Updated: Hawks acquire Korver

Vivlamore filling in for M.C.

Kyle Korver is the latest shooter being stockpiled on an ever-changing Hawks’ roster.

A trade for Korver, a guard known for his 3-point shooting, was completed Monday. The Hawks  acquired the veteran from the Bulls for cash considerations.

“I appreciate the toughness and the competitive energy Kyle brings to the game every night, and we’re very excited to add

him to our team.” Danny Ferry, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/GM, said in a statement released by the team.  “Adding him makes shooting an even greater strength for our club.”

The deal was several days in the making. Korver was in Atlanta for a physical on Saturday.

Korver was owed a $500,000 guarantee of his $5 million non-guaranteed salary for 2012-13 by the Bulls by Sunday.

“We led the NBA in wins two years in a row, and (I) loved the personalities and chemistry we had,” Korver told the Chicago Tribune Friday when news of the potential trade first surfaced. “The bond we had was unique. You always feel you could’ve done more, but everybody on our team gave it all we had and there’s at least some satisfaction in that.”

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. He was 10th in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .435 (118-for-271).

The Hawks have added shooters Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and first-round pick John Jenkins during the offseason.

Korver, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

Howard probably wont sign with the team he gets traded too. Hawks should just wait it out and try and sign him.

It’ll be easier for the Hawks to become a true contender if guys like Josh Smith aren’t main cogs. Therefore, he should be traded in the final year of his deal to acquire assets that could be moved for a superstar-level talent. That is all.

Josh Smith is a good main cog. The problem is him being the pressure release.

He’s more Lebron or Iguodala (big wing and passer) than Bosh or Elton Brand. Put Horford at the PF and let the Hawks break some necks.

This is what you do when your grabbing for straws. Knockdown shooter. Yeah all 8.1 pts.That’ ain’t going to far. Who can he guard in the NBA? It’ll take the 3 new guys just to average the points Joe Johnson was bringing to the table. A whole bunch of movement. Back to the drawing board before the Hawks were even contenders. Might as well break up the team and start this mess all over again. If you want to win games? This isn’t the way to get it done.

Josh Smith had his best year as a pro basketball player this past season. Why? Al Horford was injuried and Josh had to play PF most of the time. Josh IS NOT a SF. All of you people that want to move Al to PF are just moving your best player out of position! Trade Al or keep him at 5. JOSH is a PF.

Howard would be out of his mind to even think to come to the hawks at this point. He’d be right back in the middle of a rebuilding franchise and probably 5 years away from even starting to look like a contender. I feel sorry for the season ticket holders.

I think it’s funny how people make assumptions about a team before one game! Heck even one practice!!! A team on paper means nothing! If teams were judged on paper, the Knicks would be the best team in the NBA! The last time I checked, teams win by working together. Give this year’s team a chance before calling them terrible…

Josh Smith’s best year was in 2010.

The only other time Josh played SF was when he was 18-21 years old. Pretty weak ass argument to say he had his best year as a PF.

When the Hawks lost in the 1st round at that.

And most SFs are so big they can play PF as well. Durant, Josh, Lebron, Granger, Pierce, Anthony.

If Dwight Howard comes here the best team has Josh playing the 3 anyways.

Josh, Al, Dwight

Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Could The Center Sit Out Season If Not Dealt? Lakers, Rockets, Hawks Still in Running

Dwight Howard is determined to get out of Orlando by any means necessary.

The Hawks have also been targeting Howard, hoping to bring the center back to his hometown. Atlanta would send Al Horford and Jeff Teague to Orlando in a potential deal. The Hawks might be reluctant to make such a deal without a commitment from Howard, but they’re hopeful that his friend Josh Smith could convince him to stay in Atlanta.

It’s hard to visualize Howard not playing this season if Orlando can’t move him. NBA Commissioner David Stern would almost certainly step in, and possibly suspend him without pay.

Howard has not publicly responded to the report.

Hoops you are being A) ignorant or B) an ingrate or possibly C) both, an ignorant ingrate.

How many years does Josh Smith have to prove himself before so-called Hawks fans stop doubting his versatility? He’s a damn near superstar when he’s a wing. The mismatches him and his teams create with him vs SGs and SFs is incredible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG7smUGa8h0

Or should I post the games where the Hawks won and lost to the Knicks solely based on Josh guarding Carmelo (both played PF). Knicks sucked on rebounding, Anthony rebounded and didnt give it to a guard, and turned it over a bit trying to be point-forward, etc.
Even Carmelo has the same flaws as a PF.

Stoudemire came back a few games and had like 12points but the Knicks won because they had 3 big men on the front line. The extra big man helps/.

Josh is a top 4 power forward

Al aint even top 15 so the best team is Howard and Josh in the front court and Al off the bench. But the reality is Al would be homeless on that team because he cant play the 4 better than Josh and he cant play the 5 better than D12. and he cant play the 3 at all. So Al is gone dude. That’s how ignorant you sound. The Heat won with Lebron at PF to open the floor up so he can drive and kick to 3s.
Larry Drew needs to be open to Josh Smith playing the 3.

Josh is the #1 rebound SF, the #1 shotblocking SF in the NBA. So take your “top 4″ PF and all his stats accumulated by essentially playing a bunch of minutes (like Joe used to) shove it.

Because what has Josh to show for it? A PF has to be able to match up with Cs as well throughout the game.

Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Dejuan Blair, Taj Gibson and Anthony “0 games of NBA experience” Davis got to play with or against the Olympians this year, Lamarcus was on the roster before another in-season injury.

And Josh is at home being a “top 4″ PF.

About positions and such. (again)

I was not exactly certain as to your point about LeBron @ 12:53 am.

You were aware that LeBron played mostly the [4] last season;
especially during the playoffs and most people attributed his
Post-Play with the reason Miami was Uber successful last season.

LBJ is a unique talent that could play the [1] through the [5]
-and-
be the best player in the league at [whatever] position he chose to play.

Last summer I made a statement;
that if I were coaching LBJ – I would play him in the post;
primarily the High Post.
I was roasted on this here blog for making such an assertion.

Just sayin`.

Najeh I think Deron Williams drawing doubles will make him make quicker decisions. The question is how quickly will he adjust to playing off ball. He will be able (or trust his pg to allow him) to roam and hunt for his shots off ball for the first time in a long time.

Now back to the Boston fan clowning Josh Smith and trying to make it an Al vs Josh battle (as if I didn’t write epic tomes on Horford’s flaws)…

ATL fans should just think about this.

If you’re Coach K and drafting Josh Smith onto Team USA
do you think Josh is encouraged to be more Kevin Love/Aldridge’s role (BIG, shoot long Js, muscle) or Andre Iguodala’s role (defense hustle run and pass to shooters)?

Yeah I thought so.

@Grandad
My bad, I edited it at 1:06 to try and make the point clearer.

The point of the 1:06 point is that pigeonholing players to 1 spot is idiotic. You have to shift around and see what works.

Now, Let’s be honest. Lebron at the PF is what Hawks fans think Josh should be.
The description fits him to a tee:
more athletic than 4s, drive past PFs, score at will, facilitate, scoring machine etc. etc.

Well Lebron is 260 lbs and an obviously better ball handler than Josh and even he settles for Js at the 4 at times.

As a 3, Josh would be posting up or on the wing and Teague would be the primary ball handler using PnRs to create semi double team situations.

And he’d be the #1 rebounder and shotblocker at his position. And if Kobe Bryant can’t guard Josh Smith how many guards can?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIepUUANijo

Run some motion and get Josh vs SGs and PGs and bomb 3s and jumpers from the double teams.

And top 4 PFs don’t get bullied out of the post by Troy Murphy.

Positions and such. (continued)

For the 416th time on this blog … exaggeration … I`m gonna repeat:
“Positions Don`t Matter” !

I`ll explain again;
the number assigned to the player is irrelevant.

The Coach [should] take the five players on the floor and:
* defensively – assign each to the best possible match-up.
* offensively – put ea player in the best *spots on the floor to be successful.
these offensive spots are fluid or constantly moving due to screening action,
cutting, slipping screens, etc, etc, etc.
Obviously, certain players are more adept inside than out;
Zaza, for exp; but, does Zaza have to stay near the basket ?
… No … Then why ?
Zaza might be outside screening,
or as a pressure release to reverse the ball.

Now Josh needs to be parked in and around the lane.
In my post above;
I made mention that if I coached LBJ,
I would play him in the post.
Same for Josh.
LBJ is a basketball player, as is Josh.
* Don`t put a # on him.
** Let him play basketball.

Does Josh need to defend the [5] ?
… No – no more so than does Al.
-Yet-
Offensively Josh [technically] should be a [5].

Al and Josh can play together with:
Korver, Morrow, or Delfino, at the [3] it does`t matter.
-OR-
Al & Josh can play together with Zaza at the [5];
it still don`t matter.

Just let `em play Ball !

One last item:
Josh needs to be the kind of defender, such as;
Iguodala and Battier, or that Artest used to be !
A player that can intimidate at positions [2], [3], or [4],
and play the point on our zone, all the while
contesting shots from “out of nowhere”
when the opportunity arises.

Josh wishes to be an all-star;
then become the Best all `round defender in the league.
*a stopper
*guard the other team`s best player
* lock down defender
*continue to rebound
**do not gamble for steals
***play position ” Team ” defense
****continue to block shots – especially in transition

He will Earn Respect !

Earlier Naj mentioned that perhaps many
had not actually seen Anthony Randolph play very much.

For those folks;

Anthony Randolph:
6-10+ which means he`s a close to 6-11 as Al is to 6-10
He has a 7-3 wingspan; a 9-1 standing reach; and is really fast.
A freakish athlete, and has a knack for scoring,
plus could develop into a rim defender and a defensive force.

His main attribute is his ballhandling.
he would be considered a point forward in many cases.
An excellent ballhandler and passer.
Also a lefty !
Now for the Bad news.

For some reason he has not put it all together.
I have not read that he`s a bad kid nor lazy.
Something just hasn`t clicked ?

He is still very, very young as he just turned 23 yrs old 7/15/12.

He is thin though getting bigger and somewhat stronger.

My analysis:
* poor background;
* first pro team Golden State under Nellie was much like
Teaguer under Wdsn. [didn`t play / they didn`t teach]
* his footwork is poor
* his shot mechanics are inconsistent
* he has not been on one team very long
nor one with a developmental program

-note-
unlimited potential … needs a teacher

Grandad,

I saw a lot of randolph when he played for the Knicks and Golden State. He is weak mentally and has a broke jumper. He can run the break and bring the ball up, decent in transition can block some shots. Problem is he has a broke jumper and is frail and has had issues with his ankles. Worst thing that happen to him was being drafted by Nellie in Golden state and him not having confidence in him.

I think when Ferry talks about short term and long term goals, his short term goal (outside of Dwight) is to play a more up-tempo style. One that is “fun to watch”. He’ll attempt to increase the average fan base by increasing the entertainment value. He will be considered extremely successful if he can get this done while maintaining cap flexibility and grabbing one of the last playoff spots in the east.

How happy should the ASG be if Ferry can increase attendance, cut salary, acquire future draft picks, and still make the playoffs (which equals playoff revenue).

Just Joe

IMO though, the up-tempo style is just short term. Once he has the right players, we’ll return to his half court, San Antonio-style. Defense, ball movement, post play, and outside shooting.
