7:34 pm September 17, 2012, by Chris Vivlamore
Vivlamore reporting.
The Hawks requested waivers on Jordan Williams Monday.
Williams, a 6-foot-10 forward, was obtained from Brooklyn as part of the July 11th trade for Joe Johnson. Last season with the Nets he averaged 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 14.8 minutes in 43 games. The Nets selected Williams in the second round of the 2011 draft out of Maryland.
There was a buyout component to the roster move. The Hawks now have 13 guaranteed contracts, including Ivan Johnson and Mike Scott. The Hawks are allowed 15 guaranteed contracts so there remains some roster flexibility. They could use the flexibility to add a player now or wait should a need or a trade arise during the season.

A 2 for 1, or 3 for 1, trade coming? Another free agent signing? The timing suggests a corresponding move about to be made.

I linked this yesterday:
http://www.rantsports.com/nba/2012/09/13/atlanta-hawks-2012-13-player-profile-fc-jordan-williams/
Williams showed up to camp last year with the Nets out of shape and overweight. I doubt Ferry would be cutting him if the coaching staff hadn’t had a chance to get a look at him and see if the same applied this year. I just don’t see them cutting loose an asset. Then again, maybe Williams is fine but more roster moves are coming and the Hawks needed the roster spot. If Williams’ salary was not fully guaranteed and they can cut him and only pay part of it, maybe that’s the reasoning.

Then again maybe this is just to create some court time for Mike Scott, whom the organization loves for some unfathomable reason.

He’s not going to be missed. I rather have the roster flexibility than have dead weight on the end of the bench. Hopefully, gone are the days using a roster sport for unproductive vets like Ethan Thomas, Joe Smith, Erik Dampier and Collins

I think this is a great!!!!
GRRREEATT move Danny!
This guy can play. Hes pretty much a rookie who only had a couple years at Maryland. He is truely 6′10″ plays both power forward and Center, (like Al ) but if you asked him he’d say he wouldn’t mind playing center at All. Hes big and strong at a solid 260 lbs. He is very physical and not only loves to block shots but he has broken a glass backboard during a game Ala Chocolate Thunder.
His offense is not bad, pretty much the same as you get with Al. I think their college averages were about 1 pt difference..or so.This guy has more low post moves than Al.
Hes young and will only get better. Think Al horford but more of a beast, bigger and stronger.
I think this guy has a good future ahead of him. In 2 or 3 years he will be better than Al for sure. So this to me is a step in the right direction. He makes Al more expendable during trade season.
Do, I think this guy will be the center we are looking for to win with?
No, not at this time. But he is still a growing puppy and could turn into something good.
All and All I like this move. It certainly gives us more options at the low post, I do want to add that he will need more time to develop.

I really like this guy. when he was drafted he was 6′9″ 247 @ 21 years of age, now at 23 (he will be in October) this guy has added 13lbs and grew an inch. He will fill out more as he gets older and his body matures. He comes from the finesse Maryland Terrapins where he was a force. All this guy needs is a chance to develop. Nice pick up.

I suppose that it confirms he was really never in Ferry’s plan. He was simply a hrow in the Joe trade. Makes you wander if the other players acquired in the Net’s deal. (Morrow and Stevenson) I think they pretty much chose to go the Scott and Ivan route at PF. and no sense keeping an extra stiff. I think this signals that another move might be in the near future (a free agent signing that might be a guaranteed deal, perhaps).

I still think the Hawks should consider resigning Tracy McGrady. Not many players on the team know how to get points outside of the offense and certainly the team will have trouble creating shot opportunities on their own when teams figure out the scheme. McGrady does not have that problem and is skilled enough to help the team run sets that get people open. I think Devin Harris is the most important acquisition of the team after trading Joe Johnson but resigning McGrady would help the team with continuity and let management look fairly at whether Josh Smith can be a primary option or does he need a frontourt player to help him carry the load.

Owed $762k. Negotiated a buyout. Maybe $650k to free up a roster spot??? I’m OK with that. This kid was out of shape going in to Nets camp last year, and he looked as soft & round as a marshmallow in Vegas summer league this year.
Ferry is playing with “house” money at this point after unloading Joe’s & Marvin’s contracts. Buy out Farmar for $2.5M. Buy out Williams for ???. Stevenson & Petro better watch out!!! Morrow may be the last man standing out of the bunch.

Wow, first Jordan Farmar and now Williams. The ASG actually paying guys to walk away. And to think, some of y’all act like ferry will need to “justify” firing LD… the man clearly has far more power and authority than any GM we’ve seen here during the ASG ownership. He won’t need to justify dumping LD when he is ready.
I asked yesterday how the Ivan signing would affect this guy, well, there you have it. There are still rumors that the Hawks are interested in Anthony Tolliver and now there are a few “mystery teams” allegedly showing interest in Pietrus.

Generally speaking, adding players at the end of their NBA career to this year’s roster seems like a waste of a roster spot. The core of this squad isn’t talented enough to be a legit contender, so winning an extra game or 3 in the regular season should be a secondary concern to evaluating young and inexpensive talent that could be brought back for the long term. In Korver’s case, he is far more likely to deliver a 2nd round draft pick in a February trade than TMac. Not to mention that Ferry expliocitly went out and acquired Korver, so there seems to be little chance that he will dump him in favor of a guy he could have had.

Oldman, Oden’s recovery is not coming along smoothly. He has alcohol abuse issues along with having an issue with his legs being different lengths. Not sure he has anything to offer at this time but this is just based on various reports coming out.
He sounds like he wants to give it another go, but he still has a lot to overcome and he is thinking it will be at least a year to get healthy.

You think it’s bad the AJC didn’t tell us about Ivan re-signing. At least
the Hawks have their own reporter. The Atlanta Dream of the WNBA
are going back to the playoffs again and fans are supporting them, yet
we have to read the Associated Press coverage because the AJC doesn’t
bother to cover them at all.
Not everyone loves the WNBA. True. Not everyone loves the Bulldogs either.
Yet, their coverage is if they are everyone’s favorites. Go figure.
