Atlanta Hawks: Clippers 89, Hawks 76

Vivlamore reporting from Los Angeles.

Lob City turned into Turnover City for the Hawks.

Atlanta committed a season-high 22 turnovers, 10 in the fourth quarter, en route to an 89-76 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers Sunday at a sold old Staples Center. Many of those turnovers led to uncontested layups as the Clippers went on a 26-5 run between the third and fourth quarters. Devin Harris hit a 3-pointer late in the third to put the Hawks up by one point, 60-59. Then 10:24 later, the Hawks trailed by 20 points, 85-65.

Hawks coach Larry Drew said his team lost its composure.

“I thought our guys followed our game plan for two and a half quarters,” Drew said. “Midway into that third quarter, it’s like we totally forgot what had put us in the position we were in. As I told them, on the road we have to be consistent, we have to be on the mark with all of our coverages.

“We knew coming into this building we knew one of the things we needed to do was take away momentum plays. We did that for the most part, but late in that third quarter we totally abandoned what was good for us for two and half quarters.”

The Hawks had just seven points and nine turnovers in the first 8:39 of the fourth quarter.

“Fourth quarter was a disaster,” Zaza Pachulia said. “It was full of mistakes. It’s sad that you are playing so well for three quarters and one quarter you throw it all away in the ocean. This should be a good example for our team.”

The Hawks (2-3) lost their second straight game and the first on a four-game West Coast road trip. Josh Smith led the Hawks with 13 points, but they came on 6-of-14 shooting. He missed all four free-throw attempts. For the season, Smith is 26-for- 66 (.394) from the field and 2-for-14 (.143) from the free-throw line.

Al Horford and Lou Williams each added 11 points for the Hawks.

“Those guy played the passing lanes,” Smith said. “They are a gambling team. Give credit to them, the plays they gambled on they succeeded. That kind of gave them momentum in that fourth quarter which hurt us.”

The Clippers (5-2), winners of three straight, placed six players in double-figure scoring. Blake Griffin had 16 points followed by Chris Paul (15), Caron Butler (13), Eric Bledsoe (12), Jamal Crawford (11) and Matt Barnes (10).

Free throws were hardly an issue for just Smith against the Clippers. The Hawks combined to shoot 7-for-16 from the line. In fact, the Hawks had two more 3-pointers than free throws. On the season, the Hawks are shooting 54-for-81 (.667).

“We couldn’t make a free throw,” Drew said. “You have to make free throws on the road. That’s the bottom line. .. You have to step up, concentrate and knock it down.”

For the first time this season the Hawks’ bench failed to outscore their opponent’s bench. The Clippers’ reserves held a 35-32 advantage.

The Hawks did manage to hold the Clippers under 100 points, snapping their streak of six games to start the season over the century mark.

The Clippers got physical with the Hawks late in the game and it had an impact, according to Drew.

“We got sped up with the pressure and then we let the officiating bother us a little bit,” Drew said. “As I told them, we can’t play any road game with the mindset that during that game there are going to be calls that they might not like. That cannot affect their play. Tonight, we let some calls get us a little out of character. You can’t play like that on the road. You have to be solid. You have to be focused. We lost focus at the end of the third quarter.”

The Hawks road trip continues against Portland Monday night.

Notes

* Rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott made their season debut. They entered the game with 3:21 remaining after the Clippers took a 20-point lead. Jenkins made 2-of-4 shots to finish with four points. Scott missed both his shots.

* Guard DeShawn Stevenson did not play. The veteran was held out because the Hawks play again Monday and the plan is not to play him in back-to-back games.

* The Hawks started their big lineup of Jeff Teague, Kyle Kover, Smith, Horford and Pachulia. It was the first time the team duplicated a starting lineup this season.

* Center Johan Petro was inactive for the fifth straight game.

* The sellout was the 55th straight for the Clippers. The Staples Center also hosted a Lakers game later in the evening.

Bad coaching. How Morrow scores 17 last game, and doesn’t see the floor this time is amazing to me. How Teague stays on the bench while that run goes down is amazing to me.

When there is no movement and chemistry on the offense, even if you have LBJ in the Hawks uniform he would have very big trouble I believe…

“So obviously you did not watch the game. You must not have seen the play when Al got his pocket picked by Blake Griffin, and did not even bother trying to get back to prevent the dunk Guess that play went unseen. He was not arguing with the refs, so what was his excuse?”

I did not watch all of the game, so I did miss that play, but the point I was trying to make is that in every game I watch, I see Josh complaining, playing lazy defense, shooting the team out of games and playing completely undisciplined ball. Today was just another example of his play taking the team from being competitive with a chance to win to fumbling away possession after possession through bad shots and turnovers. He is a complete moron that thinks more highly of his abilities than he should. Al rarely displays that type of selfish play. You can make excuses all you want for Josh, but there has been absolutely no growth in his ability to play according to his strengths over the past 5 years. There is a reason why the players and coaches have picked Al for the all-star game, and it’s because of the way he plays the game, both intelligently and with his hustle. Josh takes the air out of his teammates with his continuous poor decisions, Al sets them up for succes by setting picks, hustling, and playing within himself. Everyone around that league knows this, which is why you see Josh left open time and again to take those ill-advised jumpers.

Josh is basically aiming his FTs. All of those days practicing 20 foot and 3 point jumpers should’ve been spent practicing FTs. That way, when he does get fouled, he could knock down 70% – 75% of his attempts.

As for the rest of the lineup, it’s almost like Drew is still conducting preseason experiments with this team. We have too many marginal shooters for a guy like Jenkins to not get his chance to produce, just like all of the other “shooters”.

Or maybe the plan is to play some of these guys to increase their trade value.

Who knows?

Korver, 30 minutes this game?

Somethings wrong. You are telling me that Korver is playing good enough basketball to be in their almost as twice as long as Louis Williams? Korver is a three point specialist…..that’s it. I don’t understand this.

There’s just so many things to comment on. But it’s a continuous thing. Things that have been mentioned for the past 3 years. Nothing has changed. Even though we may be rebuilding, we are not this bad. We are playing horrible basketball.

Hawks have a game tomorrow, so Drew wants to save Stevenson for that game.

The DNP-Back-to-Back is the same thing he did to tmac, and tmac got pissed about it. That tells you this Drew’s idea of saving the guys that can get hurt easily.

So did Josh Smith lose this game for us? From what I saw, the game was getting out of reach before Josh started being the bad Josh. You stated you did not watch all of the game, so what are you basing your statements on. I personally rarely see any player hustling more of the defensive end of the court on this team more than Josh. Maybe Zaza.

” There is a reason why the players and coaches have picked Al for the all-star game, and it’s because of the way he plays the game, both intelligently and with his hustle.”

Incorrect. That actual reason that he was selected was because he was listed as a center in a conference with no centers except for Dwight Howard.

SPARTACUS-You obviously don’t know you can’t say anything negative about Josh or ROD FROM CP will go nuts and defend him to the end, because to him Josh can do absolutely no wrong. The turnovers, missed shots, the repeated launching of illadvised jumpshots, arguing with the refs and losing focus, trying to play PG by running the break rather than giving it to the PG and filling the lane, and trying to force too many shots, are never ever his fault.

He also feels the same way about Jamal Crawford. He’s taken player worship to an entirely different level. And if you don’t see his chosen player through his delusional eyes, he accuses you of having the same affliction over any other player you might mention. It’s truly weird.

I’m still sick of LDrew. He’s decided he’s going to sink or swim with certain players no matter what, whether they’re providing what’s needed most or producing consistently or not. I remember how under Woodson whenever ALaw or JTeague would have a good gm, Woody would always follow it up with a DNP CD, just like Drew has done with Morrow.

It’s like he’s afraid Morrow will upstage Korver and force him to make a change if he gives him an honest chance. It’s the same BS we saw him do with Teague and Bibby. What’s the deal with Petro? We haven’t heard a thing about his status, or when or if he’ll be able to play.

There is no justification for all of the stupid things LD does.

Ken Strickland

Here’s one of the main reasons we’re losing and why I’m holding LDrew responsible.

KKorver/AMorrow
MPG 24/14.5, FG% 32.5/61.5, FT% 40/100, 3PT% 30/100, RPG 3.3/1, APG 1.0/0, SPG 1/1.5, TO .75/0, PPG 7/11.

ATolliver/IJohnson
MPG 16.5/8.7, FG% 26.3/66.7, FT% 0/.33, 3P% 30/0, RPG 2.5/3, APG .3/0, SPG .8/.3, BPG .8./.3, TO 1.7/1.3, PPG 3.3/5.7.

For whatever reason, known only to LDrew, he insists on consistently giving the most mins to the least productive among the players he has to choose from. I wonder how long we’ll have to wait before we see another JJenkins sighting? Jenkins earned 2 FT makes while Korver made 1 technical foul, scored 6pts to Korver’s 7, and did it all in just over 5mins compared to over 24Mins for Korver.

Im starting to believe that Josh is sorry, there is nothing wrong with Josh at SF problem is he hate working the post so he settle for jumpers in the second half.

LD try to implement for Josh to stay in the post but for some strange reason by the second half he is jacking up jumshots, iF Josh continue to play SF from out side of the arch then the big lineup is useless, because there is no advantage on offensive side, but defensively Josh at SF will make this team better defensively, but allround Josh must play in the paint.

I based my statements on being a huge Hawks fan back from the mid 80’s until this day. I watch every game I get a chance to, and my statements aren’t just about today’s game, but the pattern I have observed in Josh’s game since he came into the league. Like I said, I think Josh is an extremely talented player who has absolutely no clue how to play the game and make others better and tries to do too much every time LD tries to run the offense through him. If he would stay on the block, he could dominate most games, but he refuses to play to his strengths, and therefore hurts the team with his selfish decision making. What’s the definition of insanity? The Clippers got physical with the Hawks late in the game and it had an impact, according to Drew.

Is LD giving Harris minutes so they can shop him? Is LD intentionally holding JT0 back this year becasue it is a contract year?

I did notice both Al and Josh not get back on defense after they made turnovers. That is a coaching problem (NEVER GIVE UP ON ANY PLAY)!! JT0 went to contest the shot (he is great at blocking shots from behind), but CP3 dished on an man going down the lane.

I saw an interesting stat. JT0 was one of 5 players who lead their team in pts and assists. Even though he left with -7, each time he left the game, the Hawks were only down 2 points.

We really need to stop all this Al/Josh bashing. Yes, both should be playing much better. I do see a little growth in Josh posting smaller players, and I agree Horford should be more aggressive with his shots.

I would blame coaching. I actually watched the game again and noticed – nobody cutting to the basket. We don’t have a play that we run pick n roll (except of ZaZa)- it is pick n pop!

Also, the players who are playing the best are getting the least minutes. Why is JT0 the first sub? Why is Korver starting? Why is Morrow getting DNP’s?

If Jenkins is also a one trick pony (I think he is more athletic than Korver and a better ball handler, why not give him run?

Questions for a couple of players:

Al Horford
“Without Joe on the team, many people expect you to take a leadership role on the team – especially in scoring. In all three losses, you took 10 or fewer shots. What adjustments will you make to get more shots?” (If he tries those political correct answers, ask questions about offensive rebounding or cutting to the basket).

No Coaching. Pure and simple.

The rest is landscape.

There are no defined roles, all this tinkering with line ups, etc…

Every single time we play a C which any size, LD will cater to Horford and plug Zaza in and shift everyone down.

If you are going to play Josh at the SF you would need to instate a system whereby he would get all touches down low, backing down the SF in ISO plays.

But that is incompatible with the Princeton offense which is based on perimeter ball rotation, so when you play the Princeton offense with Josh at the SF slot, you will see him less and less in the paint and more and more doing what he should not do.

Stop protecting Al from “bigger Centers” because that will cause negative results down stream on both the SF and PF slots.

Where is that incredible PF which Horford is supposed to be? Griffin can’t defend a cardboard figure and Horford did not make a dent.

Play guys where they are known to produce with any consistency:

Josh at the PF slot where he has a speed and athleticism advantage
Al at the C slot where he has a speed and athleticism advantage
Zaza as the paint’s energy guy/bruiser off the bench.

And stop messing with Teague and Ivan and give them the majority of the minutes at the PG and reserve PF slots.

Harris should be strictly used as backup PG (10/14 minutes) and rotate the shooters (Korver/Morrow at the SF and Lou/Jenkins) depending on who is hot.

Use Stephenson as the designated defender (SG/SF) and Tolliver as the end of bench reserve as stop gap player depending on injuries/production/fouls.

It’s not rocket science but for LD is way beyond his reach.

Chris V… I know you are the beat writer and you have to have a good rapport with the team and the staff, but you need to ask some tough questions.

“Kyle Korver has started only 10 games since ‘06-07. Does he really give the Hawks the best chance to win?”

“Most starting PG’s in the league are playing 35-42 minutes per game. Jeff was leading the team in scoring in assists. Why is he the first substition, or (more politically correct), do you plan on increasing his minutes?”

“Anthony Morrow has played very well- especially against the Heat. Did he get hurt in the 4th quarter against the Heat?” (If the answer is no) “Why didn’t Morrow play in that big 4th quarter, or even get a DNP against the Clippers?”

I have a lot more and I know you can’t ask him all the questions we want answered, but that certainly is a start.

ROD FROM CP-I’m with you on the bashing of LD, but he’s really brought it on himself with his TOO MUCH LIKE MIKE WOODSON approach. Why is is so doggone important to them to play an over the hill or under performing vet over a rookie or less experienced player?

Where did they get this idea that experience will trump talent and/or potential no matter what? When you look at the lack of consistency and/or production we’re getting from Tolliver, Korver, and Stevenson, we certainly wouldn’t suffer any loss of production or consistency by playing Tolliver, Jenkins, Scott or Ivan.

At the end of the last blog of the production between Ivan and Tolliver, and Korver and Morrow. The results were truly revealing. Drew has consistently chosen to give considerably more mins to noticeably inconsistent and less productive veteran players like Korver, Stevenson, and Tolliver. He’s also chosen to all but ignore less experienced, but considerably more productive players like Morrow and IJohnson.

JJenkins can play, but Drew isn’t about to give another rookie a chance to force him into changing his VETERAN PREFERENCE rotation. Once again we’re seeing the JTeague vs MBibby protection plan at work.

Najeh Davenpoop

Not playing Jenkins is more defensible than not playing Teague in 2010-11. Jenkins is a shooter who is stuck behind two veterans who have established themselves as premier shooters in the league. Teague was stuck behind a guy who was a turnstile on defense and as one-dimensional as could be on offense, a guy who had seen every aspect of his game erode away. There is a huge difference. I’d be a lot more p-ssed about Jenkins not playing if either Korver or Morrow was not on the roster.

Ken,

Woody had many defects as a Head Coach but at least he:

- was consistent with his rotations and with the roles he had for his players;
- instilled a degree of accountability which made Josh play his best season close to the basket without shooting long jumpers and 3 pointers;

LD thinks he can tinker with the line up and play according to match ups and he ends up creating a huge mess.

I am not a big LD fan, but last year he would sometimes correct his mistakes along the way. He did play Ivan a little more last night.

Would like to see Petro get into the rotation. Hard to imagine that he could be much worse than our frontline.
