Atlanta Hawks practice report: All 19 won’t dress for exhibition opener

Vivlamore reporting from Hawks practice.

All 19 players currently on the Hawks’ training camp roster will not dress when the team opens the exhibition season Sunday against the Heat.

Coach Larry Drew said the roster is too large to try to get all the players in the  game. He declined to say which players might sit out, a determination that will be made by the coaching staff  Saturday.

Those players who do not dress will work out Sunday morning.

“We’ll be looking at who has absorbed what we’ve put in,” Drew said. “Strategically, we’ll look at matchups and some of the combinations we want to put out on the floor [during the regular season].

* Friday morning the Hawks ran through a non-contact practice with full participation. The team will run a full-contact practice this evening and play a three-quarters scrimmage.

“I’m expecting some guys to get lost, especially in a game-type situation,” Drew said. “That is what training camp is all about.”

Again, I wasn’t allowed to watch much of practice other than free-throw shooting. Here is how the roster was divided for drill work. I wouldn’t read too much into it because it was for non-contact drills and some offense and defense implementation.

White: Williams, Stevenson, Morrow, Smith, Pachulia, Tolliver

Blue: Teague, Jenkins, Korver, Johnson, Horford, Johnson

Red: Harris, Anderson, James, Scott, Benson, Muhammad, Petro

* All three players who have been injured – Pachulia, Harris and Stevenson – participated in the non-contact work this morning. Pachulia went through half-court 5-on-5 contact drills Thursday.

I spoke to Pachulia and his issue is a left groin injury suffered just before leaving to play for the Georgia National Team this summer. He rested and played three games with the national team but pulled it again before the fourth game.

“It’s better,” Pachulia said. “Every day I’m making progress. … I came here and it was hurting. I talked to the trainers and we decided it was better to take it easy now and make sure I’m 100 percent ready for November.”

* I will post the Kyle Korver story later this afternoon.

FTPB, Chauncey Billups had more than a little to do with that Denver run to the WCF. Not just in terms of his on-court production (which was significant) but his leadership as well.

C-Viv, nice stuff man. I still hope we can somehow get a starting caliber SF before the season starts. I just can’t see us winning with Korver starting the games.

Doc ,

Yeah, old wounds indeed. Should’ve been Chris Paul and JJ….long time ago. Or Deron Willams and JJ. Or hell, it could have been Brandon Roy and JJ at the 2 and 3….but no….

Najeh Davenpoop ,

I look at who Melo had with him on that Nuggets team and who as coaching that team. I say that was a big part of it…them getting to the Finals. He was the #1 guy, no doubt. But would Melo have gotten THIS team with Woody at the helm to the Finals in the East? Doubt it.

Does that prove Melo is no better than Joe? Absolutely not. And I actually think it’s not even a good argument. One guy you can build around one way, the other you really can’t. If it were possible, Phoenix would have not let Joe go the way they did…

or maybe deron, brandon, jj and josh, ray? and yes we would have not been in a position to pick al.

Ramon ,

Really not arguing with you on JJ. I’d take his overall game over Melo’s better scoring/rebounding prowess. But we built around JJ all the wrong way, after choosing him to build around. JJ never was and never is going to be anybody’s #1 guy, and there is nothing wrong with that.

In some ways, I used to be real unhappy with his attitude, but look how things have been run around here. We’ll miss what he was capable of, but we weren’t ever going to maximize what he could do with the types of coaches and rosters we’ve had. A lot of the problem has been at the pg position.

Yep…and that would not have mattered. I would have taken any of those guys. Horford was a “can’t miss” consolation prize for so many draft gaffes. And he’ll never be enough of a consolation, he’s not that kind of player.

Excellent point. Billups was one I was thinking of in particuar. But again, I don’t see much merit in this argument anyway.

From the last blog….Gvie me the guy thats going to fill it up every night-i’ll pass on the guy that disappears for weeks of the season.. Melo is top 3-5 every year in scoring -the man puts up numbers, and Ive never heard of him being uncoachable. I guess being outspoken is the same as uncoachable??? Joe has the personality of a paperclip. Melo is a Super Star -Joe Cool is not, its that simple.

Big Ray,

Glad to see you still around. Will there be a Hawks nest blog this season?

Also, even though I hate to enter the Horford talk that goes from blog to blog but what do you think about an Horford for Greg Monroe/Corey Maggette trade. Hawks may have to add another player (Deshawn/Petro) to make the salaries work. Hawks would get a young big that can play 4/5 along with a scoring wing that’s a pretty decent defender and expiring contract.

No way Detroit does that deal. Monroe is a legit center with a ton of upside.

Melvin, I would make that trade but Dumars/Detroit wouldn’t make that trade. And Maggette’s deal expires, which makes him somewhat valuable (he tends to miss 20+ games/year and plays hurt another 20 games… but is a very good scorer the few times/season when he is healthy0.

Melo led Denver to a tightly contested Western Finals against the Lakers. He also led Syracuse to a college National Championship. Joe Johnson?

I think you could say that about anyone, though. The #1 guy on the team accounts for the bulk of a team’s success, but the supporting players obviously also play a role. Do Nique’s 1987-88 Hawks take the Celtics to 7 games with a league average point guard instead of Doc Rivers? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean Nique doesn’t get (or deserve) the credit for leading the Hawks that far.

I don’t see why it should be any different in Melo’s case. Sure, that team probably doesn’t go as far with Bibby at the point as Billups, but Melo is still the #1 guy and still gets the bulk of the credit.

Put it another way, do the Hawks in 2009 or 2010 go to the ECF with Billups at PG instead of Bibby? I doubt it.

Melo takes a lot of sh-t from a lot of people, some of it deserved, but his stats and production so far in his career are a lot closer to Nique than they are to Joe. So like I was saying, if you are going to put Joe ahead of Melo, you might as well rank him even with or higher than Nique. I don’t think that would be accurate.

With Devin, Zaza, & Stevenson most likely not playing this sunday, I think the starters will look like this:

Teague
Jenkins (getting a lot of burn, esp with Harris out and Teague playing limit min)
Korver
Josh
Horford

(with Teague, Josh & Horford playing VERY limited min due to the face that 1st, they know the plays and 2nd, Hawks vets!!)

2nd unit:

Lou Williams
Morrow
James
Ivan
Benson (getting a lot of burn)

Fillers:
Tolliver
Mike Scott (getting a lot of burn)
Anderson
Carldrell Johnson

Question: WHAT EVER HAPPEN TO THE BACKUP PG FROM OUR SUMMER LEAGUE? I THOUGHT HE WOULD GET THE INVITE AS WELL

Well what JJ did or did not do for ATL will be answered this season, its basically the same team minus Marvin. Melo is a scorer and nothing else, Denver got better when he left, lets see if ATL gets better with JJ gone.

It’s interesting….Monroe is a long fellow, though I don’t know if he survives as a 5 in this League. Remains to be seen. Maggette doesn’t seem motivated to do much anymore, but who knows what you could get out of him…when he’s on the court.

Najeh ,

I never put Joe in front of Melo. If I wanted a guy that makes everybody better from the wing, I pick Joe. If I want a guy to build an offense around as my #1 option, I choose Melo.

Otherwise, the two should not be compared. All good points in your posts, I just feel that NY will never have what Denver had to put with Melo. Stoudamire refuses to play like Camby/Martin, and that is part of the issue. Chandler helps, but not enough right now. They need a second “killer” in there. There’s nobody like Nene in there to provide any real beef….

That was my real point about Denver and Melo. Denver had the coach (not the best, but Karl is one of the better coaches, at least to me), had the PG in Billups, had some other tough-minded guys on the court. NY has issues that addresses none of that.

Can’t compare Joe in the ATL to Melo in Denver. A lot of warriors on one court, far too few on another. But that’s the past.

High-Sider ,

I hear you. CP3/JJ or Deron/JJ would have been an unstoppable backcourt tandem, though. Chicago proved that though the tandem of Jamal and JJ was quite potent, it wasn’t unstoppable by any means.

Najeh ,

That was also why I said Melo was 2nd only to Lebron as far as talent at the swing position. The guy’s game is insane. Lebron just has the ability to be a point-forward, which sets him apart. But let’s not be blind…Carmelo is and has been the better pure scorer.

Big Ray

How did Denver get better when ‘Melo left? They actually regressed BEFORE he left, then played better without the distraction of him going, perhaps, but they didn’t get better from what I saw. If they had, they would have made the Finals again…which they did not.

Like, duh? Of course not. The NBA only allow 15 players max to get dressed. By the startiing tip off those four players will most likely be cut.
