SportSouth to televise 75 Hawks games

Vivlamore reporting.

SportSouth will televise 75 of the 82 Hawks games during the 2012-13 NBA season, all in high definition. The network will air the season opener on Nov. 2 against the Rockets at Philips Arena.

Former Hawks star and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins returns for his fifth straight season as the Hawks game analyst. Play-by-play announcer Bob Rathbun returns for his 17th season. Jerome Jurenovich will serve as the sideline reporter.

Before and after every televised game, SportSouth will air a 30-minute pre- and post-game segment. Andre Aldridge will host and Mike Glenn will be the analyst.

I love Nique as a Hawk, but my god he’s the worst to ever broadcast sports. EVER. How many times can I hear him say ‘He do what he do out on the court’ or ‘he’s a guy that can shoot that shot?’ Tell me why teams are running certain plays or why a defense is reacting the way they are, not ‘this guy’s a good player, Bob.’

Seriously, watch that video at 2:40. Bird isolates against Dominique and goes by him like he’s not even there. Dominique was a player with athleticism comparable to Michael Jordan. Why was Jordan one of the best defensive players in NBA history while Dominique, a player with similar athletic gifts, was a complete joke defensively?

Heart.

Effort.

Seriously, watch that video at 2:40 and watch the plodding white guy blow by one of the most celebrated athletes in NBA history. It’s pathetic.

It shows your knowledge of basketball when you are comparing Joe Johnson to Dominique. Why didn’t you post the video of Nique scoring 56 against the Bulls while being guarded by Pippen and Jordan? Or why didn’t you post the video of Dominique scoring 57 against the Celtics?

Buddy, so YouTube is a good tool for evaluating a player’s heart? Wow. Sorry, I don’t ever recall watching a Hawks team with Joe Johnson and thinking to myself, “they should be in the ECF because they are clearly a top 2 team in the conference”. Not once did I personally come to that conclusion. If it would take a Herculean effort to get a team to the ECF, then maybe that team needs to consider adding talent (or better coaching) as opposed to purchasing rabbit’s feet and hoping for a miracle.

Hello there, brig. Hope you’ve enjoyed the offseason. I haven’t been following the Hawks much at all this summer. Was so disappointed with their failure against the Celtics, I just took a break and started trolling (I prefer to call it “visiting”) the UGA, GT, Braves, and Falcons blogs.

I will say that I’m surprised (but pleased) that they let go of Johnson and Williams–as much for the $$$ it freed up as anything else. I was a fan of both of those guys, but shared the frustration of many on here when they repeatedly fell short of their capabilities–especially given the bloated salaries they commanded.

I’m hoping Ferry will prove to be a breath of fresh air–something this franchise has sorely needed. I think he has shown a willingness to at least do something, not just stand pat–as so many ATL teams have done for 5 decades.

Hard to believe the season starts in little over a month. Maybe we’ll finally show some real progress this go-round; i.e., make it past Round 2.

Nique is so bad though. Not much insight.

This yr our announcers should have it a lot easier than in the past, when they had to explain away all of the
1-ISOs,
2-illadvised jumpers,
3-lack of penetration,
4-walking the ball up the court when we should be running it up
5-PFs and OCs running point on fastbreaks rather than giving it to a guard
With the recent addition of so many capable 3pt shooters(Jenkins, Korver, Morrow, Harris, Williams), I doubt if anyone, especially GM DFerr, will tolerate Josh launching those illadvised 3pointers of the past. Either he accepts his role as a primary inside scorer and lane filler on fastbreaks, or Ferry will either trade him or allow him to walk.

Ferry is definitely going to expect more control of the team and overall direction from LDrew and his players. This team doesn’t belong to any player(s), or the HC. It belongs to GM Danny Ferry. Ferry’s insistence on direction and accountability, both from players and coaches, along with the infusion of youth, speed, quickness, athleticism, versatility, depth, shooting and penetrating ability, will make for an exciting season for the Hawks and us fans.

The regulars about 85%. I am in sales, and if our Admin Asst went on strike, they would replace her with another fresh pretty face out of college. She would make some mistakes, but eventually with experience she will get better. If the sales team went on strike, then the $$ – or lack thereof would hurt the entire organization.

The regular refs are screwing themselves. They are about as smart as the Eastern Airline employees 30 years ago. Yet, with there departure, new people are getting an opportunity.

DawgNole, or who ever you are:

I was not reffering to you in any way or fashion, I reffered to the collective blogsmosphere and the collective angst I was feeling about the tone of the blog. The only Bob I was reffering to is Bob Rathburn, the guy that calls the Hawks/Dream games and sometimes Nascar.

If you’re going to get on here and take potshots at the bloggers and tell them to “get the f outta here” because you think they don’t know what they’re talking about, then you’d better be ready to get called on it–especially when you spell the guy’s name four different ways. It’s Bob (not Rob or Rod) Rathbun (not Rathburn). And he’s still a shameless boot-licker for the Hawks.

For all you complaining about our current broadcasting crew, if you recall the John Sterling days, you would have dumped the TV broadcasts long ago. Sterling became very annoying at the end of games pumping up the home team being ‘nitty gritty’.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mV3ENcW5mY

This guy’s voice ruined the best run in Atlanta Hawks’ history. And for Slim, here’s Clyde by Sterling’s side.
Sterling says Spud coming in the game and we’re only going to be faster, than 2 min later, Clyde comments how much slower we’ll be with Moses and Koncak in the game at the same time.

Good stuff.

Steve Holman is very bad at describing the game, misses calls, has a xenophobic attitude, actually despises certain players (Dwayne Wade for one) and really is a poor representative for the Hawks. Plus, he does not really seem to be connected to what is going on. It would be a great benefit for the Hawks to exhibit some intelligence. Ryan Cameron also sucks, altho if he could tone down his “offensive” comments, he might be tolerable. Basketball is the game, not a bad circus act.

Really, we can chuckle and tolerate and enjoy mediocrity or we can demand intelligent, hardworking, competent people who actually do their jobs and radiate success and honesty and if not winning, at least competing and showing brains and guts. Might as well have an announcer who can do that as well.

First off Let me say that any body who is dissatisfied will Al Horford’s lack of performance, as many of you are, will be classified by me as either a hater or a troll, well in some cases both.

Why?

The logic escapes me now but, Go hawks.

Now back to you haters and trolls. I cant fully understand why you arent excited about a center who can play power forward having career numbers of 12 pt 9 rebounds. That excites the hell out of me.

You need to Join our cult and worship Al like Sautee, Ashole Joe.and myself. While its true we are a minority cult we will grow if you join us. All we ask is that you call all the bloggers on this site who are calling for Al to be traded, “haters” and anyone who is critical of Al’s weak game a “troll” then you can be one of us.

According to the GRAND POOTBUTT Sautee. Our continuing 2012 strategy of defending the many many criticisms of Al’s disgusting performances is to Attack Josh. And while its true that Josh had nothing to do with Al’s poor performance its important for us to attack Josh to help Al.

Why?

The logic escapes me now but lets move on.

Now, A lot of you have been comparing Jon Koncak with Al Horford. That may be a good comparison Although the defensive number favor Koncak and the offensive numbers Al however they are both over paid.

Trading Al now while there is still some value to his name would be the wisest move the hawks can make. It makes since to trade Al now. Zaza and Ivan proved we havent missed Al one bit… And he could have kept that playoff fart. I think we would have done better if Al had just stayed home. He messed it up for the rest of the guys. I thought Al was going to be traded with Marvin Williams.

Yes, let’s build around Josh, Devin, and Jefferson, since Milsap/Favors, Devin, and Jefferson didn’t even win a playoff game last year despite Milsap/Favors combing for 23+ pts, 20+ rebounds, and 4 blocks.

Let me set the record straight.

I like Al, but his 2010/12 softness made me fear weary.

2011/12 come back for the playoffs made me hopeful.

Hope does not mean trust. Until I can’t trust Al as guy with heart/dog I prefer Josh’s antics.

Josh’s antics would go away with proper coaching, Al’s eventual-yet-to-be-confirmed lack of dog can’t be coached back.

If Al got back to his Boss Al mode (coping it with his midrange game) I would extend him for life as a Hawk at this price.

VALVA4-I don’t see how in the devil you can call Horford soft after the players and coaches who’ve competed and coached against him made him a 2 time All Starand 1 time All NBA selection in his 1st 4yrs. He’s successfully utilized what has become one of the NBAs most efficient and effective midrange jumpshots, along with being a better than average rebounder, passer and defender.

You seem to have an extremely one dimensional idea of how an OC is supposed to play the position. He’s not a banger, but nevertheless, he’s obviously been very effective at how he plays the postion, as evidence by the recognition he’s received from his peers. Their opinion of him certainly differs from yours, and certain others as well.

vava74

Ken,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

What I saw was Horford progressively play more and more away from the basket and bang less and less and getting punked in the playoffs by Bass, Gibson, Boozer… and honestly that is not what I want to see from my C.

His midrange game is a good tool but it comes exclusively out of ball rotation and with his feet set, hence we will not be able to depend from it if defenses locked on him, in particular in the playoffs.

That’s why he should bang and then get some shots from midrange here and there. Not the other way round.

Im been a Hawks fan all my life and I must admit I dont get this “Boss AL” VS “Soft AL” debate. I know back in the 2010 playoffs where this “Soft AL” label seem to have originated from, Al didnt have a great series. But can we really give him that label based on that series? Al was hurt most of last year so I wont judge Al having gone soft based on that last year. I just prefer to see AL as the same player, a guy who is willing to do what it takes to win. Whether it be doing the dirty work or making jump shots.

AG,

Kareem was a finesse player who had ACTUAL FINESSE.

Apart from his unstoppable skyhook, he had other post moves, great footwork, etc. The comparison is beyond lame.

Horford does not have the post game, nor even the face up game to be a finesse player. Horford is an excellent midrange shooter when OPEN, which is something that does not happen in the playoffs.

Read above again and carefully and you’ll understand.

Horford shied away from contact on both series in 2010/11 and his midrange shot was basically taken away.

There’s a Boss Al, that got 12ppg mostly battling down low and there is soft Al that got 16ppg mostly with midrange shots.

In order to be effective in the playoffs Al has to get back into the paint and get the buckets with putbacks, backdoor cuts and hustle.

If he does that he will not be as predictable and will gain more space for his midrange game.

Q&A with Lang Greene:

Judy
What’s up Lang? It has been ages -anyway here are my questions:
1. Will the Hawks make the playoffs? 2. Do you think that Ferry is really going to keep Josh Smith long term? I think that depending on how Josh plays up to the trade deadline Ferry will determine if he is a keeper or not. Thoughts?
3. Is Teague ready to be floor leader, will LD trust him to run the offense? 4. Does LD last the entire season?
5. Have the players been getting together and playing, running voluntary practicising, etc?
6. Is everybody in shape?

Lang Greene
Long time J …

1. Yes I think the Hawks can get a 7-8 seed.
2. I think Ferry is possibly interested in locking Josh up, not completely sure though. I need to be around the situation a little more. Everything I heart from both sides say all is good … but you know how that goes.
3. Yes, indeed. Teague is ready.
4. Yes. He’s in his last year so the true question is does he receive an extension …

Honestly I’d trust ESPN(not to much) before I trust most people on this blog like seriously you guys say let’s trade Horford for A,B,C,D and yet don’t think for a second.

Just like the others saying trade Josh Smith putting a foot in your mouth and letting words come out. SMH

Look Al Horford last season was injured for 77% of the season came back for the playoffs, but even I knew it wasn’t meant to be although in the playoffs he went beast mode for us. He wasn’t at 100% still people are going to believe what they want.

If Al Horford were the #1 option without Joe and Josh on the team having the same players around him even last year we’d still be in the playoffs kind of like with Josh we’d still beat the teams we need to beat, but get our butts handed to us by teams like Boston and others like them.

We are better off going into this season with both Josh and Al then we are without one or the other it’s like having a one-two punch.

Very sneaky signing for the Hawks. VALVA74-I agree that everyone has and deserves an opinion, but I certainly hope you don’t really believe that BS you handed me in your 9:57am post. What in the hell does banging have to do with scoring pts? Collins and Dampier could bang, but that certainly didn’t help them become better scorers did it?

Back when the Pistons played the Lakers for the NBA title, which the Pistons won, the Lakers brass felt that Ben Wallace out played Shaq to the point where you could say he punked Shaq. In fact, the Lakers Brass were so certain of that fact that they traded his butt. Based on that fact, and your way of thinking, would you say Shaq was soft? Come on man, get real.

Based on your way of thinking an OC should play, or least he be considered soft, many outstanding OCs, some in the HOF and in the top 50 of all time, like Jabbar, DRobinson, BWalton, NThurman, ZBeatty, DIssel, DMutombo, and VDivac, or midrange jumpshooters like EHayes, PEwing, DCowans, BLanier, RParrish, and BMcAdoo, would be considered soft.

vava74

September 24th, 2012

Ken,

You need to either bang or have SUPERLATIVE offensive skills to win in the playoffs.

Horford does not have sufficient offensive skills to be effective in the playoffs.

And, some of the guys you mentioned above were not either good enough offensively or did not bang enough to get it done in the playoffs.

Horford is a fine player, but he needs to BANG, to contribute to a level which will make us successful.

He is not Dirk, nor Lamarcus offensively. He has an excellent SET SHOT and little else offensively if he does not hustle using his mobility and speed.

Ray

September 24th, 2012
8:02 am

Like I said this stuff gets far out of hand with Horford.

I love Josh you know I realize Horford ain’t on Josh’s level defensively, but offensively unless smith going to the hole every play then I’d take Horford with the set shot plus going to the hole over him.

Yeah Josh can dunk and all that crap, but as we see withn Blake Griffin it takes more than flashy dunks win a game you’ll get a highlight every night, but at the end of the day he won’t be bringing home a ring.

As much as everyone talks about Horford again we don’t know what his stats would have been had he stayed healthy all season.

Look if you want to call him soft fine, but the way I see it he’s a good player on this team.

vava74

September 24th, 2012
8:54 am

Ray,

Never said that he was not a good player. Merely that he is limited offensively and that he can’t create his own shot.

Josh has significant problems as well, namely when he settles for long jump shots but he definitively has more moves around the rim beyond dunks.

He is a powerhouse offensively? No, but he is a better option to close games since he can also create for others, being an excellent passer off double teams.

Obviously, Horford should be on of his best targets since they seem to mesh well down low playing a two man game, but we definitively need Horford to get more aggressive and understand that his set shot will not be open during the playoffs and against top teams.

Everyone around here that have been pulling their hair off when JJ floundered against top grade defenses and in the playoffs MUST know that if those same defenses focus on Horford HE WILL NOT GET A SINGLE SHOT OFF.

Failing to understand this is a huge mistake. Horford can’t be a #1 or #2 offensive option, he must bang and get shots out of other guys getting double teamed.

Does that make Horford a Jon Koncak? Obviously not, but it does not make him untradeable either.

Astro Joe

September 24th, 2012
9:14 am

vava, “he can’t create his own shot”. That is very true. But, IMO, a team that has nothing but “shot creators” in doomed to fail. I enjoyed watching Childress play for the hawks. A lot of times, when he scored 15+ points, the Hawks won. because Childress earned his points through his own hustle and from his teammates finding him in those spots near the rim that no other Hawk can seem to find with a GPS and flashlight. So when Childress scored, it typically meant that a player was hustling and the team was passing. And those are “intangibles” that often result in wining basketball. Put a bunch of “I can do it myself” guys on the floor and you’re more likely to get an awful team.

I don;t think a 6′10″ player needs to apologize that he can’t get his own shot. That is far closer to being the rule than the exception for guys that size. If Teague, Devin and Lou are the penetrators we think and will draw help defense, then Al should be fine taking a bunch of open 12-15 footers. Remember, Al has never played with penetrators like this before… I’m guessing that he has played less than 25 games with Teague as the starting PG.

I don’t like Horford a lot either, but to say he’s soft as charmin tissue is overdone in fact like I said as much as people bash ESPN I’d rather listen to them speak then a lot of people on this blog.

In case you all didn’t see the final ranking for all of the Hawks. This is good stuff to initiate sports talk debates. The accuracy is only as good as how high they ranked your favorite player(s). If they ranked 98% of the players correctly, but missed on your “boys”, then the ranking is crap. Likewise, if they hailed your fav players as the greatest ever and missed on 98% of the rest of the NBA, then they are “right on target”.

AJ,

The Childress example is a very good one. How useful would be Childress in the playoffs if his jump shot became very reliable when he was open?

Still useful, but probably not to the point he proved to be on that Celtics series when he looked like a possessed demon hustling after loose balls, doing back door cuts, etc.

The same is applicable to Horford. I hope that he realizes that his shot will not be there when defenses start to focus more on him and that he gets back to work under the rim using his speed and agility to get past slower opponents (Centers, not PFs).

“Horford does not have sufficient offensive skills to be effective in the playoffs” – vava74

So 15.3 ppg is not “effective”? What would it take? How many points did the centers for the Heat average? The centers for the Thunder?

vava doesn’t have sufficient thinking skills to be an effective blogger ;-)

well no nfl updates on qb’s today. wonder why.

kind of expect some of the negativism to clear in a similar way if the hawks get off to a reasonable start. expectations, realistic ones anyway, cant be too great with this group pulled together. i expect a surprise to the upside. i havent made that bet with my money for tix though. ;-)

then again, i cant expect reason on here either sometimes. ;-) set the bar low, no disappointments either way.

When training camp starts, there will definitely be some serious battles going on at various starting positions. Here’s what I mean.
1-who do you think will win the battle for the starting SF position? The candidates so far are James, Anderson, Morrow and Korver, with a definite possibility of JSmith being a candidate. A while back I mentioned the possibility of IJohnson being a potential candidate for the position.
2-Who do you believe will get the nod at PG between Teague and Harris? Unless Harris simply blows Teague away during camp, I believe it will be Teague, because even though both will be FAs after the season, Teague will a RFA, which makes him much easier to resign than Harris.
3-who do you think will win the SG battle? The candidates at this point are Morrow, Williams, Jenkins, and maybe Korver. While Jenkins is a rookie, potentially he’s definitely the more prolific shooter and scorer of the bunch, and he also adds some size to the position. He reminds me so much of Reggie Miller when he cane out of college. Like Jenkins, Reggie was considered a prolific shooter and scorer that wasn’t very athletic, couldn’t create his own shot, wasn’t a very good ball handler, couldn’t play DEF, couldn’t penetrate or get to the FT line etc, and look at how that turned out.
4-If KBenson is invited to camp, now that JWilliams has been waived, who do you think would win a backup position at OC between Petro and Benson?
Just food for thought. What do you think?

“Joe Johnson is Somehow the Sixth Highest Paid NBA Player in History”

“Johnson’s current contract is so horrendous that it makes it seem like the Hawks might have gotten the upper hand in their trade with the Nets. And trust me, it’s pretty hard to say that a team has an upper hand in a trade when they receive Johan Petro as part of the deal.”

LOL!

That brings me to my next point, Why haven’t we waved Johan Petro yet!? He’s like the Royal Ivey of Centr’s. Dude SUCKS but still has a job? Does Good ole Ricky boy have something to do with this? We could use that roster spot on someone with actual upside like Mickael Pietrus, Keith Benson, or Hassaan Whiteside.

vava, I agree. But clearly, the Hawks don’t currently have any players that can “lead them” into a deep playoff run. That’s why (presumably) we cleared cap space and added a bunch of stale bags of chips to the current roster.

New OC is doing a great job playing to his strengths though and mixing it up. Kudos to the coaching staff!

Sautee,

Last year no one expected him to show up. The Celts simply did not scout and prepared for him.

Let’s look at a better sample: 2010/11, when ORL and CHI prepared to play him:

2010-11 ATL G12 Min468 ppg 11.3 FG% .423 FT%.769 rpg 9.6 apg3.5 stl 0.4 blk 1.0

Sautee,

When the Celts finally prepared for Horford, they got 7 turnovers from him. Others made also negative contributions. I am not saying that the 7 turnovers were THE factor.

Merely that it corroborates that Horford is not a go to guy.

AJ,

And that is why Horford should be considered a tradeable asset: if we could get a lottery pick for him or a player which suited us better (in case he does not find his dog again), we should consider it.

But in the end, that is not my battle. My battle is getting a pair of skates under LD’s feet.

Ken,

1 & 3 should be settled in training camp. I personally would prefer two shooters on the wings, which would allow us to see what Teague, Josh & Al can do offensively under maximum spacing.

2 – I have a little stronger feelings about this one. Teague will be a restricted free agent next summer. I want to know what Teague can do when he has the ball in his hands for the majority of our possessions. Can he run this offense? Devin Harris has been in this league what, 7 or 8 years??? I know what he’s capable of. He’s probably not going to get any better than he already is.

4 – I don’t see Benson making this roster, and Petro’s $3.5M expiring contract could make for a valuable trade asset at the deadline. Petro wins by default. I do think that Benson & Pape Sy will probably be camp invites as extra bodies.

vava, I doubt that Ferry considers any of these players untradeable. My guess is that he would trade anyone on the current roster for the right player. Trading Horofrd for just a lottery pick doesn’t make sense unless you know the player you’re selecting. I wouldn’t trade a top 35 player for just any lottery pick. Let’s see, 14 lottery picks over the past 8 years means 112 players… meaning that more than a handful were no where in the vicinity of being worthy of trading a top 35 player with 3-5 years of prime play still to come. Imagine trading Horford for Wesley Johnson, Jimmer Fredette or Patrick O’Bryant?

IMO, if the Hawks add another player to the roster, it will either be a SF or a PG… I don’t see Benson getting a shot. And I doubt that Teague has any competition to start the season as the Hawks PG… he could always lose it into the season, but I think there are only 2 battles for starting positions… SG and SF.

AJ,

Deals can be made on picks which are known (position). It’s a gamble, but like everything in life, sometimes a gamble pays off.

As you certainly know, I was all for GETTING A REAL COACH, rather than blowing up the core before getting a shot at getting it to be coached properly.

Evaluating the true value of JT+JJ+MW+JS+AH+ZP with Woody and LD is just like evaluating a Le Mans’ car with an every day driver on the seat.

It was not the best Le Mans’ car out there, but surely someone with driving skills would have driven it faster and longer.

And, I actually have faith that both Damion Jones and James Anderson have NBA talent and could make the roster (with Jones being the most likely).

I think we have too many shooter and too few workers.

Even if any of the two or even both neither stick during training camp due to roster difficulties, I see Ferry talking to them and asking them to keep their spirits up, recover their health and their games in the D-League and eventually get picked up after some trades release roster spots.

I see Korver, Harris and Stevenson as trade bait.

Free agent forward Jamario Moon believes he’s the logical choice to help fill the small forward void and clearly makes it known the Hawks are an organization he’d like to play for in 2012-13. “Atlanta makes sense to me,” Moon told HOOPSWORLD on where he would fit best. “Danny was the general manager when I was playing for Cleveland and [Hawks assistant general manager] Wes Wilcox was there too. They already know me and what I bring. It just makes sense.” HoopsWorld

Atlanta Hawks, Free Agency, Jamario Moon | share

Moon has career averages of 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds on 46 percent shooting in 286 games over five seasons. In 157 career starts, Moon has averaged 7.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. The veteran forward has been working out in Atlanta during the offseason and says he’s ready to get back on the court and is in great shape. “All they have to do is give me a call,” Moon said. “I’m ready to work and do whatever the coaching staff asks of me.” HoopsWorld

Doc,

I think the new OC and the new O-line coach has been working wonders for the Falcons offense. And Matt Ryan is finally taking advantage of his weapons.

The biggest knock on him is not that he hasnt won a playoff game…imo, it’s that he has not played well in a playoff game. But I think he gets the monkey off his back this season.

And I think the Falcons will win their first playoff game.
