Updated: Tolliver will be in Hawks training camp

Vivlamore reporting.

Sorry folks, was involved in some interviews to prepare for the start of Hawks training camp one week from today. You ready?

The Hawks will start training camp on Tuesday with 13 already guaranteed contracts and as many as seven other players competing for a roster spot. The Hawks may, or may not, carry the limit of 15 guaranteed so they have some flexibility after the start of the season or  for the trade market. However, there will be two spots up for competition. I expect the full training camp roster to be announced some time this week.

One player I know will be in camp is Anthony Tolliver. The forward played the past two seasons with the Timberwolves, where he averaged 4.1 points and 3.0 rebounds in 51 games. He has also played for the Spurs, Trail Blazers and Warriors. He was with the Cavaliers after going undrafted out of Creighton University in 2003, but never played. Tolliver’s one-year contract is not guaranteed.

Over his five-year career, Tolliver has averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game. His best season came with the Warriors in 2009-10 when he averaged 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds.

How is this a good thing? Another undersized power forward?

glw,

“1. I think Korver will be in the rotation. I dont have much faith in Jenkins seeing much playing time at first. I think a wing will be eventually traded and maybe that will free up Jenkins some minutes.”

Based on Jenkins’ stats in college, summer league and also articles on him, he has more skills than Korver. I see Korver being traded this season.

“2. As far as ended the game….Josh, Al and Lou will definitely be there. Devin or Teague will be at the point, I wouldnt say for sure its Devin. If Teauge is going good then he will be out there. Zaza being out there will depend on matchups. If its Miami, Zaza isnt out there, more than likely Tolliver/James/Ivan or more apt to be out there. While i do see Josh playing on the wing some, at crunch time, Josh will be at PF for his shot blocking abilities.”

Well, of course, Teague or Harris, depending on match-ups and game performances by the 2. Same goes for Zaza. But again, if I had to guess, I still see Zaza in there if he isnt in foul trouble.

“If its Miami, Zaza isnt out there”

Why u say that?

And put me on the MsDee “I want John Jenkins to start” bandwagon. Let’s see if the kid can play right out of the gate. If really advancing in the playoffs isn’t the major goal this year, let’s see if guys like Jenkins and Ivan can really play if we give them extended minutes.

Even if Jenkins doesn’t play extended minutes, I’d rather he play with the starters for 10 – 15 minutes a night, than with the backups.

Northcyde,

By starting Jenkins GUARANTEES him playing time. Other than that, I JUST CANT SEE HIM TOUCHING THE COURT ANYTIME SOON, unless a guard gets injured.

Nice link Ms. Dee….this one is kind of a surprise, but this now gives us a full roster. It’s not an expensive deal, and it appears Danny is going to use vets to help with the defense that we will need to compete with Miami.
Doesn’t Tolliver play the 3 as well? He hasn’t started in a couple of years, so not sure how much of a contributor he is, but he does show a good balance of scoring/rebounding for less than 1M.

I’m okay starting either Morrow or Korver… it could enhance their trade value. if Jenkins doesn’t get a lot of burn until after the trade deadline, it wouldn’t completely stunt his growth.

FTPB northcyde,

I agree with Ramon, no way u cant see us being better than last years team. Yes, we may have a lot of shooters but these arent JUST shooters, WE HAVE PREMIER SHOOTERS. These guys arent OFF very often and if 1 or 2 are, we still have 3 others who arent so to count us towards the end of the playoff line just because we may be a limited defensive team isnt a very good idea cause those same opponents WILL HAVE TO BE ABLE TO STOP ALL OF OUR PREMIER SHOOTERS ALL OVER THE COURT WITH TOLLIVER BEING ADDING TO THE MIX!! I am more confident than EVER to see this team surprise the whole NBA world this season!!

“Free-agent forward Anthony Tolliver on why he will be signing with Atlanta. “I just thought it was the best situation for me,’’ Tolliver said. “I just think they don’t have a lot of players like me. I think it’s a great opportunity.’’ Tolliver believes he will fit in well with the Hawks because he’s a big man who can step out and shoot the ball, something Atlanta doesn’t have.”

I thought we already had enough big guys who shoot jumpers, with Al asking to be out there and Josh patrolling the perimeter more than he should.

And on top of that, we will have a healthy Horford AND Zaza back with Josh coming in on his final year of his contract..WOW, Way 2 Go Mr. Executive of the Year!!

Oh and if anybody care where I see us being in the standings, I SAY #2..yep #2 BEHIND only MIAMI!!

I’ve been advocating starting Jenkins for a while also. Give the guy guaranteed 15 minutes a game, and see what happens. As long as he’s knocking down his open jumpers, he’s a better option than what Marvin was. And I don’t want to hear that he can’t guard Wade, Kobe, or Joe. Because no one else in the league can guard those players either.

I must say while, I’m not deterred about the Tolliver signing. I would have preferred to have Pietrus instead.

I think players 9-15 are clearly better this year. Unfortunately, it is 1-8 that determines how deep you go in the playoffs and I will maintain that a lottery pick is better than a painful first round loss.

AJ, you know I want a top 3 pick in this draft. However, if you’re going to go through attracting free agents, making the playoffs the season before is the best way to go.

AJ, this is why, this off season, I would prefer to trade Josh or Al to a team like Sac or Charlotte who is at great risk of being a bottom five team. Only problem is, I doubt either of those teams would take Josh for a high pick with him being on an expiring contract.

Not to be repetitive but I’m also on the start Jenkins bandwagon. Give the majority of minutes to lou and dharris but start the kid with about 10-15 min a night with the starters.

MsDee

Well, considering the fact that most of our team is made up of shooters, and only a few ‘bangers”, I dont really see alot of injuries this season.

@ Ms. Dee

About Korver vs Jenkins. Its not really an either or with them. I see Jenkins as a 2 and for the Hawks Korver will be a 3. Lou, Devin and Morrow will see minutes at the 2, just dont see LD giving him big minutes. As I stated in a previous blog, Jenkins will get the Jordan Crawford treatment, spot minutes when they are trying to find an offensive spark.

Zaza wont be on the floor at the end of game unless its a Dwight/Bynum/BLopez out there that needs defending. Miami doesnt have that type, so from a matchup standpoint, small ball will be employed mostly against Miami. There are lots of other teams where Al will play center a lot, I was just citing Miami as a prime example.

ECF, the Derrick Williams knee rub is a classic.

To me, Tolliver is going to get a chance to start at the 3. He looks like he runs the court very well and is a perimeter threat.

It will be interesting to see how LD develops the rotation. Danny didn’t bring in these vets to sit and watch the returnees play.
I think our depth is very good this year. We just need to see if we can jell as a defensive unit.

I don’t see us impacting the playoffs as much as we could be impacting the draft position we need to bring in a top talent.

And for this tweet, DF gets my preseason vote for Exec of the Year:
via Stefan Bondy: “Billy King said Joe Johnson was never in the equation until Danny Ferry became GM”

And we haven’t seen the last of MC have we?

“Michael Cunningham @ajchawks about 54 minutes ago
Anthony Tolliver will be in #Hawks training camp.”

Anthony Tolliver thinks a lot of himself as a shooter for a guy who shot 39% from the field as a power forward and 25% from three. But he says the Hawks don’t have shooters like him? Does he mean we don’t have shooters as bad as him?

I’ve got it at 13 fully-guaranteed: Teague, Harris, Williams, Morrow, Jenkins, Korver, Stevenson, Tolliver, Smith, Johnson, Horford, Pachulia, and Petro….and then Scott with a partial guarantee.

Anderson & James with make-good contracts only.

So, I’ll guess Benson, Sy & Wannamaker also come to camp.

With Tolliver coming in, and probably asking to wear #44, I was wondering would the Hawks ever consider retiring Maravich’s number? He was a top 50 all-time NBAer. He was a one of kind player, but it never benefitted us despite him being a 2X all-star for us.

So, how is Tolliver capable of playing SF? Because he shoots from the perimeter? So does Bargnani… is he a candidate to play SF? Tolliver couldn’t guard an SF with a night stick and a pair of handcuffs. Come on, people.

I think this means that Josh Smith is at the 3, Horford at the 4 and Zaza at the 5 with Tolliver and Ivan (as well as that other guy they got in the trade) playing backup roles and Horford sliding to the 5 for some minutes also.

That also means Teague and Harris start Morrow and Korver backing up. The lack of size on the wing is puzzling to me since there are plenty of 66-68 SFs in the league and still available.

Yall are loony thinking LD will start John Jenkins. Don’t be foolish he’ll barely play this season because we have too many veterans that play his role and are more dependable.

“HELP WANTED”
Center-Preferably 6″11″ or taller-must be able to protect the rim. Must be willing to “Block Shots, go after offensive rebounds, and play help defense. Also, must be willing to get into the gym and maintain a weight of 265lbs to endure the grind of an 82game season…If you do not meet these parameters, do not apply, or trade yourself to the Utah Jazz!

So far Ferry has done a much better job of bringing in minimum contract FAs. James, Anderson and Toliver certainly offer more potential than the likes of EDampier, EThomas, JStackhouse, and JCollins.

i like the signing. On a min contract he could step in a play if needed. If does not play at all then we dont lose anything with it being a min contract. He plays his butt off when on the floor. He takes way to many outside shots but I think that is what danny is looking for. Not complete live by the three die by the three but close. One thing is for sure we will never be out of a game with these shooters. Just think of a lineup of lou, jenkins, Morrow, korver and at. I know they could not play any d but that would be some video game shooting going on. Cant wait for preseason. What a fun time to love sports im a georgia boy and love my dawgs, braves, falcons and hawks for all to have a great chance to compete is awesome.

Can’t say much about A.Tolliver…I had to look at some of his clips to remember who he was…These guys ain’t going to overwhelm you…but Danny has brought some GOOD young talent with NBA experience…these guys are probably starving for an opportunity to get some regular PT…should be a very competitive training camp.

AJ, this might be wishful thinking…but if the Hawks make the playoff…which I think they will…how’s that a setback…After trading JJ and Marvin…and gaining flexibly to build for the future.

Hey, if we finish 6th or higher…it might not be automatic elimination in the first round.
