Atlanta Hawks: Third straight preseason loss has record at 1-3

Vivlamore reporting.

Just a quick blog with some notes about last night’s 102-98 preseason loss to the Pacers before I head to practice this afternoon.

* As I reported Monday, Devin Harris did make his preseason debut against Indiana. The guard was in the starting lineup and scored 11 points with five rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes.

* The rest of the starting lineup was Kyle Korver, Anthony Tolliver, Zaza Pachulia and Jeff Teague.

* Josh Smith and Al Horford were inactive. Both played in Memphis on the first leg of the trip. Carldell Johnson, Johan Petro and DeShawn Stevenson (knee) did not play as coaches decisions.

* The Hawks were held to 38.7 percent from the field (36 of 93). Lou Williams (18 points),Tolliver (14), Korver (13),  Ivan Johnson (12), Harris (11) and Teague (11) were all double-digit scorers.

* The Pacers shot 44.6 percent from the field (33 of 74), making three less field goals in 19 fewer shots than the Hawks.

* The Hawks have allowed more than 100 points in each of the past three losses.

* The Hawks had 19 fast-break points and allowed the Pacers only seven.

* The Hawks shot 37.5 percent from 3-point range (9 of 24).

I will report on what coach Larry Drew and the players had to said about the game following practice. I would imagine that defense will again be at issue. We’ll also look ahead to Thursday’s home game against the Hornets. The Hornets game has been added to the radio broadcast of 680 AM. They will air the final three preseason games.

Finally, I would expect another round of roster cuts at some point, maybe even later today. The Hawks probably want to play their final preseason games with a roster close to what they will carry in the regular season.

jlewis you’re credibility the more you post. You might want to go look at those game logs John Wall had against the Hawks. Nothing he did was dominating. Ill let one of the stat guys post the numbers.

Feel free to comment, this is b-ball talk. Being an optimist is fine, but Brooklyns second team is better than our first, the knicks we cant match up with Amare or Melo, he put almost 40 on Josh last year in ISO. JJ didnt bog down the offense, with the way teams scout you think plays will work every night, this is why the NBA is an ISO league, if you say its not watch tape of every team, only Utah was not with Sloan, and they ran a lot of ISO to Karl Malone.
Additionally, you have to run a lot of ISO because most of the players now have low b-ball IQ’s can dunk, cant shoot, no preparation. I feel you, but ownership does not want to win with this team.

jlewis,

We don’t have a shot at top 5? To each his own man.

I said 3 to 9. No real reason to argue this point.

An old thought from an old coach:

Shooters gotta shoot.
JJenkins must play regular minutes to be effective.
The same goes for AMorrow.
Morrow is a proven vet.
If `n he`s wearin` a suit, LD is nuttier than I thought.

Back to JJenkins:
If we were not gonna play him,
then why draft him with PJ the III on the board ?
JJenk must play regular minutes, he absolutely must !

For a shot-maker;
the basket is the same hgt, the ball is the same dimensions,
the distance is the same as SL.
Yes, defenses are tougher, but open is open.

My humble opine only:
DFerry will have more say about who ” plays ”
maybe not who starts, but who ” plays ” than LD.

What did I say that was not credible? We can disagree, but everyone has an opinion. Let me break it down like this, we are hoping to win with guys that were on a New Jersey team that was horrible, and a guy like Korver that cant get his own shot, Anderson was a washout in San Antonio.
@cp
I see you base everything on points, Wall ran up and down and got into the paint at will, they almost beat us. As far as your reference to my credibility, I live in a neighborhood and friends with two NBA assistant coaches, I’m just not drinking the kool-aid.

Folks: Just back from practice. Will have new blog soon. If you missed my tweets from practice: Josh Smith (knee) and Al Horford (shoulder) will held out Tuesday vs. Pacers. They should play Thursday vs. Hornets. Also: Here is the likely starting lineup tomorrow (based on what I saw during practice): Teague, Harris, Stevenson, Smith, Horford. It sounds like we’ll get a much better idea of the starters and bench rotation over the last three preseason games.

So let me get this straight.. Wall dominated the Hawks last season although
1. He didn’t score a lot of points
2. Turned the ball over a lot
3. The Hawks beat them in all their games last year

I guess dominated means something different in the place I live. Good for you to be friends with two NBA assistants. Next time you see them ask them what dominates mean because clearly you have a different definition than most of us.

the games were close because he couldnt be contained, he turns the ball over a lot anyway, i’m saying we dont have anyone that can guard him. Remember, when they got NeNe in a trade they gave us trouble. I said the Hawks will have to battle them for one of the last spots and two players we can not handle, I didnt say they could beat us.

Anyone that has followed the league a long time will tell you, the players today do not have high IQ’s and they are low skilled, they play a lot of AAU and dont stay in college to get seasoning. Many of todays young players dont even read the scouting reports, many are more concerned with getting to a party after the game if the flight leaves the next morning. Thats why bad teams have stayed bad for so long, the talent pool is slim and the veterans go to good teams, thats why they are at a premium.

If basketball is mainly an ISO league, and plays don’t work in the league, why is it that the Triangle offense (which consists of plays not centered around ISO) has won 11 championships. And also why is that San Antonio, the team who runs the ISO the least in the NBA, has also won quite a few championships by running plays? ISO is used in the crunch moments because it reduces the likelihood of turnovers. However, plays are how you get your playmakers the ball in their most efficient positions with out the defense being able to contain it as much. Think about it, when was the last time you saw Ray Allen knock down a three from an ISO play?

Valid points, but you help make one of my points, look whom the Lakers and Spurs and Boston have in the middle. Ray Allen gets shots from double teaming the post or off the double team of players. The Lakers and Chicago ran the triangle, but Michael and Kobe were ISO players. The reason the Hawks have not been affective in the playoffs is teams doubled and tripled JJ because they knew we had no shooters, Jamal was the big help in that regard.

O’Brien[, Section 303 and Grandad],

Tell Section 303 to refer to your post @9:12am, dated 10/17/2012, [FTPB] because he [Section 303] seems to think the Hawks have a good chance at ending the 2012-2013 regular season as a 4[th] seed in the Eastern Conference [standings].

Hey, Grandad, how are my brackets [looking]? “Imitation is the sincerest [form] of flattery.” Jus’ tryin’ to be like an ol’ pro [at (the use of) brackets and parentheses]. [LOL]

You can disagree, but I have a clue. I’ve watched the NBA and gone to games since Wilt played small in big games and Kareem wanted out of Milwaukee. You are talking about running an offense that Drew in his time here has shown no aptitude to install or run.

Sorry, there is no shot that LD is coming back. They havent fired him because they dont want to pay him not to coach, and i’ll hit you with logic on that one. Why is it you say shipped off Marvin and Joe because we didnt make it out of the first round, but you still have the coach that didnt get us past the first round?

Ken…I expect Stevenson to bounce back to his Dallas form. New Jersey played him almost exclusively at SF, which is a mistake. LD’s lineup above (Teague/Harris/Stevenson) is also a mistake. Most SG’s can’t handle DSS’s physical style of play. Opponent’s PER suggests that he is an elite defender at the 2. If Teague & Stevenson can keep opposing guards in check, then we have an opportunity to slow down the other team and force them to play through the low post (post up against Korver/Smith/Horford).

I’d start Korver at the 3 for offensive spacing. We need to find out quickly if Teague/Smith/Horford can carry the load on offense. The best way to do that, is to provide maximum spacing with two 3-pt shooters on the wings (Stevenson & Korver).

If we need a “stopper” at the 3, opponent’s PER suggests Damion James is your guy. My position is to keep one slasher, one shooter, and one defender on the floor at all times (at the guard & wing positions). If my “defender” can hit a 3, then I want him matched up with my starters (who are auditioning to see if they can lead this team in to the Danny Ferry era).
