I joined Matt Moore of CBSSports.com for a podcast reviewing the Hawks’ offseason so far. My segment begins at about 18:30 but, by all means, also check out the opening with Jason Walker of Peachtree Hoops.

The Truth, folk who are convinced the Hawks will be entertaining must think that watching their team lose 111-107 is more exciting than watching a 94-90 victory – AJ
Now that’s “The Truth”

Grandad – Not all steals come from gambling. Besides mistakes, many come from smarts and quickness.
Ra’mon – See above about Iverson – but he probably did gamble more than most.
But Teague, if you watch the games, rarely gambles and gets caught out of position. Oh, it happens sometimes – but his steals come primarily from a good case of the quicks, and getting in a passing lane.
The guys a good overall defender, and his D, like Conley and most of the other PG’s of that caliber, should improve this year over last year.
Year older, year smarter. Year more starting experience in Teague’s case.

The Truth, I think almost any of us Hawks fan would prefer the Hawks to end up with a lottery pick compared to making the playoffs as a 7th seed. The problem is, I don’t think that there are enough good teams in the East who will finish with a better record than the Hawks, even without Joe. The Hawks are one defensive minded SF away from being a top 6 seed in the east. Josh and Al can’t lead a championship caliber team. But Josh and Al can lead this team to the playoffs. If Josh, Al, Teague, nor Zaza misses significant time with injury, than they will be a hard team to beat.

Buddy, I think Vaughn was an assistant coach, which is a step above a player development coach (which is what Atkinson was and NVE is now). For example, Kenny Gattison is an assistant coach, while NVE is the player development coach.

I don’t want Blatche over Ivan – too much risk – even though Ivan got’s some risk also.
If we start ZaZa – I want Blatche as his backup – and maybe to eventually replace him as a starter if he proves himself with attitude and things.
But Blatche can play, no doubt about that.
Rod – Yeh, these great organizations like the Spurs would never take a gamble on a malcontent gunner like Stephen Jackson.
And no way Jackson then shoots 63% from 3 point land during the playoffs.
No way (snicker, snicker).

Steve, I agree. I think Teague is the best defensive PG since Mookie in Atlanta.

My biggest concern about Teague is not his D, I think he’ll get that down.
It’s his contract.
How did George Hill get a 5 year 40 million dollar deal? 8 mill per season, for the solid, but unspectacular George Hill?
Teague is better than George Hill. And if Hill got 8 million per.
And Lin coming off knee surgery got 8-10 mill per (don’t know how his final contract ended up)
And if Landry Fields got 6+ mill per season.
No telling what Teague’s going to get this off season. 10 mIll per? I hope not.

I don’t understand this talk about the HAWKS being exciting, like that means anything! They can’t stop anybody and at best will be a 6-8 seed, if they make the playoffs at all! I’m certain Ferry is looking to trade several players to get a SF, once he can legally start moving Petro, Morrow, Harris, Williams and Stevenson. So, I will pass judgement on this team’s roster until sometime during training camp. As for the players they got in the JJ trade, Morrow is the only keeper to me.

ZaZa’s going to get rich this off season also. Ok, richer.
I just hope a team like Miami doesn’t convince ZaZa to take the mini mid level – Because they’ll be more unbeatable than they already are with ZaZa.

Melvin, my concern about Blatche is that Drew’s staff has been sub-standard in the area of developing players who did not have commitment issues. Drew’s staff certainly hasn’t proven capable of executing any reclamation projects, unless you consider Ivan one. This Atkinson hire could address a real shortcoming in player development that predates the Woody era. A move like that would make me much more confident that the Hawks coaching staff is equipped to give Blatche the guidance he obviously needs.

Grandad,
In your observation about high steals = high risk, were you speaking generally as a coach or were you speaking specifically regarding Teague?

SteveW, I think the Hawks wouldn’t mind Teague leaving in a sign and trade deal next off season. And offensively, I’m not totally sure Teague is better than Hill. Hill had some big time games while in SAS. I see Teague signing for a Conley type of a deal.

“No telling what Teague’s going to get this off season.”
Which is probably why Ferry wants to start and showcase Teague to build trade value. Why pay Teague $10 million when you have a better point guard under contract for less than half that? Teague is trade bait.

KWood – I’ve been a Hawks fan for so long, since I see no chance of a championship this season, may as well at least be exciting and above average. Ha! Not my best case scenario, but I was born and raised in the ATL, and it’s my team, good, bad, and mostly ugly.
I don’t even think Grandad could coach this team to a Championship
