Atlanta Hawks practice report: Starting lineup preview?

Vivlamore reporting from Hawks practice.

Coach Larry Drew said he still hasn’t decided which players will dress for Sunday’s exhibition opener against the Heat at Philips Arena. Game time is 2 p.m. There will be no television coverage (as with all preseason games) and no radio coverage. I believe the only radio coverage during the preseason will be the final two games – Oct. 20 vs. Dallas and Oct. 26 at Detroit.

Drew would also not disclose his starting lineup for the game. My guess would be that the lineup looks a lot like one of the practice groups from Saturday. The white group consisted of Jeff Teague (PG), DeShawn Stevenson (SG), Kyle Korver (SF), Josh Smith (PF) and Al Horford (C). While Anthony Toliver also wore white, the first five were on the floor as coaches went over game-planning for the Heat. Drew would say that in addition to returning starters Teague, Smith and Horford that Korver and Stevenson will “play a big role for us this season.”

Drew also said he would mix up the starting lineups during the preseason to get a look at different player combinations.

The rest of the team were divided like this:

Blue: Lou Williams, John Jenkins, Anthony Morrow, Ivan Johnson, Zaza Pachulia, Johan Petro and Carldell Johnson.

Red: Devin Harris, James Anderson, Damion Jones, Mike Scott, Keith Benson, Isma’il Muhammad

“It’s going to be our preseason game,” Drew said. “I’m anxious to see how well we go out and execute some of the things we’ve done thus far in training camp, especially with the new faces. It will be fun to finally be able to go against somebody (else). We’ll be taking a look at different combinations (of players).”

Drew did say that some of those who will dress will only see limited minutes.

We will report back before Sunday’s game with the lineup and other details.

When will the NBA ever learn to stop competing with the NFL. Nobody is going to go to this game when the Falcons are playing at the same time.

No TV or radio. Hawks get no respect when it comes to the preseason. Falcons and Braves have no problem with preseason coverage so why do the Hawks? I guess our ownership group sees things different.

RG3 Sunday against the Fal-cons in Washington..

A Trap Game? Perhaps..

The Carolina game was supposed to be a trap game.

I see nothing “trap-ish” about this game, whatsoever. The Redskins, despite their .500 record, are very potent. There’s nothing sneaky or under the radar about them.

Either the Falcons play well, or RG III gets more SportsCenter highlights….and I think the game will be a shootout. I’d be surprised if its a defensive game, but you never know.

Agreed on the NBA schedule….nobody will be watching the Hawks in a preaseason game unless they just HATE football, LOL.

Now I believe we can see the problems, we will be easy to guard, and we cant guard the 2,3,4 or 5 position. How the heck is this team going to contend?

Big Ray

jlewis ,

How anybody thinks this is a contending team is beyond me. Can they win a track meet? Yeah. A championship? Nope. Don’t know if they’ll even make the playoffs, we will have to see.

I don’t think our ability to guard or be guarded is quite that extreme. We will be able to get stops, but having a lineup like ours requires the knowledge of how and when to take advantage, the committment to doing those things, and the discipline to get back to it when things start to go wrong.

I don’t question the talent so much as I question all the other stuff. Size…well, we know the deal there. We don’t have enough useable size.

I’m actually ok with a lottery pick with Ferry at the helm. Not ok with watching “lottery pick” basketball, but you can’t have one without the other. Something tells me that unless key guys get injured, there will be no lottery for us…we’ll be just a tad too good.

I agree with you, but some are saying how much better this team will be, this roster is full of cast offs. I am interested to know where we are going to get stops, Josh is a weakside help defender, not a good one on one, Al is horrific, Teague cant guard the one. I dont see it.

Pargo = cast off
T-Mac = cast off
Willie Green = cast off
Vlad Rad = cast off
Hinrich = cast off
Jason Collins = cast off

Bench full of cast offs yet we were the #4 seed in the East.

@random, i’ve watched the Hawks since Josh was a rookie, when they tried to play JJ at point and when Al was drafted, what I say is true. Teague was schooled by every point the hawks played last year, go back and look. Has Josh or Al been all defensive, if so, Josh maybe once. The problem with this team is no one will command a double team, I love josh’s athleticism, but he has a low b-ball IQ. I also read where Teague said they will be able to run more now that JJ is gone, he and Josh brought the ball up, Joe ran to the corners, the scapegoat is gone, its on them now.

jlewis

@clyde. Those cast offs never really played, the bench was hurt all year and Drew rarely played T-Mac, it can be argued if we had a bench the team would not have been broken up. We forget Pargo and Willie Green missed wide open jumpers that were passed to them out of the double team.

Where is all this confidence in Teague, he air balled wide open threes at the end of games and did not want that ball at all, thats why he was in Drew’s doghouse, wouldnt push the ball or go get it and make a play for anyone else.

Hawks please don't suck this year

This team is built to run, with no ball stoppers(JJ) , so I do feel this team is better than last years. Teague is better than ppl give him credit for. He’s about to be in his 4th year. First year under Woody, no playing time. Second year barley played again, until the playoffs (cuz LD didn’t have a choice). Last year, he finally got playing time. And he was solid. Made mistakes, but it was his first consistent playing time. Basically last year was his rookie year. This year, he’s one of the few who stayed after the revamped roster. Confidence comes with playing, and last year was his first year being a full time starter. If Drew lets him play, expect to see tons of growth on both sides of the ball…

Al and Smoove however, have no more excuses. Been in the league long enough to know what it takes, and now they are the focal point of the team. The team may not be title contenders this year, but those two are have to be all stars this year to see if they are worth keeping for the long term…

If Josh Smith’s b-ball IQ is so low how come he’s the one that get praise from coach Drew in regards to knowing the system. Could it be that he knows more than his teammates and at times he tries to over compensate. Joe Johnson was not a scape goat. He was just getting paid Kobe Bryant money and he wasn’t Kobe Bryant. He was too inconsistent and at times he did hog the ball and if you’re going to be inconsistent with your shot but demand to shoot all the time it knocks everybody else out of rhythem.

If that will be one of the line ups which LD is considering, then I think that, Korver is the first to come out with Lou in at the SG slot.

Stephenson then slides to the SF slot.

If Stephenson can replicate his past efficiency from the 3 point range, then he will be on the floor for extended minutes (25-30mpg).

Damion James seems the natural 3rd SF in line if he can stick.

Zaza and Ivan will relieve Al and Josh giving a good rugged front court on the floor when Harris and Lou will be doing their up and down thing for the reserves.

Since both Ivan and Zaza are nimble enough to keep up, it’s probable that this rotation should work out fine against 60% of the league.

I stand by my estimate of 37-42 wins and #9-#7 spot.

why isnt there more discussion on tolliver at sf for extended minutes? he is about the same size as marvin was and seems capable of doing the kinds of things marvin did maybe better. not much has been said about the guy from day one. what is known about him. josh even put him in the mix as a three ball shooter. he might be the sleeper of the bunch brought in at the last minute.

could we start teague, korver, tolliver, josh and al and be able or ready to compete? still have morrow, harris, stevenson, ivan and zaza on the bench. is that worse than what we had to wok with last year for a top ten? what is different is that really in the last few years the hawks have been a 6 or 7 man deep team only. whereas, this year it is going to have to open up and get productivity out of 10 or more guys to step up into rotating roles.

guess dawgnole is licking his wounds today, double loser baby. 3 and 5 to the teens. flying low are you bro? loser, heh heh

He is the one player that can duplicate what Joe did last year. The only problem with starting him is it will bury Jenkins. On paper, I like him starting with Tolliver or Korver at SF. I think Ivan is deserving as well. According to V, he appears to have worked really hard this Summer.

If you are not a fan of the team and only bring NEGATIVITY, why even post? Wouldn’t your energy be best served to go to a site of the team you enjoy?

Also, Sports is entertainment for most of the world. Very few people benefit directly from sports. Win, lose or draw – did the Braves loss affect your personal life? What about the Hawks? Will you get a extra bonus in your check if the Hawks win?

I’m all on board with Korver as the starting SF… it should solidify his trade value for February if he is able to be fairly productive on a middling team. I was hoping Morrow would start at SG for the same reason… but I guess LD has decided to try and win and not simply spotlight players that can be trading for assets that next year’s head coach will enjoy.

Have the feeling that 1 or 2 players may be traded before the season starts. Way too many shooting guards. John Jenkins should get 15-20 minutes per as well as Anthony Morrow.

A starting 5 of:
Ctr-Al Jefferson
PF-Al Horford
SF-Josh Smith
SG-Deshawn Stevenson or Lou Williams
PG-Jeff Teague or Devin Harris

Would be a pretty solid starting 5. This line-up could be a 2 Seed in the eastern conference.
