The Hawks 2012-13 regular-season schedule was released Thursday and fans will get an opportunity to see two former key members of their team – Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams – return to Philips Arena in a five-day span.
The schedule also includes games against the Eastern and Western Conference champions, the Heat and Thunder, in a five-day span in the first month of the season.
Here are several other notables about the schedule:
Lin-sane start: The Hawks open the regular-season at home against the Rockets on Friday, Nov. 2. That will be Jeremy Lin’s first game with Houston after leaving the Knicks as a free agent this month. The season ends in New York against the Knicks and the Hawks old head coach Mike Woodson. Five of the eight games in April to end the season are at home.
Welcome back: Williams will return to Atlanta on Friday, Jan. 11 with the Jazz, exactly six months after he was traded. Johnson returns on Wednesday, Jan. 16 as a member of the Nets after he was traded in the off-season. The Hawks next game is also against Johnson, a Jan. 18 matchup in Brooklyn. Johnson will play once more in Atlanta on March 9.
Champions: The Hawks host the defending NBA champion Heat on Nov. 9. They will travel to Oklahoma City to play the Thunder on Nov. 4, the second game of the season.
Longest stretches: The schedule includes a season-high five straight home games from Nov. 24 to Dec. 7. It includes a season-long road trip of six games between Feb. 24 and March 4. The schedule features 30 stretches of three games in four nights. It also includes four stretches of four games in five nights.
Take a break: The NBA All-Star weekend will be Feb. 14-17 in Houston. The Hawks will play 51 games before the break, 26 at home.
National TV: The Hawks have six games on national television. They are on ESPN three times (twice vs. the Knicks and once vs. the Heat) and on NBA TV three times (vs. the Magic, Bulls and Pacers).
Holiday play: The Timberwolves will be this year’s Martin Luther King Day opponent at Philips Arena. They do not play on Thanksgiving or Christmas day but will spend New Year’s Eve in Houston and New Year’s Day in New Orleans.

Why not let the big man play the 4 and the 5 to mix it up a little bit? Hmmmmmm
His passing skills will be very effective with all of the fantastic shooters Danny has brought on board for Larry to use at his disposal..
He could play at the elbows to look over the defense and deliver pin point passes to wide open lock down jump shooters in the house…
It going to be an interesting season up coming for sure…..

its to bad we didnt get randy foye for that 1 yr 5 mill deal. our back court would be the most interchangeable/undersized group ever.
teague then devin harris
randy foye then lou will
all 4 can play point guard only teague couldnt play SG
we will still make the playoffs and maybe get to the 2nd. we will be fast and furious and that will be fun to watch.
we still need to offer AL and devin harris to ORL at the deadline for dwight(throw in a 1st or both 1st’s) ORL will have to trade dwight and we may have the best offer, a all-star C(hahah) and an expiring contract and 1st’s

As for teague at 20ppg(15ppg most), that ain’t gona happen. Teague won’t make the all-star team either over Rondo,D-will,john wall. Josh will make the all-star team finally(GM DF will push for it) and he will choose to stay in ATL with a 5yr 75 mill contract extension. If Josh does’nt make the all-star team he will leave ATL.

JT was third behind Josh and Joe for 20 point games in a season. Okay, it is a stretch – but if he is unleashed – he could. I am sure he with this team he can average 15ppg 7 assist. LD has to let him play. Looking at our roster, we have only two guys over 30 (and both are only 31).
I do hope we sign Benson. He actually looked pretty good in the Summer League.
I think you are sleeping on the Celtics. They have gotten better. Avery will surely me better this season and Jason Terry is an upgrade over Ray Allen. You also add Jeff Green off the bench – who will get plenty of minutes behind Bass and Peirce.
The bulk of the Knicks wins happened with Lin. Also, with Shuppart out – think that team will be a little worse.

People said the Hawks would not make the playoffs after we lost Horford but we ended up being the 4 seed. The only thing we lost was Joe Johnson. Marvin and Collins really don’t count. Devin Harris, Lou, and Jenkins will make up for the loss of Joe.
The Hawks will be a 4 or 5 seed this year. Mark my words.

We need another rebounder/inside scorer, preferably at small forward. If Smith gets hurt, we will be in a world of hurt. We can not afford to lose Zaza or Smoove during the season for a lengthy period. I wonder if McGrady will be picked up by anyone this season. I’m sure he’s trying to sort out what team will have a chance to do well this season.

The man took a contract they offered (who wouldn’t) – I would understand there is a salary cap and if team paid me that much, that’s less they could pay other good players to improve the team.
Other players (Lebron) take a little less money so team can pay others to improve team.
That’s why ATL fans are glad he gone, he put himself before team.

Youn won’t see Dwight Howard in Atlanta. So give it up. And no great loss either. Pachulia has won the hearts of fans, but he didn’t win mine. Still has bad hands and still finds way to lose crucial matchups. I would say he would be my favorite trade item….maybe some of the GMs have fallen for Pachulia like diehard Hawks fans (sheesh). Be nice if Teague has a good year, but I give that 50/50. The Hawks may win this year, they may be really good, but it’s gonna require UNITY and CONSISTENCY.

It’s a 2 year deal with a team option for the 2nd year, so really it’s only a one year deal for $10 million. That isn’t that bad of a deal. The Hawks really could have used AK47 for a short-term deal like that.

The problem with being an “uptempo” team, like Ferry claims they are going to be this year, is that when you run into other teams that can play uptempo but also have the size and balance to score and defend in the half court, you are screwed. And the Hawks have a team like that in their own division.

I assume you are talking about the Heat, with an aging D-Wade who is starting to slow down. Once you get past James, the Heat really are a predictable team. I think the Hawks with Josh and Al will give them problems in the front court. I want to see how the Hawks get a solid SF, who can defend and I like our chances to surprise some folks in the East.

I have the Wiz as a 8th seed. Nene and Okafur will really help that team. I would start Williams and have a super quick back court. I am a little worried about Ferry coaching the team saying the ball will be in Harris and Teague’s hand a lot. I would move Morrow to the 3 – but Josh would play a lot of three.
I wish the hype will end about getting a center. In 2012-2013 – there are less than 5 centers who will average a double- double and less than 10 who will record a double in one category. Fortunately, with Al at the 5, we can be one of those teams, The only other centers that will do it are Lopez, Howard and Al Jefferson. (if he plays the 5).

I think the Hawks will be just as good or better this season. Here is my breakdown by position
C Horford vs. ZaZa. It is funny how so called ‘fans” have a short-term memory. I remember during the season when Big Al bruised the Bulls – and help guide a massive comeback!. He did almost the same thing in the playoffs last year especially game 5 and 6. Equally, I have had to replace at least two tv’s because ZaZa will not DUNK the damn ball to win a game! Big Al.
PF Smith vs. Smith Josh had a career season, and believe it or not – has gotten better every year in the NBA. I have heard references of him being a ‘poor man’s” LeBron James – and actually I will agree. His jumper was soooooo much better this season and I imagine he will improve in every category. His fg % will greatly improve from the easier shots he will take and his assist certainly will improve from having Kover having wide open looks.
SF Morrow vs. Johnson. Well we will take a big back seat here. Joe actually had a pretty good season and a couple of games he did play like a big dog. Having Morrow starting at the 3 is almost like having Marvin type production. I can’t believe I am saying this – but I really would not have done the Marvin deal AFTER getting rid of Joe. We could use him now.
SG Williams vs KH Sweet Lou will make a lot of us forget about Joe Johnson really fast! Again, adding Lou and getting rid of KH is a major upgrade – almost equal to comparing Joe and Morrow. I can envision having six Hawks averaging double-figures and Williams could lead the team in scoring.
PG Teague vs Teague You got to love it when your point guard helps the Phillips earn the nickname “The Highlight Factory” The dunks over Ray Allen and Channing Frye should have been on the ESPY’s. Like Josh, he has improved every season and really, the Hawks go as Jeff Teague goes. He will contend for one of those PG spots in the East and can easily be the third best behind Rondo and WIlliams. Only LD can hold him back by playing Harris.

The Bench:
Shedding $36 million of your payroll can (Joe, Kirk and Marvin)- can get you a plethora of players who are not playing for veteran minimums. If you can off the bench last season for the Hawks (except Marvin) – you were payed the vet minimum.
Korver, Harris, Jenkins are certainly upgrades. Goodbye T-Mac, Collins,Stackhouse, Pargo, Green Damp (although I would not mind if Damp and Green came back).

why do people think that the Nets are going to be a threat this year. They lose Anthony Morrow and Farmar for the burden that’s Joe Johnson’s contract; They sign Wallace 40/4. The only people they could get is inconsistent C.J. Watson and Keith Bogans, also they got reggie flopper and ”ol man” stackhouse for a bench. Despite the fact that the east is weaker offensively, BOS, MIA, IND, and WAS aren’t to be underestimated. The Nets are a 5th-6th seed at best until next year

Dont know about yall, but I kinda like the idea of Ivan starting at SF if and ONLY IF we cant get a starting caliber SF b4 opening game. Ivan has good size, 6′8″ and very quick hands. He can play pretty good defense, stole the ball pretty good last season, is NOT AFRAID OF THE LEBRONS’ AND KOBE’S in this league, and most of all, IVAN KNOWS HOW TO REBOUND!! The Hawks will only have six nationally-televised games during the 2012-2013 regular season. This Hawks [franchise] is [officially] the “Rodney Dangerfield” of the NBA; this [Atlanta] team gets no respect [at all].

The Clippers will have 30 [thirty] nationally-televised games during the 2012-2013 regular season. #ClipperNation [or is it #ClippersNation?]

Hawks vs. Heat:
Assuming the Heat play small, which is how their roster is shaping up – and with our small roster, it looks like
C – Al/ZaZa vs Bosh/Anthony – ADV = EVEN (roughly)
PF – Josh/Ivan vs LeBron/Haslem – ADV = HEAT
SF – Morrow/Korver vs Battier/Lewis – ADV = EVEN (for various reasons)
SG – Lou/Jenkins vs DWade/Allen – ADV = HEAT
PG – Teague/Harris vs Chalmers/Norris – ADV = HAWKS
It’s not like the Heat just smoke us or something. They are not overwhelmingly better than the ATL. And the Hawks have gone from being the oldest team in the NBA last season, to a bunch of guys entering their prime, including our Big 3 of Josh, Lou, and Al.
Ages for the upcoming season:
Jenkins 21/22
Teague 24
Lou 26
Al 26
Petro 26
Josh 27
Morrow 27
Ivan 28/29
ZaZa 28/29
Harris 29/30
Korver 31
Stevenson 31/32
Keep Benson 24, Brooks 24, maybe Jordan Williams 21 or Pape Sy 25 – And you have not only a young team, but one where most of your major players are at, or very near their prime.
We may be pretty good. Exciting anyhow.
Can’t see us stopping many folks anyhow.
And even deeper than last season.
ZaZa and Ivan are the new McNasty Twins in the NBA BTW.
Start: ZaZa, Al, Josh in the Frontcourt – that’s pretty good.
Start Teague, Lou, or Harris in the Backcourt – that’s pretty good.
Very good depth also.
I will be interested to see if we sign another 3, or are we going to play Josh at 3 – Or Morrow/Korver/Stevenson.

If we start small – and keep basically the same team we have now, a 2nd unit of:
ZaZa
Ivan
Korver
Jenkins
Harris
With Petro and Stevenson as our 11th and 12th guys is almost as good of a 2nd unit I can remember the Hawks ever having.
Spud, Battle, Levingston, and Carr were maybe a little better.

Najeh – If we have Korver starting anywhere, we are in serious trouble. A 3 spot of Morrow/Korver/Stevenson would be the weak spot of this team position wise if that’s how we roll this season.
Lou/Jenkins/Harris/Morrow/Korver guarding anybody at the 2 spot is another problem.
We can go big or small – but we’ve got some deficiencies either way.
Still looks like a fun team to me – Can’t wait to see Lou and Harris is action as Hawks! And looking forward to a great frontcourt in Al, Josh, ZaZa, and Ivan.
Micheal Redd looked ok in Phoenix last season. Sign him at the 3, and if he’s healthier than TMac, we could cause some problems.
Liking Alonzo Gee alot also if we could sign him. I’d take Delfino and/or Pietrus at the 3 also. Couple of other names of SF’s i saw listed that I can’t recall right now, that are available – looked ok.

I think the Hawks will fill all 15 spots for roster:
C – ZaZa / Petro / Benson
PF- Horford / Ivan Johnson / Jordan Williams
SF – Josh Smith / Kyle Korver / DeShawn Stevenson
SG – Lou Williams / Anthony Morrow / John Jenkins
PG – Jeff Teague / Devin Harris / ??? –
Hawks should either bring back Pargo or sign John Lucas III for 3rd Point guard slot…….this team is very deep…great team to go to battle with for 82 game season….also the hawks should give Michael Scott a little more time to develop and possibly D-league him or just wait to bring him back next year

I would start Ivan at the SF slot.
He played there in the D-League.
He has excellent lateral movement, quick swiping hands and his shot is not that bad, just needs more minutes.
He can drive right AND left and is deadly driving left (in particular against PF, but still…).
If we do not make any moves on the SF department, that would be my choice since he and Josh could be interchangeable during games giving different looks to the same opposing players.
Consequently, I would play A LOT OF ZONE D.

Teague an All-Star? Boy, that would be great, it would mean that he had a better first half than either Rondo, Deron or Kyrie Irving (assuming all stay healthy). It would also mean that he holds off other 1st time All-Star candidates like Kyle Lowery, John Wall and Brandon Jennings.
Hawks seem to have better weekend games than in year’s past. Hopefully, that will help with the attendance figures.
Hope springs eternal. I’d be shocked if the Hawks win more than 42 games next season (based on today’s roster + a minimum wage SF added before camp).

If the Hawks issue in previous years were related to being soft, too nice or too young, I think this year it may very weel be “too small”. And I mean small, not just short. Our 3 best guards (regardless of position) appear to be Teague, Lou and Devin. At some point, LD will almost have to play 2 of them at the same time. Korver will likely play at least half his minutes at SF where he has physical limitations. The “turn your challenges into strengths” solution would be to use the team’s quickness as a weapon. So we have to hope that the quality bigs (i.e., Horford, Josh, Zaza & Ivan) become rebounding fiends who also learn how to set screens without being called for an offensive foul.

VaVa – I agree wholeheartedly about alot of Zone D – preferably 3-2 or 3-1-1, with Josh at the last 1.
And our bench is so deep and good – I wouldn’t mind if LD pulled a Gentry and just brought them in en masse like in Phoenix a couple of years ago, when they went to the WCF – and almost beat the Lakers.

Our team has always been built for speed. We are the Golden State Warriors of the East – but with much better talent. I think the Hawks will turn a lot of heads. Williams and Harris off the bench will be fun to watch – but we will get little other production from the bigs.

C’s (avg mins): Horford (25), Pachulia (20)
PF’s (avg mins): Smith (25), Horford (10), Ivan (10)
SF’s (avg mins): ??? (15), Korver (20), Smith (10)
SG’s (avg mins): Harris (15), Williams (20), Morrow (10)
PG’s (avg mins): Teague (35), Harris (5), Williams (5)
Player’ min/game averages:
Horford – 35

Teague – 35
Harris – 25
Williams – 25
Pachulia – 20
Korver – 20
SF TBD – 15
Ivan – 10
Morrow – 10
3rd string C – ???
Jenkins – ???
Hawks need that veteran SF (Pietrus…Barnes…Delfino) & a 3rd string center.
Stevenson, Petro, Scott, Williams, Benson & Taylor fight it out for roster spots 13-15.

Steve, when people say that “Player X will make the All-Star team”, they have to recognize that they are also saying that one of the “usual” All-Stars will NOT make it. In the case of East PGs, we know Derrick Rose won’t be there, but (IMO), a healthy Kyrie Irving clearly looks like a top 3-4 PG in the conference already.
I just noticed that Shawne Williams is a UFA. He would be a nice add for this team. 6′9″ with good size and experience. And we know that he could at least knock down open jump shots. The hawks are shopping at the Dollar Store for SFs at this point, and guys like Matt Barnes, Pietrus and Delfino (IMO) are too small to add to an already small team.
I wish we could get Wilson Chandler from Denver (in exchange for Morrow & Petro). Hard to imagine that we keep this collection of middling SGs with expiring contracts until February.

Wilson Chandler on this team will be a great addition. Wanted him last year when he was a FA. Will be tough to get him. One great thing about the trade was we acquired a lot of expiring contracts.
I haven’t heard of any team offering Ivan a contract yet – so hopefully we can resign him. I think most teams will offer him a minimum contract.
Ivan + ZaZa + Stevenson will bring toughness – and shed that “soft” label.
There are a lot of young and exciting PG’s in the East (Irving, Wall, etc)- but Teague certainly be in the mix behind Rondo and Williams

50 wins is a reasonable goal this up coming season for sure….
AllStar Al should not focus on scoring with his skill set..He should focus on help defense and rebounding….He should be considered a 4th or 5th option now if this team wants to advance…

Ivan at SF isnt the best place for him i think, he need to be our 6th man coming off the bench with aggresson for zaza or AL.
Teague Lou Will Josh AL ZaZa is our best starting lineup i think. let devin harris and Ivan come in 1st, with korver deshawn morrow jenkins coming in based on matchups. kito benson should be signed for minutes here and there at C.
I cant believe I left out Kyrie Irving the best PG in the NBA, he will be an all-star over Teague.
Greg Oden should be signed to a two or 3 year deal maybe 4mill a year and just let him take this whole year off and regain strength and stability and be ready for the 13-14 season and hope he can be our C, if he gets injured its not that big of a deal.

Slim, a few summers ago, Derrick Rose did the same thing, 1,000 jumpers/day. it was the summer before he won the MVP. Players can improve their skills if they work hard during the summer. They don’t need coaching to improve some of their fundamentals, just a strong work ethic (and a few helpers to chase down the loose balls). I’m not too worried about Teague’s work ethic anymore, my only concern is his ability to “run the team”. If he tucks his tail between his legs (like he did a few times last season ), Devin and even Lou will gladly take the reigns and won’t be in a hurry to give them back.

“Once you get past James, the Heat really are a predictable team. I think the Hawks with Josh and Al will give them problems in the front court.”
__________
I like this assessment. If, The Hawks can consistently put a hard body on LeBron and, make him feel the hard fouls … he will have less impact inside and, LeBron will fall in love with that inconsistent jumper. Bosh is so soft, Josh can neutralize him as well, The Heat will be exposed by The Hawks new jump shooters.
I say, put Ivan on LBJ from the elbows to the paint and, hit him in the mouth a few times.

Jason Terry is clearly not an upgrade over Ray Allen in Boston. He has hands of stone when it comes to passing, His defense is questionable. Two areas that Ray Allen did exceptionally well in. Also, Ray Allen moved phenomenally well without the ball to get to his spots. Ray Allen will not be replaced by Jet Terry in Boston, clearly a down grade for Boston at the two guard.

Im excited about this team as well..But,we look hecka good on paper, soooooooo….Don’t forget,we have LD as a coach. LD is a good assistant coach. Running players thru drills, being a liaison between players and coach he is remarkable.
But with the same staff and just knowing how he bites his tung(thats how i spell it) or tongue,i think we will be disappointed in his style and we may finish a lot worse off than this past year..
Was it not the plan to let T-Mac and the other old guy sit and play more in the playoffs? I know T-Mac got hurt but,he should have been getting more time as the season was coming to an end.
LD still has no control over Josh. And with Josh knowing that Ferry has his back,he may cut up and be something else and LD will be out of a job by mid season..
My prediction: We barely make the playoffs if we make it at all.
And LD is either fired before seasons end or as soon as the seasons over.

6th place at best….
We just turned a position of strength SF/SG into a weakness… The most important DEFENSIVE position in the EAST and haven’t replaced it with any defense…. But we are better at BACK-UP PG/SG
)))
I can’t wait to Korver/Morrow/Williams trying to guard Lebron/Wade/Pierce/Deng/Iggy/Melo….. So some of you can see the value in 6′8/6′9 wing players that can defend, rebound and score.
We should start Josh at the SF and let him chase around all those players…. If he plays SF and averages 18pts and 9reb, he will definitely make the the Allstar team.
Joe and Marvin will be missed in the 1st weak of the season.

I could deal with signing Matt Barnes for the 3 as well.
Alonzo Gee would be a nice pick up also.
And I don’t mind a 3G lineup of Teague, Lou, and Morrow, to run with Al and Josh.
Or a Big lineup of ZaZa, Al, and Josh up front, with Teague and maybe Lou (ok, he’s not big – I’m talking Frontcourt) starting with Harris and Morrow off the bench. Korver backing Josh up at the 3.
None of our lineups are ideal right now – but we have some good talent, if it’s utilized correctly.
How did Danny get Lou for 3 years 15.7mill? Speculation I heard is he sold him on a starting spot – it was on one of the blogs – Peachtree Hoops maybe? Been a few days.

Delfino is 6-6 230 – plenty big enough to guard most SF’s in the NBA. He’s been playing some good D under Skiles the past couple of years also.
Glad Korver is here – hope he brings some defensive fundamentals down from Coach TT in Chicago – Korver’s not much of a defender – but TT sure coached defensive intensity, importance, and fundamentals to those guys. Korver may help with that.
We have some talent and some depth. We have some defensive holes also – but I’m not discouraged.

Worst case scenario:
We stay the same, adding only filler like Benson, Sy, Scott types.
We make no trades.
At the end of the season, the only 3 guys we have signed for next season are:
Al at 12 mill
Lou for 5.4 mill
John Jenkins for 1.3 mill
That’s 18.7 mill tied up for 3 (if Jenkins turns out) pretty good players.
We would have 40 mill to spend on FA’s – our own like Josh, ZaZa, and Teague – and/or others – to get to the salary cap of about 58 mill.
We would then have the Full Midlevel and the Bi-Annual to use also – and maybe 2 more 1st picks and 2 more 2nd round picks next season.
I think you could build around Al, Lou, and Jenkins, and a whole ton of cap space, and some more picks.
Here’s hoping the Rockets make the playoffs – so we get their 1st round pick. Nice.

Josh is just a total beast right now, whether I get a mill. from him or not – one of the best 5 tool guys in the League – fills a stat sheet incredibly – and he’s in his prime.
The next 2 or 3 years are probably his best – ages 27, 28, and 29.
Al will probably start out slow – injury and all, but by 3-4 weeks into the season, we will have the pleasure of seeing two of our best players playing at or near the peak of their effectiveness – Al and Josh will be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA. Watch and see.
Lou could be also – as well as Teague. We’re going to be ok this year – just watch.
PS – In Brooklyn, the word is Gerald Wallace is declining significantly – and they just paid him 4 years, 40 mill – and they’ve already used their amnesty on Outlaw – those guys are sunk long term.
JJ 24 mill, DeRon 20+ mill, Lopez 17 mill, Wallace 10 mill – that’s in 4 years.

I have to agree on josh his shot looked alot better this yr, he is the one peice we need to keep imo

Its hard to say that when Teague is going into his 4th season. Mookie was one of the best Pg’s we’ve ever had but Teague can be just as good if not better imo. He has advantages in size speed and athleticism. When his jumper improves he could be a tony parker type player

Mookie had slightly better nimbers, but I really enjoy watching a point guard who “DOES NOT” put his tail behind his legs and tries to DUNK on opposing players.

Who cares if its going to lower the quality of play in the front court? Who cares if opposing coaches would love to have their guards dunk on Al? Who cases if the hawks will lose more games? Who cares if the fan moral will be down? Who cares if Al is a 12pt 8rb guy? Who cares? Who cares?
What is important is that Al is my friend and favorite player, I not a hawk fan and I dont care if they lose more and more. All I want is for my Al to play power forward.
Sorry Josh. I now you are a highly rate power forward and much better than Al. But Al is my favorite player. I even have Al horford boxers.

There is also word that Teague and Al are still being dangled for D12 or an up grade for the center position.
Im Ok With the new starter Harris. Hes a former Allstar who brings sound thinking to the point guard role. Hes A lot smarter than Teague and a better all around player.

Yeah, those are good points about trading Al and Teague. It will be nice to get rid of that funk called the “the Core” and move on to something better. I dont know if Teague or Al will ever have an impact on this team. they both seemed to struggle over than last few years. Al had 1 decent year and the rest has been below average. Funny, Al’s best year is less than Josh’s average over the years, Just to put in perspective what a waste Al has become. Teague just inst very smart. Not at all. That hurt the team to.

ESPN’s view of teams that have gone up and teams that have gone down. Obviously, we’re on the “step back” list:
5. Atlanta Hawks
I love Danny Ferry’s endgame. After taking over as the Hawks’ GM earlier this summer, he realized his new club’s ceiling was the second round of the playoffs. So Ferry immediately began dumping long-term contracts for expiring deals. The moves will position Atlanta to be a major player on next summer’s free-agent market — and perhaps beyond. Great plan.
But this season the Hawks will fall off a bit. Ferry’s purge cost them their best player, Joe Johnson, and Marvin Williams. The Hawks are still probably a playoff team, mind you, what with Josh Smith, Al Horford and the newly acquired Devin Harris. But they’re a bottom-rung playoff team at best. And that’s a plunge from the No. 4-5 seed territory they’re used to inhabiting.

Now, stop being politically correct with the lack confidence bull, Teague is a sissy. so is Al. But more than that teague is unintelligent as a point guard. The only thing Teague has going for him is he is young and fast. Dudes been here long enough. No more “Jerry’s” Kids.
This is a mans sport. Like Barkley said and every one in the NBA knows Hawks are too soft. Get ride of the softness that Deer in the Headlight Teague and I wannna play power forward Al bring to the table.
Al is very average and so will the hawks be if they keep players like him and teague around.

I dont’ know what’s going on with Al, unless he’s playing cautious. He just hasn’t looked very good this summer.
But if say Danny were to move Teague and Al, you would think they would be getting something big in return. We talk about Al being a top C in the East, when I don’t see him as a C at all. He is a PF playing near the basket by default. When Zaza is in there, we don’t have 2 C on the court.
Al is a C strictly by LD’s convention.
And Al’s contract is workable and can be moved. If you can move ISO, you can move anyone.

Pimp My Stats,
Your link prove my point. Jefferson been in the league 8 years and been to the playoffs twice, his rookie season and his 8th season. He advance to the 2nd round of the playoffs once in his rookie year when he avg less than 20mins and 6pts. Last season he advantage 18pts and his team got swept. Like I said, he put up good stats on bad teams. His team most successful year came his rookie year and when he played a limited role/mins.

LMAO at Nene, Okafor and Ariza being the best frontcourt in the EAST. Nene is not making an all star team…I just don’t know where all this talk comes from. Especially when you got Dwight, KG, Tyson Chandler, Al Horford, Brook Lopez and Hibbert (overrated) all vying for a spot.
Okafor is trash and Ariza is barely a starter…he puts up Marvin Williams numbers (10 pts 5 rebs)
DELUSION at it’s best.

Al Horford is a poor man’s Horace Grant. Al is closer to”Harvey Grant” in all actuality.
Josh Smith is the Hawks best player. He is probably the only keeper of the “Old Core Group” remaining on this team. Plain and simple, Al Horford could not get by a 39 year old KG. KG abused Al Horford everytime he played him. Amare abused Al. Does this make sense to you Highsider or Suckafree? Bay Bay down at the Ymca would abuse Al “Scrub” Horford.

Def wrong….on hoopshype…as much as I like the rumors section, not much else is kept up to date there Najeh.
Looking at Houston’s team now that they have signed Lin and Asik, they have Josh Harrelson there until 8/15 if they choose to release him. I wouldn’t mind seeing him here in ATL at 762K. He gives us a better option than Benson, who is Solomon Jones all over again. Harrelson has proven he can play and a decent rebounder. A cheaper version of Zaza IMO and we need depth.
I’m sure Danny’s not done, and it appears on the surface he isn’t interested in rebuilding.
And if you asked me who has the better record entering the playoffs between us and Brooklyn, you would probably take Brooklyn because they are solid in all 5 starting positions.

Orlando is playing this all wrong. If they were thinking about rebuilding, they should trade D12 ASAP so they can have the worse record as possible for them. A top 3 draft pick in this season’s draft, will go a long way to rebuilding the franchise. Otherwise, with D12, they’re a playoff team still that will have a hard time getting a franchise changing draft pick.

The Hawks best players in order, with ages and comments – And know, some players enter their prime at different stages than other players:
Josh Smith – Turns 27 Dec. 5th – Entering his prime
Al Horford – 26 – Beginning his prime
Lou Williams – 26 – Entering his prime
Devin Harris – 29, turns 30 during season – A little past his prime maybe. Came on strong the last two months last season.
Jeff Teague – 24 – Not quite in his prime. Look at what Lowery and Rondo did from age 24 to 26 – exploded.
ZaZa – 28 turns 29 – In his prime. Good job last year.
Anthony Morrow – 27 – In his prime
Ivan Johnson – 28 turns 29 April 10th – In his prime
Kyle Korver – 31 turns 32 in March – Past his prime. This is the first Hawks player of our top 9 that is past his prime.
John Jenkins – 21 turns 22 in March – Just starting out
DeShawn Stevenson – 31, turns 32 in April – Past his prime
Johan Petro – 26 turns 27 in January – Hopefully coming into his prime – he had some promising games last season.
We have so many guys entering their prime, or near it – that is one “X” Factor that gives me some optimism for the upcoming season.
We may fuse together pretty good.

Its really sad that we could not get more results from Al Horford. He, Marvin William and Jeff Teague are the worst underachievers that have held this team back. If we had Up Graded Al’s Position and Up graded Teague’s Position This team would have be a serious competitor. We will never be a serious competitor with Teague and Horford having any significant role on this team. Most of the horrible moves CLE made before and during the LeBron era were made by Jim Paxson, who now serves as a consultant to the Bulls, where is brother John Paxson is VP of Basketball Operations. Jim Paxson was Cavs GM from 1999 until April 2005. His tenure there was a commedy of errors as the Cavs recorded a 185-307 record.
1999: Andre Miller (8th); Trajan Langdon (11th)
2000: Jamal Crawford (8th) traded with cash to CHI for 7th pick Chris Mihm
2001: DeSagana Diop (8th); missed on Joe Johnson (10th)
2002: Dajuan Wagner (6th); missed on Amare Stoudamire (9th)
July 30th, 2002, CLE trades Andre Miller and Bryant Stith to LAC for Darius Miles and Harold Jamison. This was after a season in which Miller averaged 16.5 points and 10.8 assists.
2003: LeBron James
2004: Luke Jackson (10th); missed on Al Jefferson (15th), Josh Smith (17th). This would be the last lottery pick of the LeBron James era.
On June 27th, 2005, Danny Ferry was hired as GM by CLE.

NBA Trade Rumors – Dwight Howard to Atlanta Hawks?
July 26, 2012 05:55 PM EDT
Dwight Howard has been linked to a number of teams during this NBA off-season, but the closest to his heart is Atlanta, Howard’s hometown. The Hawks could use the publicity after making the playoffs the last few seasons, but making an early exit.
While teams like the LA Lakers and Houston Rockets have made a move to land the All-Star center, Orlando has balked at deals that could have landed them Andrew Bynum and a host of other young talented players; but dealing with the Hawks, the Magic could get a good group of players and draft picks and Howard could return to his home with a hero’s welcome.
The 26-year-old is the most dominating center in basketball and last season he averaged over 20 points and 14 rebounds per game. In his eight years in the NBA, his career numbers of 18 points, 13 rebounds, and two block shots are Hall of Fame numbers, but winning a title is a must on his résumé and Orlando lost that shot a couple of years back.
While the media market in Atlanta is not that of other big basketball cities, landing Howard would put the Hawks back into the limelight and create a huge buzz among their fans. While nothing official has happened, look for the Hawks to make a big push to land the 2004 top overall pick and create a media storm that the team hasn’t had since the likes of Dominique Wilkins.

Im more excited about this team then the previous 2. I believe in ferry and LD if he just learned how to substituent players better. His play calling and coaching style can be very efficient when he subs right. No Iso Joe to get bailed out by. He is going to really get better at it, but with more role player it should be easier to run plays and match up in some situations more effectively And next year I cant wait to see who we can acquire… CP3? Howard would be nice and be able to sign multi year deal but his attitude sucks and can destroy a ball club. Too many red flags with Howard? Why do you need CP3 when you have Harris, Teague, and Lou? All of whom are bigger, stronger, and play better D. Yeah CP3 gets you a few steals a game but I’ve seen him get lit up plenty of times by opposing PG’s (Teague on the other hand, Gave D-Will the business this past season)
Our team is built for transition speed and getting to the foul line in the half court. CP3 dominates the ball way too much to fit on our squad. Our offense would degenerate into a bunch of screens for CP3 and we would be very perdictable……thats IF LD changed his system to fit CP3 (which he wont) in our system yeat the PG brings the ball up, but after that everyone is passsing and moving (not a CP3 friendly offense).
Why does everyone wanna get rid of two guards (Teague/Harris) for an overrated PG with an extremely high usage rate (and questionable knees) who doesn’t fit? I don’t understand the hype.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnkt5NZgg6w
This roster + Dwight nets you a title without a doubt. No CP3 required. Besides, I doubt he’d wanna leave that nice clipper squad anyway (Besides the fact that we don’t need him)
Marvin is gone now folks. Let’s not live in the CP3/D-Will land of what-if’s and lets just move on…..please. We just fixed our mistake.

Perhaps if you put down the hater-ade, you’d notice that in his last full season (2010-2011) Horford was third among centers in double-doubles, one behind Al Jefferson, who was second.
BTW, Horford had 2 double-doubles in his 10 games he played this year, whereas Robin Lopez had ZERO in 64 games. So tell me exactly WHEN R. Lopez was / is a “double/double guy”?

The Cards won a World Series last season:
A – Because Tony LaRussa was an unbelievable manager – and I don’t like him – but he is what he is
B – Because they had a ton of guys 29-32 years old – in other words, alot of mediocre guys, who happened to be in their baseball prime.
I hope the Hawks can come close to replicating that.
I know this Hawks teams as constructed has some major holes with Defense and Size. But it still should be a fun team to watch.

SF – Morrow/Korver is going to give you somewhere around 20 a nite
PF – Josh/Ivan will give you more than 20+ a nite

really dude? better find some other comparison. With Marion at the 3, the Suns lineups are even bigger than the Hawks with Josh Smith at the 4. haha what a joke
Hawks had 6′10 Kurt Thomas/6′8 Boris Diaw, 6′10 Amare, and 6′8 Shawn Marion
Hawks have Morrow or Korver as the 3 and no Steve Nash. No wait we have a Nash type defensive liability in Lou Williams. Drew plays small and This is a recipe for disaster. But look what Ferry handed him. He has to play big or he’s gonna lose a lot of games.

And really the lineup, its not about the regular season games.
Its about setting yourself up for future runs in the playoffs. You’re not winning a title with a 31 -32 yo Korver as the 3. Josh Smith has won his chance to play there.
It’s time for the Hawks to admit to past mistakes. We don’t have Don Nelson, no Steve Nash. We admitted Marvin was not going to become the Durant type small ball player and that Joe was overpaid, etc.
Now we’re gonna get pissy about being undersized and playing Nellieball is wrong? YOu really want to try Josh in the Lebron PF role? Again?
Ok. But if you know anything he’s a Iguodala type, and even Lebron would not win with that lineup.
If I told you that you have to use this lineup exclusively:
Teague – Rondo
Lou Williams -
Kyle Korver
Lebron/Iguodala
Al Horford
Could that team get past the Celtics? No. But you remove Korver for a center (Dwight./Pachulia)
You get Dwight you win the title, you get Pachulia to start at least you beat the Celtics up and are better than them.
Teague – Rondo
Lou Williams – Bradley
Lebron/Iguodala vs Pierce
Al Horford vs Bass
Pachulia vs Garnett
I cannot take losing to the Celtics anymore because Larry Drew is bending us over the table and screwing the fans over with this Nellieball garbage.

s.a.s, I gotta agree, Horford Just aint cutting it. But its not because he is physically under size. The average height for a center in the NBA is 6′10″. Sautee and I go back and forth on this but Big Al is closer to 6′ 10 1/2″ 265,
When you look at most exceptional centers like Howard, Bynum, Jefferson, Moses Malone, and so on, they may struggle there first or second year and then Wham! they figure the s hit out, Put on muscle mass and take over the paint.
Not our Al. SMH, His attitude is so not into the position. He could careless. After five (5) years, Al is yet to do any thing at All. Al is a burst, hes peaked. He should have been traded with Marvin. Al brings back too much of what was wrong with the hawks core, Teague does to for that matter.

Well he did that for the playoff money, Al was the most rested man in the playoffs. All of the other guys were tired and worn down, wore out, after a full season plus playoffs. Al should have dominated and put up 35 or 40 point per night along with 15-20 rbs.. Maybe to you, but obviously NOT to the NBA head coaches. Here’s what I don’t understand:
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE agrees that there is a dearth of talent at the center position in the NBA. Therefore, whomever makes the All-Star team, and the All-NBA team at center behind D12 (East) and Bynum (West) will be suspect, from a talent standpoint. I think it’s pretty easy to agree upon that. But here’s the thing: SOMEBODY is going to be named the second center on the All-Star team in the East. By rule, the coaches MUST vote for a center not on their roster.
So if SOMEBODY is going to be named to the A-S team, why aren’t you (or ANY Hawks fan) glad that it’s one of our players? What would it say about Horford if he were NOT considered to be at least near the second best center in the conference? I’d much rather that he is in consideration.
It’s strange to me that anyone claiming to be a Hawks fan wouldn’t be happy that any Hawks player made the All-Star team. But some seem to be more bothered about it than happy for the team and what it says about them. Just my two cents.

agreed Slimjr. Al role should be what it should have always been. 12–17 boards, some block 2 or 3 shots, Alter a few shots, put a couple of people on their butts. Score on put backs strong, drawing fouls. Being a 4th or 5th option playoff off the pick and role since his offensive skill set is so limit.
Al’s problem is not knowing and accepting his role.
Sautee if Al had used the energy from resting the majority of the season against th tired old men called the Celtics, he could have taken 12-15 shot from low post play, Drew fouls and got 30pts without taking shots away from Josh or JJ

Now, T-s, you are contradicting yourself. You want Al to “know his role” and be a 4th or 5th option, but yet you say he should take 12-15 shots in the low post?

No matter how popular Al is to 1 or 2 coaches, Hes not that kind of talent. Id love to have Jefferson instead of Al. The problem I have is Im like Josh, I want to win a championship.
You can Al what you want, but its impossible for me to call him, 2nd or 3rd best. If he was, why did he let Amare punk him out and win the game against him? Isnt Al better than Amare by your standards?
You can keep your 1 or 2 coaches who added Al. The fans arent fooled and Al is never voted as the number 2 center. in the conference. More along the lines of 5th or 6th which would be about right.

No Sautee, you (as usual) are twisting what I am saying to confuse the issue. Last year or the year before Al did not understand or rather did not accept his role. I am hoping that he would have matured and as Slimjr says (I agree) accept his role THIS year as a 4th or 5th option and hit the boards play some D and help the team.

I respect that you feel differently, and that’s ok. I feel like Horford is certainly better than either Joel Anthony, or Kendrick Perkins, whose teams were in the Finals. Of course we don’t have a James or a Durant, but we DO have Josh.
Seriously, I’d LOVE to see what a good offensive coach could do with Al and Josh playing a high-low set. You just said yourself that Al was no worse than 5th or 6th in the conference, which means he competes well at that position with all but a few centers. Who in the league do you think we could REALISTICALLY get that is better than Al? Not pipe dreams. Real talk, who could we obtain?

Our team, as currently constructed, will not win ANY playoff series.
We are going into the season with LD on a 1 year, prove yourself, deal.
No way this roster is any better than last year’s roster. We have just rid ourselves of future debt.
I like Lou and Jenkins; I feel we were lucky to get Devin Harris with what Marvin does for us. Again, we saved future debt, whether Harris contributes or not.
I’m glad that a part-time Hinrich is gone. His stats as a Hawk are far from memorable.
Now we have to find guys who can score the ball. With a 1 year deal, LD isn’t giving Jenkins any significant minutes. He’s going vets all the way. Jenkins, like Teague, better learn patience.

Al NEVER averaged 30 ppg – so why would you expect him to start during the playoffs?
NEWS FLASH !!! THE ERA OF DOMINATE CENTERS IN THE NBA ARE OVER! Okay, we get D12 to replace Shaq, but there are very few complete centers… David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem, etc. are not walking on the court.
Now, centers are just specialist. You have shot blockers (JaVale McGee), rebound specialist (Joakim Noah), perimeter specialist (Matt Bonner), PF’s who are 7′0 forced to play center although they are clearly just tall (Kevin Garnett, Chris Bosh),or well rounded guys who are pretty good in a lot of areas but are certainly not going to the HOF (Andrew Bynum, Al Horford, Brooks Lopez, Marc Gasol, Al Jefferson).
About 80% of the centers that start in the NBA are just big bodies with really limited skill sets – they grab a couple of boards, score on put backs – but do not fill out the stat sheets (Spencer Hawes, Kendrick Perkins, Joel Anthony).
Then you have the projects… guys drafted but never get it (Hakeem Thabeet, Amir Johnson).
If you compare Al or others.- he is certainly a top 5 center! Also, his nimbers have improved every season (throw out last year 11 game sample size).

Funny how folks on here constantly dogg Horford, IMO, for no reason. Horford is a team 1st kind of player who saw fit to let the Opt 1 (JJ) and Opt 2 (Josh) guys shine while he basically played smart, doing what the defense gave him and others. He doesn’t force anything, passes well for a big guy and has a really nice 16-18 footer jumper. Is a 2-time AllStar while playing out of position. Horford basically had no real season this past season due to injury but still gave a heck of a effort in the last 2 playoff games.
After saying all of that, next season is the season for Horford to play up to his full potential! He will be entering the season being the 2nd Opt behind Josh and he knows it!! To take anything from his play during the Olympics is just foolish. Those games were the 1st real games he played after his months long injury while playing on a DOMINICAN REPUBLIC team of basically garbage players. NO ONE IS GOING TO GIVE THEIR ALL WHEN HE OR SHE KNOWS THE SQUAD THEY ARE PLAYING ON IS GARBAGE. Case-in-point, Dwight is by far the best player on the Magic’s team. When he finally realized his team was garbage and never gave it their all every night on the floor, he basically gave up!! The effort just wasn’t there due to no motivation from his teammates. That’s just human nature. You are not gonna bust yo butt for nothing. Now, not to compare Horford to Dwight but I was just making a point that Horford was on a garbage team and he really had nothing to prove trying to go up against the USA team or any team for that matter considering the fact that his team just wasnt good enough to go far in the Olympics.
So again, dont be surprise to see Horford put on a show for our Atlanta Hawks this season cause Dude will have something to prove and I just cant wait to see it up close and in person. There will be no Joe dribbling for days and Josh will now be able to relax and not force stupid shoots nor make dumb turn overs just to prove to the NBA world that he deserves to be an ALLSTAR or that he is a better player than Joe. Josh WILL be making quality shots and making smarter passes to Horford for very easy layups/ally’s. I do see both Josh AND Horford avg no less than 25pg/20pg respectfully. MARK MY WORDS!!

PGS – And as of right now, I’m not against us playing Big. We may do like we did in 2010-11, and play either big or small depending on the opposition. It really boils down do we start Morrow or ZaZa on a given nite.
And much of that depends on Morrow. If he’s working like a beast right now, good for him and the Hawks. He started out like a real good player last January – then really slowed down. I think I saw he averaged maybe 15 ppg last January – then cooled off. Injury? Fatigue with the compressed schedule? Didn’t care with the really bad team? Defenses began to key in on him once Lopez went down? Don’t know.
Big we play:
ZaZa/Petro
Al/Ivan
Josh/Korver
Lou/Morrow/Jenkins/Stevenson
Teague/Harris
stephen a smith – I’m not sure how we don’t average about 20 per nite at the C with Al/ZaZa playing there 48 minutes.
With JJ gone, Al will probably get more touch’s, and he averaged 15+ his last full season, even with JJ here. You can’t go by his 1st 10 games last season. He was working his way into BB shape after marriage…
And surely ZaZa will get us close to 5 ppg. So that’s right at 20 ppg.
And if you want to get into shooting %’s in the playoffs, and ya’ll know I’ve been defending Josh on here, but he averaged like 38.9% shooting in the playoffs.
The arguments work both ways.

Our D may be better starting ZaZa at C, but our Offense won’t be better probably.
ZaZa averaged like 8.2 ppg in 30.3 mpg as a starter last season.
Morrow averaged 12.0 ppg in about 27.6 mpg last season.
Morrow is probably a better offensive option than Korver as well. Not alot better, but some better.
But if we can get that Korver that averaged 53.5% or so from 3 a few years ago with the Jazz – I’ll take that guy coming off the bench.

But Josh, on a bum knee, will his way to those stats against the Celtics no less – and the silence is deafening.

It amazes me sometimes that some people think Horford is some type of d-league player but expect him to play as if he is on the level of a D Howard. Horford is what he is as I have stated many times, he is a 3rd or 4th option on offense but that is ok. He is a Buck Williams/Horace Grant type of player. Anyone expecting him to be a 2nd option on offense is kidding themselves. This Hawks team as currently constituted will be the result of the sum is greater than the parts.
I see people tout Brook Lopez as being vastly superior to Horford and I dont see it. Lopez probably a better scorer but Horford I think better overall rebounder even if Lopez has had some down years rebounding.
Also, slimjr, as an FYI, week ago u stated Starks won game 6 in MSG in the FInals against the Rockets. That is not true they lost game 6 in Houston and lost the series in 7 games even though Starks had a good game 6.
Also, the comment you made about Horford getting more rebounds and playing less of an offensive role is the only positive thing you have ever said about Horford

HS – I also looked up Lopez’s numbers, and saw he averaged over 8 boards a game his 1st couple of seasons – then his last full season – 5.9!
And he was only averaging 3.5 rebounds per game before he was injured in 5 games last season.
And thanks for making my point about Josh and Lamarcus – He averages 19.8, 7.0, and 1.6 – and he’s great.
Josh goes for 16.8, 13.6, and 4.8 and he’s chopped liver nationally, and even on this blog sometimes.
Slim – I hear what your saying – but that’s really difficult to tell how LaMarcus would do in the East. I guess one could get the stats from somewhere about his stats vs. Eastern Conference teams – but not this cowboy – life’s too short.

LaMarcus vs. Garnett, Bosh, Josh, Taj Gibson/Boozer, Amare, David West, etc. on a nightly basis may not be the easiest proposition however. Even some of the poor defenders are good on O, and he’d have to defend them.
And Aldredge is a terrible 3 pt shooter, doesn’t block shots, doesn’t get steals, doesn’t get assists, is not that good of a rebounder – but he’s better than Josh? I’m not buying it.

Aldridge is seen as a throwback, a natural post player. Josh is a better wing player, and moves his feet better on defense.

Guys – forget Al as the 2nd option being a non-starter – Josh as a 1st option ain’t good either. And ya’ll know I defend Josh, but just sayin’.
But I think Danny is right: Our floor spacing will be incredible with Morrow, Lou, Korver, Jenkins on the wings and with Teague and Harris getting to the rim at will. It will create (or should) some easy buckets. Josh and Al should feast.

“You just said yourself that Al was no worse than 5th or 6th in the conference, which means he competes well at that position with all but a few centers. Who in the league do you think we could REALISTICALLY get that is better than Al? Not pipe dreams. Real talk, who could we obtain?” -Sautee
First lets clear up the misconception with your argument. Being 5th 6th or 7th best center in your conference is not going to get you past the second round.
Now to help your argument I took Al’s best 1 year to help him, because if I take his over all performance during his five year career, Al leaves me shaking my head. With out singling out his 1 best year Al would easily fit in the bottom 45% of the conference and bottom 35% of the NBA. So to help poor Al, I took His 1 productive year. which again is misleading because that’s not a good measure of what he does night in night out. All players have good games and bad games, good seasons and bad season. You have to measure their impact by the total of their career. If that is the standard then I would rather have Al coming off the bench than starting.
Stats here’s are from his one (1) decent year.
From an offensive stand point, Al is ranked by NBA.com as #4 amongst eastern teams and #5 if you include the west.
Lets look at what Al brings to the table defensively. We certainly want our center’s ability to block and ALTER shots while denying the paint and the rim. That’s what centers do and what the position was designed for. This more than other things measure the quality of your center’s impact.
In that critical area (blocks) Al ranks # 11 which is very close to the bottom when you consider there are 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. He falls to #22 when you look at the NBA as a whole, which means in the key area of protecting the rim by blocks, alters, denying a path to the basket Al is amongst the bottom 20% in our conference and the bottom 25% in the NBA
Ok lets go to Al’s strongest point, Double Double (rebounds and points) where he ranked 2nd in the conference amongst centers (I went to 2010-11). There were 6 centers whose numbers were logically equal to Al’s but the actual arrangements Al’s was was listed 2nd. This is probably the most insignificant and misleading of all the stats. I say this because:
a) 10/10 is a double double but it doesn’t mean you did any serious damage.
b) rebounds often happen when some one else plays the defense and you wait for the rebound
c) there are 21 players in the east conference alone who have put up more than 21 games of DD’s
So Al who’s career average is 12pts and 8 rebs (nearly a DD) is a marginal double double.
So here’s my summary:
Al’s very best is only 20% of what his career performance is, in other words Al is at his very best 20% of the time (1 decent year out of 5) No excuses, it is what it is.
Al will live near the double double but that’s closer to 10/10. In addition there are well over 50 players in the NBA who have posted more than 10 games of double double. Meaning this is not a very difficult to reach stat.
Most importantly, defensively, even in Al’s one (1) good year, he was amongst the bottom 20% of centers. Completely non serviceable protecting the rim. And that was his best year. SMH.
So in conclusion. 20% of the time Al is a decent scorer, the other 80% of the time hes a non performer or is injured (still non performing). 100% of the time he is a very inadequate defender in the paint. That is the testimony of Al’s career as a hawk. You can call it All star/All NBA if you like.
I call it Awful and gone fishing after round 2. because you will never ever never get past the second round with Al defending your rim. Never with Al on your front line as a starter. It taint going to happen.
Luke warm offensively and none existing defensively. When you talk about being a complete force at the 5 spot Al would move down to 15 or 16 NBA or 7th 8th conference making him an average Joe and not a top center.
Time to trade Al

15 NBA Eastern Conference Teams [divided into quintile(s) or fifths]
1 – 3 – 1st Quintile – 1% – 20%
4 – 6 – 2nd Quintile – 21% – 40%
7 – 9 – 3rd Quintile – 41% – 60%
10 – 12 – 4th Quintile – 61% – 80%
13 – 15 – 5th Quintile – 81% – 100%
If Al Horford ranked #11 in blocks [either overall or amongst centers] in the Eastern Conference, then he [Horford] is not in the bottom 20%. The “Blocked Shots” statistic is a stat usually led by centers and forwards. If we were to assume that there are a total of 45 starting centers [15] and forwards [30] in the Eastern Conference with Al Horford being ranked #11 in blocked shots, then Horford would be in the top third [1 - 15] and top quarter [1 - 11.25] in blocked shots in the Eastern Conference.
30 Total NBA Teams [divided into quartile(s) or fourths]
1 – 7.5 – 1st Quartile – 1% – 25%
7.6 – 15 – 2nd Quartile – 26% – 50%
16 – 22.5 – 3rd Quartile – 51% – 75%
22.6 – 30 – 4th Quartile – 76% – 100%
If Al Horford ranked #22 in blocked shots in the NBA, then Horford would not [technically] be in the bottom 25% in the NBA. If we were, again, to assume that there are 90 starting centers [30] and forwards [60] in the NBA with Horford being ranked #22 in blocked shots, then Horford would be in the top third [1 - 30] and top quarter [1 - 22.5] in blocked shots in the NBA.
For the record (FTR), Al Horford’s NBA career regular season averages for points and rebounds are 12.8ppg and 9.5rpg, respectively, while shooting 53.7% from the field and 76.1% from the free throw line. Please note Al Horford has averaged at least 9.3rpg during the regular season in his first four years [2007-2011] in the NBA.

But – less than a dozen centers in the NBA will do better – so if I have a top 5 center – is he truly a loser or Kendrick Perkins, Joel Anthony etc? I can’t stomach Jason Collins (Boston) or ZaZa (brick hands) in our starting lineup!
Also, the 7 to’s in the playoffs – Al was clearly very rusty! I did watch him have a monster 4th quarter to atone for those turnovers.

I know Horford is a 2nd option on this team and has to be that way my point being is in an ideal situation he is not Doesnt make him a bad player I like Horford as a player. I think Smith is a 2nd option at best in an ideal situation but will play on this team as the first option.
SteveW, you have made some excellent points in regards to the team and I agree with them.
I think this team as constructed will get anywhere as high as a 5seed and as low as an 8. Good thing about this team is that there should be some good spacing to get the perimeter guys good shots. Definetely need a SF and I would take Iggy if he can be had for very little the Hawks give up.
I am also curious to see how the fanbase will react to showing up to the Phillips arena for this seasons team. I plan on going to some games when I am in the area visiting some family.

Perkins is not a bottom tier C, he was, however, a fish out of the water against MIA, who now is playing a style of small ball which is unique and only possible when you have Lebron as your low post point power forward, Wade on the wings and a very effective Bosh from the elbow making a mini-Garnett impersonation.

Truthfully, Teague needs to be the second option to Josh, not Al. Being one of the top 2 options has to include the ability to consistently create your own shot. Teague/Al pick and roll may be one of the most used plays, but Al is still a third option at best (depending on Harris’ or William’s play). When teams start sending double teams to Al or making him a focal point of stopping, his lack of ability to create will magnify significantly.

MsDee,
Lets not try to make something out of Horford which can’t be.
Horford is a deadly midrange shooter when he has space and time to shoot, has a semi-dependable running hook-shot when driving from the left block, uses his mobility well to get rebounding position on both ends, has very good hands and passes well, can run the fast break, has good dribble for a C, is a very disciplined defender who will not let you down with defensive brain f@rts.
But:
He can’t create his shot. When he gets the rock in one on one situations he jab steps for 5 seconds before he makes a move.
Has been progressively losing his warrior mentality and lacks some length and athleticism to be an above average rim defender, however, he is not the free pass that many describe him to be.
A solid and versatile defender is the best possible description for him.
In summary:
Horford is a fine player if he can find his dog but he is not nor will ever be an All Star PF in the true sense of the expression.
I am confident that he can be a solid 15/10 player for the rest of his career as an undersized C but if he does not get his mind straight into being that whilst being a true warrior down low, I say trade him while his stock is high if the pieces we can get him fit our need.

“Has been progressively losing his warrior mentality and lacks some length and athleticism to be an above average rim defender, however, he is not the free pass that many describe him to be.”
Vava, this is a fair and balanced description of All-NBA. What people are failing to realize is that the roster is being constructed to play to Al and Josh’s strengths. Ferry told Jeff Schultz that, for the first time in modern Hawks history, the Hawks will be running the pick-and-roll:
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2012/07/25/hawks-ferry-doesnt-see-josh-smith-going-anywhere/?cxntfid=blogs_jeff_schultz_blog
With all the shooters to space the floor, Horford will get plenty of looks in isolation in the post. If he can’t beat his man, he has well above average passing skills for his position and can hit a shooter or a cutter. Keep in mind, Horford will spend much of this season being guarded by the opposing team’s second-best post defender. The opposition’s best post defender will be guarding Josh, a proven low-post scorer.
We will see a lot of two-man game with Al rolling to the basket or picking and popping. Teams will not be able to collapse into the lane the way the did last year against Memphis, which had two legitimate post threats but no knock-down shooters. This will create a lot of isolation in the post for Al and Josh and also create driving lanes for a squad loaded with guys who can attack the basket off the dribble.

so, if folks would not try to read an all star is a superstar, things would be right. all star al does his work, toils well and gets paid well but he isnt overpaid by market standards. he isnt nor pretend to be a superstar and that is one of the special things about him that seems to go over the superficial folks here.
anyway, there is a huge difference in all star and superstar. in atlanta we probably have had too few encounters with superstars and the last encounter ended terribly bad. a lot of baggage left over on that one. al isnt an all star and he has appropriately acted out who he is. josh is as close as it gets to a superstar though not an all star. guess it goes both ways.
again, all stars are one thing, superstars another. simple stuff. we may only have two of one and i hope we see them in tandem this year at an all star game. we have none of the other. i can only hope those two continue to work so well with each other in spite of their detractors here trying to say there should be a rivalry or decision made on them. we need them both to play at their highest level or there will be misery here in loserville once again. my wish is maybe real hawks fans ought to get behind both of them.

Yes, I actually should have said that Al has the tools to be a very effective pick n roll (due to his excellent mobility) and pick n pop player (due to his midrange game), which is something I missed on my assessment.
However, that will not make him a Karl Malone.

compare him for dollar value and he ranks high. in the new nba that counts a huge amount. dollar for dollar who does he underperform against as a center or pf? not many 12 mil all stars out there are there? there are a lot of 15 mil and up players not all stars.

No way, i thought ivey was done for but there seems to be a want for defensive PGs and he’s always been that.
I watched the China vs Spain game and it was awesome, Spain has the size and shooters to be able to beat team USA. China’s Yi Jianlin looked great and they had a quick backup PG that came in and played fearless, international ball is so fun to watch, I just wish they didnt allow you to sleep in the lane on Defense.

“Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel: Disgruntled superstar Dwight Howard told Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan and assistant general manager Scott Perry during a face-to-face meeting in southern California on Wednesday that he still wants to be traded and that he will not sign another contract with the team, a source familiar with the discussion told the Orlando Sentinel. Hennigan and Perry did not explicitly try to convince Howard to drop his trade request, the source said. Instead, the Magic officials said they wanted to build a relationship with Howard since they are new to the Magic organization. Howard responded by saying he has no interest in building a relationship with them because he does not want to begin the season in Orlando. … Howard’s agent, Dan Fegan, and Howard’s manager, Kevin Samples, also attended Wednesday’s meeting, which ended with handshakes.”
So Dwight wants out of Orlando before the season starts. If Orlando honors his wishes then it limits Dwight’s options for who can get him. What does this do for the Hawks chances?

This whole situation is annoying and its making everyone dislike dwight more and more daily. It seem a deal needs to be done before the season starts or dwight wont play for ORL during the regular season. If they trade dwight before the season he will end up a Laker and that team will be the greatest time I have ever seen(even better than late 90’s Bulls) with Nash running thing,s Kobe being clutch, Metta playing crazy D, Pau destroying down-low, and Dwight owning the paint. LAL would sweept MIA in the finals.
If somehow ORL keeps dwight, we(ATL) need to trade AL and devin harris & a 1st to ORL and let dwight be a rental for a year. We could make the ECF with Dwight and if he leaves after the season so what. Id rather have Dwight for a half a year and give up AL and have a chance at going to the finals rather than being a possible second round team with AL and cap room and NO chance at going to the finals.

“I’ll be impressed when he stops whining about playing the 5 and developes a reliable post game.” – I MUS WRITE
I MUS, while I agree that he BADLY needs to improve his post game, I’ll challenge you on the whining accusation. Show me one quote where he is “whining about playing center”, and I’ll give in. But I don’t think you’ll find one.
Most of what you will find is like this from an earlier MC blog:
“Sund said the focus would getting bigs for the last three roster spots. That’s good news to Al, who thinks the Hawks definitely need to acquire a bona fide center.”
“We need to get another big guy, another center, that’s able to help myself and Josh out,” he said. “We need to have someone to come in and have an impact. I think that is the position we need if we want to be any type of contender in the East.”
“Al said he doesn’t necessarily mean getting a center to supplant him as the starter so he can move to power forward. Rather, it could be a scenario where the new center plays a lot of minutes and L.D. can mix and match from among the new guy, Al, Josh, Zaza and any other big guys Sund adds (a Jason Collins return is a possibility if he gets in better shape).”
“I don’t have a problem splitting time [at center],” Al said. “I played a little four last year with Zaza in the game at the same time and I thought that was good. I know I am going to still play the five.”
He said he’s fine with that (it seems odd that an All-Star has to say that). He said he knows some fans and media seem to be more concerned about his position than him. But the way he sees it the Hawks have to play to their strengths, which includes a lineup with him at center.
“I think we create a lot of problems when have an athletic lineup with Josh at the four, me at the five and Marvin at the three,” Al said. “I think we create serious problems for people. I think that is one of our strengths as a team is we are so versatile.”
—————————————————————————————————————————
Now did that sound like he was “whining” about playing center? Nope.
Like I said, if you can find a quote where he’s whining about playing center, let us in on it, please. Otherwise don’t accuse him without proof.

Nobody here is predicting a hall of fame career for All-NBA. But he did light the Celtics up in the 4th quarters of the games he played. Was this because of the attention Joe and Josh drew? Most assuredly, and Josh will continue to draw that attention. Joe is gone but do you think anybody’s gonna leave Morrow, Harris or Williams to go double Al?

“Has anyone noticed that the above doesn’t match LD’s princetonian offense?”
I’m gonna have a post soon at rep ATL dot com about what I suspect regarding Ferry’s many comments about how the Hawks are going to play.
“So Dwight wants out of Orlando before the season starts. If Orlando honors his wishes then it limits Dwight’s options for who can get him. What does this do for the Hawks chances?”
It all depends on what Andrew Bynum wants to do. If he wants to stay a Laker, all he has to do is have his agent let Houston and Cleveland know that he won’t extend with them and nobody is going to trade assets for him. If he’s cool with going to Cleveland and Hennigan thinks that Varejao and picks is a good deal, Bynum will be teaming up with Uncle Drew.
I really don’t see Cleveland having that much to offer. Houston, on the other hand, is well stocked with picks. However, it’s doubtful that either Howard or Bynum would commit to play there beyond the final season on their contracts. Houston isn’t going to give up picks and prospects if they don’t think they can retain the player they receive in a deal.
That’s why the Hawks are in prime position, because of Al Horford’s contract. Horford is signed long-term to a below-market deal. He’s a perfect building block because he’s not on a max contract but gives All-Star production. A team like Houston could trade picks and prospects to Orlando (which is what Hennigan wants, to build his own team up from the ground) while recevinging Al Horford from the Hawks while Dwight goes to Atlanta. Houston wouldn’t have to worry about retaining Horford: He’s under contract for the next 4 seasons at a very reasonable $12m per season.
Horford would also be a good fit in the front court with Asik. Horford is not thought of on this blog as an elite defensive player, but defense is Asik’s primary skill. Asik will carry more of the defensive burden while Horford gets most of the touches on offense for the front court. As we mentioned earlier, Horford’s potential in the pick and roll and pick and pop is excellent if the offense is structured that way. Lin thrives in the pick and roll and would complement Horford perfectly.

I see Schortsanitis as more of a trade asset (Dwight bait maybe) than a likely addition to the Hawks in the near future, but either way, it’s good to see Ferry get something in return for a guy who wasn’t going to get playing time behind Morrow and Jenkins if he returned. And we have already seen that he is willing to use trade exceptions unlike the previous regime.

Baby Shaq probably wouldn;t make enough money in the NBA to justify a Euro leaue buyout (assuming he has one) and certainly wouldn’t be worth losing even a million in cap space for a long-term contract. His value as a player is likely akin to that of Cenk Akyol.
