Atlanta Hawks: Anderson, James waived (updated)

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks waived guard James Anderson and forward Damion James Saturday, the final roster cuts of the preseason, to reduce to 14 players ahead of next week’s regular-season opener.

Forward Anthony Tolliver made the roster as the only non-guaranteed contract. His contract would become guaranteed if he remains on the roster on Jan. 10.

The Hawks go into the season with one less player than the maximum of 15 allowed by the NBA. By keeping one roster spot open, the Hawks have the flexibility to add another player via trade or signing. Also, keeping Tolliver adds veteran depth to the bench with guard Jeff Teague and center Zaza Pachulia both nursing sprained ankles. The Hawks had until 5 p.m. Monday to make their final cuts.

Tolliver had the best preseason numbers of the final three vying for a roster spot. He appeared in all seven games, with two starts,  and averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 18.7 minutes. His size, at 6-foot-8, gives the Hawks options at both the small and power forward positions.

James, a former Hawks draft pick, appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 6.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 19.2 minutes. He played 21 minutes, with two points, in the Hawks’ exhibition finale against the Pistons Friday night.

Anderson appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 2.o points and 0.7 rebounds in 10.7 minutes. He played eight minutes, with three points, against the Pistons.

The Hawks, off Saturday after last night’s 104-88 loss to the Pistons, open the season on Friday at home against the Rockets. The Hawks ended the exhibition season at 3-4, with all wins at home and all losses on the road.

There’s absolutely nothing about DStevenson that would make anyone choose him over DJames after an assessment of their in camp and exhibition production. James showed himself to be a far superior rebounder and passer, as well as a bigger and better defender and more consistent scorer.

I don’t know how much of this BS is due to LDrew’s preference for vets, contracts issues, or both.
With the decision to cut down to 14 players, there has to be an intent to sign someone else soon. Regardless of whether that is the intent, we’re down to Korver, Stevenson, Tolliver or Josh at SF. It’s pretty obvious that Drew chose OFF over DEF and rebounding if he chose Tolliver over James.

During training camp and preseason Tolliver’s extra inch in height certainly didn’t help him become a better rebounder, defender, hustler, or passer than James. But, what’s done is done, so we have to move on.

Great…another limp body to ride the bench and perform poorly when needed while we cut potential talent and contributors (James, Benson). How many 6′8-6′9 forwards in love with shooting jumpshots do we need??

Fire LD, get a better coach, trade Morrow or Korver along with Petro and Tolliver, get some true bigs in here with a solid SF. I can deal with an undersized backcourt, but a jumpshooting, fastbreaking, so-so defensive team can only do so much. Maybe Ferry has his eyes on us bottoming out and drafting talent…

As good as James was in preseason and as good of a defensive player James is, the bottom line is that he would not have received PT this season for the Hawks….In essence, this was a smart ” financial” move by Ferry and the Hawks staff……Anderson, on the other hand, never had a chance end of discussion there……I think PETRO should be limited to STREET CLOTHES for the whole season…..The Hawks will regret the JAMES DECISION one day,,,but not for this season !

Once again, the Hawks use the “financial excuse” to not assemble the best team possible. Until they get out of that mindset, and find ways to either make more money at the box office, or simply start making moves that are in the best interest of the team on the FLOOR, we’ll never advance any further than where we are now.

So we got rid of our best rebounding and defensive sf? I’m not saying James was a star but I don’t see how a team that desperately needs rebounding gets rid of a guy who rebounds as well as he does. The move only makes sense if the Hawks make a move to upgrade the sf position. If nobody is brought in then this moves makes absolutely no sense. LD choosing offense over defense once again. Korver is a terrible defender, Morrow isn’t a good defender, and Stevenson is washed up. Tolliver looks more pf than sf to me. Considering this is the Hawks cant say im shocked. I liked James too but I don’t see him getting any pt at all on this team. What’s the point of stashing him on the bench in a year that we are basically just evaluating what we have so I completely agree with Sautee above. Plus I see Ferry making moves down the road. If we are not where we need to be later on I see Petro’s contract as being trae bait since its about to come off the books so If another team tries a salary dump before the deadling we could easily get a good upgrade for the 3.5M we owe him plus a couple other guys on the bench. I have faith in Danny Ferry and i’m not gonna start bad mouthing his decisions just yet. #GoHAWKS

Stevenson is not washed up. He shot 38% from 3 in the preseason. He is a much better passer and ballhandler than you all give him credit for. And he is a better defender than James. James has no offense and can’t shoot the 3. With a Teague-Harris backcourt you need that. If you need rebounding that bad, sign James Singleton.

i_am_soulstar

LD likes guys that can score, hence the Tolliver over James pick. Devin, Jeff, and Lou are very good at scoring, but none of these guys get boards. We are gonna be a TURRIBLE rebounding team this year, which is why everyone was campaigning for a rebounding specialist like James. Oh well.

It won’t matter who we pickup to fill out the roster or fill the SF position, he won’t be able to start or even contribute until he learns the OFF/DEF schemes, plays, and players. The only way to logically justify cutting James is to start Josh and use the 15th roster spot to sign or trade for another backup center.

Speculation is that OKC will trade Harden if they can’t get him to accept an extension in the next few days. I’m sure that they will likely try and move Perkins’ contract (3 more years) as part of any trade. So…

Harden+Perkins+Maynor for Devin+Morrow+Petro.

A deal like that eliminates cap space for a maxed-out free agent from another team next summer.

I wouldn’t make that deal but I know some of you all have talked about Harden being some great player (I think he is a guy who benefits greatly from playing next to Durant & Westbrook).

GHOST-It’s obvious at this point that James wasn’t going to start since he couldn’t make the cut. But Josh is the only player that has the demonstrated ability to do a better job as a starting SF than James, based on what we need most, which is rebounding and DEF. Stevenson started 30gms at SF last yr and shot FG%28, 3pt%28.3, FT%60.0, and averaged 2.9PPG % 2RPG in over 19MPG.

Oh, and just because he shot a 3pt FG% of 37.5% in preseason doesn’t erase last yrs awful season or the fact that he did very little else in preseason.

And if the Hawks miss out on Dwight, Bynum, and CP3, I would settle for him, plus his contract would only be for 4 years.

I think Harden benefits from playing with Durant and Westbrook, but I also think JJ benefited early on from playing in D’Antoni’s system, and playing with Nash, Stoudemire and Marion. But he was still solid for us. Harden would be too (imo).

Some crazy comments here. No chance James or Anderson would ever have left the bench or contributed. Tolliver has been a 20 min per night rotation player for 3 years running. And even he will get very little run. The 14th man is the least of our concerns.

Ken Strickland,

While DeShawn’s pre-season doesn’t negate his porous performance with the horrible Nets, it does however match with what he has done in this league. He shot well in Washington and Dallas (ask LeBron), and is shooting well now. Damion James can’t shoot. He hustles, but so does DeShawn and Tolliver and they can shoot too. Larry Drew could only keep one PF/SF tweener, and he decided to keep the one who could shoot (Tolliver). I am not mad at Drew for making this decision. Drew’s fast paced offense needs a shooter (Korver, Stevenson, Tolliver, heck even Morrow) at SF.

This team feels like Queens Park Rangers or Wigan Athletic in the EPL. Occasionally, you will get a lightning strike and a win over a top eight team, but mostly the Hawks will be behind the ball, hoping to catch a bolt in a jar with a long shot counterattack. It’s too bad the NBA doesn’t have a relegation protocol.

The Orlando Magic have waived wing Quentin Richardson, combo forward Justin Harper and wing Chris Johnson, team officials said. The moves bring the team’s roster down to 15 players, ahead of the NBA-mandated 5 p.m. Monday deadline. It also means that wing DeQuan Jones, an undrafted rookie and former Miami Hurricanes player, made the regular-season roster. Richardson, 32, didn’t fit into the Magic’s long-term plans, and he didn’t play in Orlando’s final four preseason games. Orlando Sentinel

Petro….it has to be about the money, is all I can think.

And you’re right….Danny Ferry isn’t trying to make this team into a championship contender over night. He will need some time. But it all begins next summer…when we have the monstrous cap space.

The Dallas pick is top 20 protected. Toronto pick top three protected this yr., but moves only if Toronto in lottery for next six seasons.

So in other words, Toronto keeps the pick if it’s top 3 this year, and only conveys the pick if they miss the playoffs in the next 6 seasons. I wonder if it is top-3 protected beyond this season. Because say Toronto makes the playoffs this year or wins a top-3 pick, in which case they keep their 2013 pick. If there is no protection in 2014 and Toronto misses the playoffs, OKC could end up with Andrew Wiggins.

GHOST-If you think a regular season FG% of 28.5%, a 3p% of 28.3%, and a FT% of 56.0% is shooting, then I have some snow in Alaska I’d love to sell you. And as far as exhibition season is concerned, shooting FR% of 41.2% definitely doesn’t classify Stevenson as anything but a below average shooter. And averaging 2.9PPG during the regular season and 5PPG during exhibition season definitely doesn’t show much for someone who’s supposed to be a good shooter.

He’s a liability as a rebounder and didn’t get to the FT line once during the entire exhibition season. I don’t give a damn how well he did when he helped Dallas defeat the Heat in the title gm. The fact is, he hasn’t done a doggone thing since.

He is young and over those 4 years, with Durant and Westbrook (or someone else in Westbrook’s position as Durant’s sidekick) he would be competing for the NBA title every single year.

He would consolidate his name with a title (a big possibility notwithstanding the Lebron reign since I believe that the NBA will find a way to get someone to win the title here and there between what will be a series of MIA titles).

But he went away from this for 8 million more? To be #1 cog in a semi-good team?

That’s JJ all over again. Not good.

No vava, Houston can offer him a 5 year deal going up to 78M so in reality it’s A LOT more money than OKC could’ve given him.

An extension before Wednesday would have to be a 4-yr deal. A new contract in July of 2013 can be for 5. This year + 4 = 5 total. Free agent + 5 = 5 total. It’s still in Harden’s best interest (except the possibility of injury) to wait and sign next summer.

I agree with what someone said above. The Harden move is great for the Hawks because we hold a 1st and 2nd rd pick from Houston that both carry “protection”. Lottery on the 1st. Top-40 on the 2nd.

I now expect Jeremy Lamb to become a superstar though.

This Harden trade is going to show just how bad the Jenkins pick was. PJ3 will be seeing a lot more minutes with Harden gone.

I don’t think HOU makes the trade without a guaranteed contract from Harden.

If they did, I think they may have risked too much based solely on holding his bird rights.

Nonetheless, my reference to 4 years – 60 million is based on what Harden demanded from OKC, not what he can get from HOU.

And Woj reports that OKC may have offered 54 million as a last minute thing, so we are talking about 6 million…

“Harden struggled in the NBA Finals, tried too hard and slowly, surely unraveled over the course of the series. When the rest of the Thunder were celebrating a Game 1 victory over Miami in the locker room, Harden could be heard grumbling over too few shots (five), and too few minutes (22).
Veterans Derek Fisher and Perkins laid into Harden, telling him essentially: We just won an NBA Finals game and the last thing in the world that ought to worry you are your individual statistics. Harden apologized, but it was clear his mindset wasn’t right. He never found his way back into a proper rhythm in the Finals.”

Big ? Will Harden be in a Hawks uniform next year.

If D12 not win a championship this year with 40year old Nash, 35 year old Kobe, 33 year old Gasol, 34 year old world piece, D12 COULD BE COMING BACK HOME.

TEAGUE, HARDEN, JOSH, HORFORD, D12

BILL LAMBIER THE COACH

GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harden going nowhere. HOU has designated player exception OKC used to give Westbrook a 5th year. This means 78m instead of 54 over 4 years. Harden is Joe Johnson all over again. Joe had a chance to play with Amare and Nash in the prime. He walked to chase more money and be “the man” on a fringe playoff team in Atlanta.

Soon as I read in Woj’s column that Harden wasy CRYING ABOUT MINUTES after they WON AN NBA FINALS GAME I realized that it’s good the Hawks won’t have the chance to offer him a max deal after this season. Joe Johnson 2.0.

[...] AJC’s Chris Vivlamore reported yesterday that the Hawks have waived guard James Anderson and forward Damion James. Anthony Tolliver has made the team, and his contract will become guaranteed if he is still on the roster on January 10th. [...]

I see now where OKC couldn’t offer 5 yrs because they had already used a 5 yr deal on Westbrook and they weren’t offering the max. New CBA is crazy.

James was a surprise but I’m not going to get upset about anyone that isn’t going to play regular minutes and James was neither the short or long term answer at SF. Good guy to have on the team but we have too many guaranteed contracts and need the flexibility to make trades.

Would like to see us get a distributing PG that can slow down the game when needed – especially in the playoffs and a taller Ivan type intimidator at Center to play short spurts when needed I like our team but we don’t have a lot of flexibility to adjust our game if other teams can match up with our quickness or can take advantage of our overall lack of size.

Nice to see Harden get traded- I think Oklahoma City did the right thing. Martin is no slouch when Healthy, Lamb could be just as good as Harden and they got 2 first round picks. Add the steal of drafting PJ3 OC is scary athletic, young, and not tied down to 3 max contracts.

Harden in Houston reminds e too much of when Joe came to Atlanta. Very good player but not a great player that can elevate his team to the next level. Houston will regret this in the end and should have kept all their assets. Hopefully they will pull out an 8 seed so we can get their pick, but I won’t be holding my breath.
