Hawks re-sign Ivan Johnson

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks re-signed restricted free agent Ivan Johnson Tuesday.

The Hawks extended Johnson a qualifying offer this summer to retain salary-matching rights if he had signed an offer sheet with another team. Under NBA rules, Johnson’s offer was for one year and worth about $966,000 guaranteed. The offer, unless extended, would have expired on Oct. 1.

Last season, as a rookie, Johnson averaged 6.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 16.7 minutes in 56 games off the bench. The forward led the Hawks with a .513 field goal percentage.

The 28-year-old tied for sixth among NBA rookies with three double-doubles. He was third in field goal percentage, 14th in rebounds and 18th in points for first-year players. He was named the Rookie of the Month for April in the Eastern Conference.

Johnson was a surprise addition to Atlanta’s roster last season after a strong training camp.He had his career derailed by a wayward college career and anger-management issues, including a ban from the Korean Basketball League.Johnson quickly became a fan favorite because of his powerful build, menacing appearance and physical style. He became a productive rotation player for the Hawks after injuries to Al Horford and Jason Collins thinned the frontcourt.

Johnson’s temper did get him into trouble on a couple occasions. Coach Larry Drew sent Johnson home from a game in Orlando and fined him after Johnson argued with teammates on the bench. The NBA also fined Johnson $25,000 for giving fans the middle finger while leaving the court following Atlanta’s final playoff loss to Boston.

Glad Ivan is back. I’m looking forward to watching what should be a formidable and diverse set of bigs in Al, Josh, Zaza and Ivan.

Still hard to understand how his 11 points and 6 boards earned him Rookie of the Month honors in April.

Big Ivan from San Antonio is going to hold it down for the bench. Stay rugged, Ivan – surprised the Spurs did not try to sign him for cheap.

FTPB,

“Rev, you do know Peyton just comeback from a career if not life threatening neck injury?”

“To be out of work for so long and play like he has is remarkable in itself. ” – slimjr

Yeah, to not play all season and then come back, you’d have to be surprised how well he played. Wait… who else does that remind us of? ;-)

YES! It’s funny more and more I’m thinking we’re going to be better than most people realize everyone always talking about we lost Joe Johnson means we’re complete ish now.

When the reality is Joe Johnson became pretty bad after awhile anyways.

Our new Big 3 in Teague, Josh, and Horford is something I can get behind and I’m not trying to start any arguments I’m just saying you got to be optimistic more than ever.

I have said on more than one occasion in the past that Vivlamore likes a bit of scandal. He tends to go out of his way to stir up controversy. The above paragraph is another case in point.

I wonder, however, if Vivlamore would have posted that last paragraph if training camp were in session and he had to be in the same room as Ivan.

FTPB,

Slim,

I’m a Matt Ryan fan because he is the Falcons quarterback, just like I was a Kirk Hinrich fan because he was a Hawks player. (I couldn’t bring myself to use Marvin Williams in the analogy).

I wish him well because I want the Falcons to succeed. But I’m not “riding his jock”. I thought the article I posted was provocative because it proposed that Ryan was the successor to Peyton. Ryan hasn’t won a playoff game. Falcons didn’t even score offensively in last year’s playoffs. Its ludicrous to suggest that Ryan is the second coming of Peyton Manning.

With Ivan signed and JWilliams waived, we now have a 15 man roster, although that could change before the season starts, especially if we invite KBenson and he shows well. How many of you think JJenkins has a chance of winning the starting SG spot? Depending on who wins the SF battle, especially if its DJames, his deadly shooting could really open things up.

Starting him would also solidify our backup positions, especially at PG. I posted a scouting report on DJames, which was done before his foot injury, and he seems to be exactly what Ferry is looking for at SF. He’s strong and physical inside, aggressive on the boards, especially the OFF boards, finishes strong, and has a decent midrange gm.

Having a deadeye shooter like Jenkins feed the post would make it almost impossible to double team the post.

Only 9 teams have won Championships in the last 33 years.
So; I reckon, between 800 to 900 teams have been overly optimistic
at the beginning of each season.

Accounting for expansion – I figure it`s been at least 800 years
w/o championships for most teams.

Wait a minute … 30 teams minus expansion X 33 + years w/o a `ship ?

I ain`t real good with arithmatic !

Is it 8-900 years or 8-900 teams w/o a championship ?

Okay … there`s the Hwks @ 45 … the Clips @ ? the Buffalo Braves @ ?

Now I`ve lost count again !

Now Slimjr … does it count if the lakers win in Minneapolis ?
Do they get to carry it over to LA ?
So do we get to count the one in St Louis ?

Just curious ?

Or … what if … Pistol Pete, Dr. J, and David Thompson
had all played together in Atlanta [could have happened]
would we have been the original ” Lob City ” ?

With respects to Emily Litella … ” never mind ” !

Assuming there won’t be any significant trades, we’ll enter the season with a very talented roster. We’ll have
1-3 premere 3pt shooters(Jenkins, Korver, Morrow)
2-3 of the NBAs fastest, quickest and most athletic SG/PGs(DHarris, LWilliams, JTeague)
3-one of the NBAs premere PFs(JSmith)
4-one of the NBAs premere OCs(AHorford)
5-one of the NBAs top backup OCs(ZPachulia)
6-one of the NBAs top backup PFs(IJohnson)
7-one of the NBAs top 6th men(LWilliams)

If we can come up with a solid SF, we’ll have a top 2 seed playoff team.

Ken, I hope Drew lets the guys compete rather than give them jobs (Bibby over Teague) (Williams over Evans)(Williams over Crawford) etc., If Jenkins is the best SG – let him start. The same with Ivan at SF. I wouldn’t mind Jenkins starting and Lou getting at least 30 min at SG. I don’t see much of a role for Korver

I’m more on the side of us being better too. I think everybody is glad that the “Contract” and the “Bust” are out of town. We still need a quality small forward but the rest of the team looks good. Hoping all these three point shooters will slow Smoove down on his outside (or lack thereof) jump shot.

I think Josh will alter his game – he has to. I would like to see Jenkins earn the starting spot. That will take a lot of pressure off of him. Then Lou off the bench, but play major minutes. He will be the first off the bench.

I hope LD does not fall in love with Harris. I am a big JT0 fan- and I hope he continues to play well. I have posted before I expect big seasons from Al, Josh, Teague and Lou.

In Ryan’s defense, Peyton didn’t win a playoff game until his 6th year, when he went to the AFC Championship Game. With that said, out of all the Super Bowl winning QBs in the league, Peyton easily took the longest to get to that point. So if Ryan is going to reach that level 5+ years into his career, he’s going to have to follow Peyton’s footsteps in that respect.

I think Jenkins COULD start if he shows it in summer camp, practices, & pre season games that he has out worked Harris for the #2 spot. Not needing for him to play long minutes but I believe at least starting him will give him guaranteed court time to contribute towards the team.

Why start Harris at the 2? Morrow, Jenkins, and Lou are better scorers? We need the starting 2 to be a outside threat.

funny how we use that as a measure of greatness in qb’s like it is all them. to be rationale, guess at some time i need to go back and concoct a list of all the qb’s in super bowls vs those that never made it but had great careers and see what we are really talking about. some of them never did anything beyond that.

would anyone want sanchez here instead of ryan, though he has gone a lot further than the qb of our team. is chris miller really that much better than ryan? even the great qb from denver had a lot of downers and disappointments before he achieved greatness by some people’s narrow standard. this discussion continues over to basketball of course. sometimes it is being in the right place at the right time and that is all it boils down to.

good that ivan was signed but this was reported way before ajc did.

also it is an atrocity that horford is being compared to jon koncack. horford is a much better player than koncack. koncack had a bad contract and a much worse game.

i have given up on stating reasons why horford isnt a bad player and is a solid player. some just dont like horford as a player just based on some of their reasons. he is who he is. slmjr doesnt like him. not gonna convince him otherwise.
i have heard on this blog that josh smith is a better player than shawn kemp was. i dont see it.

I finally changed my starting lineup for opening night with the roster as-is.
PG-Teague SG-Williams SF-Korver PF-Smith C-Horford
I like that lineup because that is our best offensive players at each position and no one can focus on 1 single guy to shut down because that is too much collective offense to handle. I realize Lou and Korver are our weaker defenders but we will be athletic enough to force bad shots. I orginally wanted Jeff Lou Josh Al ZaZa to start but I think there’d be a lack of offensive flow and our bench would be pretty weak. With Korver starting we can let ZaZa and Ivan come in for our bigs and Devin Harris can rotate at the 1 and 2 more often. I like John Jenkins but he will not play much until after the all-star break when he can observe the game first hand a bit more. If morrow is still on the team along with Stevenson and Petro they will be role plyers playing on appropriate matchups. We will be around the 48-34 mark and i’d think a top 5 seed.

I find it interesting that people can give John Jenkins a potential starting nod on this level w/o him playing a game or practice against a full pro team. Summer league is rookies, sophomores & guys trying to make the NBA.

While the record might not be much different by the end of the season, roles will have to change significantly for all the returning Hawks w/o Joe & Marvin. In addition to getting used to the new guys, the old guys will get a different (higher) level of attention from defenses without Joe. Losing both Joe & Marvin will change the defensive dynamic significantly. Josh is the only guy left that logged any meaningful minutes at SF last year. I suspect whoever gets those (defensive) SF minutes will determine a lot about the Hawks record this season.

My one defense of Matt Ryan; Peyton was 0-3 before he won his 1st playoff game. Peyton is a 4 time MVP, more than anyone else.
Ryan has had how many offensive coordinators in his time here? There needs to be stablility there as well.

Now, for any of you who think Jenkins is going to start? What part of Larry Drew have you not seen? Are you expecting a new and improved Larry Drew? Really? Everyone here says Drew has one more year here, so how is a coach deemed done after this one year deal, how does a coach say okay, let’s develop the young guys and make them better in the long run?
We have Josh on a 1 year deal.
We have Zaza on a 1 year deal.
We have basically the entire roster on 1 year deals, save 3 guys.

I like Jenkins too, but I’ve seen LD operate.

You know who should be starting? The guys you’ve invested the most.

No one sees Stevenson getting any minutes.
No one sees Morrow starting.

I like some of the guys we have brought in, but I also saw how LD treated Teague. IMO, Jenkins will get more DNPs than he does GPlayed.
Especially if there is some success with the vets we have.

1) Williams
2) Stevenson, if we need to emphasize defense.
3) Korver
4) Morrow
5) Jenkins

That is my current SG depth chart.
