Updated: Hawks acquire Korver

Vivlamore filling in for M.C.

Kyle Korver is the latest shooter being stockpiled on an ever-changing Hawks’ roster.

A trade for Korver, a guard known for his 3-point shooting, was completed Monday. The Hawks  acquired the veteran from the Bulls for cash considerations.

“I appreciate the toughness and the competitive energy Kyle brings to the game every night, and we’re very excited to add

him to our team.” Danny Ferry, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/GM, said in a statement released by the team.  “Adding him makes shooting an even greater strength for our club.”

The deal was several days in the making. Korver was in Atlanta for a physical on Saturday.

Korver was owed a $500,000 guarantee of his $5 million non-guaranteed salary for 2012-13 by the Bulls by Sunday.

“We led the NBA in wins two years in a row, and (I) loved the personalities and chemistry we had,” Korver told the Chicago Tribune Friday when news of the potential trade first surfaced. “The bond we had was unique. You always feel you could’ve done more, but everybody on our team gave it all we had and there’s at least some satisfaction in that.”

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. He was 10th in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .435 (118-for-271).

The Hawks have added shooters Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and first-round pick John Jenkins during the offseason.

Korver, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

“Jermaine was as important to the Celts last year as Tree Rollins was for the Hawks. Zero, nada. His absence was for them a plus, not a minus.

On the contrary, Zaza was our work horse and his absence was a huge blow.

Clear advantage for the Hawks in the importance of the loss of man power.”

YOu do realize that Jermaine O’neal is considered to be a better player than Zaza in most NBA circles. Injuries aside, Jemaine O’Neal is a better center than Zaza.

Random thoughts:

Ferry ain`t gonna trade *assets for D.Howard.
*[major team components such as Al or Teague]
He will have cap space to sign him; [2013]
many people think he ends up in Atl *’`next yr`’* !

Teaguer may not be a Hawk [long term].
I`m reading into Ferry`s statements:
He talks much about the ability of Harris and Lou Will.
I`m guessing – of course.

Summer Team:
Mike Scott is a Gamer.
Korver is here to mentor *’`Jenkins`’*
Benson makes the team immediate upgrade over Collins / Damp
Jordan Taylor from Wisconsin may be a keeper [defense]
Jordan Williams [acq from Brklyn Nets] is on smmr team / has-NPCD
*[I think he got in 1 min in one game, committed 1 foul / only stat]

*** If we have a true [5] *** along with Al & Josh:
Josh should destroy a wing [3] in the post !
Much like Melo – who is a very good post-up [3].

If Bobcats drop Dasagna Diop (current rumor), he would be a good guy to try and sign as the designated big body to defend the handful of low-post power players in the league. Dude is MASSIVE.

SMH … Dallas Cowboy’s WR, Dez Bryant turned himself in today for domestic violence. Allegedly, that dude smacked his mamma in the face with his baseball cap … ouch! And, jacked her up by her shirt on Saturday night.

Calm down Dez man, didn’t your mamma teach you not to put your hands on a woman? How does one explain this behavior? Not enough hugs as a kid?

Regarding your D12 link, I think this blogger said it best:

NBAguy119: “Can someone explain to me why Orlando would be excited about Net’s draft picks which I assume would be late rounders in a poor draft??”

By mid Jan, I would expect the Nets (with their studded Lay-up) to be among the top 4 teams in the east before this trade. With D12 after this trade, they could become the 2nd best team in the east by season end.

If Orlando got picks from the Nets from this trade, it won’t amount to much compared to Houston who will suck this season. The Hawks are likely the next best option considering how they are re-tooling.

The Truth, I’m not sure if all of the picks the Nets are trading are their picks (or picks acquired from other teams). The main thing the Nets are offering is a ton of cap space… the Magic can pretty much wipe all of their debts off the books while still obtaining 2 quality bigs (Lopez & Humphries).

If I’m guessing, Houston has better picks than any team competing for D12. Regarding cap and depending on the outcome of the Lin and Asik sweepstakes, Houston could easily beat the Nets.

The Nets have assembled talent that will likely be excluded from any Orlando offer (Deron, JJ etc.) compared to Houston who will give away anything.

The Truth, I agree, Houston likely has better picks (plus they have Toronto’s unprotected pick) and Orlando likely prefers to trade D12 out of the conference. Orlando has to choose between better draft picks + salary relief or better NBA-ready players (Lopez & Humphries) + salary relief.

I think Houston’s picks include:

1) A top-20 protected pick from Dallas (unprotected in 2017, I think).

2) Toronto’s pick which is structured so that it falls between 4-14 in the next 4 or 5 drafts. Pretty detailed restrictions. A lottery pick, but not a top 2 or 3 pick.

3) Their own pick which is lottery protected from the Hawks. I’m not sure what this does to their ability to trade the pick if it were to be a lottery pick. Trading it (from the lottery) would make them unable to trade their next year’s pick to Atlanta.

“Horford has become easy to defend simply because he has not developed any sort of post game. I don’t think that he is a bad player, I just know that NBA teams, scouts and other players have figured out how to shut him down. ” – Rod from CP

Wasn’t Boston the league’s best defense this year? In Games 5 and 6 Horford was 14-24 from the field. If the best defensive team in the league has “figured out how to shut him down”, how did he shoot so well? Wasn’t he guarded by Brandon Bass, whom everyone claimed had “shut Al down” in the Orlando series in ‘11?

With that said:

I was supremely disappointed with Al in the 2011 playoffs, but I never thought that he was defended so well that he was “shut down”. If anything, he shut himself down. I saw him getting the same midrange shot, and getting it off easily, but missing an inordinate amount of shots he hit all season. I never saw all these “hard close outs” that I saw people claiming. I went back and looked at the games I had recorded, and sure enough, Al was just missing shots that he had hit all year. I don’t know if it was nerves, but it surely was NOT great defense that caused him to “hurry his shot” as one poster said repeatedly.

Not that Chicago didn’t play great team defense against the Hawks, but the main thing they did to Al was not leave him alone, as Orlando mostly did. The Bulls definitely did a better job closing out because they never left him for long. But I thought he was rushing his shot, even when wide open. That’s what I saw when I went back to the tapes. To me, that’s a mental thing, and NOT “great defense”. He was just truly awful for the 2011 playoffs. It happens. I want to see what he can do next year.

Kover is a good player, but we are stored you escort them. I suppose that Ferry will want to play with high eaves (Josh Smith or wished Anthony Randolph) and curve – guards in the positions of base and escort. If we bring Randolph it is a good idea. I would like asking why Character is not playing almost anything in the summer league. I do not believe that it is much worse than Scott, I would like seeing him, because of the seen in Las Vegas only Benson can be part of the final roster of centers. This one Benson has a big facility for the attack. I repeat it once más:Jenkins he is a very special player, a gunboat. On the other hand we must reduce the escorts payroll cutting Stevenson, these days one is speaking about Dolphin, preferable it is to Stevenson, and it can play of eave. I like Wanamaker. And Shurna looks like to me an unfortunate poor person.

you actually don’t follow NBA basketball if you don’t see the value in having a guy like Korver on the roster. Korver has shot 41.3% from the 3 pt. line over his career, which is better than Ray Allen, who is also going to his 4th team. And for those of you who say that he doesn’t play defense, he averages 1 steal and about 1/2 block per 36 minutes over his career . He also shoots 87.7% from the free throw line.

if i were GM DF i would just let everything take its course regarding dwight, if he gets traded elsewhere hes traded, but when the deadline is approaching and nothing sounds appetizing to the magic (brooklyn bad picks/lopez and hou has just picks) all we gotta do is dangle devin harris and horford for dwight(maybe one 1st rd not both) and orlando will have their hand forced to take that, likely.
dwight has lost value greatly, ya hes the best C in the league but honestly i dont want a player who thinks he’s better than the coach (he is better than LD) and the GM, complaining giving half-butt effort for a year. id be happy we got a rental star and like to see him and josh with teague and lou w/shooters galore cuz thatd be entertaining but trading for dwight during this offseason doesnt seem in our best interest moving forward.

PG Teague/Harris/Lou Will
SG Lou Will/Jenkis/Morrow/Stevenson
SF Smith/Korver/Stevenson/Morrow
PF Horford/Johnson/ Smith
C Pahulia/Horford/Petro

That is our 12 for now id think. if we go teague lou will jsmooth horford zaza, that is a solid starting lineup and with devin harris and shooters off the bench that is a good combo. ivan gives some minutes to our bigs and for now petro will give mins here and there at 5. i still like keith benson so i hope he makes the 15 and could eventually make 12 over petro. stevenson can be our gritty defender and i think anthony randolphs versatility could really benefit us at the 3 4 and 5 at times.

12-man active roster:

Ball handlers: Teague, Harris, Williams
Shooters: Jenkins, Morrow, Korver
Forwards: Smith, Ivan, ???
Centers: Horford, Pachulia, ???

I don’t want Stevenson, Petro, or Jordan Williams on this roster. What kind of SF or C can we get for $6.5M in expiring contracts?

Hawks need some legit size in those last two active spots.

I’d like for the 3 inactive roster spots (13-15) to be Jordan Taylor, Mike Scott & Keith Benson.

Buddy, you’re right, the Humphries contract is 2 years. So according to Hollinger, the Nets could trade Humphries (who would have roughly 1.5 years left at the deadline) for Big Baby, JRich, Hedo, etc. and give Orlando cap space in the summer of 2014. Houston, could give them cap space in the summer of 2013. But Nets also give them Lopez & Humphries, while Houston doesn’t really have an above average player to deal.

JJ, I like Stevenson and I know Rod doesn’t like him either, but he can help us as a defender. We need some toughness in our lineup to go against the Heat and Bulls.
My 1st thought is he is going to start and give way to LouWill when we need offense. I don’t have a lot of faith in LD finding regular minutes for JJ, but we’ll watch and wait.
I don’t have Korver in any rotation, but he and Morrow are going to have to do more than just score to get minutes IMO.

We still need help with Zaza (how’s his health today?) and we need to get a guy at the 3 who can give us buckets. The problem is it might not be a cheap resolution here.

Last week, it looked like Dallas could very well be the favorite to land free agent forward Anthony Randolph, but the Mavericks have since added Elton Brand and no longer appear to be an option.

So who does that leave? Two favorites: the Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks have reportedly coveted Randolph all summer, but Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports tweeted over the weekend that the 23-year-old sat with Nuggets’ brass at a recent Summer League game in Las Vegas.

As for a darkhorse, look out for Golden State, the team that selected him No. 14 overall in 2008. The Warriors still don’t have a backup power forward with the size or experience of Randolph, and could very well be priced out for Carl Landry. Randolph could be a nice fall-back option.

Throw Lou Williams in that group as well.

D and Rebounding win BB Championships, but you still have to score pts.
