Atlanta Hawks: Anderson, James waived (updated)

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks waived guard James Anderson and forward Damion James Saturday, the final roster cuts of the preseason, to reduce to 14 players ahead of next week’s regular-season opener.

Forward Anthony Tolliver made the roster as the only non-guaranteed contract. His contract would become guaranteed if he remains on the roster on Jan. 10.

The Hawks go into the season with one less player than the maximum of 15 allowed by the NBA. By keeping one roster spot open, the Hawks have the flexibility to add another player via trade or signing. Also, keeping Tolliver adds veteran depth to the bench with guard Jeff Teague and center Zaza Pachulia both nursing sprained ankles. The Hawks had until 5 p.m. Monday to make their final cuts.

Tolliver had the best preseason numbers of the final three vying for a roster spot. He appeared in all seven games, with two starts,  and averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 18.7 minutes. His size, at 6-foot-8, gives the Hawks options at both the small and power forward positions.

James, a former Hawks draft pick, appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 6.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 19.2 minutes. He played 21 minutes, with two points, in the Hawks’ exhibition finale against the Pistons Friday night.

Anderson appeared in six exhibition games, with two starts, and averaged 2.o points and 0.7 rebounds in 10.7 minutes. He played eight minutes, with three points, against the Pistons.

The Hawks, off Saturday after last night’s 104-88 loss to the Pistons, open the season on Friday at home against the Rockets. The Hawks ended the exhibition season at 3-4, with all wins at home and all losses on the road.

“Harden struggled in the NBA Finals, tried too hard and slowly, surely unraveled over the course of the series. When the rest of the Thunder were celebrating a Game 1 victory over Miami in the locker room, Harden could be heard grumbling over too few shots (five), and too few minutes (22).
Veterans Derek Fisher and Perkins laid into Harden, telling him essentially: We just won an NBA Finals game and the last thing in the world that ought to worry you are your individual statistics. Harden apologized, but it was clear his mindset wasn’t right. He never found his way back into a proper rhythm in the Finals.”

Big ? Will Harden be in a Hawks uniform next year.

If D12 not win a championship this year with 40year old Nash, 35 year old Kobe, 33 year old Gasol, 34 year old world piece, D12 COULD BE COMING BACK HOME.

TEAGUE, HARDEN, JOSH, HORFORD, D12

BILL LAMBIER THE COACH

GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harden going nowhere. HOU has designated player exception OKC used to give Westbrook a 5th year. This means 78m instead of 54 over 4 years. Harden is Joe Johnson all over again. Joe had a chance to play with Amare and Nash in the prime. He walked to chase more money and be “the man” on a fringe playoff team in Atlanta.

Soon as I read in Woj’s column that Harden wasy CRYING ABOUT MINUTES after they WON AN NBA FINALS GAME I realized that it’s good the Hawks won’t have the chance to offer him a max deal after this season. Joe Johnson 2.0.

I see now where OKC couldn’t offer 5 yrs because they had already used a 5 yr deal on Westbrook and they weren’t offering the max. New CBA is crazy.

James was a surprise but I’m not going to get upset about anyone that isn’t going to play regular minutes and James was neither the short or long term answer at SF. Good guy to have on the team but we have too many guaranteed contracts and need the flexibility to make trades.

Would like to see us get a distributing PG that can slow down the game when needed – especially in the playoffs and a taller Ivan type intimidator at Center to play short spurts when needed I like our team but we don’t have a lot of flexibility to adjust our game if other teams can match up with our quickness or can take advantage of our overall lack of size.

Nice to see Harden get traded- I think Oklahoma City did the right thing. Martin is no slouch when Healthy, Lamb could be just as good as Harden and they got 2 first round picks. Add the steal of drafting PJ3 OC is scary athletic, young, and not tied down to 3 max contracts.

Harden in Houston reminds e too much of when Joe came to Atlanta. Very good player but not a great player that can elevate his team to the next level. Houston will regret this in the end and should have kept all their assets. Hopefully they will pull out an 8 seed so we can get their pick, but I won’t be holding my breath.
