does clean up all the garbage with dunks and put backs. You can’t say that about any of the centers that have played during Woody’s and Larry’s tenure …….Al, ZaZa, Twin, Shelden, Petro, Randolph Morris just to name a few.

“The Hawks wont survive with both, but at least Al plays within his game instead of trying to be a superman, when in reality he’s more like one of Captain Planet’s planeteers (Josh Smith).”
Why exactly is “playing within his game” automatically considered a good thing?
Sure, if he was a role player, it would be a smart move for him to just stand around and play his role. That is what earned Bruce Bowen a long career even though the only things he could do were hit corner 3s and play man to man defense.
But Al is not a role player. He is, at worst, this team’s 2nd best player and is much more talented than the Bruce Bowens of the world. Why is it good for him to “play within his game”? That dude needs to take matters into his own hands and start looking for his own shot. You know that move he occasionally makes when he puts it on the floor, drives past his man, and throws it down? That needs to happen at least five times per game.
At least for this season, Josh and Al are the centerpieces of this team. Neither one should be deferring to anyone. When Al gets a chance to score, he needs to grab it by the throat and seize it, not “play within himself”.

Danny Ferry deserves some blame for this Tolliver fiasco, too. There was no reason to bring him on when the hole on this team was at small forward, not power forward. If he was going to burn a roster spot on a SF, he should have gone after Dominic McGuire or kept Damion James, not given a guaranteed deal to a tweener in Tolliver who doesn’t do anything particularly well.

OB, Josh has ofen started seasons slowly. In fact, i could recall several seasons when it seemed like he used his birhday (early December) to get things ramped up. I honestly believe that he will get his free throw shooting at least back in that 6 range again… hopefully sooner than later.
Teague has been terrific this season. Teague and Al have clearly been the most consistent players… at least when Horford’s teammates remember to feed him the ball more than 10 times/game. Josh is too talented and too audacious to go down in flames in the last year of his contract…. he’s trying to pull the old “banana in the tail pipe” joke on his haters… I ain’t falling for it.

That may have something to do with it, but this team’s big men as a whole (other than Ivan) don’t seem to understand that more than one of them can be in or near the painted area at a time. I was watching the Bulls and Timberwolves the other day on WGN and they kept running a play when Boozer got the ball around the free throw line and threw a bounce pass to Noah who cut to the basket along the baseline for a dunk. With two good passing big men in Josh and Al, this team should be killing it with the high-low passes.

Josh starts off slowly? I do appreciate a good laugh and that one is a hoot. He needs to stop with the dumb play or LD needs to bench him but this time I think Ferry is hoping and praying that the “Smoove” impresses a team so he can dump him but that’s not going to happen. I doubt if there’s any team in the NBA that would do it. Remember Philly took a broke Elton Brand over a young energetic, jumping jack Josh. As far as playing out of position that’s an excuse. i am convinced as much as i hate it that the asg, because they dont deserve it, are getting more of their money’s worth with ld and were good businessmen in their decision. i really dont think you can argue these points. you may not like reality, a lot of people dont as well but it is what it is.

Why is Larry Drew always shuffling his lineup? It’s almost like he’s not confident in his system. A good team has the same offense and defense system every game. He always talks about finding an identity but it seems like he has no idea what identity he wants. His identity changes with each game and each opponent. No wonder the Hawks are so inconsistent. How does a guy score 17 points one game and then the next game, he’s not even part of the game plan? It doesn’t take a doctor to realize that somethings a little off with Drew. Why can’t we get a coach like Popavich? I can only dream.

Al, Josh and Joe Johnson always perform against .500 and below teams…..let’s see how
Josh and Al perform against playoff teams and contenders, or give them the BOOT like Joe.

Guys, this third quarter and early fourth quarter shows that Lou Williams isn’t a POINT GUARD! Devin Harris going down, or not being available was huge. We are in need of a third point guard even more so than a small forward.

Devin going down really messed up our offense. And the their defense shut williams down when they went on that run. He only could get 7 shots off.

It is still incredibly early, but so far Lou is averaging a career high in turnovers, a career worst in FG% and assist/turnover ratio, and is tied for the fewest FTA/game in his career since he started getting real minutes. Hopefully things pick up for him soon.

If the Hawks don’t stop the Blazers on this upcoming possession, this game may very well come down to Josh shooting free throws.

Now, that you’ve mention it, I’m surprised the Blazers didn’t go with the “Hack-a-Smoove” down the stretch. Poor coaching on Stotts’ part.

“Poor coaching on Stotts’ part.”
No kidding… giving LD a run for his money.
