Hawks re-sign Ivan Johnson

Vivlamore reporting.

The Hawks re-signed restricted free agent Ivan Johnson Tuesday.

The Hawks extended Johnson a qualifying offer this summer to retain salary-matching rights if he had signed an offer sheet with another team. Under NBA rules, Johnson’s offer was for one year and worth about $966,000 guaranteed. The offer, unless extended, would have expired on Oct. 1.

Last season, as a rookie, Johnson averaged 6.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 16.7 minutes in 56 games off the bench. The forward led the Hawks with a .513 field goal percentage.

The 28-year-old tied for sixth among NBA rookies with three double-doubles. He was third in field goal percentage, 14th in rebounds and 18th in points for first-year players. He was named the Rookie of the Month for April in the Eastern Conference.

Johnson was a surprise addition to Atlanta’s roster last season after a strong training camp.He had his career derailed by a wayward college career and anger-management issues, including a ban from the Korean Basketball League.Johnson quickly became a fan favorite because of his powerful build, menacing appearance and physical style. He became a productive rotation player for the Hawks after injuries to Al Horford and Jason Collins thinned the frontcourt.

Johnson’s temper did get him into trouble on a couple occasions. Coach Larry Drew sent Johnson home from a game in Orlando and fined him after Johnson argued with teammates on the bench. The NBA also fined Johnson $25,000 for giving fans the middle finger while leaving the court following Atlanta’s final playoff loss to Boston.

Glad Ivan is back. I’m looking forward to watching what should be a formidable and diverse set of bigs in Al, Josh, Zaza and Ivan.

Still hard to understand how his 11 points and 6 boards earned him Rookie of the Month honors in April.

YES! It’s funny more and more I’m thinking we’re going to be better than most people realize everyone always talking about we lost Joe Johnson means we’re complete ish now.

When the reality is Joe Johnson became pretty bad after awhile anyways.

Our new Big 3 in Teague, Josh, and Horford is something I can get behind and I’m not trying to start any arguments I’m just saying you got to be optimistic more than ever.

I have said on more than one occasion in the past that Vivlamore likes a bit of scandal. He tends to go out of his way to stir up controversy. The above paragraph is another case in point.

I wonder, however, if Vivlamore would have posted that last paragraph if training camp were in session and he had to be in the same room as Ivan.

FTPB,

Slim,

I’m a Matt Ryan fan because he is the Falcons quarterback, just like I was a Kirk Hinrich fan because he was a Hawks player. (I couldn’t bring myself to use Marvin Williams in the analogy).

I wish him well because I want the Falcons to succeed. But I’m not “riding his jock”. I thought the article I posted was provocative because it proposed that Ryan was the successor to Peyton. Ryan hasn’t won a playoff game. Falcons didn’t even score offensively in last year’s playoffs. Its ludicrous to suggest that Ryan is the second coming of Peyton Manning.

With Ivan signed and JWilliams waived, we now have a 15 man roster, although that could change before the season starts, especially if we invite KBenson and he shows well. How many of you think JJenkins has a chance of winning the starting SG spot? Depending on who wins the SF battle, especially if its DJames, his deadly shooting could really open things up.

Starting him would also solidify our backup positions, especially at PG. I posted a scouting report on DJames, which was done before his foot injury, and he seems to be exactly what Ferry is looking for at SF. He’s strong and physical inside, aggressive on the boards, especially the OFF boards, finishes strong, and has a decent midrange gm.

Having a deadeye shooter like Jenkins feed the post would make it almost impossible to double team the post.

Only 9 teams have won Championships in the last 33 years.
So; I reckon, between 800 to 900 teams have been overly optimistic
at the beginning of each season.

Accounting for expansion – I figure it`s been at least 800 years
w/o championships for most teams.

Wait a minute … 30 teams minus expansion X 33 + years w/o a `ship ?

I ain`t real good with arithmatic !

Is it 8-900 years or 8-900 teams w/o a championship ?

Okay … there`s the Hwks @ 45 … the Clips @ ? the Buffalo Braves @ ?

Now I`ve lost count again !

Now Slimjr … does it count if the lakers win in Minneapolis ?
Do they get to carry it over to LA ?
So do we get to count the one in St Louis ?

Just curious ?

Or … what if … Pistol Pete, Dr. J, and David Thompson

Assuming there won’t be any significant trades, we’ll enter the season with a very talented roster. We’ll have
1-3 premere 3pt shooters(Jenkins, Korver, Morrow)
2-3 of the NBAs fastest, quickest and most athletic SG/PGs(DHarris, LWilliams, JTeague)
3-one of the NBAs premere PFs(JSmith)
4-one of the NBAs premere OCs(AHorford)
5-one of the NBAs top backup OCs(ZPachulia)
6-one of the NBAs top backup PFs(IJohnson)
7-one of the NBAs top 6th men(LWilliams)

If we can come up with a solid SF, we’ll have a top 2 seed playoff team.

Ken, I hope Drew lets the guys compete rather than give them jobs (Bibby over Teague) (Williams over Evans)(Williams over Crawford) etc., If Jenkins is the best SG – let him start. In Ryan’s defense, Peyton didn’t win a playoff game until his 6th year, when he went to the AFC Championship Game. With that said, out of all the Super Bowl winning QBs in the league, Peyton easily took the longest to get to that point. So if Ryan is going to reach that level 5+ years into his career, he’s going to have to follow Peyton’s footsteps in that respect.

funny how we use that as a measure of greatness in qb’s like it is all them. to be rationale, guess at some time i need to go back and concoct a list of all the qb’s in super bowls vs those that never made it but had great careers and see what we are really talking about. some of them never did anything beyond that.

would anyone want sanchez here instead of ryan, though he has gone a lot further than the qb of our team. is chris miller really that much better than ryan? even the great qb from denver had a lot of downers and disappointments before he achieved greatness by some people’s narrow standard. this discussion continues over to basketball of course. sometimes it is being in the right place at the right time and that is all it boils down to.

I finally changed my starting lineup for opening night with the roster as-is.
PG-Teague SG-Williams SF-Korver PF-Smith C-Horford
I like that lineup because that is our best offensive players at each position and no one can focus on 1 single guy to shut down because that is too much collective offense to handle. I realize Lou and Korver are our weaker defenders but we will be athletic enough to force bad shots. I orginally wanted Jeff Lou Josh Al ZaZa to start but I think there’d be a lack of offensive flow and our bench would be pretty weak. With Korver starting we can let ZaZa and Ivan come in for our bigs and Devin Harris can rotate at the 1 and 2 more often. I like John Jenkins but he will not play much until after the all-star break when he can observe the game first hand a bit more. If morrow is still on the team along with Stevenson and Petro they will be role plyers playing on appropriate matchups. We will be around the 48-34 mark and i’d think a top 5 seed.

I find it interesting that people can give John Jenkins a potential starting nod on this level w/o him playing a game or practice against a full pro team. Summer league is rookies, sophomores & guys trying to make the NBA.

While the record might not be much different by the end of the season, roles will have to change significantly for all the returning Hawks w/o Joe & Marvin. In addition to getting used to the new guys, the old guys will get a different (higher) level of attention from defenses without Joe. Losing both Joe & Marvin will change the defensive dynamic significantly. Josh is the only guy left that logged any meaningful minutes at SF last year. I suspect whoever gets those (defensive) SF minutes will determine a lot about the Hawks record this season.

My one defense of Matt Ryan; Peyton was 0-3 before he won his 1st playoff game. Peyton is a 4 time MVP, more than anyone else.
Ryan has had how many offensive coordinators in his time here? There needs to be stablility there as well.

Now, for any of you who think Jenkins is going to start? What part of Larry Drew have you not seen? Are you expecting a new and improved Larry Drew? Really? Everyone here says Drew has one more year here, so how is a coach deemed done after this one year deal, how does a coach say okay, let’s develop the young guys and make them better in the long run?
We have Josh on a 1 year deal.
We have Zaza on a 1 year deal.
We have basically the entire roster on 1 year deals, save 3 guys.

I like Jenkins too, but I’ve seen LD operate.

You know who should be starting? The guys you’ve invested the most.

No one sees Stevenson getting any minutes.
No one sees Morrow starting.

I like some of the guys we have brought in, but I also saw how LD treated Teague. IMO, Jenkins will get more DNPs than he does GPlayed.
Especially if there is some success with the vets we have.

1) Williams
2) Stevenson, if we need to emphasize defense.
3) Korver
4) Morrow
5) Jenkins

That is my current SG depth chart.

MannyT,

There will be aleast 5 or 6 rookies starting on their new team as well who also played in the summer league against other rookies, sophomores & guys trying to make the NBA. Not really following your point? By Joe Johnson being gone, the starting SG position is UP FOR GRABS! There is NO cut-in-dry person on this team who deserves the starting SG role and I DO believe Jenkins knows that. If he comes into training camp conditioned and highly prepared to start, than Drew would be a NUT to over look yet another guard JUST so he could stay a coach for next season, ESP when you have a GM/BOSS who have already stated he wants these YOUNG guys developed. The only way to PROVE they are DEVELOPED is to test them by training them on the court, not leaving them rotting on the bench.

to all the Teague lovers,

The guy may not survive the year in a Hawks uniform. The league has proven that good point guards are in surplus currently and there will be more value in a player (guard) who can manage situations better when running teams. We are talent-wise comparable to Milwaukee but structure is what will make us a better team. Teague has less experience running offenses than Devin Harris (just a fact) and LD does not have the luxury of worrying about a youngster running his psuedo-offense. Except for an injury, JTO is trade bait, people. Devin Harris is a former All-star who is a true talent and an experienced player. If Devin Harris and Josh Smith click, everybody else’s roster spots will be up for grabs.

I dont see Jenkins starting. LD is gonna play it safe, maybe start Harris or Morrow at SG. But he is a shooter, something Drew likes. I see his role being much like Jordan Crawford was when he was here, mostly sit and watched, when the team needs a lift, maybe come in and see if he can get hot and make a few 3’s. Jenkins will receive a few DNP-CD, but at best 10-12 minutes when he is making shots. Lou will get the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard along with Devin and Morrow getting some.

glw

@tjhook

Im a Teague lover, but not sure what you smokin if you think Teague is trade bait. Devin is most likely a one year rental. Unless he reverts back the all star type he was when he first got to New Jersey (which I seriously doubt). Sure, he is still a solid nba player and can contribute here but the Hawks dont see him as a building block. And as with most professional leagues, its set up for certain players to be successful and players to fit roles, even more so with the economics. In theory, the Hawks would like to see a combo of Teague and Harris work well together. If Teague has a great year, he gets rewarded with a new contract. If Harris has a good year, combined with what he made last year, is gonna want to command more money than the Hawks would want to invest in him. Teague is younger so am sure its better for building the team invest in him.

I agree with glw – but I also agree with tjhook. The way LD has treated JT0, it may be the same when he gave KH the starting job. It will be a lot tougher now since the NBA world has seen JT0 play – although LD can always say he is starting a former All-Star. In any event JT0 has to come to play.

MannyT

1:58 pm

@MsDee,

The answer comes from @glw at12:41 I dont see Jenkins starting. LD is gonna play it safe,

Unless you are a top 5 pick, the odds of starting are extremely low, even if they just traded away the starter in your spot. Coaches are very conservative when it comes to playing young guys…especially when you are in the last year of a contract. (I’m not saying Jenkins is bad; I am saying he was the 23rd pick, not the 3rd pick.)

As evidence, I present http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1177279-20-rookies-who-will-crack-the-starting-lineup-in-their-second-season

Please click on the slide show & note the bolded stat about the number of games these guys started as rookies.

The best exceptions last year were Kawhi Leonard (15th pick) & Ken Faried (22nd pick.) It took Manu Ginobli injury & the most secure coach in the league to get Leonard starts. He was expected to rebound & defend, not score. Similarly in Denver, George Karl is very secure as a coach and he got defense & rebounding out of a rookie, Faried. Jenkins was a good scorer in college. Until he proves it in the pros, I doubt he starts ahead of the shorter guys who can score in the NBA…unless he proves to be a lock down defender (which would be a surprise.)

If he gets 10 starts, there is an epic shock factor in his short term upside or the Hawks are having a “que Charles Barkley” turrible season.

That may be true, brigadierjerry, but with more than too many SG’s as it is, guys such as Morrow and Korver on 1 year rental are sure to be traded. Allowing Jenkins to start, and by the way, THIS IS ONLY IF HE OUT PREFORMS OTHERS IN TRAINING CAMP, PRACTICES, AND PRE-SEASON GAMES, will make decisions even better for Danny to remove access SG weight or not.

MIKE IS BACK-What’s up my man? I know Jenkins is a rookie, but Ferry is in charge now, not Sund, and he’s very big on developing and playing rookies and/or or younger players. Also, Drew is a lame duck HC that definitely has to do things Ferry’s way. And make no mistake, things will be done Ferry’s way.

After all, it was Ferry, not Drew, who said we’ll definitely play an uptempo fastbreaking style of OFF, and that MScott will be on the roster when the season starts. And, it was also Ferry’s decision, not Drew’s, to release 2 of his assistant coaches and establish a player development program.

Ferry drafted Scott and Jenkins, and personally brought in DJames and JAnderson to compete for the SF spot. There’s no way in hell he’s going to let Drew pull the same BS both he and Woodson pulled with previous draft picks and younger players with potential like JTeague and KBenson, in favor of veteran liabilities like MBibby, JCollins, EThomas, and EDampier.

J-You could be right and I could certainly be wrong, but we’ll see. I just don’t think teams like the 76ers, Knicks, Nets, Bulls, Pacers, Wizzards, etc, will be as good as so many seem to think. The Heat is the only team that can come close to matching our speed, quickness, athleticism, and depth. It will be our newfound style of play and approach that gives us our advantage and edge in the East.

This team will no longer have players like JJ and Bibby, who’s limitations limited the way we played, and thus limited the performance and production of the majority of our who are basically geared more toward playing uptempo. Also, this yrs team won’t be burdened with players who can only contribute limited mins and production due to age, lack of athleticism, and/or stamina.

Last yr we had only 1 productive PG(Teague), with Hinrich being basically an unproductive backup. When JJ was moved to SF, Hinrich became a very unproductive SG. This yr, we’ll be at least 3 deep in quality SGs and PGs(Teague, DHarris, LWilliams, JJenkins, AMorrow). This yr we’ll have Zaza, Petro, and maybe Benson as backup OC, all of which are major upgrades over Collins and Dampier.

This yr Zaza will serve as our backup OC where he belongs, rather than serving as our starting OC like last yr. IJohnson will also be our primary backup PF, rather than serving as our primary backup OC, as well as backup PF like last yr. The youth, athleticism, stamina, potential and abilities of Petro and maybe Benson are vast improvements over the aging, injury prone and minimumally productive Dampier and Collins.

Petro and Benson gives us far better rim protection and help DEF, and for a lot more MPG, than Dampier and Collins. I stand by my top 2 seed prediction.

During summer league, Jenkins looked poised and VERY MATURE on the court. So again I say, if he can come around as such with top starters around him during training camp, practices, and pre-season, than he should get the nod to start, esp if Danny plans on letting Morrow and Korver go during the season.

Minor point about limitations. I think Woody led JJ to play slower. Recall how he played in Phoenix. ISO JOE was a Woodson creation. Sure Joe liked it, but he didn’t come here as a ball stopper. The right coach could have produced more uptempo with the same players. (Bibby on the other hand had limitations. He got old.)

Manny, true. My point was that if you only focus on Joe’s “ball movement limitations’ while not considering the different limitations of the new players, then you will not be looking at things from every angle. Just because the new car gets better gas mileage than the old car, it doesn’t mean the new car isn’t smaller or requires more time with the mechanic or requires more expensive parts than the previous car.

Again, trading one set of limitations for another.

ASTRO JOE-Since when did increased speed, quickness, athleticism, depth, talent, shooting and penetrating ability, as well as the ability to play a different and more suitable style of OFF, become liabilities? You seem far too focused on what what has been lost with Marvin and JJs departure. What you should concentrate on is what we’ve gained with Harris, Morrow, Williams, Petro, Jenkins, Scott, Korver, and the return of AHorford.

This whole idea of us coming apart defensively, or having absolutely no one to take the big shots, is way overblown. Didn’t we manage to claim the #3 seed with a gross underachiever at SF(MWilliams), as well as DEF liabilities at SG(JCrawford) and PG(MBibby)? Horford’s absence last yr, and the additional scoring opportunities it allowed, helped Josh improve his overall production.

Well, JJ and Marvin’s absence will allow all of our starters additional scoring opportunities, and we can expect Teague and Horford to show improvement as a result. Not only did we not have a single scorer off the bench that could match LWilliams, AMorrow or DHarris’ OFF production, we barely had 3 starters to do it.

Apparently you can’t for the life of you believe AHorford, as our #2 scoring option, can even come close to approximating JJs 18.8PPG. And what about the return of his double figure rebounding, shotblocking, interior DEF, and passing ability? He’ll replace JJs DEF, as well as his OFF, just in a different way. You simply see a GLASS HALF EMPTY situation, while I see a GLASS HALF FULL SITUATION situation. We’ll see who ends up right in the end.

And Strickland, let me add that I have no problems with the notion that the Hawks may take a step backwards. I have no problem that LD is finishing his final year. I view the upcoming season like watching a high school play audition. I am anxious to see what Ferry does NEXT summer, when he builds a team with several long-term assets. This season is essentially an audition for players and coaches. I expect to see some good auditions and some awful ones. I won’t complain about “same ole Hawks” because, again, this is a neccessary step toward the hope of something bigger and better.

The notion that we would shed contracts AND get better (with the same middling head coach) is a little too much for me to get behind.

To say Jeff Teague is trade bait just because Devin Harris is here it’s the stupidest thing ever. Maybe just one of cause I’ve heard worse.

Listen why would you trade away a potential All-star/Above average PG and keep the PG that you know his windowing is closing if anything Devin Harris is the PG that’s trade bait.

Honestly saying that PG’s are dominating the NBA right now while this maybe so not all can be replaced trying to find one that matches Rondo or Derrick Rose is too darn tough.

Yeah you could say go get Kyle Lowry or Aaron Brooks, but neither one are even remotely close to what Rondo and Rose can do.

Kinda like with the PF’s there are a lot of good one’s, but trying to get another KG isn’t that easy.

Long story short don’t ever say someone job is up for grabs especially if he’s doing pretty good for you. Cause you never know when the next big thing will come along. Matter of fact how many years did it take for us to finally have a legit PG

Delvin is light years a better Point guard than ” I dont know what happened” Teague. In fact, its time for the experiment to end. @Sautee – I refuse to accept the acro-pressure in September. Acro-pressure small needles made of jumbled letters, when inserted under the skin become something useful or dangerous. I think doc has similar tools ;-)

I just came back to the fold after my year of self imposed lockout. The owners locked me out, so I kept my ticket money & finished the job for last season.

@AstroJoe I agree with you. My comment was in response to the same @Ken Strickland post I believe you saw. Forgive me that my typing & blog attention span are still like Peyton Manning in August. (Offseason after a long layoff. Takes time to regain form, but unsure if 100% of the 2012 me is anywhere near 100% of the 2010 me. Blogadociously off center and proud of it!)

@Ken–My agreement w/@Astro is based on a new team with more quickness, but less height and bulk to stand up to the SG/SF position on defense. It’s like the old football trade off, do you want the faster, slimmer player or the slower, heavier/stronger one? You can win (or lose) with either. What Joe did offensively wasn’t because he couldn’t play uptempo, it was because the coaching style of play here led to more halfcourt Iso Joe instead of Westhead Warp Speed.

Teague has more game than Devin at this stage. Devin has done all he’s going to do. Will JT be an all-star? It will have to be this year while DRose is out. Once he comes back, its Rondo and DRose and DWill.
Neither of our guys are AS, but JT has more upside.
And if we get off to a slow start, we should consider trying to get into the lottery next year and add a big piece to next year.

Anyone see us letting Josh walk after this season? What number would Josh settle for? 4/64M?

ASTRO JOE-I agree with your 6:17pm post. While we could very well lose gms by a 110-103 score, we will also win our share of gms by a simular score as well. A loss is a loss and a win is a win, no matter what the score is. No matter how bad you think our DEF might be without JJ, Marvin, and Hinrich, you can’t tell me that Harris, Jenkins, Morrow and Williams are anywhere near the DEF liabilities that Bibby and JaCrawford were.

In fact, after reportedly recovering form shoulder surgery, Hinrich, at 6.6PPG, proved to be an OFF and DEF liability. I just don’t see how we’ll take a step back, unless we fail to find a decent SF, which I believe Ferry will do, or has already done with the signing of James and Anderson.

KevinM,

I think Josh is is a similar, but more favorable position to Coach Drew. Showing what he can do as the primary face of this team will set his market value. If he does a good job and he likes the changes Danny Ferry makes, we can keep him. Otherwise, he walks because that is what he wants to do. Ferry can probably live with it either way, because he will have excellent cap space with all the expiring contracts. If Josh walks, he can go get 2 significant players (if available & they are willing to play here.)

In the new NBA, I think 4/64 gets Josh to stay if he wants to be here.

Ken Strickland

MANNYT-I understand what you’re trying to say with your football analogy, but it fails to get your point across effectively. Whether I would want the slower, bigger, stronger player, or the lighter, faster, more mobile player would depend on the style and scheme I intended to employ.

A bigger, slower, stronger OLineman wouldn’t be much good to me if I intend to run a zone blocking scheme, or if I wanted a DLineman that can effectively generate a more effective pass rush. It might surprise you to know that one of the NBAs shortest and lightest teams won this yrs NBA title(Miami).

The Heat proved that talent, speed, quickness, athleticism, and running a system that takes advantage of those attributes, can trump height. MWilliams was among the NBAs tallest and biggest SFs. In fact, he was as tall and as big as our starting PF and OC, yet that height and size didn’t help him get the job done. Other than the Thunder’s JHardin, can you name another SG that came off the bench and outperformed 6′1″ SG LWilliams last yr?

In last yrs finals, the Thunder’s 6′10″ SF Durant was as tall or taller than the Heats top 10 players, yet they got solidly whipped by the much shorter Heat. Giving up JJs, Marvin’s and Hinrich’s height and size, along with their inability to effectively play in an uptempo style OFF, will give the rest of our Hawk players a chance to play the uptempo style of basketball they are best suited to play.

I spent a good part of my day yesterday checking Philadelphia 76ers blogs, and their fans were basically celebrating that Lou Will wasn’t returning. Common themes I saw among the comments were that Doug Collins pretty much let the guy jack up bad shots, because he was basically the only scorer on the team, and that Lou didn’t really play with the reckless abandon before Collins. They also said that his 20.2 PER from last season was misleading, although I’ll have to look more into that. I think he’s gonna be excellent to have off the bench, but I wonder if we should take heed from the complaints of Philly fans. Hopefully, LD has an answer for his supposedly mediocre shot selection. I haven’t watched the guy play enough outside of Atlanta summer league stuff to form my own opinion though.

Or hopefully being on a team where you’re constantly on the court with 2-3 other guys that can score the ball will change the way he plays.

I’m really interested to see about how Damion James does in camp. Dude was a rebounding machine in college.

@Ray,

I never said that point guards are dominating the NBA; I said that they were currently in surplus so that statement infers that production will ultimately be the dividing line for a coach’s choice on who plays and who goes. Teague is not an outstanding passer despite what people on this board believes and Harris has proven he has the offensive game to put up big baskets (who believes Teague has a 40 point game in him? I do not). With the team doing some tweaking on offense, look to the guy who helps put the ball in the basket more frequently. That would be Harris. Not dissing Teague, but we have the veteran guard LD has always preferred.
We should be looking at what swingman would be good for the team’s offense (Rudy Gay, Harrison Barnes, etc.) once Teague’s name gets mentioned in trade rumors.

Does Teague have a 40-pt game in him? Maybe. His best game last year was against New Orleans, where he scored 24 pts on just 11 shots in 29 minutes. Joe took 15 shots that game, and Willie Green also took 11.

Harris’s last 30-pt game came early in the 10/11 season, where he took 23 shots and played 43 minutes. 4 yrs ago (08/09), Harris had 3 40-pt games, and 9 30-pt games. In each of his 40-pt games, he attempted at least 23 shots and played at least 41 minutes.

Jeff Teague has never attempted 20 shots or more in any professional game. If Teague was in Charlotte or New Orleans or Houston this year, and was allowed to control the ball and take 20+ shots a night, I think he could easily rack up a few 30+ or 40+ games. He had 11 20+ games this past year.

I will say this about Harris and his prior years’ stats. Those 4 years that he was with the Nets (includes partial yrs), they won a total of 104 games. Those were some bad teams.

In a year where his team has made the playoffs, he’s never averaged more than 11 pts per game (3 yrs in Dallas and last yr in Utah), while playing less than 30 minutes per game.

IMO, Harris is a quality backup, not a starter.

Yet, since being separated from CPaul after signing with the Pacers, he’s struggled to average double figure PPG. I’m certain they’re unhappy with his lack of production considering the money they’re paying him.

“who said ivan was a game changer????”

I did. He impacts the game at both ends at three positions. There are few players in the world you can say that about.

“They also said that his 20.2 PER from last season was misleading…”

From what I’ve seen it disproportionately favors volume shooters, which is funny because it’s supposed to be about “efficiency.” I agree that Lou forced a lot of offense because that was what Philly specifically needed from him last year. I don’t think he’s an overly selfish player, but we will find out this year. As I said before, he’s never played with offensive players as talented as Al Horford and Josh Smith so the Hawks don’t need him to force offense like Philly did.

*disclaimer*

When I say *played with* that means, you know, actually PLAYED WITH, not been on the same roster with i.e. Allen Iverson whom he probably was on the court with less than 100 minutes of his career. Yes, Allen Iverson was a more talented offensive player than Josh or Al but that doesn’t mean Iverson and Williams played 20 mpg on the court at the same time.

BUDDY GRIZZARD-If anyone has a MAN CRUSH on MScott, as BUDDY GRIZZARD claims about me, it’s Danny Ferry. After all, he drafted him and said he’ll be on our opening day roster. I haven’t said anything about him or his abilities. All I’ve done is list his name on a few of my roster predictions.

WORDSMITHTOM-These DELUSIONAL HORFORD HATERS are starting to get out of hand with their selfserving BS. They are so devoid of facts, or incapable of manifesting anything close to an informed opinion, that they continuously manufacture these straw arguments(ldistortions, misrepresentations, and outright lies) to further their delusional beliefs.

With Ferry’s committment to retaining and developing MScott at PF, who’s definitely a stretch 4 and strong rebounder, we could be seeing the end of JSmith’s tenure as an Atlanta Hawk if Ferry is successful in bringing in a DEF minded OC. Horford and Scott and would make for a very solid and complimentary PF tandum, and both would definitely be able to stretch the floor.

Ferry isn’t looking to take the Hawks team and franchise through a potentially long and sometimes painfull rebuilding process. He wants to make his transition as quick and painless as possible, which means he’s looking to remodel rather than rebuild.

I wonder how intrigued DHoward or ABynum have been so far by the Hawks’ abundance of high percentage 3pt shooters(Morrow, Jenkins, Morrow, Korver), stretch 4s(Horford, Scott), and quality PGs(Teague, Harris, Williams)? Keep in mind that this is all just speculation on my part, or food for thought.

Scott may very well start the year in the D League. Player development does NOT mean that he will get guaranteed playing time while guys like Josh, Al and Ivan are sitting on the bench.

Boy, talk about a stretch… from late second round pick to the player who makes Josh Smith expendable a year later. Whew.

Buddy or anyone else, has Danny confirmed his camp invites publically?

Teague
Harris
Lou
Korver
Stevenson
Al
Josh
Zaza
Ivan
JJenk
MScott
Petro
Morrow
Anderson
James

That is all I’ve heard and potentially Benson is on the list. You would think there would be 2-3 others.

Kevin, I have not seen anything else. I’m expecting at least 1 PG will be added to the list. But keep in mind, they have 14 guaranteed contracts, with James and Anderson battling for the last roster spot. So they may not invite more than a single player.

I wonder if Ferry has made a first-hand evaluation of Gladyr?

Trade Al Horford now Danny. If you wait any longer his value will decline. Make a move while his valus is still worth a late first round pick!!!

“If you wait any longer his value will decline.”

LOL his value is going to decline when he’s about to play for the first time without ISO? More shots to go around means he will put up career numbers and his value will increase. Keep trying though.

Look at how pathetic Nique’s defense is:

http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nba_tv/2011/08/16/20110701_1988_atl_bos_GM7.nba/index.html

He was completely dominated by Bird any time he had to guard him. Check out the iso at 2:40. This is for you, Nique fans. The Hawks have never been to the ECF because Nique only played on the offensive end.

@Ken
I think we all agree on would depend on the style and scheme I intended to employ. part of your statement. I previously mentioned that Joe was very good in an uptempo system before Woody got to him. I also believe Marvin would have been better in a faster tempo. But these are offensive perspectives. The new guys will be able to score in an uptempo offense (if Drew plays it that way.)

DEFENSIVELY-is where we will sacrifice. A small backcourt is easier to shoot over. With SF TBD, the hope is someone will step up tothe task so Josh doesn’t have to log lots of defensive minutes guarding a player at the 3 pt line instead of near the lane where he is more effective as a help defender. Big on the wings allowed us to cover for smaller frontcourt. This year, small on the wings means more outscoring instead of outdefending.

As for the how good was Lou last year. Offensively, he did well as a 6th man under Doug Collins. Doesn’t automatically translate to playing in the Hawks system. Hopefully there will be some tweaks to take advantage of his scoring, but defense is a concern.

@ Astro Joe,

Yeah I agree with your assessment of Scott. He is a D Leaguer, thats it. Ferry saying he will be on the roster, just means he will most likely be 1 of 15. But with Al, Josh, and Ivan all capable of playing Pf’s, he wont see the floor at all.

I see a 5 guard rotation of Korver, Teague, Harris, Lou, & Stevenson.
That means there won’t be any space for JJenk and Morrow is going to have to fight for 5-10 minutes.

Could Anderson or James get any serious consideration to start at the 3?

That could create a logjam at PF as I suspect Zaza is looking for 25-30mpg.

Josh or Al could be traded before this season ends.

And Jabbar has been working with Noah this summer……very interested to see if it shows.
I would have liked to have him work with our guys exclusively like that.

I’M-A-SOUL-STAR-Suppose a Philly fan decided to checkout our blogs and read the IGNORANT BS our resident HORFORD HATING TROLLS routinely post about Horford. Do you really think they’d come away with an accurate opinion of his abilities and what he does for the team?

I’m certain every team has its share of ignorant, uninformed, and/or stupid fans who either develop feeling of hate, or develop MAN CRUSHES, on certain players. Unfortunately, it just seems that we have more than our share of those types of fans.
***************************************************************************************************

I never said anything about this being an accurate opinion. Just said that this was a common theme from the majority of fans on several Philly blogs. Even stated at the end that “I haven’t watched him play enough to form my own opinion outside of ATL summer league stuff.”

Just sharing pertinent information man,

Although I definitely consider this a different situation for Lou since we will have several shooters/scorers on the floor at all times this season, I’m not such a homer that I would completely dismiss the majority opinion of the fan base of a player’s former team.

@ Just Joe,

Appreciated your ability to bring up Harris’ stats from the Nets and Jazz. Remember with the Jazz, Harris was forced to run an inside-outside offense (to Jefferson/Millsap) which was a sharp contrast from the New Jersey offense. Also, who was Josh Smith’s equal in talent on the Nets? Someone comparable, even.
Harris has been on record speaking on how excited he is to join the Hawks because he will get opportunities to penetrate in the lane offensively; I think his ability to complement the big men’s game (specifically Smith, because Josh will have the option to finish, pass to the wing or go one-on-one) will be the key to the Hawks’ offense. I also think Harris can indirectly raise Teague’s basketball IQ, giving Ferry a chance to assess the two guards and their potential moving forward.
Josh is not trying to win a championship two years from now – he’s wanting to get there as soon as possible. The team acquired a veteran point guard and a bench player who can get his own shot (Lou Williams). Smith doesn’t forget any traditional role so we will keep him for his X-factor traits. Everybody else, including Zaza (continuity, nostalgia) is on the trade block. However, Horford and Zaza can make a bid for staying with the squad depending on how well they complement our new PG. I like Jeff Teague, but he came to us as a raw talent and because Woodson and Drew resisted using him, Teague will leave us as an unfinished product. Jeff Teague, say hello to Golden State- and that won’t be a bad thing since the coach is a former standout.

ASTRO JOE-READING WITH COMPREHENSION IS FUNDAMENTAL. I know you like a good argument, but are you really that desperate? How in the devil did you manage to read the following, “WE COULD BE SEEING THE END OF JOSH SMITH’S TENURE AS AN ATLANTA HAWK, IF FERRY IS SUCCESSFUL IN BRINGING IN A DEF MINDED OC”, and come up with this totally and completely off base comment, “BOY, TALK ABOUT A STRETCH…FROM LATE SECOND ROUND PICK TO PLAYER WHO MAKES JOSH SMITH EXPENDABLE A YR LATER. WHEW.

How did me sayng Ferry getting a DEF minded OC turn into MScott makng JSmith expendable?

First off Let me say that any body who is dissatisfied will Al Horford’s lack of performance, as many of you are, will be classified by me as either a hater or a troll, well in some cases both.

Why?

The logic escapes me now but, Go hawks.

Now back to you haters and trolls. I cant fully understand why you arent excited about a center who can play power forward having career numbers of 12 pt 9 rebounds. That excites the hell out of me.

You need to Join our cult and worship Al like Sautee, Ashole Joe.and myself. While its true we are a minority cult we will grow if you join us. All we ask is that you call all the bloggers on this site who are calling for Al to be traded, “haters” and anyone who is critical of Al’s weak game a “troll” then you can be one of us.

According to the GRAND POOTBUTT Sautee. Our continuing 2012 strategy of defending the many many criticisms of Al’s disgusting performances is to Attack Josh. And while its true that Josh had nothing to do with Al’s poor performance its important for us to attack Josh to help Al.

Why?

The logic escapes me now but lets move on.

Now, A lot of you have been comparing Jon Koncak with Al Horford. That may be a good comparison Although the defensive number favor Koncak and the offensive numbers Jon however they are both over paid.

Now, I know that the majority of the bloggers want to get Al traded. And that my happen, but in the mean while I need All of my cult brother to ATTACK JOSH!!!!! ATTACH FCKING JOSH, ATTACK ATTACK YOU MUTHER F CKERS ATTACK !!

YOU ANAL MINDED MORONS AS S HOLES … AND PLAY TEAGUE.

Trading Al now while there is still some value to his name would be the wisest move the hawks can make. It makes since to trade Al now. Zaza and Ivan proved we havent missed Al one bit… And he could have kept that playoff fart. I think we would have done better if Al had just stayed home. He messed it up for the rest of the guys. I thought Al was going to be traded with Marvin Williams.

Yea, Al has been a disappointment. Theres just not enough to his game and he doesnt like defense. He should have hired Hakeem the dream or or somebody to train him.

Why does every one want to trade Al? He would make a nice bench player as a back up to Al Jefferson or Josh Smith.

Can you imagine. Josh Smith. Devin Harris and Al Jefferson…. Wow. That would be nice. Just add the trimmings.

I still think the best way to defend Al is to attack Josh. I’m like Ken on this one, there is no way I can answer for Al’s play so I think we should continue to attack josh.
