Former Hawks All-Star Dan Roundfield drowned yesterday off the coast of Aruba.
According to reports, Roundfield’s wife became distressed while swimming off of Baby Beach and Roundfield tried to assist her. The Aruba Herald reported that witnesses saw the woman return to shore but that Roundfield was taken out to sea. Authorities found Roundfield’s body under some rocks, the Herald reported.
A police spokesman in Aruba told the Associated Press that Roundfield and his wife went beyond a protected reef area and got caught up in rough waters. The couple were vacationing at the Renaissance Resort.
“It’s a real tragedy,” the spokesman, John Larmonie, told the AP. “He drowned saving his wife.”
Roundfield’s sister-in-law, Julia Roundfield, also confirmed his death to the AP.
“He was a real sweet guy,” Julia Roundfield told the AP. “He really was a sweetheart.”
Roundfield’s survivors include his wife, Bernie, sons Corey and Christopher, and their grandchildren.
Roundfield, 59, played six seasons for the Hawks from 1978-79 to 1983-84. He was named to All-Star teams in 1980, ‘81 and ‘82 and was second-team All-NBA in 1979-80. Roundfield also was voted to the All-Defensive team in five of his 12 NBA seasons.
In a 2006 interview with the Hawks’ Web site, Roundfield said he worked in marketing for an environmental engineering company. He said his favorite NBA memories included making the playoffs in his first season with the Hawks and playing alongside Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins.
The 1978-79 Hawks, coached by Hubie Brown, earned the franchise’s first playoff series victory since 1969-70 by defeating Houston. The Hawks lost a seven-game series to the Washington Bullets in the conference semifinals; Roundfield, in the Website interview, said the Hawks “probably should have beat” the Bullets.
“Danny was the most honest and upfront person I knew, and I’m very stunned at hearing the news of his death,” Wilkins, now a Hawks vice president, said in a statement released by the team. “Danny’s one of my closest friends and he was a tremendous influence on my NBA career, on and off the court. He taught me how to be a professional and took me under his wing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, I will truly miss him.”
Danny Solomon, a Hawks ball boy during Roundfield’s final season with the Hawks, said Roundfield still lived in the Atlanta area. Solomon said Roundfield was “the nicest dude in the world,” a personality that contrasted with his physical playing style.
“Strong as an ox,” Solomon said. “Back then, all the centers were very, very strong. That’s back when it was ‘real’ basketball and if you tried to go to the hole against a guy like Roundfield, you would go straight down to the floor. He was known for being really rough. He was a stud down low.”
The Cavaliers selected Roundfield in the second round of the 1975 draft after the Detroit native starred at Central Michigan University. The Hawks signed Roundfield as a free agent before the 1978-79 season. In the summer of 1984 Atlanta traded Roundfield to the Pistons for Cliff Levingston, Antoine Carr and two draft picks.

How is the wife? Did no one see where he went under? What happened during that hour? Why did it take an hour to find his body?
Lots of unanswered questions come to mind. Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out everything that happened with this story.

Very sad. His name is never mentioned when we talk about great players in this city. A true warrior. One of the greatest bangers of all time. Lunch pail and hard hat guy. RIP Dan Roundfield… that is terrible news.
FTPB:
“Sautee, I think Buddy is trying to find content for his new blog and isn’t going to let logic stop him from his quest.”
That’s funny… I haven’t posted any speculation on my blog about Ferry coaching the Hawks. Guess I need to get to work on that post since I’m trying to “find content.”
“Ferry has ZERO coaching experience.”
Still waiting for you to answer the question Sautee… how much coaching experience did Mark Jackson have? The precedent is there for former NBA players with no coaching experience to get hired as NBA head coaches. The precedent is there (Popovich) for an NBA executive to name himself coach. If Ferry decides to fire Drew mid-season, ASG is not going to want to pay two coaches. Logically, that makes Atkinson and Ferry the most likely candidates as interim coaches. Does Ferry have any desire to coach? I have no idea. I do know that he played for two of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport: Coach K and Pop.

My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Dan and his wife at a coffee house that used to be right next to the Fox Theater (not sure if it is still there). He and his wife were sitting at the table right next to us….after watching a play at the Fox. He initiated a conversation with us and his wife was exceptionally nice. We did not know who he was at first….but I was thinking that he was very tall. He was a very down to earth person, and very intelligent. So was his wife. This is very sad news to read.

Buddy, I assumed it was a rhetorical question, since most of the sporting world is aware of Jackson’s lack of bench time. But what of it? Jackson clearly let it be known that he coveted a coaching job. Ferry has never, to my knowledge, had any interest in coaching.

Ra’mon, that is a good and tough question. I’d probably go with Blair and Ivan. Blair because of his proven rebounding skills and because he could play a little center with his bulk. Plus, he only has a year left on his contract so there is very little risk in terms of his chronic knee issues. I’d keep Ivan because of his toughness and ability to defend multiple positions. And I think they could play next to each other as Ivan has a better face-up game and Blair’s limited offense seems to come from the low-block. A little high-low set could be used with those two. The Hawks would actually have a good chance of running with their 37 guards if they had several above average rebounders available to play during all 48 minutes of the game.

Dan Roundfield’s NBA career average(s): 15.2ppg and 9.7rpg
Very respectable stats…averaged a double-double [in points and rebounds] for six consecutive years ['77-'83] and, in the next [or seventh] year ['83-84], Roundfield averaged 18.9ppg and 9.9rpg…Hawks’ fans should hope that Al Horford and Josh Smith can meet or exceed those above NBA career averages.
I didn’t realize Roundfield was an extremely good defensive player. I was a young boy back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

To answer some of the questions. The Roundfield’s were vacationing in Aruba with their 2 grandsons and Dan’s sister. His wife was on a raft that was floating a little to far out, she cannot swim so Dan went to pull her back. Dan and his two grandsons, 7 and 5, were playing on the reef when he noticed his wife and went to the edge of the reef, when he arrived the rip tied pulled him under and he hit his head on the reef and was kept under, he somehow got stuck between rocks and seaweed, that is why it took longer to find him. No one else was hurt and all managed to return to shore safely. He is survived by his wife, two grown sons, and two grandsons. He will truly be missed.

She remembers him to be an excellent rebounder and hard working defensive specialist. After reading up a little about him, he sure did sound like a pretty great guy on and off the court. I pray that the Heavenly Father saw fit for him to live in eternity ..RIP Mr. Roundfield!!

A sad loss for longtime Hawks fans. I met him once and invited him over to our table, and he stayed for at least a half hour. A very nice man.
Many here may not know that he was an awesome basketball player. His nickname during his playing days should have been “Money”, because when he had the ball in the paint, you could count on it going in.

Dan was an awesome person in and out. Went to school with his son Chris and had the pleasure of working with him everyday. We all heard in college that Chris’ Dad was a basketball player and none of us believed him We swore he was lying. We were all too young to really know who Dan Roundfield was as a player. But he was clearly an awesome father and grandfather. Loved his grandkids more than anything. He was always willing to help you out and was the ultimate gentlemen. He loved his wife and his family. He wasn’t pretentious and enjoyed telling stories of his days on the court but he never bragged. He just loved the game. What a great guy. He will be missed. RIP Dan.

I used to sit a few rows off the court behind the one of the baskets when Dan Roundfield played for the Hawks. I vividly remember the sensation of seeming to feel the force when the Pistons came to town and the banging that was going on down low. Dan Roundfield is part of those memories which are burned into my brain for as long as I’ll live. I’ve moved away from ATL a few years ago but, I remain a Hawks fan forever. I had heard Dan Roundfield was a class act off the court. I’m glad to hear it was apparently true. R.I.P. Roundfield has spent the past few years in the engineering business here in Atlanta. I had the honor of teaming with him and his company on several projects. Talked to him on the phone before meeting him and wondered is this “the Dan Roundfield?”. Soft spoken and a true gentleman. Finally met him and it was obvious he was “the Dan Roundfield”. What a class act. Humble but confident; first class in everything he did. A sad, sad day.

Hi-Side took the words off of my keyboard. A Hawks fan should hope, wish, dream, and pray that Smith and Horford produce and show the heart, effort, and toughness in the same manner that Roundfield did. Anyway, my condolences to the family. RIP, Rounds….

Thanks. I remember Mokeski as being a statue (Jason Collins-like), even the offensive minded Nellie would not have asked Mokeski to defend Roundfield in space.
Buddy, yeah, once a team crosses the salary cap and uses their MLE, there isn’t much flexibility (if they don’t own a player’s Bird rights). But they have the trade exemption from the Willie Green trade to use if they want to acquire more talent (and stay under the luxury line). Dajuan Blair’s contract (as an example) is for a little over $1M. And Devin Ebanks was scheduled to make about $1M if he signed his QO. So the Hawks can easily acquire either of those players (Ebanks would require a S&T) using the Willie Green chip.

I have been to Baby Beach several times:
It a very calm beautiful enclave that’s protected from the crashing waves by a barrier rocky reef! You are warned never to venture out beyond the reef or all bets are off! Just vicious pounding waves and under tows that never let up day and night due to the constant 15 knot trade winds blowing across the island! You are nothing more than a rag doll if you get caught up in the under tow and getting hammered by those crushing waves..Death is only a few seconds away..So Sad! RIP Dan!
What a hero to save the love of his life and give up his own!

“To answer some of the questions. He will truly be missed.”

The Hawks tried to acquire Howard last offseason, offering several different packages to the Magic. However, Orlando wasn’t ready to part ways with Howard and the talks didn’t go anywhere. HoopsWorld
The Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks have been mentioned as potential suitors for Dwight Howard in recent months, but there’s a dark horse to keep an eye on as this saga continues. If Howard becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason, the Atlanta Hawks will aggressively pursue the six-time All-Star and try to lure the superstar center back to his hometown. HoopsWorld
On a sidenote I think it’s a real scumbag move for Dwight to duck out of his youth camp like he is doing. Is it really so hard to go and make some kids who really want to see you happy?

Hell of a shame…Rounds was a great one. He was always under-rated a bit, because he was quiet…didn’t force his shots (which was a good thing, since we had John Drew on the team)…but could score from anywhere. Great leaper, tough defender and the best rebounding forward in the league. (Although Truck Robinson was every bit as good…you could flip a coin between the two.)
He was also a good representative for the team in the community…always willing to go and talk to kids or visit hospitals. I’m sure sorry to hear this sad news.

Very sad. The man died a true hero risking his life to save his wife. How tragic. But, the measure of a man is always what he does for others and Danny Rounds did his all for his wife. I fondly remember watching the Hawks teams from this era and they played an excellent brand of basketball and the added value of Skip Caray as the play-by-play man was superb. Back in the days when WTBS gave sports fans a true smorghisborg of sports. At one point, you could watch the Hawks, Braves, and Flames play. It was heaven!
Never knew the man personally, but it is so nice to hear so many who did all say he was a kind-hearted person. He will be missed in many ways!

I wish today’s players could see how bad they are compared to players like Roundfield. I never missed a Hawks game on T.V. when these guy’s played because they played defense first and Roundfield was right up there with the very best. Nobody could reject a shot like he could. I never watch pro basketball now because it’s become a game of only offense which is just half a game which is the way coaching is from park and rec. through college. Today’s players are not as good as they think they are be cause they play only park and rec. ball and are paid big money and the fans pay big money to watch it.

This is very sad. I was at Baby Beach when this happened. I actually saved the two grandchildren who were stranded on the rocks but I did not know what else was going on. An hour later the helicopter started the search. Not a quick response at all. Very sad to see the family during this awful time.

Man, this is a shoot in the guts!
“Rounds” literally saved this franchise when Truck Robinson left the Hawks in his one and done season. When Drew, Eddie Johnson, and backup Terry Furlow were literally subsidizing small drug cartels; Roundfield and Armond Hill were holding a very fragile locker room together…
From one Huron to one Chippewa, may you find eternal rest! A model for what exemplifies a man to your very last human effort! Thank you!!!

Bring Dwight home…
“Not only do the Hawks have the cap space and hometown ties to recruit Howard, they also have two of his closest friends on their roster. Josh Smith and Anthony Morrow have known Howard for years and they could help the Hawks lure the big man next summer.”
“Last summer, Howard was asked to name five players who he would like to have on his team. Howard named Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Stephen Jackson, Monta Ellis and Morrow, showing just how close he is with the shooting guard and how much he respects his game. Morrow believes the Hawks have a chance to land Howard, but says he doesn’t have any inside knowledge.”
““With me and Josh having a relationship with Dwight, it’s a possibility,” Morrow said. “It’s always a possibility, but that’s something that they’ll have to take care of upstairs. Mr. Ferry is doing a great job so far. Anything is possible, you never know. It’d be great with the relationship that us three have, and (fellow Atlanta native) Lou Williams too, especially from a chemistry standpoint. That’s a good core group of guys right there to build a team around. It’d be great, but there’s no telling what will happen.””

Sam, you need to turn off the TV and stop trying to think of conspiracies. How long do YOU think it should take to find a drowning victim?…is 1 hour too long in your mind? What happened in that hour — well, maybe the emergency rescue people had to get to their boat, get their gear on, boat to the site of the drowning, and start searching THE OCEAN for the location of a body that may be on the surface or on the ocean floor – or in this case, under some rocks.
You should try looking for bodies some time. Its gruesome, not enjoyable, and not like in the TV shows.

Those who saw Danny play know he gave the Hawks a respectability after a very trying time of whiffing on David Thompson, Webster – getting Givens and Al Wood in the draft – and basically being a pariah after Maravich, Lou Hudson, and Walt Bellamy, for a few years.
Danny was a class act. Solid. No complaining – just lunch pail, hustle, and a very good BB player.
Haven’t checked his stats – but he was going to give you somewhere around 20 and 9 a nite. And never complain.

These blogs show a grand legacy for Dan. I have incredibly fond memories of this gentle giant. Here are some to share. Walking down hallways, people would frequently look up and ask if he was a basketball player and he was humble by replying he did a while ago without going into details about how great he once was. He laughed when people would mistaken him for Tree Rollins. He had a deep booming voice that seemed tailor made for radio but he claimed that he had stuttered when he was younger and it would not work on the radio. He had a geat knowledge of NBA history that he and I would often debate about. He even found an error on an ESPN article years ago that they had to write a retraction about. Rounds told me that he would ask his coaches to defend the superstars of his era. This included a time when he chose to defend a white hot Larry Bird and told me that it was easy to guard him because he knew his moves but Larry still got his share of points. Dan claimed he was a far better baseball player in high school than basketball and that he thought he would make it further in baseball if not for his height. He was so dedicated to his wife, Bernie, who was so frequently at his side and often seemed to quietly admire her husband when adorIng fans would monopolize his time right in front of her. He was involved with charity work in the metro Atlanta area and thank him for exposing my nephew to one of his Tourets Syndrome basketball charities from his side on the bench. He was recently given a long deserved place in a Hall of Fame (Michigan Sports Hall of Fame) with the induction next week he deserves the same in Georgia and with the Hawks for his overall contributions I knew him well and my heart goes out to Bernie, Cory and Chris. Rounds has an immortal legacy that his family can always remember.

I can’t think of any Hawk I loved more than Dan. One of “Hubie’s Hustlers.” How exciting it was when the Hawks took the Bullets to the brink in ‘79 in the Capital Centre against Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Bobby Dandridge. I think President Carter was at the game 7. Cover of Sports Illustrated back when that was a huge deal. How very sad how his life ended, but he went out with a bang — trying to save someone’s life. Rest in peace, Dan, and God bless the surviving family and friends.

I just found out I lost a cousin to an auto accident today so I share some pain with the Roundfield family. (FYI: My cousin’s name was Nic, a rising senior at Armstrong State university). I want to extend my condolences to the Roundfields and let them know that Dan was among my first Georgia sports heroes. I moved to Georgia in 78 for half a year and became a Hawks fan by watching Tree, Roundfield, Steve Hawes and Charlie Criss take on stars like the “Big E” Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld. I’m thankful Roundfield showed me what good basketball and sportsmanship are about.

I remember Roundfield even though I live in another state but due to I would watch him and those Hawks teams on TBS in the early 80’s. Looking back at that era, the late 70’s early 80’s were very physical and tough teams during that area. Thing with Roundfield is that he had very good timing in blocking shots and gave it his all when he played. That Bullet series was even though I was young was a very entertaining series. I will say those 70’s Bullet teams were very good
Unfortunately Roundfield doesnt get his just due because outside of the year they went 7 games with the Bullets in 78-79 and 79-80, the Hawks teams were not very good. There really isnt any player that is playing in the NBA today that he reminds me of and he could not probably play in todays NBA since it is very soft. It is like comparing sugar as far as NBA in the past to artificial sweetner to the NBA today. It doesnt compare.
RIP and God Bless to you and your family Mr Roundfield.

After reading all the comments on how much of a loving husband Dan was to give his life to save his wife, I can see such a hero. I can only hope that Corey and Chris have learned from their father to love, cherish and protect their wives. Dan and Bernie seemed to be each other’s best friends from all the comments posted. Alot of men by today’s standards do not seem to see their wives as an extension of themselves, therfore they do not take care of them in that manner. The bible states that when you get married then “two become one.” Dan’s legacy certain proved that he and Bernie became one during their marriage. I pray that Dan’s grandsons will remember the heroic, selfless act that took him away when they are adults.

Danny and I knew each other in college, mostly because my best friend, Len Drake, played with him at Central Michigan, and I managed a disco called the Alibi East in Mt. Pleasant. I used to see him at Hawks games, but figured an NBA All-Star would never remember a bar manager he hadn’t seen in over 30 years. When Len died suddenly of a heart attack a couple of years ago I emailed my contact at the Hawks (my company has season tickets) and asked him if he could find a way to forward my contact information to Danny. Shortly after that my phone rang and it was Danny, calling to tell me that he and another former Chippewa were going to drive all night to attend Len’s funeral the next day. After that we emailed back and forth occasionally and saw each other a couple of times at games, but hadn’t talked in a while. Just the other day I was cleaning out some photo files and came across a picture he had sent me of him standing on the court at a Hawks game with Dr. J and ‘Nique, and thought I should email him and see how he was doing, but didn’t. Never hesitate when you have those “moments” because you might never have another chance.

I remember meeting him about 5 years ago at one of our pump stations when he worked for Earthtech. He was a tall figure getting out of his older Benz. Recognized him right away. Shook his giant hand with him acting so humble. He never once mentioned who he was just concentrating on the work at hand. I finally confronted the gentle giant about who he was and he acted like it wasn’t a big deal. He talked to me in a real one on one conversation and never mentioned himself. He acted almost embarrassed that I made a big deal about it. A real true down to earth person that was a tough player for the Hawks. RIP Dan!! Kind of cool to see all of the wonderful remarks. We’ve become a very cynical (and sometimes disrespectful) society but obviously the vast majority of people respected and/or loved Roundfield.
Again, high-tube socks, dude wore like 8 wristbands on each arm… I always remember he wore those bulky knee pads… he was all legs, arms and elbows and he looked like he was walking onto a football field and not a basketball court. He had a great “game-time look” about him that is etched in my memory bank. And he and Truck Robinson, Antoine Carr and Kevin Willis are why my favorite position on the basketball court is PF. That has historically been where the tough guys play who are willing to do whatever it takes to help their team win. Dude was a PF until the very end, doing whatever it took to help his team (i.e., his family and specifically his bride).

I played softball with him while he was playing for the Hawks. He should NOT have been playing for us but we were VERY glad he did. He always said he was a better softball player than a basketball player and he COULD do anything he wanted to on the field. Since he could hit the ball (way way) out whenever he wanted he took great delight in beating the ball down the third base line and striding across first long before the throw. I once saw him jump WAY over the third baseman who was waiting with the ball, but of course he also jumped over the bag and stood grinning while the guy came over to tag him out. Incredibly, he was a far better PERSON than athlete and always had time to talk to anyone who had time for him. Ive been around many successful people in and out of athletics but he was, hands down, the most humble likable person one might encounter. His family was always with him if at all possible and it’s fitting that he died trying to save his wife – his love for family was obvious to all of us. So many memories of a Sweet Gentle Man and an AMAZING Competitor. RIP, Rounds.

Roundfield proved that you can be classy AND excel at your profession. I’m not sure that Triche was able to check both boxes. It was a rare treat to hear a member of the Hawks conduct a local media interview during this 4-5 year playoff run. That always frustrated me, how no one held the players accountable to sell the product. I don’t know if that has anything to do with him being let go, but I’d surely welcome hearing more than just the TV & radio play-by-play guys talking about this team in the future.

Wild story about Dan Roundfield from when I was a kid……..after a Hawks game, we waited outside the locker room and Rounds came out and threw a big paper bag of his stuff to some of us kids waiting there and me and another kid tore the bag, and I ended up with 1 left shoe (white Converse leather shoe with “Rounds” on the side)……so he lived in my neighborhood in Roswell (Martin’s Landing) and I went to his house and knocked on the door to see if I could get a right shoe to complete the pair…….what a great guy, he invites me and my friend into his house, his kids playing Centipede on a real arcade machine, wife cooking dinner, and not only gives me a brand new pair of his Converse, but autographs them as well…….still have them to this day……..RIP Rounds!!!!!

So saddened by the news. Dan Roundfield was one of my favorite players of all time. Rebounder, shot blocker, scorer, defender. Whatever needed to be done he could do it. He was a dynamic player and dominated the paint. I always remember those classic matchups vs. the Bullets as he battled a pair of Hall of Famers, Unseld and Hayes. I remember getting to go to the Hawks 1978 draft day through a friend. In walked Dan Roundfield holding his son as the Hawks announced they had signed him as free agent. Didn’t know much about his game but he had put up good numbers in Indiana his previous season. Little did I know he would become one of the greatest Hawks ever. RIP Dan.
