Unless Josh and Horford have improved their low post game significantly, I don’t see many teams doubling them. And few teams will win much in the playoffs shooting from the outside.

Regarding the Hawks promotion to pay the tolls; have they ever done this before? Seems like a decent way to avertise the team. I am originally from the Palmetto/Newnan area. What about the advertising outreach to the southside and elsewhere? I realize toll roads are the exception in Atlanta, but would it be possible to do the personal type of outreach in other ways?

It’s all fine and dandy to try and keep flexibility for a trade but why do it at the expense of a young player whose skill set is nothing like we have in the roster??
We only have SF which are either shooters, undersized, play no D, are tweener PF who can slide down, or a combination of all these four characteristics and James, although 6′7” (6′7”3/4 with shoes) plays bigger, rebounds like his life depended on that and brings perpetual hustle on the floor.
How can you guarantee that a trade would bring a player with this potential??
Not keeping James and truly evaluate him with floor time in real NBA games would be a CRIME.

Curry has potential as a low post scorer due to his mass, however, he never rebounded anything remotely close to what he should based on his size.
His work ethic has been non existent. I am all for giving second opportunities, but unless you cut Petro, I don’t think we can afford ditching neither of the non guaranteed deals to accommodate a end of the bench reclamation project.

Joe has nothing to prove in a preseason game. My guess is most 30-YO prefer to conserve their energy for real games (unless they are shaking off the rust as part of rehab from an injury). Let the guys grinding for an NBA contract go 100 MPH.
It looks like quite a few of the bigger names in the NBA will start the season in street clothes. Joining Derrick Rose on that list are Love, Bynum, Amar’e, Dirk and potentially Kobe.

Astro Joe,
True, most vet’s who have nothing to prove in the preseason games normally converse energy and all but Joe should at least give himself a new found goal this season and thats to go to the FT line at least 5 times a game. Preseason game are the prefect time to put that into practice. No reason at all that Joe should not try and put himself in better prosition to draw fouls.

MsDee,
One of JJ’s weaknesses is his inability to get to the FT line, so I am not surprised even in a preseason game.
But if I’m a Nets fan, I wouldn’t worry about him, because I think once the season starts, JJ will do what he does, which is come close to his career averages (18, 4 and 4).
Astro Joe
October 25th, 2012
11:23 am
MsDee, except that getting to the free thow line requires getting fouled. If I’m an established vet, I don’t think my preseason strategy would be to get fouled more often than usual (and risk injury). Considering the paint will be crowded with Lopez posting up, Wallace slashing through and Humphries attacking the glass, I don’t think Joe needs to worry too much about creating FTAs for himself. If anything, he will need to knock down the open jumpers his teammates will create for him.

AJ…your comment made me look. Hawks FTA’S attempts up from 21 per game in the regular season last year to over 28 per game so far in the preseason. Don’t know if it means anything, but worth noting. Variables include offensive effort, as well as defensive effort and quality of defenders.

Astro Joe, creating fouls doesn’t always have to come by via driving thru the lane and slashing cause u are right, could very well cause an injury but creating contact while attempting a jumper is not very hard to do. Case-in-point, how many foul attempts does Lou Williams have already? He isnt putting himself in danger of getting hurt, he just knows how to protect himself while creating contact from the defender. Joe could and should add that to his game.

MsDee, it would have been good for Joe to learn how to draw fouls, I’m not doubting you. I just think when you consider his current teammates and the fact that it is preseason, he may not feel the need to make that happen now.
Just Joe, with more slashers and super-quick guys who are hard to keep in front of you, I expect our FTAs to increase. I expect that we will score more points, have more TOs, more shots blocked (our shots blocked), more FTAs and more steals. And fewer rebounds (and wins).

So Atlanta has a new sports radio station, 92.9FM The Game. It is just a few days old and some of the content is extremely rough around the edges (like a host asks a question and then tells the caller they need to hold while they take a commercial break… something from high school radio).
Anyway, they seem to be interested in serving the basketball fans in Atlanta… a group that gets very, very little attention from the 2 incumbent sports stations. I’ve heard more NBA talk in 1-2 days on that station than I’ve heard in 9 months from the other guys.
They just had Josh Smith on the air (another sign of poor radio production, the interview ended suddenly without any formal “good-bye”). He disclosed a ton of information that I had never heard previously.
He had Rondo (former classmate) set-up a meeting with KG at KG’s house in California. KG provided Josh with some leadership tips for the coming season. He “really, really” wants to be an All-Star. He says that he absolutely has a chip on his shoulder and even mentioned the Bilas quote from his draft night (he brought it up unsolicited). He said the “chip” drives him to be the player that he is. He said “Joe is Joe” and that he always preferred to be a loner (off the court). He indicated that when the old teammates would go out, they would often have different sections (he specifically said that Joe would be one place, Marvin another place and other guys someplace else). During the recent preseason trip to San Antonio about a dozen of them went to dinner and then hung out afterwards together. He thinks having that off-the-court relationship will help them on the court. When asked if this will be “his team”, he said that with Joe leaving, he and Al are “next in line”. And on a side note, he says that he doesn’t have a favorite NFL team but is a HUGE Georgia Bulldogs fan and wants to earn a degree from UGA and become a member of Dawg Nation.
Unfortunately, the radio station’s website doesn’t appear to have a podcast section or I would have simply posted that link.
Again, for hoops fans, you may want to check out that station when you want to listen to sports talk radio. Rick Kamla from NBA-TV has a morning show, so I expect to hear some quality NBA news on my long commute every morning (as opposed to hearing yet another discussion about Alabama football).

2 for John Drew…Personally, I’m not that interested in adding another free agent vet (Okur, Pietrus, Curry, Jones, etc…), but I am interested in if the Hawks can find a young big-man project to try to develop during the season. There may not be room for Jordan in Memphis…Orton in OKC….or Pittman in Miami. Those are the kind of guys that I’m hoping Ferry is keeping an eye on. Orton has me the most interested as he’s the youngest of the bunch and the Hawks liked him in the 2010 draft. Supposedly after the James for Crawford & #31 trade, we only sold the 31st pick after Orton had already been taken just a couple picks before.

Fort Valley Wildact, yeah, this is the first time I’ve heard a player say it so explicitly. It would be silly to expect that 12+ grown men would have the identical interests and would have a herd mentality and go everywhere together while traveling on the road. (I can’t imagine that 12+ of my best friends together in Dallas/Detroit/Orlando/wherever could uniformly decide where we should go for a night on the town). But it is quite a statement to say that when they were together in the same venue, that they went their separate ways. I think that is very telling (and something many of us suspected for the past 5+ years).

I don’t understand Drew’s position on the SF position. He says he’s going to utilize a SF by committee approach. He mentioned Korver, who scores from outside but doesn’t defend or rebound. He mentioned Stevenson, who defends but doesn’ t rebound or score much. He also mentioned Tolliver, who’s not a SF even though he has the size and height of one.
Then he mentioned Josh, who would require an entire frontline change and weaken our bench at center. He failed to even mention DJames as a consideration, and he’s had the most encouraging camp at the position by far. He would give us more size, athleticism, rebounding, DEF, passing, and hustle at the position than we’ve had in yrs, and wouldn’t disrupt our frontline orweaken our backup center position.
I read an article that mentioned that JSmith wasn’t fundamentally sound as a rebounder. It mentioned how he’s relied almost exclusively on his athleticism and jumping ability to get the job done, and when he loses those attributes he’ll rapidly decline. They felt moving him to SF immediately would be the best move longterm for both he and the team.
He definitely wouldn’t have to work as hard to get position close to the basket or score against most NBA SFs, which could all but eliminate him escaping to the perimeter to avoid so much inside contact. Besides, with us now having 3 potential PGs that can penetrate, dish, and create easier scoring opportunities near the basket, he might be more inclined to take advantage of that by staying closer to the lane.

cp, Hawks do need a WIDE BODY, though. Honestly, any player signed at this point isn’t likely getting a multi-year deal from any team and isn’t likely going to make a material impact on the Hawks roster this coming season. If CVIVs assumtion that we’ll carry a full 15 man roster is correct, it could be that the play of DJames forced them to reconsider their position on carrying a smaller roster. At this point, JAnderson has been the least productive player on the current 16 man roster, and he’s possibly played the fewest mins as well.
With it being highly unlikely that he’ll beat out James, it looks like James has made the team.

This is one of the funniest rosters I’ve seen to date, not funny in a bad way necessarily, but just the emphasis on gaurds, the lack of a true 3, and the thought of how undersized this team really is. The other option to make up for the lack of size is Drew trotting out the ‘big lineup’ with Zaza, Horford, and J.Smith with some kind of combination at gaurds.
It’ll be interesting to see. There’s potential, don’t see the ceiling as high as some others here though.

I mentioned many times on the blog that Joe and Josh never really kick it like that. Iv’e been out many times and seen Joe in a booth with his people and Josh in a booth with his people. It’s not really that big a deal though. While Joe makes more money than everyone on the team, there is not much he can do in a club or a restaurant that Josh or Marvin can’t do. I really like the vibe I got after listening to Josh talk about how our new team bonded at a restaurant and a movie and basically how he compared it with the team of old with separation there. I know they are men of there own and dont really have to be all up on each other but then again, that what HELPS makes champions! The connection that LeBron, Wade, and Bosh plus add Chalmers to that crew gives them the necessary chemistry needed to be sucessful. I think with us being somewhat disconnected is what ultimately left us at our ceiling point. The “core” had to be broken up!

Rod, I’m an old, broke married man who goes home and helps my sons finish their homework every night. So I have no idea what today’s night life scene is like (thank goodness).
I think it is relevant because it is relevant to Josh (or at least he indicated as much on the radio today). I doubt that it is an issue during each and every road trip, but it is at least on his mind like the Bilas comment from 7-8 years ago. If the little brohter feels “unloved” in social settings, it could create an issue between the siblings (especially if the older brother refuses to explain why he prefers to do his own thing). Again, it was an unsolicited comment about off-court chemistry between the current group and the old group. And it was made by one of the team’s captains (from the old group).
