Vivlamore reporting from Hawks practice.
A couple quick notes to pass on from today’s workout.
* Coach Larry Drew said he has yet to decide team captains and will take 7-10 days to think about it. In the meantime Al Horford and Josh Smith, both on the captains committee last season, will serve in the positions.
* Drew again declined to reveal his starting lineup for Friday’s season-opener against the Rockets. “I’m going to sleep on it tonight,” Drew said with a coy smile. “I will tell you tomorrow that I’ll be sleeping on it tonight.”
* Center Johan Petro (back) did not practice for the third straight day. He worked with the team’s training staff on the side. “He is getting better,” Drew said.
* Forward Mike Scott returned to practice after missing Tuesday’s workout with flu-like symptoms.
* Drew sat down with each player to discuss their role with the team this season. “I really wanted to wait until we got our roster down before I did that,” he said. “We had a good dialog.”
* As part of the offensive practice Wednesday, the team continued to work with an 18-second shot clock to encourage pace in running through options for each set.
* The Hawks will not practice Thursday. Drew is giving the team some rest after four straight practice days ahead of the season opener.

Chk out this article:
Hawks Practice Report: Atlanta Prepares for Rockets; Teague expects Win.
The Hawks took to the practice floor for an extended session Wednesday as they prepare for their opener against the Rockets Friday night. Johan Petro (back) sat practice out once again and it appears that he is a lock to be one of the Hawks left off the 12-man game day active roster. The rest of the team participated fully in a full contact practice where the emphasis was on tightening up their defensive sets.
“[We were] brushing up on stuff that we’re going to use as a staple all year, particularly defensively,” said Larry Drew. “Defensively, we [went a little harder]. We did push it because we covered a lot with the defense as far as some of the schemes and techniques we will have. Offensively, the focus was pace.”
Drew also met with players before practice to talk with them about their roles with the team and his expectations for them.
“I met with each player individually this morning to explain roles on the team. I really wanted to wait before we got our roster down before I did that,” said Drew. “I met with each and every guy individually and had a good dialogue about what I expected from them and it went very well.”
Anthony Tolliver and Jeff Teague talked briefly after practice and discussed a little of what coach told them about what he wants to see out of them, while not giving away anything about rotation.
“He told me to just be Jeff Teague. Same thing he told me last year, I’m just gonna go out there and play my game and do what he asks,” said Teague. “He just told me to be me, I’ve been me for the last couple years and I’m gonna try and get better every year.”
“He just told me to keep doing what I’m doing. Just continue to play defense, hit open shots, and play the game the right way,” explained Tolliver.
As for Friday night, everyone is staying pretty tight lipped about the rotation, lineup, or their preparations for the Rockets. When asked about the starting lineup LD said with a wry smile, “you know what; I’m going to sleep on it tonight. I’m still trying to toss some things around and I’m not 100% sure.”
I asked Teague about the Rockets and he answered, “We’re focusing on us. They’re going to be a good team. We know that. They’ve got James Harden and Jeremy Lin, great players, but we’re focusing on the Hawks. If we go out and do what we know what we can do, we should get the win.”
The Hawks cancelled Thursday’s practice after a long session today and will have everyone fresh for shootaround Friday morning before 7:30 tip-off at Philips Arena.

Horford should be the only team captain. More than likely, he is the only player guaranteed to be a Hawk all year. Second captain, if you had to have one, should be Lou Williams. Every other player (Smith, Teague, Harris) could be traded at any point…

Drew should allow the players to choose the captain(s). He should simply decide how many captains they get to select and leave the names to the players. And no need to broadcast starting line-ups to the public… is anyone going to make a ticket purchasing decision based on if Tolliver or Korver is starting at SF?

James Harden is balling for the Rockets. I seen where some has compared his trade to Joe Johnson but one thing I like more about Harden is his ability to get and finished at the rim over Joe. However, we will see if he can be a true #1 option for a team. So far in the 1st half of his 1st game with the Rockets, he sure looks like a legit #1 option…

Harden’s not stupid. He’ll take that one big contract right now . I really wonder what it is that Houston is thinking. Playing next to Lin is not like playing to Westbrook. And they’re paying him like he IS Durant, not like he’s playing next to him.

@ Melvin . . . the thing Harden does better than Joe, is attack the paint HARD. Yeah, he can shoot his underhanded floater type shot, but he can also go hard enough to the rim to draw fouls at a high rate.
James Harden is the best thing that ever happened to Jeremy Lin, because now he can just concentrate on playing strictly PG, instead of trying to be a mini-superstar like he was in NY.
9:11 left in the 3rd quarter . . . here are Harden’s stats
25 points
4 rebounds
7 assists
10 – 17 FG
4 5 FT
1 – 4 3FG

It’s one game, against a terrible team. Joe has had several games like the one Harden just had. Harden is a very good player and is worth his contract, but let’s not get carried away. He has a long way to go to prove that he can be a #1 option on a contending team. I still don’t see the Rockets making the playoffs this season, no matter what kind of numbers Harden puts up, and I definitely don’t see them becoming a championship contender unless they add another “foundational player” as Daryl Morey says.
This is going to work out pretty nicely for me in fantasy basketball as a Jeremy Lin owner, though. Harden is going to add at least a couple of assists and a few points to his FG% this season.

The Hawks should not lose to the Rockets though. Our frontline is much better than theirs.
As for Harden, he’s been showing signs of doing what he did tonight for a while now. And he’s flat out taken over games for the Thunder, when Durant or Westbrook didn’t have it going.
At worst, Harden is JJ. At best, he may be a healthy Tracy McGrady.

Harden is not better than JJ, Harden plays no D and only goes left, lets see how he gets his when the double team comes. Marvin will have a good year, the problem with the Hawks was not JJ or Marvin, it was a lack of depth, no other wing scorer, Marvin could have been if Josh did what he was good at, rebound and play D. The Coaching and Front Office is what’s killed the Hawks and that trend will continue.

Teague or Lou either one can stay between JHarden & the basket.
I imagine he can post them up,
but I doubt he take them off the dribble consistently.

Yes, Joe is a better defender than James all day.. Joe was given the task to be the [Man] in Atlanta and guard the oppositions best scorer on most nights.

Northcyde,
I think Stevenson will see alot of time guarding Harden. However, I do think Harden is a more dynamic score then Joe ever was but we have to see him do it for an entire season before we can compare him to Joe and god forbid a healthy TMac.

4 years $38 million for Taj Gibson, 4 years $41 million for Jrue Holiday, 4 years $48 million for Ty Lawson. My guess is Teague falls towards the lower end of that spectrum, somewhere around 4 years $40 million (which I believe is what Mike Conley got a couple of years ago).

Harden is nowhere near the athlete T-Mac was in his prime. Skill level is similar, but athletically T-Mac ran laps around Harden.

We are spending all this time talking about former Hawks, and yet for some reason our current Hawks don’t play until Friday. Is there any other team in the league that waits that long to open?
That isn’t nearly as infuriating as the Hawks scheduling two games on Sundays head to head against the Falcons, though. Amazing that they still can’t figure this out.

If we were going to give Teague one of these kind of contracts I’d go after Tyreke Evans instead, and go all in on CP3 as our future backcourt.

I know it’s only the second game, but the Lakers need to figure out how to jump start that star powered engine. They seem so disoriented on both offense and defense. I think it was Marv Albert who said that Pau Gasol is going to thrive in this offense with Howard now. I would disagree with that. Howard is 2nd option on the team now. And if Gasol thrives then Howard gets hit. I just can’t picture how this is gonna work with Howard demanding the ball just as much as Gasol. It was different with Bynum as he was 3rd fiddle to Gasol. At first it seemed like such an epic idea. But now that I’ve seen two games ( I know) it seems such a mess with both Gasol and Howard clogging up the lanes on offense. I believe for this team to be efficient, Nash is going to need to be in charge of the ball almost 75% of the time. I don’t see that happening.
Again way to early to tell, but the first two games were a complete mess.

With Harden going for 37 last night, the starting lineup Friday will be Teague, Stevenson, Korver, Josh and Horford. This lineup is certainly not our best lineup.
Stevenson is going to get torched. This is a perfect example of going with our young player (James) – instead of Stevenson.

It’s funny because Milwaukee has an offensively challenged, hard nosed rebounding wing just like James in Mbah a Moute and that dude makes 5 M’s per year. We couldn’t even give James a non guranteed contract, why again?
