Atlanta Hawks: Anderson, James waived (updated)

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks waived guard James Anderson and forward Damion James Saturday, the final roster cuts of the preseason, to reduce to 14 players ahead of next week’s regular-season opener.

Forward Anthony Tolliver made the roster as the only non-guaranteed contract. His contract would become guaranteed if he remains on the roster on Jan. 10.

The Hawks go into the season with one less player than the maximum of 15 allowed by the NBA. By keeping one roster spot open, the Hawks have the flexibility to add another player via trade or signing. Also, keeping Tolliver adds veteran depth to the bench with guard Jeff Teague and center Zaza Pachulia both nursing sprained ankles. The Hawks had until 5 p.m. Monday to make their final cuts.

Tolliver had the best preseason numbers of the final three vying for a roster spot. He appeared in all seven games, with two starts,  and averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 18.7 minutes. His size, at 6-foot-8, gives the Hawks options at both the small and power forward positions.

James, a former Hawks draft pick, appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 6.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 19.2 minutes. He played 21 minutes, with two points, in the Hawks’ exhibition finale against the Pistons Friday night.

Anderson appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 2.o points and 0.7 rebounds in 10.7 minutes. He played eight minutes, with three points, against the Pistons.

The Hawks, off Saturday after last night’s 104-88 loss to the Pistons, open the season on Friday at home against the Rockets. The Hawks ended the exhibition season at 3-4, with all wins at home and all losses on the road.

I guess that’s about what stupid Larry Drew would do cut James a stupid horses butt.

Sorry that James didn’t make the team, but this year is about evaluation anyway. It’ll be fascinating to see Ferry put his plan into place.

First wrong move by Ferry. James could have helped this team off the bench.

LD doesnt set the roster. He can’t cut a guy. He can’t sign a guy. Ferry has the ultimate say-so on how this roster looks.

I don’t even care that much about James being cut, but I really don’t think Tolliver can contribute much.

There’s absolutely nothing about DStevenson that would make anyone choose him over DJames after an assessment of their in camp and exhibition production. James showed himself to be a far superior rebounder and passer, as well as a bigger and better defender and more consistent scorer.

I don’t know how much of this BS is due to LDrew’s preference for vets, contracts issues, or both.
With the decision to cut down to 14 players, there has to be an intent to sign someone else soon. Regardless of whether that is the intent, we’re down to Korver, Stevenson, Tolliver or Josh at SF. It’s pretty obvious that Drew chose OFF over DEF and rebounding if he chose Tolliver over James.

During training camp and preseason Tolliver’s extra inch in height certainly didn’t help him become a better rebounder, defender, hustler, or passer than James. But, what’s done is done, so we have to move on.

Ughhghg !!!!.i was 38 hot when we draft him n trade him then we got him this offseason I was happy n confident that he is a major contributor to off rebounding def play aggressive rim attacking etc. noww im highly doubtful unlesss unless ferry has his eye on a sweet fa pickup but for the $$ damion james woulda required along with his skill.set I doubt very seriously we get a better player pound for pound dollar for dollar I mean dj (damion james) is better than most the fanbase is aware of …smh we shall see what happens……

Great…another limp body to ride the bench and perform poorly when needed while we cut potential talent and contributors (James, Benson). How many 6′8-6′9 forwards in love with shooting jumpshots do we need??

Fire LD, get a better coach, trade Morrow or Korver along with Petro and Tolliver, get some true bigs in here with a solid SF. I can deal with an undersized backcourt, but a jumpshooting, fastbreaking, so-so defensive team can only do so much. Maybe Ferry has his eyes on us bottoming out and drafting talent…

As good as James was in preseason and as good of a defensive player James is, the bottom line is that he would not have received PT this season for the Hawks….In essence, this was a smart ” financial” move by Ferry and the Hawks staff……Anderson, on the other hand, never had a chance end of discussion there……I think PETRO should be limited to STREET CLOTHES for the whole season…..The Hawks will regret the JAMES DECISION one day,,,but not for this season !

i have stated how i felt about drew. i belive coaches especially players who played in the nba like their team to be a reflectionof them them and drew is doing that prefrring offense over defense

Once again, the Hawks use the “financial excuse” to not assemble the best team possible. Until they get out of that mindset, and find ways to either make more money at the box office, or simply start making moves that are in the best interest of the team on the FLOOR, we’ll never advance any further than where we are now.

So we got rid of our best rebounding and defensive sf? I’m not saying James was a star but I don’t see how a team that desperately needs rebounding gets rid of a guy who rebounds as well as he does. The move only makes sense if the Hawks make a move to upgrade the sf position. If nobody is brought in then this moves makes absolutely no sense. LD choosing offense over defense once again. Korver is a terrible defender, Morrow isn’t a good defender, and Stevenson is washed up. Tolliver looks more pf than sf to me. Considering this is the Hawks cant say im shocked. A few guys on here called it days ago that James wouldn’t make the team.

Question: Why has Peitrus not been picked up as of yet? Can he not defend like he did two-three years ago?

In UGA news: Andy Murry is playing like Tony Romo, 3 picks in the first half. Don’t be shocked if Florida blows it wide open in the 2nd half…

I liked James too but I don’t see him getting any pt at all on this team. What’s the point of stashing him on the bench in a year that we are basically just evaluating what we have so I completely agree with Sautee above. Plus I see Ferry making moves down the road. If we are not where we need to be later on I see Petro’s contract as being trae bait since its about to come off the books so If another team tries a salary dump before the deadling we could easily get a good upgrade for the 3.5M we owe him plus a couple other guys on the bench. I have faith in Danny Ferry and i’m not gonna start bad mouthing his decisions just yet. #GoHAWKS

Pietrus wanted more than the vet min that’s why he hasn’t signed. Boston wanted him back but he wanted more money. Still a solid player but I don’t think he is as good as he was a few years ago.

Ferry might be planning on making a trade early on in the season. He has very few big guys and he left on roster spot open.

Ghost Of Woody

Stevenson is not washed up. He shot 38% from 3 in the preseason. He is a much better passer and ballhandler than you all give him credit for. And he is a better defender than James. James has no offense and can’t shoot the 3. With a Teague-Harris backcourt you need that. If you need rebounding that bad, sign James Singleton.

i_am_soulstar

LD likes guys that can score, hence the Tolliver over James pick. Devin, Jeff, and Lou are very good at scoring, but none of these guys get boards. We are gonna be a TURRIBLE rebounding team this year, which is why everyone was campaigning for a rebounding specialist like James. Oh well.

Ken Strickland

It won’t matter who we pickup to fill out the roster or fill the SF position, he won’t be able to start or even contribute until he learns the OFF/DEF schemes, plays, and players. The only way to logically justify cutting James is to start Josh and use the 15th roster spot to sign or trade for another backup center.

Ghost Of Woody

Ken Strickland,

You act as if Damion James was gonna start for us opening day. He was behind Korver, Stevenson, and even Tolliver for minutes at the SF. Drew wasn’t planning on playing him much.

Speculation is that OKC will trade Harden if they can’t get him to accept an extension in the next few days. I’m sure that they will likely try and move Perkins’ contract (3 more years) as part of any trade. So…

Harden+Perkins+Maynor for Devin+Morrow+Petro.

A deal like that eliminates cap space for a maxed-out free agent from another team next summer.

I wouldn’t make that deal but I know some of you all have talked about Harden being some great player (I think he is a guy who benefits greatly from playing next to Durant & Westbrook).

GHOST-It’s obvious at this point that James wasn’t going to start since he couldn’t make the cut. But Josh is the only player that has the demonstrated ability to do a better job as a starting SF than James, based on what we need most, which is rebounding and DEF. Stevenson started 30gms at SF last yr and shot FG%28, 3pt%28.3, FT%60.0, and averaged 2.9PPG % 2RPG in over 19MPG.

Oh, and just because he shot a 3pt FG% of 37.5% in preseason doesn’t erase last yrs awful season or the fact that he did very little else in preseason.

I think you guys are overreacting.
!) The team is not gonna be pinched with 15 players to start the season.
2) Damon is worthy of consideration and probably told to not go far (take 40K and chill for a month).
3) Someone will be moved in the first 45 days.
4) Toliver will surprise many.
