Vivlamore reporting from Los Angeles.
The Hawks will go with their big lineup at the Clippers today, starting Jeff Teague and Kyle Kover at guard, Josh Smith and Al Horford at forward and Zaza Pachulia at center. According to coach Larry Drew he was concerned with the early matchup with Clippers center Deandre Jordan.
“Matchup wise it will do us much better to go bigger on Jordan at the start,” Drew said. “I don’t want to put ourselves at a disadvantage.”
Jordan, the 6-foot-11 center, has 41 points and 19 rebounds in the past two games. He also is fifth in the NBA in blocks.
The Hawks will still have to run. The Clippers have tied a franchise record by starting the season with six straight 100-plus point games.
“They are a team that can really get up and down the floor,” Drew said. “Our whole mindset on going on the road is that we have to play our style but we may have to make some adjustments as far as being able to control the tempo. We want to run, get out in the open court and get easy baskets but at the same time we have to be a little more selective with our shots. To not allow them to get out and run, we have to do a good job of getting back and getting matched. Their bigs really run the floor so it will be a challenge for our bigs to really get back and get matched.”
On the issue of shot selection I asked Drew about Smith, who was very candid following Friday’s loss to the Heat about being more efficient offensively, and whether he has spoken to the forward.
Smith is 20 of 52 ( .385) from the field and 2 of 10 (.200) from the free-throw line in his three games this season.
“We had a brief talk,” Drew said. “We got on the plane yesterday and we had a brief talk. We had another just before this game. Yeah, we have to be more efficient offensively. I thought going back and watching the Miami game we certainly had our opportunities. We had some breakdowns defensively but more importantly when you play a team like Miami you have to be efficient offensively going down the stretch.”

Let’s just hope Josh’s struggles become the motivating factor behind him finally becoming a more efficient player. He needs to stop all of this becoming an Allstar, or trying to become the team leader, or trying to carry the OFF load etc. There are no super stars on this team, nor anything close to one, just a whole lot of individual talent across the board.
He needs to quit trying to lead fast breaks and give the ball to a PG and fill the lane. He needs to give that eratic jumpshot a rest. If he can’t back his man down, he should pass it out rather than settling for a jumper. Then he can establish the position he wants without the ball in his possession.
Personally, I don’t think Josh works hard enough without the ball to get the position he want’s. He doesn’t seem to know how to seal or hold off the defender near the lane. Therefore, he tends to come out too far from the basket and then tries to dribble his way into the position he wants.

Not sure about the big lineup for this game. Jordan is big but he’s not a good post up player. And Josh may have problems posting up Butler although Butler is smaller than him….

What we saw tonight will be an ongoing event. I think we are headed for the “LOTTO” and that’s a good thing, the HAWKS will also have a ton of money.
Keep Lou Williams, Al, Zsa Zsa, resign Teague, the young players Jenkins and Scott will have a year of practice time, resign Ivan and with the departure of the “Smoove” and LD the HAWKS future looks bright, very bright. What’s happening is a good thing and the rest of the dead weight will be gone by seasons end. I’m having a ball watching the unraveling of POTENTIAL

I might point out some negative aspects of the team and certain players, but I really like this team and all of its players. What I don’t like is the often Woodson like approach LDrew has taken when it comes to the utilization of our players. While Korver will never be a solid defender, he’s certainly not the DEF liability he was before being exposed to the Bulls and their emphasis on playing DEF.
I don’t think any of those fans who insisted on claiming the Hawks would be unable to play DEF without Marvin and JJ, can say that now. This team has played some very good perimeter DEF, which has limited the foul trouble along our frontline. There’s very little doubt that Ferry will try to make a trade or 2 by the trade deadline. We need a more traditional SF.
Some feel we need a SG, but all we really need is to use what we have, and that’s AMorrow. Like I’ve said before, he gives us everything Korver gives us plus more speed, quickness, athleticism, and slightly better DEF. Right now, our best starting lineup would be
SF Korver
C Horford
PF JSmith PF
PG JTeague
SG AMorrow

Through four [regular season] games played, Josh Smith [aka J-Rough] is shooting 0.143 [1-of-7] from 3pt. range and 0.143 from the free throw line [2-of-14]. OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!!!!!
Remember, Josh Smith missed the game vs. the Thunder.

No max contract player on Hawks…
No leadership either…
Without JJ, rudderless…
Those guys shined b/c JJ drew so much attention…
Now, he does it for BK…
His individual line isnt much…
But he still draws the double and best defender…
And they’re winning…
Unlike some imposters I know…

Josh Smith is shooting consistent from the 3pt. arc and the FT line – consistently “turrible.” “J-Ruff” should never shoot 3s unless [the games is] at the end of a quarter or half. He should never be more than 16 feet from the basket on the offensive end.

JJ was way over rated, the cancer on this team is LD.

Yes, this lineup is the best – it allows to have two shooters simultaneously, good speed and allowing more spacing for our would be AllStars Al and Josh. Well, at least it gives them more chances.
Actually, the only good thing that happened today was appearance of Jenkins. He finally got NBA experience and had nice 4 minutes…

I hear where you’re coming from and I know it’s [still] early [in the season] but don’t you think 13.6ppg by Joe Johnson is [a tad bit] disappointing considering his [lucrative] salary?

Keep showing us your true colors Josh. I love it. DF, don’t wait too long to deal Josh. His value is only going to drop the way he’s playing.
