Hawks GM Danny Ferry gained some more of the financial flexibility he covets by sending Willie Green to the Clippers in a sign-and-trade for the rights to Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis.
Schortsanitis signed a three-year contract with Athens club Panathinaikos earlier this month so chances are he won’t be joining Atlanta’s roster. The value for the Hawks in the deal is gaining a trade exception in the amount of Green’s first-year salary with the Clippers, which wasn’t immediately known.
Update: According to ESPN.com’s John Hollinger, the exception is worth between $1.65 million and $2.75 million.
A trade exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirements. The credit expires one year from the date of the trade.
The Clippers selected Schortsanitis in the second round of the 2003 draft. He was listed at 6-9 and 345 pounds while playing for the Clippers’ summer league entry in 2010. Schortsanitis played for Olympiacos and Maccabi before joining Panathinaikos.
Green signed with the Hawks before last season and went on to post a career-best year in scoring efficiency. His 1.04 points scored per possession (on 395 possessions used) ranked 24th in the league, according to Synergy Sports Technology.
Like pretty much every key Hawks reserve, Green struggled to score in the playoffs against the Celtics. In addition, Green’s defensive weaknesses–too slow to handle quicker opponents, too small to check bigger foes–were magnified during that series.

With all the moves Danny Ferry is making, most intelligent individual should be able to see that he does have a long term plan in place. However, with that said, the plan HAS to include 2 superstars, if not 3, in order to make this Hawks team an annual championship contender. The NBA has turned into a Elite 8 league and if you dont have 2 or more 20+ppg players on your team, you have NO CHANCE at winning a title. Being a life-long Hawks fan, I dont want an ownership group, or GM who is okay with making the playoffs. I want a team, a GM, and an ownership group who feels like its either championship or bust like the Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls teams of old. I love Josh’s will to win, love Al’s heart, but if we are ever going to compete for a title, we need to decide which one to keep, and move forward.
I can’t overstate how huge it would be for the Hawks to get a Dwight Howard, or a CP3, or an Andrew Bynum, when we have foundered with poor attendance and embarrassing TV ratings; symbolized by Ryan Cameron, and everybody else in the gym, begging somebody, anybody, to cheer during regular season games when you can count more of the other team’s jerseys in attendance than Hawks jerseys… or, for that matter, playoff games. This would finally, after 40 years of being an afterthought in this sports market — four decades in which we have yet to make an Eastern Conference finals — establish this city as a place that matters, a Hawks game as a worthwhile endeavor and, perhaps, this franchise as something more than an occasional diversion from college football. We can be Atlanta’s Air Force all over again, but its up to ASG and Danny Ferry to bring this plan into fruition. GO HAWKS!

Things have gone quiet again at the old ASG! Hope it’s not business as usual, you know save cash in house and put it in the piggy bank. They are still banking cash and not bringing in what we need SF & C.
Meanwhile, back at the old NBA Free Agent Ranch, we have not gone after any free agent worth anything other than Lou, but we are stock piling guards. Josh & Horford still need help inside.
Hope Korver is not the bargain basement answer for SF or a D Leaguer. Danny has secured his job by dumping & stashing the JJ & Marvin salaries…now Green, plus the trade exemption from last year, the 3 mil we got when we sold a draft pick, and the dumping of our last two years of number 1 draft picks…Crawford & Benson…
What substantial additions have we made recently…Jamal Crawford and Lou William…via the 6th man program…when will the Hawks, Danny address SF & C….the Free Agent pool is bone dry now??????

Ferry is making magic out of nothing. In a deal where he would lose Green anyway because he has no desire to sign him. He ends up getting a trade exception for him, while putting Green in a good situation, which player’s agents remember when dealing with their other clients (players). I’m convinced Ferry has talked to more GMs in this off season than Sund talked to GMs in his entire tenure here.

Ferry is just trying to build a competitive team this year while trying to stockpile assets and cap space to build a title contender in the future. You don’t remake your team into a title contender overnight unless you have Kevin McHale gift you Kevin Garnett or can convince a guy who definitely could get a max contract and a guy who might’ve gotten a max contract to take less money to try to build a championship team, and there weren’t even those kind of guys on the market this year.

idk why but i think danny ferrys goal was to get dwight here all along. he knew asg and sund were not gona attract any major free agents and he had to show jsmooth he was serious about turning the hawks around and to the rest of the league that he can make a semi good franchise into something great.
i think he knows in Cleveland he fudged up bringing in mediocre guys to complement Lebron, like antwaan jamison and mo williams and he should of been more proactive and made the big deal to get LBJ another star to help his burden. well danny ferry has come into ATL and made the hawks one of the top 5 most talked about NBA teams this summer with all these moves.
im so glad we got a GM that has something to prove and has had a few years to sulk and gain new ideas and see how a model professional franchise evaluates and runs a true operation(SA Spurs). ASG made a great move and they deserve credit as well for bringing in GM DF.

I’d be surprised if Ferry offers a 2 year guaranteed contract to any SF at this point. It seems the master plan is to have cap space next summer to do some serious shopping in the most exclusive neighborhoods… signing any SF still on the market after 7 weeks of free agency to a multi-year guaranteed contract would seem like over-paying. A single year contract to someone like Pietrus, Josh Howard or Delfino seems far more likely (to me).

Danny has a tough decision to make in regards to Al Horford. He would have been better served to move Horford and have a shooter at the “4″ like Ryan Anderson. Too late for Anderson, however, a stretch “4″ would be interesting.

So, I’ve decided that Danny Ferry either 1) has very compromising pictures from last year’s GMs meetings or 2) is a Jedi Master using the Jedi Mind Trick to get all of these trades completed.
Seriously though, when are we all gonna wake up from this dream. We actually have a GM that knows what he is doing and is being allowed to do it.
I still hate the ASG for shipping my icebirds north, but if they actually will build a real championship contender out of the Hawks, then I’ll quit calling for them to be kicked out of the country.

AJ – The Bi-Annual exception – 2 years at 1.9 mill per annum wouldn’t kill us on cap space for next season. May even help us if we get a guy we think can help next season.
The Hawks may not have a #1 offensive option this season – I think it will be an inside – out game, with Josh and Al down low, Lou and Teague outside, and a guy like Morrow floating on the wing.
I’m still not sure if I like us starting ZaZa (Big) or Morrow (Small). Maybe switch out on a nightly basis likely LD is prone to do.
But I am in favor of us starting Lou at the 2 Guard, unless we play Big. Maybe even if we play Big.
Alot depends on:
1) How good of shape Morrow comes in at. If he’s declining, bad for the Hawks. If he’s got a Championship mentality of hard work, like JJ and Josh, good for the Hawks.
2) And how does Jordan Jenkins do against “real” competition.
I hope ZaZa and Al are fully recovered from their injuries.
A 2nd unit of Harris, Lou, and Korver would be formidable – and Ivan up front is good – but it seems a little weak with Petro at the C.
That’s why I think Coached and executed properly, the small lineup of:
Al
Josh
Morrow
Lou
Teague
Would be very difficult to defend against. But of course there would be major defensive liabilites as well.
MC – 14 spots already?
Josh, Al, Lou, Harris, Teague, ZaZa, Ivan, Morrow, Korver, Jenkins, Stevenson, Petro, Williams, Scott? Sy? Who is that 14th guy?
And can we ditch Jordan Williams?
SteveW

Something tells me that Josh and Al may be licking their collective chops at the opportunity to play the SF, PF positions. Maybe I’m wrong, but Josh did lose an awful lot of weight before last season, like he was preparing for some more time at the 3.
And LD hasn’t had the best relationship with ZaZa and Teague over his 1st year especially. I wonder if he would start both of them if he could get around it? He did last season (started them both).
I’m excited for this season. Can’t wait to see which way we go. Or does Danny have another trick up his sleeve?
And on ESPN, it is listing Korver as a SF – but man I hope he doesn’t start. I’m just not a big Kyle Korver fan. But of course I hope he does well with the Hawks.

Steven Smith – I’m with you on Pietrus. There’s a few SF’s left that are pretty decent. Pietrus can play the 2 or 3 well. A 2nd unit of:

Would be very well balanced both offensively and defensively. Solid 2nd unit. Very solid.

I look for Josh and Al to have career years if healthy, and at least Josh to make the All Star team. Maybe Al also.
Lou and Teague probably have stellar years also.
And I’m glad Teague gets to learn from Harris. So many folks compare Teague’s game to his. Harris made an All Star team, and averaged 21+ ppg one season.
Teague has had the opportunity to learn from Bibby, Jamal, JJ, and maybe now Harris (depending on whether he’s traded or not before the season). It can only help him. And Van Exel in practice. Gotta be good.

Josh is a budding Super Star, Look for Josh to have another great year. He carried us last year, while Al Laid out. I dont expect much from Al, but the usual college try. He will bring 12 pts and 8rbs to the game. I think he may get more of a bench role. We have to up grade the center position.
But Yeah, Slimjr. Josh is expected to have another stellar year. Most people dont realize that Josh’s worst season is better than Al best season, (he’s only had 1 decent season).
So we are going to move Al and Let him come off the bench, Kind of like a low post 6th man. Hes been punked too many times. No one respects us at the rim and dunk on us at will. Look for Al to have a smaller role. In fact if he wants he can lay out for the whole year like he did last year. We wont miss him at all. We sure didnt last year.

I remember during the 2010-2011 season on one round-table on NBA TV, C-Webb, and others (maybe Kenny Smith and Barkley?) were talking about the Hawks and why no one wanted to come to ATL.
Does the fact that D. Ferry is now our GM (with his track record) and/or the moves he has made (shocking to those inside and outside ATL) create a better perspective for potential FAs to come to the Hawks?
Is our sell job on the next years FA players based on current Hawks personnel that we keep or the change in management (or combination thereof)?

ESPN insider: The Golden State Warriors will have 15 players under contract within the next few days which means Dominic McGuire may have to sign with another team.
McGuire was the Warriors best defender last season and Marcus Thompson II of The Oakland Tribune suggests a couple scenarios which could keep him with the team. They include waiving Kent Bazemore, who has a non-guaranteed contract, and trading Jeremy Tyler or Andris Biedrins.
McGuire will likely have to accept a veteran minimum contract and the Hawks, Hornets and Bobcats might have interest in the forward

I expect Danny to make a significant move once D12 is off the market.
D12 going to Houston helps our lottery protected pick we own and that would solidify us being able to cash in next year.
Now if Danny keeps Josh on this team, what kind of salary demands is Josh willing to accept? I know someone out there next offseason will be willing to overpay for him.
Danny dealing Willie is Danny getting something for nothing because Willie could have done that deal without any help from us
Big Ray, there is no way Danny can rid himself of LD because LD isn’t going to rock the boat. I would want the same thing, but the only thing Danny can do is watch us get off to a 3-10 start and then justify being able to replace him.
Chicago signing Nate Williams gives them more cushion while they wait on DRose to fully recover. They might still be one of the better East teams. It doesn’t appear they are going to amnesty Boozer.

Our Big 3 (If you can call them that):
Josh
Al
Lou
That’s not a terrible Big 3 – and all are going to be at or near their prime this season.
Scoring is not my concern with this team – Defense is.
It just seems like we are going to outscore folks to win.
And Morrow can be such a difference maker on this team – it’s all up to him – and LD also, if LD will utilize him.

Of course, there is also the fact that the group formerly known as the ASG finally understood that they needed a suit to do the work, and to keep their uneducated grubby little hands out of it.

Kevin M ,
Totally get your point. Now here’s my counterpoint:
At some point “not rocking the boat” just isn’t good enough. In fact, LD is once again on the hot seat for this season (he’s only under contract until the end of this season, if I remember right), if not a lame duck.
Not rocking the boat does not equate to sufficient winning. And that’s what this organization is finally going to be about. Winning. LD is gonna have to prove he can really coach this season. If he can’t, then a roster of quick guards and athletic forwards is not going to be competitive. While we wait for next summer’s free agency bonanza (this should be fun…I hope) LD gets to show he knit this group together, one that doesn’t have the same core it always did (finally!).
So I’m not so sure “I won’t rock the boat” is gonna be a good enough alibi. Ferry has control, he proved it by breaking up the core. If I were LD, I’d be looking real hard at my “offensive brilliancy” scheme again. He’s gonna need it, among other things.

Marcus, the last time the Hawks spent more than $3M on a “external” free agent (before the Lou signing a few weeks ago) was in 2005 with a guy name Speedy Claxton. IMO, the reason FAs weren’t interested in playing for the Hawks was because the Hawks were only willing to spend on their own FAs and wouldn’t pay others more than a minimum type fee. Danny Ferry has obviously changed things by clearing up cap space and showing no loyalty to the core group. So, yes, free agents (who ultimately want to get paid) will consider the Hawks because we have an ample supply of what they want, cash.
SteveW, I like Pietrus, always have, but I think a player of that ilk can be had on a one year deal every season. One year, Matt Barnes, another year Pietrus, the next year Damien Wilkins and so on. I don’t think you risk falling $1M short of offering a max deal to an elite free agent because you wanted Pietrus on a multi-year contract.
Dominic McGuire is a GREAT rebounder and above average defender. And unlike Pietrus, Barnes or Delfino, he has both the height and the mass to defend this conference’s better SFs. But if he scores more than 8 points in a game, confetti should fly from the Philips Arena ceiling.

Hawks vs. Heat (No, it’s not as stupid as it seems at first glance!):
Josh vs. LeBron – LeBron wins, but Josh can at least compete with him
Al vs. Bosh – Probably somewhere around a draw. Most would probably rate Bosh slightly higher – but some did see some slippage in Bosh this past season.
Lou vs. DWade – Don’t Ask. Only thing we got going for us here is that DWade is getting older, and has been injury prone.
Harris vs Chalmers – Advantage Hawks
Teague vs Cole – Advantage Hawks. But Cole can be very dangerous in spurts.
And you could switch Teague and Harris out in their comparisons and get the same thing.
ZaZa vs Anthony – Advantage Hawks, but again in spurts, Anthony can be serviceable.
Ivan vs Haslem – Haslem is a beast as a rebounder. But he is older and injury prone. Some I’m going to say somewhere around equal for now. We’re not talking about Haslem in his prime, but now.
Morrow vs. Ray Allen – If Morrow is on his game this season, this may not be as big of a blowout as it first appears. Ray is really hobbled, he’s 37, and his D is almost shot. But he probably still has the advantage on intangibles. Morrow will be 27, and should be entering his prime, we’ll see.
Korver vs. Battier – No contest. Only hope is again Battier has been injury prone. Battier holding up for 40+ minutes per nite in the Championship series really pushed Miami over the top.
Jordan Jenkins vs Mike Miller – Not sure how good JJ is going to be, or Miller’s health, so we’ll call it a draw for now.
DeShawn Stevenson vs Rashard Lewis – Probably a wash – both really on the downside of their careers. Again, we’re not talking about 5 years ago, but this year.
Johan Petro vs. Pittman/Darko, or whoever else they roll out there – Probably about a wash. Petro may have a slight advantage in some cases, but not enough to notice.
I mean, look, Miami has a better team. But they definitely have some X factors also. DWade, Miller, Haslem, Battier are all injury prone at this point in their careers. Wade had off season knee surgery, never a good thing for a player like him. And Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen are def. on the way down, and have some injury issues also. So it’s not like they’re invincible.
But Riley has sure done a good job at building that team, surrounding the Big 3 with talent. And LeBron has come on like a Champ. The guys the best player in the world. No doubt.
And Arinson doesn’t mind paying the tax, Big Time. The Heat’s cap situation is abysmal – but as long as Arinson is paying the bills, it really doesn’t matter.
They got a bunch of old, oft injured geezers on the hook for alot of money long term
And I just realized I left James Jones off the list – Maybe Jordan Williams (doubtful), Mike Scott, Pape Sy, Keith Benson, or Pietrus or somebody else we sign cancels him out.
Miami sure has alot of bodies coming off that bench.

SteveW,
The new Lebron (non-choking because he already won the title and now knows how to play point-Power Forward) is such an advantage that you can stop the conversation right there.
Josh is a great multi-talented player, but he does not have the foot speed, nor the post/man to man D to keep up with Lebron.
Let’s first worry with reaching the ECF and not make fools out of ourselves against MIA.
PS: Wade will officially take a back seat, as he did from midway the BOS series and he will not beat up his body as in the past. MIA will coast to a #1 seed but without looking for 70 wins in order to keep his main cogs fresh.
PPS: Our current roster is extremely soft on D. We need to bank on an highly efficient use of our tiny personnel to get within the #6 to #8 seed dogfight.

But Durant’s O is so unstoppable and incredible, within the flow of the sets, that talent alone puts him in the conversation.
But I agree, I think Miami did some tanking this season to stay fresh.
And Coach Spo’ was masterful resting the oft injured bench guys in the playoffs, giving them rest games, and then letting them be fresh in the next game. Well managed rotations. Fantastic really.

Why? The guy has clutch in his game. He has hit big game shots time and time again. The only way we can get Bynum is if in a Howard trade scenario:

The Hawks are on their way to being a dynasty. Ferry is a genius. And we will still seriously contend this year I honestly don’t think losing Joe and Marvin will make us take a huge hit in production since we added Lou Will who only scored 3 fewer than Joe (off the bench). Joe’s clutchness, size, and overall defense will be missed but his clutchness will be replaced by John Jenkins and Lou Williams. A defensive sf would help. But with the team the way it is now we will still be a top 5 seed. And of course next year 2013 we will pick up a star or 2 (hopefully SUPERstar) and we will win our first NBA championship of many to come. Btw Josh Smith is a superstar and a top 3 PF in the NBA. I don’t see the value of dumping LD anytime soon. Ferry likely has a list of coaching candidates to consider next summer. He hasn’t built a team this year to do anything more than compete for the back-end of the playoffs… even with a better head coach. So LD gets to audition for another head coaching job (or offensive coordinator) and Ferry makes his big move next summer with both the roster and the coaching staff.

Astro Joe

Kevin, Ferry probably has both available and contracted candidates on his list. It may also depend on what he can do with the roster next summer. If he brings in some experienced and productive vets, then he may want to go with one type of coach than if he misses out on that type of player and has to build with younger guys. Here’s an example, if he can put together a roster capable of making the Finals in the next 3 years, maybe a Jerry SLoan type makes sense. if he can’t, and he has to use the cap space to trade for players like Derrick Favors or Derrick Williams or sign OJ Mayo (young guys not ready to compete for a title imediately), then Sloan probably isn’t the right guy at his age… maybe Brian Shaw or Mo Cheeks is a better selection. IMO, there is very little chance that LD stays beyond this year and the right coach to replace him should be based (in part) on the roster.
But all of this is easy for me because I have ZERO expectations of the coming season. Many of you are predicting far better results. I’m personally hoping for a lottery pick next June… avoid the playoffs and have a lottery pick, cap space AND a new head coach to start a new era of Hawks basketball.

Outside of the top 6 potential 2013 FAs, there is no one I would offer more than 10 mil (or a big contract) to. I like Harden and Ibaka but I wouldn’t break the bank for either of them. I hope Danny doesn’t overpay for mediocre players next summer like Detroit did with Gordon and Charlie V a few summers ago. LD is an adequate coach; he’s just not a coach that is going to make us a contender. Is he as good as Terry Stotts? Probably.
According to the ASG, he’s better than Casey or Mark Jackson, so opinions vary widely on LD.
I’m ready to put him in the rear view no matter if we are going to compete this year or not. We have to pay for leadership. I don’t see why that is such a hard concept to understand.
Danny’s being too nice keeping LD at this point. If everyone on this roster is being held accountable, LD better be at the top of the list.

That was a great post. GM DF is set to perfection, he did the first measure which was get the support of the fan base. Now he freed up cap room while keeping us in the playoffs while having no expectations from the fans on this season. also with LD at the helm we can see what he does on a contract year where he has the pressure on himself to perform for his next gig while if we suck early theres the excuse to fire him. GM DF has a few coaches and i believe who we get will dictate who he goes after. jerry sloan would be an amazing fit if we can land dwight or another big name guy. its not like the only people we can get our the free agents in 13, look at joe johnson he got traded with four years left so big name guys can always be moved for a price.

There’s no way I’d take Chalmers over Teague or Harris. On that team, Chalmers is a PG in name only, since LeBron and DWade control the ball and the OFF. He hasn’t proven he can successfully function as the focal point of an OFF and control or run it as the teams true PG who controls the OFF and the ball.
Lebron and Wade are the true interior defenders on that team, and our shooters will force them to play more on the perimeter. Wade is their leading shotblocker, and Harris, Jenkins, Williams, and Morrow will force him to play our shooters rather than roaming and providing interior help DEF. Do you think LeBron will drop off Korver to help inside?
Weak DEF players like Korver don’t have to try and stop players as big, strong and athletic as LeBron. He just has to try and take away certain things that he does well and force him to do something else that he’s less effective at doing. Instead of trying to stop him from driving, he should give ground and force him to become a midrange shooter, which he’s not good at doing.
Drew has to adjust our DEF where we play a combination of intelligent and good team DEF.

Hey steven, FYI:
In 2011 (Horford’s last full season) Al received 7 votes for the NBA-All-Defensive team, including 3 first place votes. He had the same number of overall votes as Josh, but Josh only had 1 first place vote (a travesty). He had more votes than Battier, Ibaka, and Sefalosha, all noted defensive players.
So at least 4 NBA head coaches disagree with your view of Horford’s defense. Pretty good results for all that lax effort, eh?

I’m going to say it again….if Al Jefferson was worth 2 1st round picks for Utah, Josh and Al have at least that much value.
“The Timberwolves agreed to send Jefferson to the Jazz for two future first-round draft picks and center Kosta Koufos.”
On a twisted note, Utah had to send back one of Minny’s draft picks this year because Utah qualified for the playoffs. So the Jefferson deal ends up being 1 1st round and Koufos.
So yes, Josh and Al are at least worth the value of what that Jefferson deal ended up being.

Jefferson can’t protect the rim any better than Horford, shoots a lower %, and is a worse rebounder. He’s too much the same player as Horford, with a better low post game, and less of everything else. All you would be doing is ditching Teague for a basically even swap. Of course you’d be getting rid of your nemesis, so I guess that makes it ok by you. I think that’s a bad trade. I’d be shocked if Ferry didn’t agree.

“Danny’s being too nice keeping LD at this point.”
Nice has nothing to do with it. LD was part of the deal when Ferry took the job. When Gearon was on the phone with Ferry trying to sell him on taking this job, he told him “we like LD, we don’t want to start over with a new coach, we want him to finish the third year of his deal and evaluate after this season.”
Ferry has a 6-year contract. He’s not worried about it. LD will either prove the ASG right or prove them wrong. If he turns the corner as an NBA coach this year, Ferry doesn’t have to conduct a coaching search. Here are LD’s biggest liabilities as a coach:
1. Has a tendency to play end-of-the-bench scrubs ahead of rotation players in the playoffs.
He did this in his first year when he played Jason Collins and Josh Powell ahead of Zaza Pachulia. As you saw this season, Zaza is a legit starting center. Powell will likely never play in the NBA again. LD did it again this year by playing scrubs like Pargo and Green ahead of legitimate rotation players T-Mac and KH. In both seasons, LD’s absurd lineup decisions in the playoffs cost the Hawks an opportunity to go to the ECF. The talent was there. LD just decided to play scrubs instead of rotation players. Please note that Ferry has declined to bring ANY of LD’s pet scrubs back.
2. LD failed to hold his players accountable for not running his offense and not playing every possession on defense.
LD’s failure to hold players accountable resulted in another failed hero-ball effort by Joe against the Celtics, and resulted in Josh quitting on plays to argue with refs, which may have cost the Hawks the series against Boston. Joe is in Brooklyn now, and LD’s nose isn’t long enough to get a sniff anymore. All that remains to be seen is, will LD continue to completely fail to get Josh to play at an All-Star level. LD has been coaching Josh since his rookie season. That’s how far back this failure goes. The talent has been there, LD has simply failed to properly harness it.
3. LD gave away the second Heat game by not using the foul the Hawks had to give and allowing Bosh to tie it in regulation with a three.
LD’s not the only coach to make this mistake. SVG did it in the NBA finals, allowing Fisher to turn the tide of that series and cost Orlando the only chance it had to win a title with Dwight. It’s still a stupid mistake for any coach to make.

“Ferry should go after Yi Jianlian as a free agent.”
I like this idea. If Yi has a breakout year with the Hawks, it’s another feel-good story. I like the idea of that more than I like the idea of handing the small forward job to Barnes, an idiot who mouths off to cops while he doesn’t even have an NBA contract.
“Dominic McGuire, the SF/PF that locked Joe up lol.”
Joe scored 18 points in that game. Don’t know if DM “locked him up” but he might be a good pickup.
“A deal of Teague and Horford to Utah for Al Jefferson would probably move us past the 2nd round.”
How many All-Defensive first team votes did Al Jefferson have last year? How many All-NBA selections does he have? And you want to trade a better player for him PLUS throw in another proven starter? Don’t respond to the HORFORD HATING TRASH that hangs around these blogs posting one stupid comment after another. It appears they believe if they repeat the same stupid comments and suggestions over and over again often enough, they will convince themselves and others that their special brand of BS will somehow become factual and make sense. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!
I read an article that listed the available FA SF still on the market, and it looks like we’ll have to initiate a trade to get one that gives us what we want. The trade exception that we just got from trading WGreen might be a step in that direction. The big overweight Greek player that was mentioned in the trade won’t ever become a Hawk, nor will he likely ever play in the NBA, after not getting a shot in the 9yrs since he was drafted in 2003.
We didn’t trade for him, we traded for his rights and nothing else. Right now, it looks like JSmith will be our starting SF, but I don’t think it will happen. First, it will drastically reduce our depth and talent at backup OC. It will also limit us to having only 1 of our acquired outside shooters in the starting lineup, which would encourage Josh to shoot outside more rather than posting up.
Since the nature of the moves Ferry has made so far is based on next yr, it appears this season will be a season of evaluation, experimentation, and transition. Ferry will want to see which of our soon to be FAs will prove valuable and productive enough to be considered for resigning next yr. That will be very important with pending FAs Zaza, Josh, Teague, Harris, Morrow, Williams, Petro, and Stevenson.

One more thing on the “fire LD now” discussion. Ferry’s moves so far have either been neutral or have improved his boss’ financial commitment. If he fires LD now, LD gets his last year of salary plus ownership has to pay the new head coach. For what? Again, the ‘12-13 team is not built to do anything special or wonderful. Somebody suggested Danny Ferry will give LD enough rope to hang himself. Actually, I think Ferry is putting LD in the best possible position to succeed. By removing Collins, Green, Pargo, Damp, Stack and Vlad from the rotation, Ferry takes away the temptation LD couldn’t resist, to give minutes to terrible players. Ferry’s arrival could be the best thing that could have possibly happened to LD’s career. If LD fails this year, he may never get another HC position. Ferry has made it more likely LD will succeed.

teague/harris
lou will/morrow/jenkins
jsmooth/korver
al/ivan(hopefully)
zaza/petro
that leaves deshawn, jordan williams, keith benson, Def SF left for our 12 man rotation. maybe we take keith benson over petro as well. i think Yi Jianlin will get a better than vet min contract elsewhere to be a backup PF.

But over the long haul – to get to the clutch situations, I take the other two.
But your right – Chalmers is clutch usually (thinking about a TO or two he made in the playoffs late, but still).
And I would have much rather have had Chalmers for 4mill, which is his contract, than Hinrich for 8 mill.
Even if we would have to give Chalmers the Mid level of 5.2 mill per season, way better than Hinrich.
And I like Hinrich, and he was somewhat of an overall upgrade over Bibby (not offensive statistics, but the eye test) – but that guy had lost some when he got here.
Probably his high point was the Orlando playoff series – played solid – I have no idea what his stats were, I just remember he did ok.
And Chicago just signed Hinrich for 2 years 8 mill – I know he’s Coach TT’s type player, but really? He’ll play hard for a few games, then the nagging injuries come back.

AJ, I can agree to this stop-gap logic if we are on the plan of not competing for a championship this year. If you are considering a run at the trophy, LD can’t be your man, 1M or no 1M. We’ve wasted way more than 1M over the years that BK and Sund were here.
If you don’t have the proper system in place, how are you going to know what guys to bring here?
LD is about sharing the ball, running his Princeton offense and what looks like little flexibility to play differently. I see us shooting a lot of long jumpers which you die by (ask OKC), and never attacking a team’s weaknesses. We play caution ball, but we do have to have top talent to attack with. So what we have gotten maybe has been the best we could have expected.
Our defense appeared to be highly ranked and our offense was good when the jumpers were falling. I don’t think we get to the FT line enough. That’s how OKC and MIA get a lot of points.
OKC was ranked 2nd in FTA behind DEN, MIA 8th and they settle for a lot of jumpers.
The Hawks were 21st, tied WASH at 21 FTA/game. OKC is getting 6 more pts/game than we are at the charity stripe.
Now based on our current roster, who’s going to get you points at the line? Teague / Lou and Josh, but Josh leaves bunches of points at the FT line each year. Josh is 29th in FTA, our best Hawk in that category.
Others: Joe was 75th(pathetic), JT was 88th, Zaza 94th
Others: Lou was 35th(we might like this move more and more every day)
Tyreke Evans – 45th
Rudy Gay – 46th
Getting those last 3 on the same team isn’t that much of a reach. I know Al is not included here, but he’s not much of a FTA person either.
(ranked 112th in 2010-11)…pathetic once again.

AJ, I can agree to this stop-gap logic if we are on the plan of not competing for a championship this year.
Kevin, there is NOTHING about this roster that suggests Ferry is making a run at a title this year. NOTHING. Do you really think that Ferry was able to gut the team for the purpose of clearing cap space for next summer AND improve the roster at the same time? As currently constructed, we will look to defend SGs and SFs in the league (the two positions that feature some of the most lethal offensive weapons capable of creating their own shot) with a combination of Morrow, Jenkins, Lou Williams, Korver, Josh and Stevenson. Stevenson is one dimensional and can’t likely play more than 15 minutes/game. Josh is sub-optimized chasing SFs around the court. Odds are high that we will watch some career scoring nights from opposing SGs and SFs this coming season. So again, I ask, what is it about this roster that looks ready to compete for a Finals appearance.
Kevin, LD is an average head coach on his best day. I am in no way defending his competency. I am simply saying that the time to make a change is not now… this is a roster in transition. These 1-year FAs are auditioniong for long-term contracts in the future. Many of them are more likely headed toward the year-to-year phase of their careers. IMO, we’re looking at a 42 win team if everything goes right.

STEVEW-I believe it was before FA started, but I read where the Hawks had Gee high on their radar. And what has Yi done lately to warrant a contract? He’s regressed from a starter to a D-League caliber bench warmer. We don’t need anymore of that because Ferry won’t have it.

If Houston decides they don’t like Harrellson as a backup to Asik, Danny should go get him. He has a knack for rebounding and getting his hands dirty. A good cheap backup, and better than Yi from what I’ve seen out of 4 years of Yi.
Harrellson has to be released by 8/15 or Houston owes him 762K.
And Yi was being considered by us to be drafted in Al’s slot in ‘07. I didn’t remember that Al was picked one slot behind KD and 1 slot ahead of Conley, 3 slots ahead of Yi.
Aside of Marc Gasol(48th to the Lakers), BK got that draft pick right!

Some people call themselves fans, no need to panic the boys will be just fine. I recall during last season josh was the true leader on the team, duh, why do you think he took the last shot in game six, joe didn’t want it, also during joe’s abscene, josh clearly dominated, there was better ball movement, and everybody ate. Although I going to miss joe, josh will average around 24, 26 points per, hell he may get a few more triple-doubles this year, we now have better shooters and more space for josh and al to operate. Joe missed, I think three games with the knee before the break last season, one game that stands out is hawks vs. thunder, josh went head up with Durant, clearly dominated, this tells you he can do this every night, with joe gone he will do this every night. With better shooters on the roster, this will prove my theory to be exact. On the coaching side, I truly think LD will do a good job, hopefully the players buy in.

It’s amazing how we are are all self proclaimed general managers with all the needed solutions to guarantee immediate championships. How is it that we keep getting overlooked for these positions? However, I do think that Danny Ferry is proving to be a much better GM than he ever was a player. Probably the best acquisition that the Hawks have made in several years. Something tells me that we may be in for something good.
